Good for those who already have a background in the language
By andrzej92
As a U.S. born Polak, I have always wanted to learn the language and did not want to spend the money on a product like Rosetta Stone so naturally books would be something to try. This book is excellent with teaching the grammar of the language and allowing you to fully understand how Polish works. There are plenty of exercises to practice, more than enough in fact. The only downside to this workbook is that there are a large amount of undefined words used in the later chapters.

This book works wonderfully, but if you do not know the definitions of some everyday words already, or some non-everyday words. Do yourself the favor and have a Polish-English dictionary handy because you will need it.

poorly designed and not for beginners
By A. J. Christian
Although this book claims to "assume no previous knowledge of Polish," this is quite incorrect. The book begins logically with noun genders and adjectives, but it assumes you already have learned a decent level of Polish vocab, or else you'll be searching (as I was) for nearly every word in the dictionary, instead of concentrating on the grammar rule at hand. To illustrate my point, exercise 3 of unit 2 asks for the following phrases to be translated into Polish: "1. big hats, 2. Polish palaces, 3. colourful umbrellas, 4. comfortable hotels, 5. pretty countries, etc." Up to this point however, very few of these words are translated into Polish, and those few that were, only in passing. This might be permissable in a vocab-builder (provided it asks for translations of words it's already defined for you earlier), but in what is supposed to be a grammar book, it distracts and detracts greatly from my learning the grammar lesson, as I waste so much time finding the words. Had the book provided the translations (or even just the gender!), but un-declinated, etc., next to each entry, it would've helped greatly--the student would see the Polish words next to their English equivalents, while allowing him to stay focused on the grammar lesson at hand.

This book would be much better if it allowed the student to focus more on the grammar. Right from the beginning, it foists large numbers of Polish words on the student without defining them, which detracts from the learning of the grammar rules. A good grammar workbook should actually have very little vocabulary (or should provide a translation and gender for every new word right on the same page the first time it's mentioned), allowing the student to focus on the grammar rules and not definitions.

I would also like to correct the earlier reviewer. After looking at the entry on the page, I believe it's not really an error per se, just a poorly written sentence. In discussing the adjective endings modifying plural "men" nouns, the author writes that the default adjective ending in this case is "i" (trudny -> trudni), but becomes "'y' after k and g." This implies that you would see "gy" or "ky" at the end of these adjectives, right? But he says earlier that "y" never comes after a "k" or "g" in Polish. Is it a misprint? Well, what I think he means is that when you have an adjective whose last consonant is a "k" or "g," you change its final syllable, which ends in a "y." ie. drogi -> drogie -> drodzy. Here we have an adjective whose last consonant is a "g" and when modifying a plural "men" noun, it ends in "y," so what the author means to say is correct, but he states it very poorly--to the point of appearing contradictory to something he wrote just five pages earlier.

All in all, I don't believe this book is worth the expense. This is my first Polish grammar workbook (although I did see many grammar workbooks when I learned German, so I know what's effective, regardless of language), and I haven't seen what else is on the market, but the faults it has (pointless distractions from the grammar lesson at hand; poorly written or confusing explanations) mar its effectiveness greatly. I did learn the grammar lesson for each unit, but not without undo frustration caused by poor writing and superfluous vocabulary. However, with what appears to be a dearth of anything comparable on the market, you might just have to get this book and suffer through its frustrations in order to learn the grammar.

The author would've done well to have sat back, decided exactly what grammar point he wanted to get across to the student in each unit, and given exercises that kept driving at that point (or built upon the points from the earlier units), without forcing the student to learn huge amounts of new vocab at the same time.

Exactly what I wanted but not for everyone ...
By David Snopek
I agree very much with the previous poster's complaints about vocabulary and clearity. You have to memorize a good 300 words to get through all of the books exercises comfortably even though vocabulary is not its goal. Also, the choice of vocabulary tends to side with the obscure. The author is attempting to explain *all* the rules including the regular but not very high frequency exceptions. She includes a handful of examples for each pattern, easily out numbering the common case. This also takes a lot away from clearity, making the language seem much more complicated than it actually is. A better introduction would have focused on drilling all the high frequency rules and simply introducing the exceptions.

All of that said, this book was exactly what I wanted. I have been studying Russian for a number of years with only a little experience with Polish, and this book was better for me than any beginner's language textbook. I just wanted to quickly memorize the rules, and start experimenting with the language. As a person who is familiar with highly inflected languages (and Russian in particular which has very similar grammar), I really actually wanted all of the rules and not just the common case.

