Jonathan Brostoff is Honorary Consulting Physician and Professor of Allergy and Environmental Health at University College London Medical School. An instructional tool for those who suspects food allergies!

An invaluable reference source that gives a comprehensive discussion of the difference between true food allergies and food intolerance. You will find numerous case histories which help thoroughly explain the ill effects food can have on people. This book explores both sides of controversial issues concerning the symptoms caused by food intolerance, and with scientific data supports the idea that many diseases are related to the ill effects of food. There is an in-depth discussion of Rheumatoid Arthritis, IBS, Migraine headaches, and the use of diagnostic testing. A complete overview of "Bugs in the System" will enlighten all who suspect they suffer from an overpopulation of yeast or unsuitable bacteria in the gut. It will help you uncover food allergies and food intolerances through an explicit step by step elimination diet. The authors have dedicated a complete chapter to explain exactly how to use their three-stage approach to uncover the foods that may be making you feel ill! Stage one of the plan is one month of eating healthy by eliminating foods and drinks that have a drug-like action on the body, such as coffee, tea, cola, chocolate, cocoa, alcohol, sugar, histamine-rich foods and food additives. Stage two is an elimination diet that excludes the most common allergens and Stage three is much more restictive and is designed to help those sensitive to many foods. The authors suggest that your physician performs an examination to rule out any servious medical problems prior to trying this elimination diet. Good book!

I bought two books from Amazon: Dealing with Food Allergies by Janice Vickerstaff Joneja and this book. I found both to be very helpful. I like the case studies in this book.

I like the different stages of food elimination diets outlined in this book, but I did not agree with is most rigorous few foods elimination diet which included spinach, fish, chickpeas, pumpkin seeds, macadamia nuts, pistachio nuts, cashew nuts, brazil nuts and pine nuts. Really? Those foods can cause issues with people!!

So I think Dr. Joneja's few foods elimination diet is better in that it truly eliminates the top food allergens.

Otherwise, I found both books to be very helpful for me. (I think I'm dealing with food intolerance, not food allergies)

An extremely helpful book.

I did the Stage 3 elimination diet it suggests, and it helped me hone in on exactly what wasn't working. My skin got clearer and my digestion problems went away within a couple weeks. Amazing. Another thing that helped illuminate the situation was getting my hair tested for heavy metals. About a year ago I went to my doctor and he ran a whole bunch of blood tests because I wanted to know why I was becoming sensitive to more and more foods. Everything came back normal, which was nice... but didn't explain what was going on. My acupuncturist recommended sending a hair sample to a lab to test for heavy metals because it showed a pattern of your body's output over several months, whereas blood tests only show very recent output. My chart came back high in mercury and aluminum - some of the symptoms are rashes and sudden allergies! It can just build up in some people, and the more these toxic heavy metals accumulate, the greater the burden on the body, and the harder it is for the body to push out. Between this book and laying off the fish and limiting canned foods (plus taking supplements) - hopefully temporarily - I am a much much healthier and happier person.

About the Author
Thomas K. Nakayama is Professor and Director of the Department of Communications Studies, Northeastern University. He received his Ph.D. in communication studies from the University of Iowa. He has been a Fulbright lecturer at the Université de Mons-Hainaut in Belgium and Libra Professor at the University of Maine. He has taught at Arizona State University, California State University, San Bernardino and the University of Iowa. His interests are in critical theory, cultural studies, and rhetorical studies.

Judith N. Martin is currently Herberger Professor of Communication in the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication at Arizona State University. She received her Ph.D. in speech communication from the Pennsylvania State University. She also studied at the Université de Grenoble for a year, and was involved in study aboard administration for a number of years. She also has experience in cross cultural training and has co-authored three books with Prof. Tom Nakayama. Her current research interests focus on: the role of communication in cross cultural transitions, white identity and and communication, and pedagogical issues in teaching intercultural communication.

GOOD BOOK !!!!!

People should just give this book a five stars for three reason.
1) it is cheaper from the freaken book store
2) if they give the correct vision ( the actual book you need for the class).
3) it is readable.
I got this book for my summer communication class for intercultural communication, Sure, this book is old (duh, is for rent), there might be a little mistake highlighter makes, BUT IT IS OKAY!!!!

