About the Author
John R. (Jack) Deller, Jr. is professor of electrical and computer engineering at Michigan State University where he directs the Speech Processing Laboratory. He received the 1998 IEEE Signal Processing Magazine Best Paper Award and the 1997 IEEE Signal Processing Society Meritorious Service Award for his six-year service as editor in chief of the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine. Dr. Deller is the coauthor of Digital Signal Processing and the Microcontroller (Prentice Hall, 1999) and currently serves as associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Speech and Audio Processing. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.

John H. L. Hansen is an associate professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder; he holds appointments in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences and in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Dr. Hansen serves as associate director for the Center for Spoken Language Understanding (CSLU) and director of research activities of the Robust Speech Processing Laboratory at CSLU. He has served as technical advisor to the U.S. delegate for NATO, and he is associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Speech and Audio Processing and of the IEEE Signal Processing Letters. Dr. Hansen received the 1990 National Science Foundation Research Initiation Award and has been named a Lilly Foundation Teaching Fellow for contributions to the advancement of engineering education.

John G. Proakis is a faculty member of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Northeastern University. His professional experience is in the general area of digital communications and digital signal processing. Dr. Proakis is the author of Digital Communications (McGraw-Hill, 3rd ed., 1995) and the coauthor of Introduction to Digital Signal Processing (Prentice Hall, 3rd ed., 1996); Advanced Digital Signal Processing (Macmillan, 1992); Communication Systems Engineering (Prentice Hall, 1994); Digital Signal Processing Using MATLAB (PWS, 1997); and Contemporary Communication Systems Using MATLAB (PWS, 1998). He is a Life Fellow of the IEEE.

A good reference, but too theoretical

This book is very thorough, but at times it seems like the authors go out of their way to keep their discussion on a very theoretical level.
Chapter 1: A highly theoretical review of DSP. You need good knowledge of DSP to understand it.
Chapter 2: Goes over the human speech production and recognition systems. Here you get some practical info on the spectral and time-domain properties that distinguish speech sounds.
Chapter 3: Describes a model of the speech production based on a series of pulses passed through filters that correspond to features of the human speech production system. Practical issues such as which zero and pole values work best are left as an exercise to the reader.
Chapter 4: A lot of mathematics relating long-term statistical properties to those of a short frame of speech data. Contains good info on how to find recursive formulas for statistical properties of speech frames. It is a great shame that the authors don't include examples in MATLAB or pseudo code.
Chapter 5: Linear Prediction. Discusses a mathematical algorithm for creating a prediction filter that could be used to predict the next value in a series of data. In speech processing we are interested in using the coefficients of this prediction filter to encapsulate the properties of a speech frame. Examples of 1st,, 2nd, and 3rd order filters would have gone along way to illustrate how to implement this. There are some good formulas to measure the degree of similarities between speech frames based on their LP filter coefficients.
Chapter 6: Introduces the concept of the cepstrum. Cepstral analysis allows you to de-convolve speech data to separate the excitation source from the vocal tract filter. That way you can lifter out (a play on filter out) the excitation (responsible for pitch) and focus only on the vowel sounds. As always, how to make it work is left as an exercise.
The rest of the book is about speech coding and speech recognition. My class did not cover the later chapters, so I only read the parts that applied to projects.
The book helped me understand speech processing journal articles which tend to assume a lot of background knowledge.
The theoretical background that this book provides is necessary; good engineers need to understand the underpinnings of their bag of tricks. It is painful, however, at times. To apply the information in this book, you will certainly need a good mentor and a lot of tinkering in MATLAB.

The best that one can get regarding processing of speech signals

Very thorough book about speech recognition. I should say this book is not quite for novices in this particular field. One should know at least basics of digital signal processing and for that refer to Proakis, Manolakis - Digital Signal Processing. Of course, your mileage may vary.

However, there is absence of implementation of real world situations, whether it would be in Matlab, Python etc.

The book is probably the best reference on the field. The authors take their utmost effort to explain even some of the most subtle details but in a unified theoretical fashion. Must buy for anyone interested in the Speech processing Area

As a PMHNP, this book has come in handy many times. It is a great resource for prescribed medications as well as OTC options. It has everything from the mechanism of actions, side effects, nursing tips, and charts. The spiral binding makes it easy to keep your page.

