Red China Blues: My Long March From Mao to Now, by Jan Wong

Jan Wong, a Canadian of Chinese descent, went to China as a starry-eyed Maoist in 1972 at the height of the Cultural Revolution. A true believer--and one of only two Westerners permitted to enroll at Beijing University--her education included wielding a pneumatic drill at the Number One Machine Tool Factory. In the name of the Revolution, she renounced rock & roll, hauled pig manure in the paddy fields, and turned in a fellow student who sought her help in getting to the United States. She also met and married the only American draft dodger from the Vietnam War to seek asylum in China.

Red China Blues is Wong's startling--and ironic--memoir of her rocky six-year romance with Maoism (which crumbled as she became aware of the harsh realities of Chinese communism); her dramatic firsthand account of the devastating Tiananmen Square uprising; and her engaging portrait of the individuals and events she covered as a correspondent in China during the tumultuous era of capitalist reform under Deng Xiaoping. In a frank, captivating, deeply personal narrative she relates the horrors that led to her disillusionment with the "worker's paradise." And through the stories of the people--an unhappy young woman who was sold into marriage, China's most famous dissident, a doctor who lengthens penises--Wong reveals long-hidden dimensions of the world's most populous nation.

In setting out to show readers in the Western world what life is like in China, and why we should care, she reacquaints herself with the old friends--and enemies of her radical past, and comes to terms with the legacy of her ancestral homeland.

From Publishers Weekly
This superb memoir is like no other account of life in China under both Mao and Deng. Wong is a Canadian ethnic Chinese who, in 1972, at the height of the cultural revolution, was one of the first undergraduate foreigners permitted to study at Beijing University. Filled with youthful enthusiasms for Mao's revolution, she was an oddity: a Westerner who embraced Maoism, appeared to be Chinese and wished to be treated as one, although she didn't speak the language. She set herself to become fluent, refused special consideration, shared her fellow-students rations and housing, their required stints in industry and agriculture and earnestly tried to embrace the Little Red Book. Although Wong felt it her duty to turn in a fellow student who asked for help to emigrate to the West, she could not repress continual shock at conditions of life, and by the time she was nearly expelled from China for an innocent friendship with a "foreigner," much of her enthusiasm, which lasted six years, had eroded. In 1988, returning as a reporter for the Toronto Globe Mail, she was shocked once again, this time by the rapid transformations of the society under Deng's exhortation: "to be rich is glorious." Her account is informed by her special background, a cold eye, a detail. Her description of the events at Tiananmen Square, which occurred on her watch, is, like the rest of the book, unique, powerful and moving.

From Library Journal
" 'Tis better to have believed and lost than never to have believed at all." Concluding her memoir with a paraphrase from Tennyson,Wong vividly describes her 12-year experience in China. At first, as a confused teenager coming of age amid the tumultuous late Sixties and early Seventies in Canada, she became a devoted Maoist, believing China to be "Paradise." She studied and worked in China for six years as an ordinary citizen, going through the Cultural Revolution and the period of the "Gang of Four." Later, as a reporter for the Toronto Globe and Mail, she spent another six years in China, witnessing the Tiananmen massacre, interviewing important dissidents such as Wei Jingsheng and Ren Wanding, and reporting on issues such as birth control and peasant riots in rural areas. The "insider" status gives her account a unique touch that set hers apart from numerous other "journalistic" writings about China. She is describing the people she knows and the events she experienced. Highly recommended.