Its a great book, but if you are starting from nothing, it cannot be your only text. This is a much better book for the slightly more advanced Polish learner.

Soda Politics: Taking on Big Soda (And Winning), by Dr. Marion Nestle

Sodas are astonishing products. Little more than flavored sugar-water, these drinks cost practically nothing to produce or buy, yet have turned their makers--principally Coca-Cola and PepsiCo--into a multibillion-dollar industry with global recognition, distribution, and political power. Billed as "refreshing," "tasty," "crisp," and "the real thing," sodas also happen to be so well established to contribute to poor dental hygiene, higher calorie intake, obesity, and type-2 diabetes that the first line of defense against any of these conditions is to simply stop drinking them. Habitually drinking large volumes of soda not only harms individual health, but also burdens societies with runaway healthcare costs.

So how did products containing absurdly inexpensive ingredients become multibillion dollar industries and international brand icons, while also having a devastating impact on public health?

In Soda Politics, the 2016 James Beard Award for Writing & Literature Winner, Dr. Marion Nestle answers this question by detailing all of the ways that the soft drink industry works overtime to make drinking soda as common and accepted as drinking water, for adults and children. Dr. Nestle, a renowned food and nutrition policy expert and public health advocate, shows how sodas are principally miracles of advertising; Coca-Cola and PepsiCo spend billions of dollars each year to promote their sale to children, minorities, and low-income populations, in developing as well as industrialized nations. And once they have stimulated that demand, they leave no stone unturned to protect profits. That includes lobbying to prevent any measures that would discourage soda sales, strategically donating money to health organizations and researchers who can make the science about sodas appear confusing, and engaging in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities to create goodwill and silence critics. Soda Politics follows the money trail wherever it leads, revealing how hard Big Soda works to sell as much of their products as possible to an increasingly obese world.

But Soda Politics does more than just diagnose a problem--it encourages readers to help find solutions. From Berkeley to Mexico City and beyond, advocates are successfully countering the relentless marketing, promotion, and political protection of sugary drinks. And their actions are having an impact--for all of the hardball and softball tactics the soft drink industry employs to maintain the status quo, soda consumption has been flat or falling for years. Health advocacy campaigns are now the single greatest threat to soda companies' profits. Soda Politics provides readers with the tools they need to keep up pressure on Big Soda in order to build healthier and more sustainable food systems.

Review

2016 James Beard Award for Writing & Literature Winner

"The soda industry is a powerful economic operator. Economic power readily translates into political power. Soda Politics is exactly the kind of carefully-researched investigative reporting needed to open the eyes of the public and parliamentarians to the health hazards of what is, as the author rightly notes, essentially liquid candy in a bottle." --Dr. Margaret Chan, Director-General, World Health Organization

"Long recognized as an important and informed voice in our national and international discussions on nutrition and health, Marion Nestle has written another book that will keep us talking. With an impressive combination of scholarship and advocacy, Dr. Nestle takes an unflinching look at the soda industry, its products and the impact on health. Soda Politics deserves the attention of the public and policy makers, and should make us all think more carefully about choices we can make to improve health and well-being." --Margaret Hamburg, M.D., Former Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration

"Marion Nestle is one of the greatest muckrakers of our time, and what she does is vitally important-for our health, our environment, and for future generations. Here, she wages war against the soda titans with such piercing clarity and so many irrefutable truths that all other arguments crumble." --Alice Waters, Founder and Proprietor of Chez Panisse

"Comprehensive and well-written, this book will help frame a thoughtful public policy debate about nutrition and the societal impacts and costs of obesity." --Ann M. Veneman, Former US Secretary of Agriculture and Former Executive Director of UNICEF

"What happens when the food industry's most insightful critic turns her sights on soda? This razor-sharp, fun to read, plan-of-battle for one of the greatest public health fights of our time. Big soda may have all the money, but those who would enter this fray, as we all should, now have their champion." --Michael Moss, Author of Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us

"For decades, soda companies have amassed fortunes off drinks that are making us sick. It took someone like Marion Nestle to cut through the spin and uncover the high cost of cheap sodas." --Robert Kenner, Director/Producer, Food Inc. and Merchants of Doubt

"No book in history has so completely laid bare the soda scourge that touches every corner of the world. Marion Nestle shows how this happened, its impact on human health and well-being, who the players are, and, most importantly, what might be done. This is the right book at the right time." --Dr. Kelly Brownell, Dean, Sanford School of Public Policy, Duke University

"An outstanding manual for health educators, activists, and anyone seeking information about the soda industry and its impact on health." - Library Journal

"If you have been exhausted by the flip-flop of Brexit politics in recent weeks, Soda Politics offers a refreshing break - a great read for dietitians." -NHDmag

The Sweet Devil of Deception
By Ron Pelham
Everybody likes sweet stuff. We are programmed to go for the sweetness. But not all the time, every day, in such concentrated high doses. Sugary drink companies have hijacked our common sense through outright lies, savvy advertising, and buying off our politicians and some unscrupulous scientists. This book presents the facts through historical timelines. It is shocking to see how Big Soda companies closely parallel that of death merchant tobacco companies. Read for yourself and protect you, your family, friends and loved ones from this sweet poison. Big Soda is clearly a Big Health destroyer...big time...

