Skygods: The Fall of Pan Am, by Robert Gandt

In Skygods, Robert Gandt, a Pan Am pilot for twenty-six years, gives the first inside account of Pan Am's unprecedented demise. To tell the complete story, Gandt interviewed hundreds of former Pan Am airmen and executives. Gandt reveals what really happened in the cockpits, where Pan Am's captains, dressed in Navy-style uniforms, once ruled their ships like petty tyrants. Though Pan Am captains were considered the best and the brightest in the industry, Skygods tells disturbing stories of captains who let stewardesses land their planes, who flew at the wrong altitude and in the wrong direction, and who tragically disappeared along with their planes into the night. Gandt takes readers behind the scenes at Pan Am's executive offices in the landmark Pan Am building - a massive edifice to the founder's personal vision. He shows how a series of impulsive and short-sighted CEOs succeeded in destroying one of America's greatest companies. Pan Am employees were rocked by the company's decision to purchase a domestic carrier - at an eventual cost of nearly a billion dollars. Strapped with debt and flying half-empty planes to places like Monrovia, Rabat, and Lagos, Pan Am then stunned its employees by selling its profitable Pacific routes. The airline that could bend the wills of American presidents was reduced to relying on the Shah of Iran for the financial salvation it would never receive. Ultimately, it was a senseless terrorist act over Scotland that shattered Pan Am forever - and ended an era in American travel. In 1966, Pan Am had reached the zenith of its wealth and influence. Under aviation pioneer Juan Trippe, the airline had risen from the muddy back-waters of Latin America to a place of preeminence in world commerce. Told from points of view of airmen and executives, Skygods gives the inside story on the demise of the world's most experienced airlines.

From Publishers Weekly
Pan Am and its founder Juan Trippe were major players in the creation of the commercial airline industry. Pan Am, founded in 1927, was the first airline to fly across the Pacific, across the Atlantic and around the world. It was also the first U.S. airline to fly jets. Pan Am's early success in aviation allowed the company to expand into other areas such as ownership of the Intercontinental Hotel chain and the Pan Am Building in New York City. In the mid-1970s, however, Pan Am began to lose money and Trippe's successors were unable to turn the airline around. The company's last years were punctuated by attempts to find a buyer as well as the piecemeal divestiture of the company. Gandt peppers his recounting of the decline of Pan Am with anecdotes from former employees, mainly pilots. And while this is an involving account, Gandt, an aviation freelance journalist, does not provide much analysis of the root causes of Pan Am's failure, attributing its demise in 1991 to bad management and bad luck. At the end of this tale readers will likely ask themselves-as apparently did most Pan Am employees-why did Pan Am die?

From Library Journal
Aviation journalist and pilot Gandt interweaves the complex and interesting story of Pan Am's rise under founder and visionary Juan Trippe with American business and politics. Trippe molded Pan Am from the glory days of flying boats and the opening of Pacific routes to new piston-driven airliners and the transition to jets. In 1965 Pan Am was the world's preeminent airline, boasting 40,000 employees, 143 airliners, and over $1 billion in revenues; it was also the torchbearer for new aircraft designs. How Trippe achieved this and influenced Presidents Kennedy and Johnson reveal the workings of American business and politics. In 1968 foreign carriers increased, revenues declined, and Trippe resigned. In the Seventies a series of catastrophic accidents, increasing competition, rising fuel costs, and a strike started the downward spiral exacerbated by the 1988 Lockerbie tragedy and Chapter 11 proceedings. A fascinating commentary on aviation and American business; for public libraries.