JULIA L. KAY is a painter, printmaker, photographer, muralist, and digital artist born and raised in New York City. She holds a BA in photography from Wesleyan University in Connecticut and did graduate work at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. Kay now lives in San Francisco, where she’s had the opportunity to complete commissions and to exhibit both locally and internationally. ABOUT Julia kay’s portrait party

Julia Kay’s Portrait Party (JKPP) is an international collaborative project in which artists all over the world make portraits of each other. After seven years of exchanging portraits, tips, and techniques with each other, we’re now sharing our art, our words and our inspiration with everyone who is interested in or would like to get started with portraiture.

JKPP began in 2010 as a way to celebrate the successful completion of my three-year project to make a self-portrait every day. During that project I experimented with multiple media and conceptions of “self-portrait.” I drew while looking in the mirror, from photographs, from memory and from imagination. I painted in my studio and drew with my finger on my iPod Touch. In all this experimentation, the thing that emerged as the most important to me was my commitment to a daily art-making practice. I had never had that in my life before, and it was terrific. After three years, I was ready to stop putting myself in every picture, but I wasn’t ready to stop drawing every day.

As a transition between staring at my own face for three years and opening up to other genres entirely, I thought it would be fun to throw a portrait party and look at some other faces. I’d first heard of portrait parties from Rama Hughes’s blog, where he described a portrait party as a get-together where artists draw each other. Originally I thought I would have a traditional live portrait party. 

Unfortunately, as the three years of my self-portraits were winding up, I found myself in the middle of a family emergency and in no position to throw a live party. I’d begun posting my work and following other artists on flickr.com so I decided to try starting a group there. I sent invites to some of the other self-portrait and figurative artists I’d been interacting with, crossed my fingers, and hoped a couple of people would post photos by the time I was ready to start, a week later.

Apparently I wasn’t the only self-portrait artist in the world hungry for another face to stare at. In that first week, before I even began drawing anyone myself, 60 artists jumped on board and drew more than 200 portraits of each other. After six weeks, we had 150 members from around the world who had posted more than 1,300 portraits of each other. By the time of this book’s publication, we had more than 1,000 members from more than 55 countries, and the group had produced more than 50,000 portraits of each other.

As the portrait count was growing, the group was also growing closer as a community. Group members were using the Flickr interface to comment extensively on each other’s work, have conversations about different art processes, tell jokes. There was an inadvertently funny moment early on, when one of the digital artists asked a watercolorist “What app did you use for that?” Usually the digital artists posted to digital groups and the watercolorists posted to watercolor groups, so they weren’t used to seeing each other’s work. But here artists in all media were mixing it up and being inspired by each other. A wide range of styles also emerged—from realistic likenesses to wild semi-abstracts that are perhaps only conceptually portraits. Of course you’ll see this range of styles and media throughout the book, but to whet your appetite, here you can see two portraits in very different styles from the same photo of Lena, Norway.

In addition to a growing body of work and a growing community, the group has had growing recognition. Many individual artists exhibit, publish and sell their JKPP portraits. We’ve been invited to participate in portrait-themed exhibits and portrait events. Several JKPP group exhibits have been held, in locations from the USA to the UK, including a month-long exhibit in San Francisco culminating in a three-day international meetup to celebrate our 5th Anniversary.

The digital revolution was instrumental in bringing the artists of JKPP together. The advent of the internet enabled us to connect visually with each other over great distances. It has allowed artists from places as disparate as the USA and Iraq, the UK and South Korea, to exchange photos of ourselves for portraiture and to share our work, our ideas, and our advice.

Another part of the digital revolution also impacted JKPP. Art made on phones and tablets, known as mobile digital art, was gaining momentum as the party was starting. I was very interested in this medium from its inception, and was involved with the online community of artists exploring it. Within a month of JKPP starting, the first Apple iPad was released and mobile digital artists were freed from the tiny screens of their phones. The artists who came together at the inception of JKPP used media ranging from painting with brushes to painting with the Brushes app. Everyone was interested in all the different processes, and many artists were influenced by each other. Traditional artists started playing with iPads, and digital artists pulled dusty watercolor sets out of their closets.