The BEST Weight Watcher Cookbook Yet!

I have quite a few Weight Watcher cookbooks, but this is my ALL-time favorite. The recipes in most of the WW cookbooks are a bit different and take some not-so normal ingredients, but this one is not like that. The ingredients in this cookbook contain typical home ingredients. The recipes are absolutely delicious and easy to prepare, using only one pan!

Of course, the points plus value is included so you don't have to figure that out for yourself.

Note: This does not include desserts, appetizers, and side dishes. This cookbook features main dishes only. However, you won't need side dishes with these dishes. Each recipes includes protein and vegetables and/or fruits. They're very filling, too.

If you are thinking of buying one WW cookbook, buy this one. #1 on my list!

LOVE THIS BOOK! ALL CAPS FOR EXCITEMENT :)!!

This book needs more reviews- it is ABSOLUTELY worth the $. The recipes are affordable and easy to make.

I have a bunch of cookbooks that I love but I think this might be my alltime favorite.

First... REAL ingredients. By that I mean you can run to your local grocery to get them. There's a few "fancy" things in here but the VAST majority of the book is "doable" for the average person living in the "average" town.

That is very attractive to me in a cookbook... with kids, a hungry husband and a hungry friend that is always here that's a big bonus!

Second... many are fairly simple and quick... another bonus.

Third... the book is HUGE. It's full of gorgeous photos and loads of tasty recipes. They have great seasonings and good serving sizes. I have a family of 4 + my friend so that's 5 I'm feeding.... Tonight I made a Gumbo out of it and we all loved it. It made the house smell wonderful while we waited for it to cook in the crockpot.

I'd give this book 20 stars if I could :).

From roasted chicken to mini cheesecake recipes, this is a terrific cookbook for those following the WW smart points plan. It's actually quite a good cookbook for anyone looking for healthier meals and recipes for yourself, your family, or a gathering of friends. The mini cheesecake recipe alone has been a huge hit with many friends in the last few months, regardless whether they are watching their diet or not! Wish this book was available in a spiral bound option, but just put a heavy pot on the book and it'll stay on the page you need just fine.

Very detailed book on reflexology. I am using ift as a refresher course to see if I have forgotten anything in the last 35 years of practicing reflexology. Everything anyone would need to practice reflexology. I got started with reflexology about 35 years ago when the only information I could find on it was a small book that was more of a pamplet than a full size book, and there was no internet. Yes I'm that old, I still remember having only 3 channels on the little black and white TV, that's when rocks and dirt were just forming.

Excellent book

Shortly after purchasing this book I awoke with a headache one morning so I decided to linger in bed for a little bit and read my new book Complete reflexology for life. After the first few pages I decided to surf through to see if I could find some technique to employ to cure my headache. I briefly read up on it and put the technique into action. After 2 attempts my headache disappeared. I was amazed. This is an excellent book. It is easy to understand and well illustrated.

This book is funny.

This book is funny, especially if you like British humor.

This book has been read and reviewed by so many people that I don’t feel the need to expound on my single profound philosophical opinion about it, as have many others. I like the way the parts of the story that should be taking place in the US still feel very British and I like how the Americans in England come off a bit simple. If you can’t appreciate a bit of national satire, then why bother reading a humorous book.

This book is pretty much one big collection of satires poking fun at: religion, Christianity specifically, occultism, politics, war, child rearing practices and more. Again, for those who don’t have a good sense of humor, this book will either offend or fly over their head.

I will say that the ending came together rather anticlimactic, considering all that happened to get there. Overall, though, it was an enjoyable ride. This book is listed as fantasy in most places and humor in others. I’d call this Paranormal Humor or Religious Satire but let’s be honest, most people wouldn’t pick up the latter because they’d never get passed the first word.

Recommended to adult readers who have a good sense of humor.

The end of the world was never funnier

This is one of the funniest books I have ever read. This has been one of the few books that I have enjoyed enough to buy for someone else as a gift. The story is a bit sacrilegious, so I wouldn't recommend it to a crazy religious relative, but for anyone who has an interest in the occult, but maybe not a serious investment in it.