From Booklist
The history of pioneering Pan American World Airways has already been well chronicled in more than a half dozen books, but Gandt--himself a pilot--tells Pan Am's story from the point of view of those who proudly worked for it. He focuses on the airline's heady glory days of the 1960s, when it showily began accepting reservations for the first commercial flight to the moon, and then he tracks its slow but steady descent and ultimate crack-up when it was forced to call it quits at the end of 1991. Gandt documents the toll taken by the company's participation in airlifting troops to Vietnam, a bitter strike in 1985, deregulation, and the Lockerbie terrorist bombing tragedy; and he vividly describes the subsequent effects on both the company and the men and women--in particular the pilots ("skygods")--who worked for it. My father was a Pan Am mechanic
By Stacy V
The story of Pan Am's downfall is tragic. My father was so proud to have worked there as a mechanic for 31 years. But as a kid, I remember how scared he was for more than a decade that he could lose his job. Then one day he did. I will never forget coming home from school as he sat on the couch staring blankly out the living room window. All he said was "It's finally over." By that time I was a freshman in college. He made me promise to finish my degree. He didn't have one and he said, "they can take away your job, but they will never take away that piece of paper that says you accomplished something. A college degree means you have options." He died 5 months later at the age of 53. I remember him saying how an announcement was made telling them to leave that last day. "Pan Am is bankrupt and out of business. You have 15 minutes to leave the building." There were armed security guards pad locking all the doors behind them. This book not only details the tragedy, but makes me understand my father more. It had to have been hell to have pride in a place you worked for 31 years only to have it end in the most undignified manner ever. Pan Am stole from their employees. What happened to all those employees was criminal.

If you like Pan Am history, you've got to read this.
By Amazon Customer
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's not the glossy glamour recounting recipe that many others have followed, but rather the view from a 60's pilot as he signed on and hoped to make some rank with Pan Am. I found it very candid in the recounting of operations and showed that the airline was a collection of humans, all of whom have the potential to run amok at times. This is a great book that I've already loaned out for the enjoyment of others.

Pan Am's fall from Mt. Olympus
By milwaukeeobserver
For many years, I have been collecting books of airline histories. More than several are about Pan Am, once commonly referred to as America's Chosen Instrument because of its reach and influence around the world. While not strictly a history of the airline from gestation to expiration, Skygods: The Fall of Pan Am by Robert Gandt is nevertheless the best of the bunch in focusing on and explaining the slow and tortuous disappearance of this once proud and ubiquitous US-based global carrier.

Of course, what goes down must also go up, especially in aviation. And Gandt also gives readers enough information about the airline's rise to appreciate its historical significance in the development of commercial aviation. By book's end, readers should feel as if they know Pan Am intimately - from the legendary founder, Juan Trippe; to Pan Am's near demise before it ever took off; to its pioneering of transoceanic travel via the flying boat; to its part in the development of revolutionary aircraft like the 707 and the 747 and the engines that powered them.

The heart of the book - Pan Am's downfall - is told from the perspective of its Skygods and goddesses, the pilots who made the airline their lives. Like any success or failure, ego plays a big part. It was no different with Pan Am.

Trippe manipulated and bullied people, including politicians across the globe, to make the carrier what it was, but it was hubris that brought it down, starting with his purchase of so many 747s that couldn't be filled. And after Trippe reluctantly relinquished control of Pan Am, a revolving door of CEOs was set in motion. Unfortunately, most of them had little business (or experience) running an airline, including William T. Seawell whose purchase of National Airlines (better known as "Seawell's Folly") only furthered Pan Am's descent.

Then there was the government's and unions' considerable culpability in bringing down the airline. The government because of politics, its tortoise-like operation, and disregard for business; unions because of their quest for power and turf rather than concern for workers.

While terrorism played a part in Pan Am's demise, it certainly can't be considered a primary cause. Nevertheless, the chapter on the 1988 Lockerbie disaster, "A Village in Scotland", is perhaps the most riveting and poignant in the book. The murder of 270 people - 259 passengers and crew and 11 people on the ground - by Libyan terrorists, in the words of one pilot, "was the day the heart of Pan American died." Gandt's description of the emotional and physical impact is overwhelming.

Skygods is a fascinating, spellbinding read that is well researched and written.

Succinct overview of the climate science controversies
By M. Passey
I highly recommend this book. I’m not sure why another reviewer described the writing as awful. The book is well done. It is comprised of multiple short, concise, clearly written chapters covering all the facets of climate change science in just the right amount of depth. The accompanying graphics are excellent--- better in color on my Kindle Fire versus my black and white. I didn’t notice any distracting ebook issues at all. It is a science book, as advertised, which is what I was looking for.