A very important book for those wishing to stay healthy
By MGV
An excellent eye-opener that delves into how the Big Corporates like the Coca-Cola company "manage" the marketing of their products. Knowing well their products like the Coke are nothing more than sugared drinks with zero nutritional value and have serious harmful effects on humans, these companies have historically and systematically undermined the advice of groups promoting good health. The book is very well researched and makes abundantly clear how people are duped into buying products that are harmful to them. One such example being how the popular nutrition "experts" are co-opted into "soft-marketing" a company's products by equivocating about their harmful effects. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about being well-informed about their food habits and staying healthy over the course of their lives.

What are we really talking about?
By Mrk
Strong thinking from Kernberg in the pre-post-classical sens? What do I mean?Thats the question I am asking to Kernberg. The language is a mix bag.Sometime classical, sometime interpersonal and object relational or sometime ego oriented it is difficult to follow a real thread here.In that sens I believe Kohut is way ahead conceptually and in the consistency of his thinking.
My main objection here;the patient is shown rather on the guilty side rather that on the "victimized by the family" side.So we still are in an all,old Freudian Victorian type of school.Society is not responsible, the patient is.This position is not sustainable in 2010.
Fundamentally it is a very good book especially on narcissism but the equation language/thinking is outdated.
Concepts and language dont match because today "trauma and dissociation" radical developments, discoveries and datas have changed everything and turned 100% the psychoanalytic world up side down. So what we do need here is a good 2010 update.

The definitive book on Borderline Personality Disorder
By Sophia Bezirganian
When I first heard Dr. Kernberg speak, I thought he deserved his reputation as a brilliant but intimidating psychiatrist. After reading this book I came away with a very different understanding-- that he is not simply a master theoretician on personality disorder, but also a gifted healer, with deep understanding and wisdom in his approach to his patients. First written in 1975, this book remains the definitive comprehensive work on Borderline Personality Disorder and on Narcissistic pathology.
Early in his text, Dr. Kernberg summarizes the salient contributions to his evolving understanding of personality development, made by prior leading pioneers: Anna Freud (on the understanding of defense mechanisms, their essential hierarchical ordering, from primitive to most mature, based on their order of appearance in the developing child), Melanie Klein (on the origin and the nature of the infantile oral aggression which is the fundamental disturbance from which spring the hallmark symptoms of splitting, idealization, overvaluation, and their vicissitudes), Helene Deutsch (on the concept of the "as if" personality, which beautifully explains the nature of the identity disturbance and emptiness of the BPD).
He follows his literature review with what I believe is the best chapter (and one whose reading alone makes owning this book worthwhile) "The Syndrome". Here is found perhaps his greatest contribution into the elucidation of the condition (the seeds of which he gives credit to Dr. Karl Menninger): the idea of mental illness as a unitary process, and personality pathology as organized on a dimensional continuum. In this conceptualization, an understanding of BPD emerges which allows the reader to break through (what was for me) the confusing DSM IV catalogue defining the disorder as a many-headed hydra of pathological symptoms and behaviors: BPD is unstable affects--anger, rage, dysphoria, anxiety. It is emptiness, lack of identity. It is also impulsivity, promiscuity, eating disorder symptoms, substance abuse, self-injury, suicidal acts. Wait...it is also unstable relationships--frantic efforts, devaluation, idealization! Reading this chapter of Dr. Kernberg's book finally gave me a clear basis for understanding each of the DSM IV criteria, how they interrelate, how they arise within the psyche, and how the presence and severity of each, and their unique combination in each patient predicts her/his prognosis, and guides treatment.
Kernberg's great contribution is that Borderline Personality is not a separate and discrete entity. It is in fact better understood as a spectrum of "Borderline Conditions" which is then to be understood as a unique dimension of personality pathology. This dimension is in turn superimposable on a second continuum consisting of many other personality disorders. The latter in turn are ordered from the "lowest" and most severe, characterized by the most primitive defenses: Narcissistic, (containing Paranoid and Antisocial subtypes), Infantile (with Dependent subtypes), and finally Hysterical, Depressive/Masochistic, and Obsessive personalities, which utilize "higher level" defenses(Reaction Formation, Identification with the Aggressor).(Those in this last group in particular however, may be rendered much sicker if colored by severe forms of the Borderline Conditions).
The elucidation of this theory may well appear arcane and esoteric. The clinician may be tempted to dismiss it as an academic exercise with little salience to the modern treatment of Borderline and other severe personality disorders, and return to his much more user-friendly DBT manual! If he hangs in however, and forges through more of this book the reader will find that the remaining chapters are much easier to understand, once the first two sink in, and confer much wisdom into the treatment of BPD, and of the other serious personality constellations that it so often colors and coexists with, one of which, the Narcissistic constellation, receives comprehensive attention in the second half of the book.
I can touch on just a few treatment pearls that are presented:
1. How to determine capacity for intensive work thus decide if psychodynamic vs. supportive therapy is indicated; and on length of therapy and session frequency(e.g. level of anxiety tolerance, presence of the capacity for depression and guilt (indicative of more developed superego and better prognosis).
2. The potential pitfalls in therapy (transference and counter-transference based)and how to avoid them: patient idealization or devaluation of the therapist, splitting by patient of her negative states after acting out within them (rendering them unavailable to work with in therapy), therapist masochistic submission to patient's aggression (taking calls at all hours, responding to serial spurious "crises"), a sense of therapist's impotence, and/or exaggerated fear of criticism by third parties (leading to therapist fear & aggression: retaliating to patient's threats of suicide with punitive involuntary hospitalization, or with countertherapeutic "contracts" whereby the patient is given rigid conditions for ejection from therapy).
I hope my review influences the reader who may, like myself, (in real life) have little opportunity to practice Dr. Kernberg's recommended many years of weekly psychotherapy,to dive into this book nevertheless; he will emerge with much more wisdom, understanding, and empathy for many of his sickest patients.

