Like others have said, it sucks.

Like others have said this is a real disappointment. To general, entire procedures are missing, pictures are not particularly well labeled, etc. I ended up getting a factory service manual online and while its a big book it satisfies my needs much better. Do not buy this book.

Haynes copped out...

I've always gone with Haynes manuals in the past. I preferred the way they were written and illustrated to Chilton. That said, I was very disappointed in this manual when I began looking into the various jobs I was considering performing on my Tacoma. My first impression, in agreement with other reviews, was that this manual tries to cover too many different models. Because of this, some of the procedures become muddled and hard to follow for a specific vehicle. However, my biggest complaint is that the author/publisher makes decisions for us about what may or may not be cost effective/beyond our skill level and provides no information on operations deemed thus. This is absolutely unacceptable and it kinda makes me angry. Specifically, I wanted procedures for removing the differentials from my axle housings, particularly the front, as the back seems pretty straight forward. It's one of the reasons i bought the manual. Instead, I got nothing. I'm wondering if tearing down and rebuilding an entire engine isn't too difficult for the DIYer, what's so frikkin' tough about changing ring and pinions, or carrier bearings, or inspecting your ring and pinions for chips or cracks.

Come on, Haynes, give us the procedures and let us decide if the tooling is too expensive or the skills are beyond us. Don't make that decision for us. Based on a COMPLETE tear down and rebuild? I think not.

At best: decent, at worst: decently helpful

Good manual but leaves a lot to be desired. I have the FSM for the 2001 Tacoma, and way, way better than this but it was also $500 for volumes 1 & 2. So that's why I'm going four instead of 3 stars. It is decent, however, they are too general with the different models and trims. It will show a pic of a 4Runner then later in the sequence a taco, then a t100.
The General maintainence is very good and the basics too. In depth, it leaves a lot more vague information that can have you guessing. It gives great info on how to change a timing belt, but crummy info on, say how to remove a grill or replace light bulbs and head lamps.

Bottom line: if you don't have or can't borrow or buy a $500+ FSM, yeah it is at best and worst, a decent buy. It has its credits and deficiencies but definitely better than nothing.

The standard for MSE books.

Taking a materials science/mechanical engineering course that uses this book and I love it.

Very clear writing/explanations, use of intuitive notation, problems gradually get tougher at a reasonable rate. Although my area is more in control systems, this MSE book has been really interesting. I'd take another course in it if I had time.

Book definitely assumes you have the prerequisites though -- some of the math can get tricky, but's all reasonable for an undergrad. Excellent colors/visually appealing. I think MSE is a very visual subject, and since I'm not a visual person, it really helps to see what's going on with clear diagrams/pictures.

My professor said this is a classic MSE book and I can see why. Two thumbs up.

Covers all the Material you need

This book covers everything you'll want to know for the foundation of material science and engineering. Great book that explains the concepts well and efficiently. I've gone to this book several times for covering topics I didn't cover in class, and the book did a great job of catching me up. I even used this for other classes like Fluid Mechanics or Heat Transfer. It's got it all. The example problems, while sometimes basic, provided you a great way to know if you understand the (wait for it....) material!

Love this book

I sold my newer edition and got an older edition (costs less money). This book has great detail and great at explaining things. I am a materials engineer and this is by far my most referenced book for a jumping off point. If you are unclear about something, I would start with this book and it will provide general details. After that, you can use resources that are more focused on a certain subject. I use it to refresh on basic ideas all of the time. This book provides such a strong foundation you would be crazy not to have it on your book shelf for reference if you do anything really materials oriented.

Interesting theory, yet lacking depth

I first came across the author in a TED video. Her talk about how "not yet" generates far more power than "fail" was interesting and I decided to buy her book to further read into her studies. The book in general is an interesting piece of work. I like the way she describes the "growth mindset". However, most of the book seems to focus on discussing the difference between "fixed mindset" and "growth mindset" applied to different fields. So it does get very predictable and tedious. There is far not enough discussion about how to better develop the "growth mindset". It is like the author uses the entire book to emphasize how important "growth mindset" is but doesn't really offer much help. In particular, I don't like how she attributes every corporate failure to "fixed mindset". I think it is way too generalizing and over-simplifying.

Great read and concepts.

Mindset: The New Psychology of Success - by Carol Dweck.
Just finished this book for book club. It's a great book with a new concept that you'll be able to see the truth in many around you. People either having a fixed or growth mindset in areas of their lives. I like knowing about the concepts in the book and think it's worth the read. Super interesting and helpful. Might not agree with the rigidity of it but definitely think it's helpful and has truths.
It will help me influence others and myself to be able to change and grow, embrace new challenges positively and love the dynamic of life that leads to growth and health.