From Kirkus Reviews
A crackerjack journalist's (she's a George Polk Award winner) immensely entertaining and enlightening account of what she learned during several extended sojourns in the People's Republic of China. A second-generation Canadian who enjoyed a sheltered, even privileged, childhood in Montreal, Wong nonetheless developed a youthful crush on Mao Zedong's brand of Communism. She first visited China in 1972 on summer holiday from McGill University. Although the PRC was still convulsed by the so-called Cultural Revolution, the starry-eyed author enrolled in Beijing University and remained in the country for 15 months. Emotionally bloodied but unbowed by quotidian contact with the harsher realities of Maoism, Bright Precious Wong (as she was known to fellow students and party cadres) mastered Chinese and searched for ways to express solidarity with the masses. Leaving the PRC only long enough to earn a degree from McGill, the author returned in the fall of 1974 for a lengthy stay that made her increasingly aware of Chinese Communism's contradictions and evils. Disturbing encounters with dissidents raised her consciousness of the regime's oppressive policies. Although her zeal diminished, Wong soldiered on, eventually acquiring an American spouse (perhaps the only US draft dodger to seek asylum in the PRC) and a correspondent's job with the New York Times. When President Carter pardoned Vietnam War resisters, the author and her husband came back to North America. She returned to China in 1988 as the Beijing bureau chief of The Toronto Globe & Mail. Experiencing something akin to culture shock at the changes wrought by Deng Xioaping's capitalist-road programs, Wong was an eyewitness to the bloody Tiananmen Square confrontation. She ferreted out long-suppressed truths about penal colonies, the use of prisoners as unpaid laborers, and the public execution of criminals. Tellingly detailed recollections of the journeys of an observant and engaged traveler through interesting times. (Author tour) -- Copyright ©1996, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Engrossing, enlightening, and even funny
By Steve
In her autobiographical “Red China Blues,” author Jane Wong does what the much more vaunted Jung Chang and her similar “Wild Swans” did not. Specifically, she injects much-needed humor and self-effacement along with the obligatory tale of hardship during China’s Cultural Revolution. To be fair, Wong also plays things almost problematically middle-of-the-road, never fully condemning Mao’s edicts nor providing readers, especially bewildered Westerners or seething Chinese the kind of good vs. evil narrative that Chang does. In fact, she gets downright wistful for Mao’s socialist extremism as she frets about the dramatic economic changes that transform China following “The Great Helmsman’s” passing.

Yet, I’m giving her a pass for several reasons, mainly that her honesty is never in question. She tells things as she saw them and doesn’t spare self-condemnation. While she does blame the propaganda she eagerly devoured at the beginning for the climate of frenzied paranoia that defined the Cultural Revolution, she admits that she was a true believer in the promises Mao made. She ends up sadder but wiser even as she strives to make it clear that she doesn’t regret much from her years in China, and I respect that level of personal integrity. Whereas Jung Chang railed at Mao for turning her into a bad person, Jane Wong takes the blame for willingly being duped.

Engrossing, particularly when describing the rigors of life in rural China or the Tiananmen Square nightmare, Wong uses the skills she has as a journalist (and the rigorous journals she kept during her years of indoctrination) to give the reader a genuine first-hand experience. The book tails off a bit during the post-Tiananmen chapters, wherein she chronicles the economic changes in China during the era of Deng Xiaoping, but it’s still an interesting look back at the antecedents that have led to today’s economic circumstances in China. There are a lot of books about the Mao years and their effects on individual Chinese people, yet this is one that not only provides insight, but also a sense of wry humor to what is often written of in angry, bitter, and stark terms.

A must read for anyone interested in China.

Nothing is at it seems. Jan Wong, a teenager during the Vietnam era, was dissatisfied with capitalistic Canada and radically sought change. For Wong the truth was to be found in Mao's 'little Red Book' and her reading room was to be China.
Looking back twenty-five years and with 20/20 hindsight, Jan Wong takes us into the dragon's lair revealing both her youth's ideology and Mao's China gone by. For many who remember the 60's and early 70's you will understand how she could turn her back on the comfort and freedoms of her home in Canada, renouncing all, and go to live in Mao's China. For fourteen years, with a religious, fanatical devotion, Jan Wong dedicated her life to become a missionary of Mao.
Her red world crashed around her in 1976, the year when the cultural Revolution and Chairman Mao died.. All of her sacrifice, all of the suffering she went through as a worker-peasant were for naught, as China drastically discarded Mao's ideology and moved towards a hybrid capitalistic communism. She felt betrayed, suckered and stupid, "I vowed I would never again suspend my disbelief. I promised myself I would question everything. I became a skeptic."
Her opportunity to question everything came when the New York Times hired her as a Journalist in its Beijing office.
Jan Wong's on site coverage of the Tiananmen Square massacre of 2600 Chinese citizen's in 1989 stands out as one of the best on site reports I have read on the subject. Even Mao, in his 40 years of rule, did not turn tanks on his own people, but Deng Xiaping slaughtered his own people to keep his grip on Communist power. She writes, "The guns at Tiananmen Square killed my last illusions about China."
This book is a must read for anyone traveling to China today. It does more to help you understand the current history than a dozen guide books will.