This book is the story of the apocalypse. A demon, named Crowley (an ex-angel who didn't so much "fall" as saunter vaguely downwards), who actually really loves being on earth, is contacted to play his part in the birth of the Antichrist and to make sure he finds his appropriate home with a diplomat. (Think of the Omen). Unfortunately, Crowley really loves there being an earth and humans to "tempt" and living his (eternal) life. After accidentally misplacing the Antichrist, Crowley and his angel friend, Aziraphale (who owns a bookstore and equally loves living on earth) are on a mission to find him.

This book has an amazing cast of characters, including Adam (the Antichrist), his friends (a collective known as "Them") and his Hellhound (named Dog). The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are joined by the slightly lesser known "Four Bikers of the Apocalypse." There are Witchfinders and a prophetess.

Also, it's Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.

I read this book before I ever watched Supernatural, but I think any fan of Supernatural would enjoy this book. I like the blurred lines between Angel and Demon, and how Crowley and Aziraphale have such an amazing friendship, despite being on opposite sides of the Divine Plan. I like how they're on a Race Against The Clock, considering that the Rapture will be happening Next Sunday.

One last note... In the Forward, Gaiman and Pratchett write that Good Omens is the most repaired book in the world. When I went on vacation to New York City one summer, we had a mix-up with our rooms. I put our train tickets to get back from NYC in my copy of this book and put it in a cabinet. However, when we got back from sight-seeing, we had to move rooms and I forgot that I left this book in a cabinet. Low and behold, they gave our room to someone else who insisted that they didn't have my book (and our tickets) in there, and the book wasn't returned to the lost and found. We had to spend $100 to replace our tickets, but to this day, I still wonder who ended up with my copy of this book.

A new Favorite !

Why did it take me so long to buy and read this book? I asked myself that every couple of pages or so. I have been a long term fan of Terry Pratchett and while I haven't read much of Neil Gaiman, I loved what I have read. I have no idea why I didn't read this until now but if you are like me, you haven't read this, go get this book!

Pratchett's humor shines in this book, and Gaiman's gift of fantasy storytelling all creates a book that is exciting, riveting and slyly hilarious. The classic good vs evil is told in a fresh and funny way. If you are familiar with the Discworld books by Pratchett, you know that the absurd becomes the ordinary, and that is throughout the book.

Although the theme is serious, the end of the world, an angel and a demon, who while on opposite sides, suddenly find themselves in the middle of things. Things go wrong from the very beginning, when a simple baby swap goes wrong and the comedy of errors, including a hell hound delivery gone wrong in the most hilarious (and cute) way, begins. The book is a fast read, never boring and it will leave you wanting more.

Quick and easy to use

It gets thicker every time I purchase a new edition. But it's still the best IMO for quick DDI reference. I love how the info are organized. Very quick and dirty reference with ample literature to back up their recommendations. There are other DDI texts out there and I've tried them. But Tatro's version is by far the best I've used and own. Highly recommended!

I would recommend if in school to ask professor if their alright ...

Very well written book. The one thing I regret was buying the hardcover vs the paperback people in my class bought the paperback and the only issue or difference we found between the two was that the pages were 7 pages different. So if hardcover had something on page 30 it was on 37 I'm the paperback. I would recommend if in school to ask professor if their alright with you buying the paper back. It will save you a bit of money.

Grammatical Errors Galore

It surprises me that a marketing collegiate text book has so many grammatical errors. Especially when the introduction claims that "every page has been poured over to provide the most up to date research and business articles for educational purposes." Walmart is spelled Wahnart, etc. Through the whole book. While the book is clearly organized, sometimes the grammatical mistakes deter from the flow of reading, making the study process aggravating at times. And while this is a marketing book for a marketing course, it seems more like an excuse to market TO YOU.

Well written Marking book which includes many useful real world examples

This is the latest edition of the Principles of Marketing textbook and is used for an introductory undergraduate or graduate course. It's clearly written and includes lots of fresh, up-to-date, illustrative real-world examples to prove their theories and statements. Each chapter is filled with key terms used in the real world and the definitions can be found in the margins. The terms are also explained by the author's words as well as live examples. The end-of-chapter questions and case studies are also a very good reference and provide a way to test yourself on the content shared within the chapters. Also included in the chapters are many helpful charts, tables, and photos.