In my view, the discovery of empirical methods has been the key driver of modern human material prosperity. That’s kind of a truism, but it is intriguing to observe how even very smart people can sometimes lose the focus on basic principles of valid statistical inference. A strength of this book is the focus on those very basic principles as applied to climate science.

The scientific proposition driving climate change alarmism is that we can predict the future---that climate is predictable to a level of accuracy and precision on the relevant timeframe such that public policy can reasonably be based on those predictions.

In light of current understanding of complex non-linear systems one may reasonably ask: What is the prior probability that human-made computer algorithms starting around the end of the 20th century will accurately predict global temperature 20, 50 or 100 years into the future? It’s an extraordinary claim. It’s a hypothesis requiring robust empirical validation by out of sample prospective data. Stated more technically: the prospective data must reject the null hypothesis that climate is unpredictable. In any other discipline that last sentence would be uncontroversial. But somehow, along the way, in climate science the null hypothesis has now shifted to imminent dangerous anthropogenic global warming. It’s as if the burden of proof is now on those that doubt predictions of climate catastrophe.

As very well reviewed in this book, the climate models used for the IPCC consensus reports are predicting substantially more warming than is actually occurring. There is a systematic error in the climate models. To my view, this is the nut of the problem with climate alarmism, casting real doubt on the myriad predictions of all sorts of severe climate related problems. But now that the null hypothesis has somehow shifted to dangerous global warming there is no failure of the models that can ever disprove the null hypothesis. All of the multiple retrospective explanations for failure of the models are presented as refinements of our understanding of global warming instead of post hoc reasoning. It is argued that the models are good enough. We can’t wait 50 years for them to be validated. Because global warming. Objecting to the lack of empirical validation of predictions of catastrophe now becomes anti-science and immoral.

1.3 billion people live without access to electricity, mostly living in Sub-Saharan Africa and developing Asia. The attempts to block the construction of coal-fired power plants in Africa and India because of predictions of dangerous global warming decrease the chance that young people in these regions will have access to electricity in their lifetimes. Poverty kills people. Lack of access to affordable electricity shortens lifespans. The WHO estimates that 3.2m million deaths per year are caused by indoor biomass burning. This is real harm to real people in the here and now.

Humans have a strong proclivity to predict the future, especially apocalypse. It’s been a feature of humankind since the beginning. Environmentalists don’t have any better track record than others in making accurate predictions, although they may be the champs on the apocalypse scale. We need to be very sure that climate alarmism in not just another chapter in the story of human evolutionary psychology, with the digital computer as the latest Oracle of Delphi.

The other driver of modern human material prosperity is exploitation of energy concentrated in fossil fuels. Decision makers in the rich nations owe it to people living without energy security to be scrupulously scientific when examining predictions of climate catastrophe caused by burning fossil fuels. This book presents a thorough discussion of the quality of the science from an appropriately skeptical stance.

How big is man's contribution to warming? How big is natures?
By J. A May
Told in very short essays, this book is tremendous. He gets quickly to the heart of each issue and explains it well. Using his definition I am a "lukewarmer" but I don't like the term much. I'm a scientist by trade and prefer the term skeptic. I still think skeptic is the accurate term for someone who questions the "settled" in "settled" science. But, the world is warming and man probably plays some unknown role in the warming. So, some like to say lukewarmer so they don't get confused with those that dogmatically deny the world is warming or that man has any role, no matter how small, in the warming. A lukewarmer would say that we don't know the causes of warming, we can't measure accurately the natural forces affecting warming, so we can't say how big man's contribution is. Which is also what a proper skeptic would say. In any case I found the book to be an enjoyable read and quite accurate. The nice thing about the book is it is written in short and easy to digest chapters. I disagree with the other reviewer who said the writing is poor. I thought the writing was quite good.