I teach high school Chinese. In at least three documentaries that my class watched, Jan Wong was interviewed. I thought, "Who is this Jan Wong?" The book was excellent. She has seen and experienced so much of China's modern history with her own eyes and ears, living through the Cultural Revolution...watching the Tiananmen Massacre take place from her hotel balcony. I have tremendous respect for her as a person and I also respect her opinions and evaluations in terms of what she imagines China's future will look like. Her stories are always dusted with a bit of humor, as well. I am a huge fan of this book and of Jan Wong.

28: Stories of AIDS in Africa, by Stephanie Nolen

In 28, Stephanie Nolen, the Toronto Globe and Mail's Africa Bureau Chief, puts a human face on the crisis created by HIV/AIDS in Africa. Through riveting anecdotal stories, Nolen brings to life people involved in every aspect of the crisis and explores the effects of an epidemic that well exceeds the Black Plague in magnitude, a calamity ongoing just a 747-flight away. 28's stories are much more than a record of suffering and loss. Through her unprecedented reporting, Nolen introduces women, men, and children fighting vigorously and hopefully on the frontlines of disease: Tigist Haile Michael, a smart, shy 14-year-old Ethiopian orphan fending for herself and her baby brother on the slum streets of Addis Ababa; Alice Kadzanja, an HIV-positive nurse in Malawi, where one in six adults has the virus, and where the average adult's life expectancy is 36; Zachie Achmat, the hero of South Africa's politically fragmented battle against HIV/AIDS. Nolen's stories reveal how the disease works, how it spreads, and how it kills; how it is inextricably tied to conflict, famine, failure of leadership, and the collapse of states, and to the cultures it has ravaged; how treatment works, and how people who can't get it fight to stay alive with courage, dignity, and hope against huge odds. Writing with power, understanding, and simplicity, Stephanie Nolen makes us listen, allows us to understand, and inspires us to care. Timely, transformative, and thoroughly accessible, 28 is essential reading for our times.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. According to UNAIDS, the number of HIV-infected people in Africa is 28 million. But Nolen, veteran Toronto Globe & Mail Africa bureau chief, doesn't believe it: after nine years of reporting on the epidemic, she thinks that number is conservative. Here she offers 28 searing portraits of Africans affected by the deadly virus. Scattered across the continent from the slums of Lagos, Nigeria, to the bush in southern Zambia, these Africans present a mosaic of a continent in crisis and a collective cry for help. She examines the role of soldiers, a "key vector" for AIDS, through the tale of Andualam Ayalew, a commando who was kicked out of the Ethiopian army after testing positive for HIV. He learned of AIDS prevention at a clinic and, risking arrest, returned to his unit to teach his former comrades and other soldiers about using condoms. Agnes Munyiva, a prostitute for 30 years, who has had contact with thousands of men in a slum outside Nairobi, Kenya, does not have HIV. Her natural immunity has brought doctors and researchers from as far away as Canada to study her. With a seasoned journalist's finesse, Nolen effortlessly weaves technical information—health statistics, disease data, NGO reports—into these deeply intimate glimpses of people often overlooked in the flood of contemporary media. Nolen's book packs a real emotional wallop. Photos, map. (June)

From Booklist
Nolen puts a very human face on HIV/AIDS in Africa, verbally and visually. A photograph accompanies each of the book's 28 personal histories (one subject stands for one million infected people in sub-Saharan Africa). The faces in the photos appear no different than faces of everyday Americans, but that appearance belies the horrific reality of lives shredded by devastating disease. The stories, ranging from those of orphaned children on their own, struggling to keep from being raped by adult neighbors, to that of an HIV-positive beauty queen, couldn't be more illustrative of the dissimilarity of Africa to North America. To cite one example, there is 12-year-old Lefa Khoele, stuck in grade 3 because every year he has been too sick to take end-of-year exams. His is a common situation for infected African children. Nolen sees beneath the surfaces of these individuals, estranged and all but destroyed by governmental ineptitude and denial, and evinces their loves and hopes and family ties, their humanness, with which all others can identify. Review
Major acclaim for Stephanie Nolen' s bestseller" 28: Stories of AIDS in Africa"
(a bestseller on the "Maclean' s," the "Globe and Mail" and the "Toronto Star" lists)
" Stephanie Nolen looks behind the facts and stats to talk to 28 people across the continent affected by the virus. Through them, she builds up a larger narrative: of mass social stigma and ignorance; corrupt governments; exploitative drug companies; and a dispassionate and largely disinterested West. A welcome dispatch from an epic disaster we ignore at our peril."
"-- Metro" (London)
" In 28," "Nolen marshals the reporting and storytelling skills that have made her, after UN special envoy Stephen Lewis, this country' s most compelling and vigorous voice for action on the grim parasite worming its way across Africa. In clear, insightful prose and vivid, though never lurid, detail, she allows her characters-- one for every million people-- to tell tales of despair and remarkable courage, willful ignorance and improbable triumph." "
-- The Gazette "(Montreal)
" Nolen is a gifted listener and storyteller . . . Her collection . . . pays loving tribute to the people of Africa . . . Although history and science are woven lightly in and around the anecdotes and photographic portraits of the 28, this is a book about human life and human nature."
-- "The Globe and Mail"
" Nolen puts a very human face on HIV/AIDS in Africa. . . . Nolen sees beneath the surfaces of these individuals, estranged and all but destroyed by governmental ineptitude and denial, and evinces their loves and hopes and family ties, their humanness, with which all others can identify."