An Excellent Read for Organizational Development & Training Professionals!

This book, Mindset, by Carol Dweck, has been thoroughly enjoyed by this reader! I have not yet finished it, as I am among three other titles that I bounce among depending upon my mood. Also, this is easy for me as I own a Kindle.
I just read, and captured in a Word document, a short chapter in the book entitled, “Corporate Training: Are Managers Born or Made?”. For me, this chapter alone was worth the purchase of the book. This chapter describes a workshop in which managers are presented with concepts and strategies that are growth-mindset oriented.

Suppose managers in a workshop did these things: a) reach an understanding of why it’s important that people can develop their abilities, b) identify areas where they once had LOW ability but now perform well, c) write a struggling protégé about how his or her abilities can be developed, and d) recall times they have seen people learn to do things they never thought these people could do. And in each case, they would reflect upon why and how change takes place!

The description of the workshop process above, coupled with two suggestions by the author, offer both direction and hope for future organizational leaders. The first suggestion generally was to employ/seek out people who have a growth mindset and a passion for learning. The other brilliant suggestion was making a growth-mindset workshop the first step in any major training program!

I have worked in a corporate training environment and in the management development area as an internal consultant, content developer, facilitator of workshops dealing with leadership development, coaching, team leadership, team development, change, personal development (MBTI), communications, motivation, conflict, process improvement, customer service, quality, etc. I witnessed first-hand managers who were not open to learning, to growth; they were stuck in default modes. Many sorted folks out into winner/loser categories that most often became self-fulfilling. I think Dweck’s suggestion to expose these “types” to a growth-mindset workshop could be the catalyst for a real learning change (if we could restrict the use of digital communications devices during the sessions!)

I am a bit put-out, displeased at the reviewers who disparaged this book, in one case saying it was of no value beyond the first chapter. To those reviewers I say: I am convinced to the contrary! I am looking for what the book is: it is a valuable resource which offers hope to those in leadership positions trying to improve their own authentic performance and the performance of those they LEAD (not manage). Leaders see the potentials of their people, then provide the direction, support, and feedback that required for individual/team success on task/mission.

The book has been a most informative, fun read! I enjoyed reading about the growth mindset of athletes like Michael Jordan.

There are MANY positive takeaways from the book, and I think most future readers will find the book very beneficial.

The best book of its kind .

I have spent thousands of dollars and built a sizable library over the years on the subject of spirits and their production with an eye on some day opening a cidery and or a small distillery. Without a doubt this is the most comprehensive and informative book I have found. This book approaches the subject matter in a scientific strait forward manner supplying details at a level necessary to anyone interested in entering the industry. If I had to pick one book on alcoholic beverage production this is the the book .It is the only book I have found that spells out the details without the reader feeling the authors either don't know the subject matter or they are intentionally omitting "trade secrets".
Mandatory reading for everyone in the business or thinking of getting in.
Note : I require all new employees to read this book. It is not cheap but worth every penny.

What every brewer needs to know.

It's pretty much all here. Past, Present, Future.

This tome provided me with plenty of historical context; as in "how they used to brew" coupled with the current science of the brewing art.

I really appreciated not only the "how" but also the "why" of fermented beverage preparation.

This is a very detailed, concisely worded book that explains in great detail all aspects of fermented beverages. The best I've ever encountered and answered all the questions I could ever have even pondered. Worth the price for the knowledge gained. Didn't give 5 stars as I leave that for miracles. This is close.

This is one of the most comprehensive guides to financial modelling with 27 financial models described in detail. The most impressive thing about the book is that the author has written computer programs for each model and included the code in the book so the reader can program and run the model themselves. I have never seen another book have this, Brilliant!

British academic Segal (Is the Future Female?), a professor of psychology and gender studies at London's Birkbeck College, gracefully explores the subject of aging in this combination memoir and analysis. Segal outlines fears about growing older and discusses our culture's ingrained negative attitudes about the elderly female body, as well as men's fear of losing their masculinity as they age. The author also highlights the joys of love and sexuality as one grows older. The book's most politically charged section addresses the inevitable effects of the increasing class divide on the elderly; the younger generations, hit hardest by the recession, blame the baby boomers for the poor economy, while the older generations are already struggling with the fact that financial security is necessary for aging happily. While Segal seamlessly incorporates psychoanalytic theory and passages from writers like Simone de Beauvoir, John Updike, and Alice Walker, she also offers her own perspective as a feminist and scholar, reminding readers that the process of aging is never simple or straightforward. Lynne Segal is Anniversary Professor of Psychology and Gender Studies in the Department of Psychosocial Studies at Birkbeck College. Her books include Is the Future Female? Troubled Thoughts on Contemporary Feminism; Slow Motion: Changing Masculinities, Changing Men; and Straight Sex: Rethinking the Politics of Pleasure. She co-wrote Beyond the Fragments: Feminism and the Making of Socialism with Sheila Rowbotham and Hilary Wainwright.