Uncovering Bias in Climate Science
By Canman
As the head of the Center for the Study of Science at the CATO Institute, Patrick Michaels not only uncovers a lot of bias in climate science, but also in science itself. He argues that a lot of it is due to government funding. While I wouldn't argue against cutting all or even most funding, Michaels has clearly shown how it creates bias and this is something that needs to be recognized.

In a spectrum ranging from alarmists, through lukwarmers to outright skeptics, many people familiar with Michaels would probably consider him a skeptic and be surprised at his self description as a lukewarmer. I would argue that a large portion of skeptics are actually lukewarmers who have been mislabeled by alarmists who have attempted to polarize everyone into "us" vs "the deniers".

He goes over a lot of topics such as fat sensitivity tails, model projections and endangered polar bears and shows how they have been exaggerated. He writes fairly well and is also an entertaining speaker. There are a lot of good YouTube videos of him and I'll put a link to one in the first comment.

MISLEADING DESCRIPTION!! ONLY RECEIVED ONE OF 2 VOLUME.
By Sammi nguyen
WHERE IS MY VOLUME 2?!?! I recently opened up the package now that I'm in med-surg.. And realized I only have 1 of 2 volume! This is ludacris! Misleading product description! I need the second volume (which is continuous of volume 1) and don't have it! Very, very upset. It would be helpful to let customers know that they WILL HAVE TO BUY EACH VOLUME SEPARATELY INSTEAD OF SAYING IT'S A 2 VOLUME SET IF THAT'S THE CASE!

WARNING - KINDLE EDITION DOES NOT COME WITH ACCESS CODE
By Amazon Customer
I found out slightly too late that the kindle edition does not have the access code for the online resources for practice questions. Also I agree completely with the previous review that the lack of page numbers makes it impossible to follow assigned reading and references. Please be aware the kindle edition will not work well for most nursing students, if not all. Amazon was gangster about the problem though - they refunded me and sent out the hard copy with free next day shipping. As long as it gets here tomorrow I will have time to study for my exam.

By TinkyTanza
Oh Big Bertha, how I loathed you in Med Surg. This is actually a really good textbook it's just absolutely massive and weighs about a two ton truck. Do yourself a favor and buy a book bag with wheels rather than carry this beast around. It lays out information quite well and goes pretty in depth into various subjects, which is both good and bad. Good, because you will need it in nursing school. Bad, because the reading is rather dry. If you are like me and reading textbooks is challenging to learn from then I suggest you get the code that goes along with this book and use Prep U to study. That actually helped me more than reading the book. I don't want to make anyone misunderstand, this book is good I just have a different way of studying is all. The reason for the four stars is because I don't know one nursing student in my class that has their book intact. The book is so huge and heavy that the binding just peels off after a while. They really needed to break this up into two separate books to make this easier to use and carry.

Packed With All Kinds of Useful Information for Surviving after your PhD
By Daniel
I bought this book as an undergrad thinking about grad school. I wanted to learn more about what career opportunities would come from a PhD in sciences and I wanted to know what I would be getting myself into if I chose that path. This book is packed with great advice for what happens after you're finished with the highest form of formal education there is. Feibelman explains from his own experience (as a physicist), and others' experiences, routes in academia, gov, and industry. He also explains skills that formal education wouldn't necessarily teach you: getting funded, interviews, giving talks, etc.
This book showed me a side of academics and the scientific community I hadn't known. And let's just say I didn't know what a postdoc was before I read this. I think the information in this book is invaluable to anyone who has, plans to, or is even considering pursuing a PhD in a science.

Getting a PhD in science/engineering? READ THIS BOOK.
By Nathan I.
I would recommend this book for any PhD student in the hard sciences: Physics, Engineering, Math, Chemistry, etc. It gave me some real insight into what the world of research (industrial or academic) will be like when I graduate with my PhD. If you're just beginning a PhD program, or are considering Masters vs. PhD, this should be must-read material. I'm surprised my universities have not offered a class that covers this type of material, it would be much more useful than the mandatory ethics classes they force you to take.

