About the Author
Bette Hirsch is Instructor of French at Cabrillo College, California. She holds a BA from the University of Rochester and an MA and PhD from Case Western Reserve University--both in French Literature. She is a member of the original group of instructors trained by ACTFL as Oral Proficiency trainers and then testers in 1982 and 1983, and has conducted proficiency and curriculum workshops in Australia, Canada, Finland, and Japan as well as in the US (in French and ESL).Bette has been President of the Association of Departments of Foreign Languages (ADFL) and served on the Advisory Committee for Foreign Languages and Literatures of the Modern Language Association (MLA), acting as Chair in 1999 through 2000. She has served on the College Board's Foreign Language Advisory Committee and has been an Advanced Placement Reader for ETS. She helped write a Model Curriculum Guide for Secondary School Foreign Language Programs in California, and contributed to the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF) standards project. Bette formed one of the first four model collaborative groups that evolved into the Academic Alliances project. She was a recipient of a French Government Bourse for summer study in Toulon, France in 2003. She currently is a member of the Community College Committee of the MLA.Publications include three textbooks, literary criticism, computer programs, monographs and articles. Her full biography is included in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, Dictionary of International Biography, Who's Who in American Women, and Who's Who in American Education.

Chantal Peron Thompson is a native of Quimper, France. She graduated valedictorian from one of the largest high schools in France (le Lycee de Kerichen a Brest) and developed a love of writing under the spell of the wind-swept coast of Brittany. At age sixteen, she was National Champion of France in the long jump. She went on to attend the University of Rennes and came to the United States to perfect her English and attend graduate school. She ended up getting married and staying! She has been on the faculty at Brigham Young University since 1973 and has earned many teaching awards. The latest is a distinguished University Professorship (1998-2008). She founded the African Studies Program at Brigham Young University and has taken several groups of students to Senegal. She currently directs first-year French courses and trains and supervises a team of fifteen to eighteen student instructors each semester. Thompson is a certified ACTFL Tester and Trainer and conducts workshops worldwide on teaching and testing for proficiency. Her speaking engagements have included keynote addresses at major conferences from Salem, Oregon, to Bangkok, Thailand. She has also presented a series of ACTFL webinars (March-April 2011). Thompson is the primary author of MAIS OUI! a first-year French text (Houghton Mifflin/Cengage Learning 1996, 2000, 2004, 2009, 2012); ENSUITE, a second-year text (McGraw-Hill, 1989, 1993, 1998, 2003); and MOMENTS LITTÉRAIRES, a literary anthology for intermediate-level courses (Heinle/Cengage Learning, 1992, 2006).

I had to use this book for my intermediate college French class. I learned a lot about all the great French writers and poets.
Had a great teacher who made it even more enjoyable. Some things are not easy reading, but it's worth the effort. Since most of the readings are short, it provides a good introduction to French literature.

About Versions: Physical Copy, Kindle, and Translation

Montaigne's Essays are one of the more enjoyable massive tomes of renaissance writing available, and if reading in English, one has two major modern choices of translation, Screech and Frame.

To start with Translation: Both major translations are excellent in their own way, but some differences are of note. When a translation is done, usually the translator will translate the major language of the text, French in this case, and leave quotes by the author from other languages, mostly Latin in this case, untranslated. The translator will provide a note with the translation of the quote, and preferably the source of the quote.

This is where Screech and Frame differ considerably. Screech does what should be done, and Frame just translates everything into English with no significant notations other than the person quoted. This means, however, that one may prefer one translation over the other based on this alone. For example, one that wishes to take a more scholarly look will likely use Screech (or the original), and one that simply wants to read for pleasure may have no problem using the translation by Frame. Also, Screech is British and Frame is American, so one may have other preferences for style.

As for the Physical Copy:

The physical copies of Frame's translation (Stanford and Everyman's) are vastly superior to the Penguin Classics Screech version. The Penguin paperback is thick, but in keeping with the generally small form factor, the print is terribly small, and the paper is of a horrible quality, which is the reason I also purchased the Kindle version.

As for the Kindle version:

The Penguin Classics Kindle file is much more pleasant to read and deal with than the paperback alternative. However, there are many errors in the Kindle version that are not present in the paperback version. It appears some items get corrected occasionally, but still, it is not nice to charge so much for the Kindle version, and not have it completely proofread and ready for primetime.

This actually lead me to have a conversation with a Penguin representative about the quality of the Kindle version, and in that conversation, I learned something I had not realized before. Penguin does not produce the Kindle version. Amazon does. So, all of the quality issues I have noticed in the past about Kindle versions essentially are the fault of Amazon rather than the publisher listed. I suppose the publisher only sells Amazon license to produce the Kindle file and sets price limitations, and Amazon does the rest. This needs to change, because there needs to be more quality control.

However, because of the limitations of the Penguin paperback, I would still recommend the Kindle version if one is to read Screech.

Five stars for Montaigne's Complete Essays, regardless of which version one chooses to read.