Out of Patience With Out of Time

I ordered the Kindle edition after reading a rave review in the Economist, a British publication. There is an average of 88 footnotes per chapter. Try turning the Kindle page without touching a footnote number! Kindle takes you immediately to the footnote and then you need to spend minutes trying to go back to where you were reading. Paging back doesn't do it. There were many long quotes from various feminists and I found it difficult to segue from the quotation to the author's point of view. The book reads like a doctoral thesis. The material was interesting but poorly presented. I am a 72 year old woman and have never looked into the mirror and seen "with horror" my mother's image. This was a recurring theme in the book. The many joys that growing older can bring were given scant attention. I finished the book, however I'll admit I skimmed many parts just to get on with it. The author was far too much in the background, buried by all her quotations from other people. What did she think - where was her voice?

An issue lightly viewed.

The thesis is good and many of the comments would accord with my own thinking on aging and its social problems. I am left wondering why Ms Segal has relied so heavily on the views and musings of noted authors on the subject. Interesting no doubt but scarcely authoritative and her own autobiographical reflections are more valuable. She correctly identifies what we all know are the issues: anonymity; loneliness; loss; and ever diminishing horizons.

Feminism and aging

Lynne Segal's Out of Time is a well-written exploration of how women experience aging in today's society. The male reviewers here have noted that it is primarily about women and thus of no real interest to them, which mirrors the general male indifference to the problems of older women, but this demonstrates why this is a much needed book. Segal acknowledges the very gendered aspect of aging, which affects women much more than men. Most of the elderly are women, who are more likely to be financially poor (sometimes as the result of taking care of aging spouses) and despite their social networks, more likely to be aging alone. As Segal points out, older women are not only marginalized and ignored in patriarchy, they are also disregarded by younger, feminist women. How do older women craft an identity for themselves in a world where they are either treated as they are invisible or as objects of cultural contempt? Nobody wants to be an old lady, but it happens to us whether we want to or not. This is a thoughtfully written book and well worth reading.

About the Author
Donna M. Gollnick is an international consultant for accreditation. She served as Senior Consultant for the transition of the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) to a new accrediting organization, the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) after being the Senior Vice President for NCATE for 25 years. She has had an extensive career of national leadership in teacher education as well as continuing national leadership in multicultural education. She is lead author of a leading text in multicultural education: Gollnick & Chinn, Multicultural Education in a Pluralistic Society, 9th Edition. With Gene Hall, she is a coauthor of one of the leading educational foundations textbooks: Johnson et al., Foundations of American Education, 15th Edition.

The author contradicts them self by using opinions and not facts to slander those that don't fit the profile in the chapters discussed. I felt insulted at points, as an Anglo-Saxon female teacher reading comments about how I'll never be able to teach a student of a different race, class, sex, nationality, etc. to the fullest potential because I will never understand those students. It would be different if facts backed every degrading statement. I would accept researched declarations and statistics (which does happen for some topics and are great resources to trust), but most are not backed.

So thank you for making me feel inferior and bad about myself for being something out of my control. As if there wasn't already enough garbage out there to make me feel bad about myself, I didn't need a book used for a master's level program also to bring me​ down.

It presents opinions on what is right and wrong and is highly critical of ideas like individualism and merit

To start, I consider myself to be a moderate on the political spectrum. I have a bachelor's in history and my focus was on Soviet history. And let me tell you, this is it baby, communism right here. I had to read this for a class pursuing my masters in teaching and barely passed because the content is so divisive and ugly. From cover to cover it labels and generalizes every single possible social group and spends almost no time at all mentioning anything people have in common. It presents opinions on what is right and wrong and is highly critical of ideas like individualism and merit. It also assumes that being a member of the majority means you are closed off and don't care about other groups and everyone needs to be forced out of a shell. The only parts of this book I appreciated seemed like really common sense that mom and dad should have taught you about tolerance and empathy, not college course material.

It was a well written book which was easy to read

Book arrived ready for the binder I already had. It has been a valuable resource as we explore how to implement a foundation of multicultural systems in our classroom. It was a well written book which was easy to read. The case studies were relevant to planning for a multicultural classroom. What I liked best was the underlying message of 'base your conversations on facts...not beliefs." The researcher in me appreciated the reminder to verify what really are our differences and similarities...not just listen to sound bites.