This book seems written for people who have already finished their PhD or are about to graduate very soon. I wish it had more about getting THROUGH the PhD in the first place, but that's too much to ask. This book focuses more on what to expect AFTER your PhD program, although some of the advice on picking an advisor, mentor, and research topic are applicable to anybody. So is the chapter on writing and presentations.

You'll get advice from a mentor, just go talk to them.
By Nadia H
Unfortunately, a PhD is not enough... but neither is this book. The advice granted by the book is not anything I haven't heard before. The only neat thing about this book is that it complies a lot of advice into a handy book. Either way though, the book keeps telling you to go find a mentor, who will most likely give you similar advice. I would say it is very suitable for people considering a PhD, but once one is en route to a PhD, the book is repetitive.

Review

'A wonderfully edited collection that deepens our understanding of why human rights should be deeply inscribed in our moral and political imagination.' - Richard A. Falk, Albert G. Milbank Professor of International Law and Practice, Emeritus, Princeton University; Visiting Professor, Global Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara, USA

'In tracing the complex intellectual history of human rights, Micheline Ishay’s insightful and provocative selection of texts illuminates many of today’s most fundamental rights debates. Are human rights Western impositions or universal values? Does globalization advance or undermine them? Do they originate in or constrain religion? Are they the product of socialism or among its victims? Did the anti-colonial movement respond to repression or simply shift its source? None of these questions admits simple answers, but no one should address them without considering the deep and varied perspectives provided in Ishay’s new Human Rights Reader.' - Kenneth Roth, Executive Director, Human Rights Watch

'Micheline Ishay's excellent collection provides all the material that anyone needs to participate in the critical debates about human rights. Differing views of cultural diversity, economic justice, national self-determination, and humanitarian intervention are fairly and intelligently represented.' - Michael Walzer, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, NJ

'Following her masterly History of Human Rights: From Ancient Times to the Era of Globalization, Micheline Ishay now presents us with an extraordinarily rich, original, and illuminating compilation of sources on the history and philosophy of human rights. Insightful introductions to each part provide the appropriate historical context. A ‘must’ for courses on human rights.' - David Kretzmer, Professor of International Law, Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Transitional Justice Institute, University of Ulster, UK

'The Human Rights Reader is a necessary companion to any human rights course that seeks to identify the historical and theoretical roots of the modern human rights struggle. It is a crucial contribution that lends support to the universalist claim that the struggle for human rights is not time/space specific, but rather one that, like human existance, transcends time and space and is part of a larger movement to protect and ensure the emancipation of all. For a student or instructor interested in widening the scope of the human rights debate, outside the pages of mainstream international relations journals, this anthology provides the wherewithal to do so.' - reviewed in Human Rights & Human Welfare: An International Review of Books and Other Publications.

From the Publisher
The Second Edition of The Human Rights Reader presents a dramatically revised organization and updated selections, including pieces on globalization and the war on terrorism. Each part of the Reader corresponds to five historical phases in the history of human rights and explores for each the arguments, debates, and issues of inclusiveness central to those eras. The volume remains the most comprehensive and up-to-date collection of essays, speeches, and documents from historical and contemporary sources, all of which are now placed in context with Micheline Ishay's substantial introduction to the reader as a whole and valuable introductions to each part and chapter.

Much better than I ever expected!
By Amazon Customer
I purchased this book for a class I am taking. I was very surprised and happy with the contents. It offers a reasonably balanced perspective (besides the slight Marxist leaning) and I have enjoyed reading it. The book compares early philosophy and religious teaching, as well as Eastern thought in a very unique way. Not exactly pleasure reading, but if you pair it with an excellent professor you have a very fine education.