I’ve wondered if it’s revolutionary to make a portrait—thousands of portraits—without having to worry about flattering or bestowing prestige on the subject, as artists commissioned to make portraits generally have to do. At JKPP, the members offer up their photos of themselves to be used by other artists to explore their own artistic interests. Although there are guidelines for being respectful, there’s no requirement for a resemblance, or a flattering depiction.

On the other side of the equation, historically, you had to be the queen, the pope, the prime minister, or at least a sports star to have so many portraits made of you. But at JKPP, hundreds of people without exceptional fame have had the experience of not just one, two, or three portraits of themselves, but dozens, even hundreds.
In this book, you will find hundreds of portraits by and of artists from all over the world. Our portraits are in a wide range of media, including digital and traditional—and some that fall in neither category. Styles range from colorful to monochrome, realistic to abstract. Themes such as artists at work and play show that a portrait can be more than head and shoulders. The range of interpretations is illustrated with different artists’ portraits of the same subject, often from the same photo. An Inspirational Slice of Cake from the Portrait Party

I can recommend Portrait Revolution without reservation to anyone with a penchant for the visual arts in general and portraiture in particular. The book is a collection of selected pieces which were created as part of Julia Kay's Portrait Party, an online project of over 1000 artists which began in 2010 and is ongoing. It's not exactly a how-to book, but with anecdotes and reflections on the creative process from the artists themselves, it's more than just a coffee-table collection of artwork. The styles and mediums represented in these pages are incredibly diverse. One of my favorite features of the book is the showcasing of portraits done by different artists of the same subject, showing there are multiple ways to interpret the world.

Julia Kay's Portrait Party is an incredibly vibrant and warm community of artists, and this book is an deliciously inspirational slice of cake from the party. Just flipping through the pages makes me want to put pencil to paper and dip my brushes in paint.

Bravo!

Excellence has marked every stage of the Julia Kay Portrait Party experience. Why should the release of this community's first book be any exception? I knew it would be a great testament to the hard work and good will of it's creators all over the planet, but the level of care put into making this and making it right has surpassed even reasonable expectations. Another Bravo for Julia Kay and the community she has inspired and gathered together from around the world. What a privilege to have been welcomed into the group and to be a part of this project. Hats off (even Julia's crazy hats) to everyone who worked hard making this dream a reality. This book is a must for anyone wanting to learn more about the joy of portraiture. I think if there's one thing Julia imparts to us all it is the knowledge that drawing is for everyone. Pull up a chair!

This is a book show casing the work of the online group, Julia Kay's Portrait Party, where artists from all over the world draw and paint portraits of each other. Diversity sums up this book. Diversity of artist's, mediums, and techniques. You will find portraits in pencil, charcoal, oils, acrylics, watercolor, pastel, mosaic, digital, and other mediums. There is also a section by the artists on their thoughts about creating art and commentary by the author, Julia Kay. This is not a how to book. It is a book of appreciation for the many ways a face can be interpreted. Enjoy!

Wyman's obsession makes for a Rolling Stones fan's delight. While this tome has the visual treats of a coffee-table book, categorizing it as such betrays the rich text within. The Stones' bassist for nearly four decades, Wyman appears to have ruined it for all Stones biographers past, present and future. A tireless collector, he offers rare photographs and letters, press clippings, tour posters and record sleeves. And thanks to either reams of diaries or marvelous powers of recall unaffected by decades spent in a hard-partying rock band, he provides copious historical and observational data as well. Wyman, teaming up again with Havers (Bill Wyman's Blues Odyssey), gives even short-tenured band mates commensurate face time and portrays the good times, like the band's first visit to America in 1964, and the bad, such as the time Wyman went out to score heroin for a sick-and recently busted-Keith Richards in 1977. Among the memorable photographs are a fit and trim Richards in swimwear on a 1968 Australia tour and a three-shot sequence of Mick Jagger, Jerry Hall and a paparazzo, during which Jagger confronts the shutterbug and ends up on his back on the sidewalk. Wyman shows humility and humor by including his quote from '67: "It's alright leaping about the stage when you're 20, but when you get to 25 or 26 it gets a bit embarrassing." It's too bad the book stops in 1990, when Wyman, well past the age of embarrassment, stopped touring with the band.