Excellent translation.

I have three translations of Montaigne - Cotton, Frame (this one) and Screech (no kidding). The Cotton translation was done in the late 18th century and is some what difficult to read. Frame was done in the 1950's and is very readable. Screech is more recent and is also quite readable. Frame simply translates Montaigne's frequent Latin quotes whereas Screech presents the Latin along with the translation. While this may be more scholarly, it is distracting if you don't read Latin.

The Frame volume includes other works by Montaigne such as his travel journals. Thus, it is more complete than either Cotton or Screech. This volume is over 1300 pages and is not very portable. Still I recommend it as being more complete and a little more readable.

An attractive reader's edition of the Essays

At first I had reservations about buying this because Penguin's site gives a table of contents for this book that is actually from Montaigne's SELECTED Essays. I didn't want to pay this much for a selection, but I took a chance, and was relieved to find that this IS the COMPLETE Essays. The caveat is that although this is a beautiful book, it has no footnotes, introductory material or index. Hence, it is a nice reader's edition, but those looking for a deluxe hardcover version of the 2003 paperback with all its features will be disappointed.

Excellent intro text for programming stats in R

R is a useful freeware that can represent a hurdle to students and/or professionals who do not have formal training in computer programming. This book helps to clear those hurdles, and introduces a solid foundation from which statistics users can build new tools for their specific analyses. The rest of this review is broken up for experienced and new users.

****If you do not have a solid foundation in statistics, this book is not going to help you bridge that gap. Although the title is "Introductory Statistics with R" the author is clear that this is a book to learn how to program intro stats with R, and is not designed to teach any statistics tools. The author assumes you understand statistics and does not clarify statistics terms like p-value, test statistic, degrees of freedom, ANOVA, and the like. ****

New to R:
Although it may sound like a conundrum, the only way to learn a program is to program. Thankfully learning R can be easy, since the program is free, installs well on nearly all machines, and has detailed help files in various languages around the world. This is an excellent book for the R beginner, but I must stress the importance of ACTUALLY PROGRAMMING while you read this book. You CAN NOT read this book cover to cover and expect to learn R, programming doesn't work that way. This book can be a great resource for people who are brand new to R, but it requires hands on utilization of the source codes provided. Thankfully, this step is made that much easier for new users with a detailed explanation of how to obtain the ISWR package used with this text. Like everything in R, packages are free, and contain suites of functions and sometimes data. All the code in this book utilizes data from the ISWR package, so it will be easy to implement the code yourself and get the same results as the author.

Familiar with R:
Someone familiar with the notation in R can read this book cover to cover and find it enlightening. I had been programming in R for coursework in undergraduate statistics for four years before I found this text. It has a lot of useful data management code that people who taught themselves or learned for classes not dedicated to teaching the program will probably find useful. I found a lot of time-saving code that I wish I had known years ago!

One of the best introductory books for R

I have prepared and delivered introductory courses and workshops on statistics and R for the past 3 years. As part of this work, I have reviewed more than a dozen different introductory R books. This is one of my favourite choices (if not my top one). Pete Dalgaard has been a member of the R Core Team since 1997, being a very active and knowledgeable expert on statistics with R. This quickly becomes apparent in the book, since you will find many tricks and smart procedures to accomplish many R tasks, most notably in the data preparation stage (where you spend 70-80% of all working time).

A previous requirement is to acquire basic knowledge on the statistical tools and techniques presented throughout the book. This volume is focused on performing statistical analyses with R, not offering a complete introductory statistics course. However, each chapter starts with a very useful recap of foundations and theory details for the statistical methods and tools presented in it. You can also find good references for further reading.

Summarizing the main positive points:

* Very clear explanations. The writing style is direct, informative, easy-to-follow.

* Content organization is very clear. Every chapter has been conceived as an independent unit that you can read separately (except for the first introductory chapters to R syntax and routinary operations). Thus, you can either read it cover to cover or just jump directly into the chapter or section of your interest (as a reference).

* There is an accompaning R package 'ISwR', that can be found in CRAN (as usual). It includes all datasets and utility functions presented in the text. This is a must to speed up practical sessions using this text as a reference, as well as for self-study.

* Chapter 10 on "Advanced data handling" is simply *invaluable*. You will find yourself recurrently visiting its content in your daily work (well, until you master all these tips).

Perhaps my only complain is that the books reflects the main field of interest of the author, as almost all examples have been taken from the Health Sciences. For example, I guess this is the reason why this 2nd edition includes a chapter on survival analysis (also useful for engineers, but under the different name "analysis of time-to-event data") but it does not include any chapter about times series models or analysis of longitudinal data in general. In any case, I am sincerely thankful to the author for this decision, since this was my first approach to this very interesting technique that I have been using from then on.

A good basic introduction to R

This is great basic introduction to statistics and the use of R. With outside material it could be the main text for an undergraduate course, and it could certainly be the lab manual for a basic stats course that also introduced the use of R.