Way Down: Playing Bass with Elvis, Dylan, The Doors and More - The Autobiography of Jerry Scheff, by Jerry Scheff

(Book). In this candid and perceptive memoir of his 45-year career, bassist Jerry Scheff takes us onto Elvis's private jet, on tour with Bob Dylan, and into the studio with The Doors. A stalwart presence behind some of the greatest names of popular music, Scheff has also played with Roy Orbison, Elvis Costello, the Association, Neil Diamond, Johnny Mathis, the Everly Brothers, John Denver, and Nancy Sinatra, to name just a few. Eschewing hype, Scheff provides a behind-the-scenes perspective, from having worked sleeves rolled up, side by side, with the great artists in their factories. The book opens with the TCB band's learning of the King's death while en route to a tour date, a pivotal moment for him, the rest of the band, and the world at large. He then proceeds on a nonlinear journey that mirrors the process of true life-reflection, from his roots in San Francisco to his touring all over the world. This is a tale of a man who has truly grown a career from a genuine love of music and of his instrument, proving how following that gift can bring a person to places beyond his wildest dreams. It is an exciting inside view of the evolution and craft and work of making rock and roll a must-have for true music craftsmen and music junkies in general.

Delightful book that I would recommend to anyone interested in how to survive life as a musician
By Piers Beagley
Jerry Scheff has a very endearing and warm style of writing. Reading his biography is like listening to a favourite Uncle telling you his old stories. Some you will have heard of, but now they are more fleshed out and even more interesting. Especially when we know the key players all too well! One oddity about the book is how he jumps around with the chronology at times but while this could be annoying, most times it is understandable.
The book is 235 pages – full marks for a good index – of which Scheff’s stories with Elvis take up 68 pages of the book.

Jerry’s tale of his early years and first becoming inspired as a bass-player, even though not being involved with Elvis, is a sheer delight. There are some revealing stories of 50s’ racism in the black jazz music scene and some interesting revelations on how the jazz, R & B and soul musicians often intersected in their session and stage work.
The story of his first true gig as a white, skinny, 14 year-old in a duck-tail hairdo trying to impress a seriously cool black jazz band – paying until his fingers bled – is a fabulous tale. As well as being just one insight on how hard it is to become a successful musician.

A load of producers and musicians have passed through Jerry’s life and it is amazing the amount of links there are in bands and recordings one has heard of over the years.

Jerry started playing with up-coming stars like Billy Preston (The Beatles etc) as far back as 1965 before recording with the likes of Sammy Davis Jr and Neil Diamond.
There is also the strange oddity of Red West calling him up to play on Elvis’ ‘Easy Come, Easy Go’ session. Red West asked "Are you Jerry Scheff the trumpet player?", to which Jerry of course agreed - although he had never played trumpet before in his life!
(You will have to get the book to read his wonderful stories about starting out as a Tuba Player!)

In his tales of Elvis and touring with the TCB Band, Jerry imparts some real warmth and joy of what it was like to be so close to all these wonderful musicians we feel we know so well.
The book starts with the fateful day of August 16th 1977 but it is a real pleasure of the book that Scheff tells of you the shocking news in such an open, honest and warm manner. He welcomes you to the TCB family in such a special way - even on the day when they heard the devastating news.
In the book Jerry Scheff reveals what it was like to spend time with all of Elvis’ musicians but also has some particularly wonderful tales about Glen D Hardin and Ronnie Tutt both of whom he was very close to.
Who knew that Scheff and his family, as well as Glen D Hardin, opted to move into quiet Las Vegas apartments in preference to the noise and craziness of living in the Hilton hotel for free? His pet parrot Otis also features in some wonderful tales!
There are stories of JD Sumner and The Stamps in Elvis’ cool "super-fly" suits, humourous on-stage pranks, getting involved with the Mafia, the troubles with Colonel Parker, getting close to young "Groupies" and all the other trials of being on-tour.

One feels that there is a real truth to his biography and while Jerry doesn’t bad-mouth anybody nor does he evade the topic of pretty heavy-duty drug taking that was all part of the 70s and 80’s culture.
In fact he tells a marvellous tale of a joke played on him at the Jungle Room sessions..
Another exciting section is on what it was like to be there playing for Elvis on Opening Night July 31, 1969….
Jerry Scheff’s stories about Elvis take up around a third of the book but don’t let that put you off as the rest is filled with marvellous tales of all sort of musicians, such as working with Roy Orbison, Elvis Costello, John Denver (some great stories there) and The Doors.