Wyman (Stone Alone [1990]), the bass player for the Rolling Stones, is also their personal chronicler; he has kept a diary since the band's formation in 1962 and has amassed a spectacular collection of artifacts and memorabilia, which he includes here in this lush, attractive coffee-table book. Formed by Brian Jones, the Rolling Stones came out of the British skiffle and rhythm-and-blues scene. Infatuated with the blues recordings of Elmore James, Howlin' Wolf, and Muddy Waters, Jones gathered together like-minded musicians to perform in jazz clubs around London. The Rolling Stones were soon creating a sensation with their long hair (longer than the Beatles), their unkempt appearance, and the novel sounds they produced. Teaming up with Andrew Oldham, a young promoter who planted apocryphal stories in the press, the Stones became fodder for the tabloids, which fueled their bad-boy image. They released their first single in 1963 ("Come On," a cover of a Chuck Berry song), and, 40 years later, are once again touring (minus Jones, a casualty, and the retired Wyman), this time in support of 40 Licks, a greatest hits collection. It covers the drug scandals, the hysteria surrounding the Stones appearances, their provocative artistic expressions, and their myriad relationships. Wyman doesn't shy away from descriptions of some of their excesses, but he doesn't go into too much detail, either. Stones fans will love the wonderful photos, so evocative of an era. unsurpassed book of visual stones history, right from the stored boxes in bill wyman's house....not to be missed!

if you are a hard core stones fan and you don't own this book, get it- quickly!! it's a treasure chest of stones memorabilia, from the very beginning, and from various countries. need a gift for a stones fan? can't miss with this. it's a tome, a very heavy book, beautifully done. there are used copies available, i bought one, saved quite a bit. it's the best book I've seen of stones memorabilia, and, of course, you know it's all real, coming right out of boxes in bill wyman's house. this guy saved it all, good thing, too. hard to tear oneself away from looking through it. easily the most fascinating visual stones history book- with guaranteed real history. highly recommended, from a stones fan of 54 years.

I am the Stones Authority. This is a super cool book. And kind of hard to get a hold of now for a reasonable price. Some people complain about the format of the book because it is not a story book. Insert eye rolling here. Some of us actually appreciate an archivist type approach to some things since there are more than enough story books out about the Stones at this point. And Bill already gave us his story book version in "Stone Alone". But the memorabilia, the workaday notes, the photos and all make this such a fun collection to peruse at one's leisure that you should add it to your collection forthwith. Encyclopedic in its girth and volume there is no other that compares or can replace it.

If you only buy one Stones Photo History--Buy This One

Bill Wyman's book about the Rolling Stones is a superior effort. The book is similar in layout to the Beatles Anthology or the 'According to the Stones' book which followed Wyman's and was written by the remaining members of the group. Here are the reasons I believe this is the best Stones picture history on the market.

1. Wyman has attempted to be fair to all members, past and present. His treatment of Brian Jones is sympathetic without pulling punches. He acknowledges Jones as the founder and driving force behind the band, and he laments his loss.

2. Wyman has a prodigious collection of Stones ephemera, which he began saving almost from day one, so that he could show his kids that he had been in a rock and roll band for the two or three years he expected the ride to last. There are literally hundreds of color photos of Stones stuff in this book. It's like going back in time or going to the world's best Rolling Stones museum. And it is put together with love and fits Wyman's narrative perfectly. Wyman also has a lot of items dealing with other bands from the period that traveled with them, influenced them, or just existed at the same time and are of interest to the history of rock and roll.

3. The writing is superb. There is very little "I" in this book. Wyman has carefully made it a history of the band, rarely mentioning his own personal experiences except where they are historically significant. This modesty is refreshing and makes the book more credible than 'According to the Rolling Stones'.

4. The book is well-thought-out and well put together. It is a delight to read from cover to cover and will be a book you will return to and re-read to find out more about the background and historical context of the songs. It is also very reasonably priced. I got mine from Amazon used for around five dollars and it was the best five bucks I've spent in a long time on a book.