During my course I found this to be a very helpful book and believe that the content that is covered will help me while I continue to chase my professional goals and dreams.

In October and November 2000 the central Chinese coastal city of Hangzhou sponsored an international fair. Named the West Lake Millennial Exposition for the city's most famous tourist attraction, it was designed to showcase the new China in its international contexts. In the midst of China's emergence as a growing world power, the exposition and its environs pointed to China's profusion of political and economic identities at the opening of the twenty-first century. Though there were several sites in the city where exposition events were held, the center of the fair was a new spectacularly modern stadium whose design reminded the onlooker of two enormous bridgeheads—and almost symbolically of the passage to a new China. The stadium complex included a hotel and huge glistening shopping emporiums. Yet little more than a decade ago the stadium site was rice paddies—so rapid has been the city's modernization. For all the glitz of the stadium, streets within a block were lined with the hovels of workers. The shopping emporiums stocked the latest in brand names from the West—clothing, cosmetics, and all manner of consumer products, while the overwhelming aroma emanating from the woks of street peddlers, like that of a century ago, was the pungent smell of chou doufu or stinky tofu. Though China persists in calling itself Communist, all the money for the exposition came not from the government or party but from private sources. The exposition trumpeted the international context of China's growing modernity (no fewer than thirty-one Italian furniture makers were on hand, for example), yet at two archives I was denied access to materials because I was a waiguoren (foreigner). China is moving into the modern world with such speed that it is understandable that there are inevitable time warps. But such anomalies point to the transcendent questions of what China is and where China is going. These questions are crucial to us because in the twenty-first century China is a significant player in world affairs; of we hope to deal intelligently with China and its people, we must understand their past and present.

It is a truism (though one frequently forgotten in the presentist American culture) that one cannot understand the present and its identities without understanding the past. Many Chinese today are acutely aware of their past—as individuals, as country, and as culture. Even popular culture in the last years of the twentieth century celebrated the link between past and present. The hugely popular "Heirs of the Dragon" by rock star Hou Dejian pointed to the power of the dragon, the symbol of traditional Chinese civilization, over today's Chinese:

Under the claws of this mighty dragon I grew up
And its heir I have become.
Like it or not—
Once and forever, an heir of the dragon.

But what has it meant and what does it mean for the Chinese to be "heirs of the dragon"? What does it signify for the world entering the new century? This book, which is comprehensive in scope, explores these questions and examines the fundamental aspects and developments of the Chinese past. I have used the broad and important theme of "identities" to help shape much of the presentation—analyzing traditional identities under the "dragon" and various modern identities that its heirs have tried to shape or have experimented with. It is a natural theme given the fact that the discourses of history and identity both attempt to delineate a meaningful past for a particular present. Further, in the making of history, individual and state actions depended in large part on how individual and state perceived their identities and how they were perceived by others with whom they had to interact.

This study begins in the last two decades of the reign of one of China's greatest emperors, the Qianlong emperor (1736-1795). While early textbooks of "modern" China often treated the salvoes of the Opium War (1839-1842) as the beginning of the "modern" period, recent work has shown that important changes foreshadowing developments in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries were underway in the late eighteenth century. Thus a date (though somewhat arbitrary) around 1780 seems to make historical sense. Starting then, when Chinese wealth and power were perhaps at their imperial peak, also provides us with a baseline of sorts to provide important context for understanding China's rapid decline in the nineteenth and part of the twentieth century. In that period of decline and throughout its twentieth century revolution, one of the most important problems facing individual Chinese and China as a nation was choosing appropriate political, social, cultural, and economic identities as contexts and situations changed.

Above all, this is a story of men and women whose choices shaped modern Chinese history in the often-startling directions it seemed to lurch. It is a dramatic story filled with some triumph but more often than not tragedy. It is a tale frequently bloody and violent, alternately soaring with hope and plunging into bleak despair. It compels our interests both as a history of an ancient civilization developing into a modern nation-state and as an account of how the heirs of the dragon have struggled and are continuing to work to find their identity in the modern world.