" Never sentimental, Nolen lets the people and their experiences speak for themselves. The result is both an informative and a powerful read, which will help Western readers connect personally with a crisis that too often seems remote. . . . A unique, valuable contribution to the literature on this important topic."
-- "Library Journal"
" A kind of continental survey of the impact of the AIDS pandemic on Africa, in stories that are frequently both tragically sad and just as often hugely inspiring."
-- "Calgary Herald"
" 28 searing portraits of Africans affected by the deadly virus. . . . -- "Kingston Whig-Standard"
" She is an evocative and empathetic writer."
-- "The Nation"
" [A] powerful, yet restrained, book. . . . Nolen' s book is . . . a journalist' s honest attempt to tell a powerful story using human interest, anecdotes and poignant quotes in 28 profiles."

" Nolen gives the epidemic a human face - more precisely, 28 human faces, one for each million Africans estimated to be infected with HIV. Ill healthcare workers and activists are portrayed along with ordinary Africans whose lives have been forever changed by AIDS. Nolen tells their stories simply and elegantly, blending their personal experiences with relevant background information about the epidemic. Never sentimental, she lets the people and their experiences speak for themselves. With a seasoned journalist' s finesse, Nolen effortlessly weaves technical information - health statistics, disease data, NGO reports - into these deeply intimate glimpses of people often overlooked in the flood of contemporary media. Nolen' s book packs a real emotional wallop."
- "Publishers Weekly
"
" Magnificent, inspiring, informative. Nolen opens the essential door to the brave, suffering, human reality of the African AIDS crisis."
- John le Carre
" This is a formidable book of record . . . from the tiny virus, via 28 individual humanstories, to an entire continent. The stories will tear you apart before putting you back together, fully-armed and ready to go to war with a virus more dangerous than any W.M.D."
- Bono
" This book is magnificent. It' s probably the best book ever written about AIDS, certainly the best I' ve ever read. I wept when I finished, not just because it' s beautifully written, not just because the last chapter tears the heart out, not just because it' s a work of such force and feeling and power, not just because it' s so intensely and astonishingly human, not just because it covers the entire landscape of the virus, but because its impact could shape public opinion as never before."
- Stephen Lewis, former UN Special Envoy HIV/AIDS in Africa
" A book of quiet yet overwhelming power, delivering a message of devastating moral authority. Moving, heartrending and uplifting, Stephanie Nolen' s book bears impeccable witness to the ' unique and savage' phenomenon of AIDS in Africa."
- William Boyd, author of Restless and Brazzaville Beach
" If a war had killed 20 million soldiers, and left 28 million more dying of wounds, we' d call it the worst such tragedy since World War II. This is the scale of AIDS in Africa. Stephanie Nolen brings this story to life in a moving, deeply human way. Through these portraits - shrewdly chosen, varied, and sometimes startlingly unexpected- she artfully puts a series of human faces on the greatest health crisis of our time."
- Adam Hochschild, author of King Leopold' s Ghost and Bury the Chains
" 28 can soon be 48, 98 and more. And not just in Africa. And it does not have to be. Nolen shows that the struggle of one to live with dignity must be the struggle of all. Read. Weep. Rage. And above all else - like those people described in this brilliant book- find the courage to "do,""
- Dr. James Orbinski, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of Me decins Sans Frontie res
" AIDS in Africa is an enigma. The more it spreads, the less we see it. It is deadly yet deniable. It hides in full view of everyone. What this moving book does is to catch it by the tail and show us its face - "it is our own,""
- Christopher Hope, author of My Mother' s Lovers
" Essential reading in the Age of AIDS, it is never earnest, and, whilst often painful, full of humane and painstakingly researched detail."
- Emma Thompson

"From the Hardcover edition."