There is also a lovely chapter about touring with Bob Dylan and his Rolling Thunder Review. As with any auto-biography there is a few chapters dedicated to the early years his family and family life. I had no idea Jerry would opt out for a while for basic ‘island living’ fishing for crabs and oysters. His tales of living with Otis the parrot are particularly funny.
At the end of the book there's a very telling story of why Jerry quit the 'Elvis In Concert' tour. And it all comes down to wanting to play real music!
In the middle of the book are 16 pages of black & white photos of Jerry playing with various bands which helps put the stories into visual context. Fans will however have seen most of the photos of Jerry playing with Elvis. There is an unfortunate mistake where a two–page spread of Elvis performing in Madison Square Garden is labelled as being from the Aloha special! I also wish they had used a better looking photo of Elvis on the front cover.
Overall Verdict: This is a delightful book that I would recommend to anyone interested in what it is like to survive a successful career as a working musician. There are plenty of great insights along the way and Jerry Scheff’s writing style is very easy to read. Of course most people will buy the book only for the stories of Elvis but there is much more here to enjoy. With plenty of laughs and lovely insights along the way, you learn a lot not only about Elvis and the TCB Band but also about other well-known musicians.

Not a book on Elvis, but an unbelievable Musician!
By rick marino
Everybody that hears a CD of Elvis's live performances say; Who is that Bass Player? Jerry Scheff, one of The Best in the Business! This book tells of his career, playing with some of the most influential entertainers in the music business. A must for music enthusiast! Way Down! Playing Bass... is well written and has some cool photo's. This guy was as most bass players are, is one cool cat. His account of the day he found out Elvis had died is worth purchasing the book alone, not to mention all the other stuff. I was delightfully surprised how much i enjoyed reading this Book! Thanks for taking the time to write if Jerry....

Introducing Slavoj Zizek: A Graphic Guide, by Christopher Kul-Want

Dubbed "The Elvis of Philosophy," Slavoj Zizeck is both a serious revolutionary and an absurdist prankster, published in academic journals and Abercrombie & Fitch catalogs. Besides his work on popular culture, Zizek is concerned with politics and ideology. Introducing Slavoj Zizek reveals a provocateur whose work on Lacanian psychoanalysis collides with Marxist philosophy—creating the world's hippest philosopher.

Christopher Kul-Want is course director of the MA in Fine Art at Byam Shaw School of Art, London.

As Described, But Come On!...
By The Masked Reviewer
Pros:
Good overview and key concerns and ideas. Zizek's foreground-espoused atheism, at least according to this introduction's implications, is circumstantial happenstance that neatly conforms to his Communist idealism and his postmodern liberational politics...because he "authentically desires it to", possibly because he identifies politically with the "transgressions" of the "pervert" that lives on the margins of the "big Other's" dominating collective pro-capitalist discourse. That said, it's an expectedly ethical atheism informed by the promise of Marxist critique. I don't find it necessary to his ideas, however, and so I do think there is room for people of informed faith to read Zizek, if only for reference. This book might well be such a digestible introduction.

Cons:
I find gaping holes in any critique of Zizek's frequent disavowal of influences. Instead, we find him saying that such and such thinker in the past agrees with him... O_o And the authors of this book say not one word about that. Mmmkay.

A worthwhile read for both novices and experienced readers of Žižek
By Brian Gilbert
This is a good introductory text to the work of Žižek. Žižek’s work can be extraordinarily dense and difficult to digest but this text does a nice job providing readers with a (very) surface view of his major concepts and contributions to philosophy. I would recommend this text, coupled with Kelsey Wood’s Readers Guide, as a good starting point to engage his work. I have spent the past few years immersed in Žižek’s work as the foundation for my dissertation and still found this book to be thoroughly enjoyable and worth the read.

Basic but sufficient and funny enough
By C. D. Varn
Fairly standard explication of Zizek's ideas until about 2010. It does not significantly discuss Zizek's work on German idealism, but does cover Zizek's reading of Lacan and Christianity as well as his Pre-2010 political ideas fairly clearly and humorously.