Buy it, treasure it. And thank you, Bill, for giving readers such a fun and informative look inside the life of one of the world's greatest rock and roll bands.

Not as good as I expected

Although Mr. Kluger referenced many studies, the book as a whole was more anecdotal than I expected. I was hoping for a factual study, but it was much more personal to Mr. Kluger and his family, and assorted random strangers who meant nothing to me. He seemed to use the studies that he referred to more to support his anecdotal evidence than vice versa.

Love this book!

A broad perspective on families and birth order backed up with scientific data and personal, hilarious anecdotes.
My copy is yellow-marked and underlined to the hilt and I'm only half-way through it. I'm pleased to learn many family gripes are the norm across the board and classic.
The Sibling Effect helps you comprehend your relationships with others as well as with siblings - invaluable reading.

Interesting (enough) read

Interesting book, but I found the author went into more detail about his own family life. Great if you are similar to him, but not so great if you're not. I would still recommend the book for anyone who wants to read it, but felt it could have been a bit more.

Flores Forbes, a former leader in the Black Panther Party, has been free from prison for twenty-five years. Today the recidivism rate is around 65%. Almost never mentioned in the media or scholarly attention is the plight of the 35% who don’t go back, especially black men. A few of them are hiding in Ivy League schools’ prison education programs—they don’t want to be known—but most of them are recruited by the one billion dollar industry reentry employee programs that allow the US to profit from their life and labor. Whereas, African Americans consist of only 12% of the population in the US, black males are incarcerated at much higher rates. The chances of these formerly convicted men to succeed after prison—to matriculate as leading members of society—are increasingly slim. The doors are closed to them.

Invisible Men is a book that will crack the code on the stigma of incarceration. When Flores Forbes was released from prison, he made a plan to re-invent himself but found it impossible. His involvement in a plan to kill a witness who was testifying against Huey P. Newton, the founder of the Black Panther Party, had led to his incarceration. While in prison he earned a college degree using a Pell Grant, with hope this would get him on the right track and a chance at a normal life. He was released but that’s where his story and most invisible men’s stories begin.

This book will weave Flores’ knowledge, wisdom, and experience with incarceration, sentencing reform, judicial inequity, hiding and re-entry into society, and the issue of increasing struggles and inequality for formerly incarcerated men into a collection of poignant essays, finally, giving invisible men a voice and face in society.

The truth about so called legal incarceration in the United States

With a forcefulness rarely seen in books that deal with the american prison/industrial complex and using examples from his own life experience Flores Forbes eviscerates one of our most basic (and for some cherished) assumptions: that slavery in America ended with the Civil War.

He painstakingly lays out the evidence that the practice persists today in our country masked as legal incarceration and enshrined in the exception clause of the 13th amendment..

Forbes describes how men and women (many of them convicted of minor crimes) are forced into industrial servitude, bound by chains, faced with subhuman living conditions and subjected to physical torture if they refuse to comply.

He then documents the effect that being "formerly incarcerated" has had on not just him but also on those who seek to regain full citizenship free from the stain of imprisonment.

The book implores those of us who are aware of this immoral practice to not sit idly by while it takes place but to get involved in efforts to amend the 13th amendments exception clause so that once a person has paid their debt to society a path to full restoration of their rights as citizens should await them when they are released.

I found Invisible Men :A Contemporary Slave Narrative in the era of Mass Incarceration to be one of the most compelling books 'Ive ever read and I would encourage those who recognize slavery as a crime of moral turpitude and who also care about the plight of those who are imprisoned to read it as well.

The author with honesty and clarity describes his prison experiences and the difficult and long path that he took to educate himself and integrate himself into society to become a valued employee. Along the way he learned through books and caring mentors the steep steps that former incarcerated people have to climb.

This is a very good hand book. Has a lot of very useful equations and tables. I would definatly recommend purchasing this while in engineering school or out.

Great book, I love it, seems to have most engineering concepts covered for a quick look thru on the job site. The book is actually light and very neatly laid out format with the formulae and units. Would recommend this for a student or professional!