A Book That Will Move You -- To Action
By Meg Cox
It sounds weird to say it, but I couldn't put this book down. All the stories are so compelling and so well-written. Nolen doesn't tell one story over and over, but tells many stories using very diverse people. Her courage is obvious: she hung out with a long-haul trucker, a sex worker, and people with AIDS who had only days left to live. I was especially intrigued by the stories of the infected ones who became powerful advocates. What this book left me with wasn't the sense that "these people are pathetic victims we richer folk need to help," but that these are resilient, strong, interesting human beings suffering a horrid situation with little or no resources, and we should help them help themselves. As a journalist, I'm in awe of Stephanie Nolen in every respect. As a reader, I'm compelled to respond. I highly recommend the related website, [...], where you can read about each of the 28 briefly, and see a video interview of several. The website and book both give many ideas for how you can help. Start by reading a book that could change your life.

Intimate portraits that will pull on your emotions and intellect
By R. Hokanson
I bought this book after hearing an interview with the author on NPR. Then it rested on a pile of books to read for over a year. It didn't seem like the type of book you want to take to the beach or vacation. Or a book to read and put yourself to sleep at night. Then I started to read it one day after hearing of relief work in Africa from a friend. I read several of the profiles/stories. I kept thinking, ok, she has put the most dramatic ones in the front of the book. They can't be that much different after a few. And I was proven wrong. Every story was unique. They are unique from so many different perspectives. Yet they all have the common theme and sensitivity brought to the reader by a very skilled and aware reporter. Nolen doesn't just drop in on someone and do a quick interview. She wraps many dimensions around each story--human, family, love, economic, political, education and so much more. I encourage interested readers to look at the other reviews. Then buy the book. But don't wait to read it.

I haven't read this book yet, it arrived today, but, I am aware of the epidemic of HIV in Africa, it's not 28, it's over 28 million, I buy hand crafted jewelry made by HIV + women in Africa, it's beautiful , inexpensive and I git it when ever I can.

The music is filled with many influences---from bebop and swing to Baroque music, Impressionism, and modern jazz. Titles: Angels from the Realms of Glory * Coventry Carol * God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen * Jingle Bells * Silent Night * Ukrainian Bell Carol * We Three Kings.

Great jazz arrangements of festive tunes
By ClockMan
Cunliffe's arrangements are quite refreshing and easy to sightread for the advanced player, but for an intermediate player, may need some practice especially on those fast runs.

I love the set even though I won't be performing most of them except for myself.
By Gregory Whitfield
I'm an advanced player and sightreader. There are definite challenges here if I wanted to have a polished performance. Two numbers just blew me by their beauty: Coventry Carol and Silent Night. My audience of one will be playing these repeatedly. I will enjoy playing all the others without the pressure of getting performance ready.

Review
Doing things like this made me love building projects and made me feel special when I was quite young. The knowledge of how to do such things is around but it's almost always more important to get youngsters to WANT to do thing like this. Sylvia carries that motivation factor so well that I actually would want to embark on these projects myself. The hardest steps are the beginning ones and these projects are simple enough to not lose the interest of youngsters who want to build things in their lives.  - Steve Wozniak, cofounder of Apple

"What a refreshing and original book! Sylvia's Super-Awesome Project Book: Super-Simple Arduino by Super-Awesome Sylvia is packed with whimsy, energy, and tons of practical "hands-on" activities to get kids excited about microcontroller engineering, science and programming. This is also a great book for parents and teachers who should be joining their kids at the "maker table!" Bravo, Sylvia! Super-awesome!!"
- Peter H. Reynolds, NY Times Bestselling author & illustrator, The Dot, Ish, The Judy Moody series

"When kids encounter Arduino, they quickly realize that it's possible to create almost anything they can dream of. Sylvia is the best teacher I could imagine to introduce them to this powerful, easy-to-use electronics prototyping platform." - Mark Fraunfelder, Founding editor-in-chief of MAKE magazine

"Sylvia's super awesome explanations and illustrations illuminate the often intimidating introduction to Arduino. Easy to read, clear, and funny, this book has everything a kid (even a big one) needs to get started tinkering and coding their own projects with confidence." - Pat Yongpradit, Director of Education, Code.org

About the Author
Super-Awesome Sylvia started making and tinkering with things when she was 7, and loves to try new things. Millions of views later, Sylvia has covered everything from hobby rocketry, to sewable soft circuits. The show has garnered attention from parents and educators the world over. Learners of all ages report that the show gets students them in making things and learning something along the way. She is a girl scout and has three younger siblings.

Sylvia has been profiled on network news, People Magazine, and in the New York Times.

In 2014, Sylvia became an author by launching a series of full-color children's books, "Sylvia's Super-Awesome Project Books," published by Constructing Modern Knowledge Press.

Super Awesome Arduino Book is Super-Awesome!
By Tracy Rudzitis
I teach a middle school STEAM Lab and my students are in the midst of a circuit and electricity project. This book is a fantastic resource for the students who are working with the Arduino for the first time. Sylvia's projects using sound and lights captivate the imaginations of my students and her easy to understand and easy to follow instructions means that students can work on projects without feeling overwhelmed.

This book does an excellent job in providing basic projects for students to tackle, then once the student has constructed project, provides a detailed examination of the concepts, the code, and the components used. Once basic ideas are understood, Sylvia provides creative and challenging ways to modify or extend the projects.

This is not a step-by-step recipe book where all projects end up the same, but a project book that provides starting points and information to learn the basics with challenges and ideas to push beyond the ordinary.

Super Awesome Sylvia stays true to her mantra by sharing ...
By @briancsmith
Super Awesome Sylvia stays true to her mantra by sharing simple projects young makers (including adult children) that encourage them to get out there and start making. Along with a team of bot buddies, Sylvia leads budding makers on an adventure into a new world of making, tinkering and learning. What I really like about this book is that no experience is necessary and kids won't need to read through a lot of theory or explanations before getting started. Like master teachers, when explanations are necessary, Sylvia and our bot buddies provide just-in-time learning snippets explaining concepts. Also shared are ways to extend projects to be even better. This book will definitely be a hit with makers in our school's maker studio. Get this book into a youngsters hands and they will soon be out making something!

The Guide I Was Looking For
By Joshua Burker
Although I teach elementary school technology, I have been intimidated to embrace the Arduino and try learning to use it. This guide was exactly what I needed to overcome my hesitancy and jump in. Lavishly illustrated by Sylvia herself, this project book leads the Arduino novice through three projects of increasing challenge in an easy to follow, fun way. Each project builds on lessons from the previous, so the lessons are never overwhelming and information is presented as it is relevant, instead of piled on you at the beginning of the book. I look forward to using this guide as I start exploring programming the Arduino!

What readers have said about Ace Your Teacher Interview: 149 Fantastic Answers to Tough Interview Questions

I just got my dream job in a great school district because this book made me a more desirable candidate.

This should be required reading for all Education Majors. I spent one year looking for a teaching job with no luck. I bought this book, and it taught me what I was doing wrong in interviews and on applications. I now have a full time teaching job that I love!

Excellent tips! I have interviewed multiple times; then I read the book and landed my first teaching job!

As the title promises, I aced all of my interviews and had multiple job offers.

I had three interviews. Offered two jobs and I got to choose which I wanted most!

Every question I was asked in the interview was in this book!

Great addition to my interview prep
By J. B.
There is a lot of great advice in here. I read the whole thing...twice...and referenced the questions later on multiple times. There are a few typos and formatting errors (most likely due to the conversion to Kindle version, which is what I got) but the information is all there. I felt confident going in to interviews and I was told multiple times that I was very well-prepared. I did end up landing a job (after 8 interviews, but I'm in a tough market) and I've been told by everyone on my interview panel how great my answers were and how well prepared I was (don't forget to RESEARCH YOUR SCHOOL, that was a big seller that tipped the odds from one candidate to me). Buy this if you're nervous about interviewing or a looking for your first teaching job (like me!)

A lot of the information it gives is pretty common sense

It's a fairly quick read, and there were lots of valuable practice questions. It's definitely aimed at first year teachers (makes a lot of references to going into teaching straight out of college which I found odd), but I'm sure veteran teachers could take something away from this too. A lot of the information it gives is pretty common sense, but it's still useful to have it reiterated. I think the most valuable part of the book for me was all the practice questions inside, and the chapter about how principals are looking for someone to make their job easier. Again, common sense, but it changed the way I was thinking about interviews. I got offered a job at the first interview I went to after reading this.