The Expert at the Card Table: The Classic Treatise on Card Manipulation (Dover Magic Books), by S. W. Erdnase

"The Expert at the Card Table is the most famous, the most carefully studied book ever published on the art of manipulating cards at gaming tables." —from the Foreword by Martin Gardner.
For almost a century, this book has been considered indispensable to attaining the highest level of card mastery. In it, S. W. Erdnase, a supreme master of card manipulation, teaches card enthusiasts how to perform the dazzling tricks and sleights — many of them his own creations — that made him famous.
The first section of the book deals with card table artifice, or, to put it more bluntly, cheating at cards. Step by step, Mr. Erdnase demonstrates his own systems of false shuffling, false riffling and cutting, dealing from the bottom, and such slick moves as palming cards, "skinning the hand" — even three-card monte.
The second section covers legerdemain: the art of forcing a card, one- and two-hand transformations, the devious "slide" and more. Card handlers will love Erdnase's selection of dazzling card tricks, including The Acrobatic Jacks, The Exclusive Coterie, The Divining Rod, The Invisible Flights, A Mind Reading Trick, and many others.
In an informative Foreword to this edition, Martin Gardner relates the unhappy details of the author's personal life, and recounts the history of this famous book, whose methods, Mr. Gardner asserts, "are as useful today by magicians and card hustlers as they were in 1902. This book is still the bible of card 'mechanics,' and as much a delight to read as it was in the early years of this century."

I was completely satisfied. The best quote of the book is found ...
By Don the Baptist
A Review by Don the Baptist of the text – The Expert at the Card Table – by S. W. Erdnase.

With so much literal trash on the market today, pleasingly, this text, The Expert at the Card Table by S. W. Erdnase, seems to actually deliver what was promised.

While I am no expert at cards and have no desire to become one, this work offers 130 pages of instructions on how one might gain the “advantage” (cheat) at the card table. Beyond this, roughly half the text is directed toward card tricks and sleights of hand intended to impress others without the goal of bilking the simple.

To gain a few simple card tricks was my reason for purchasing this book, and thus, I was completely satisfied.

The best quote of the book is found on page 59, “Many hours of incessant practice must be spent to acquire the requisite amount of skill; but it must be remembered if feats at card-handling could be attained for the asking there would be little in such performance to interest or profit any one.”

Therefore, do not expect any of this to come easily.

Great condition and an amazing book!
By Deviantidol
The Expert at the Card Table - Classic Treatise on Card Manipulation by S.W. Erdnase - has been hailed at the Bible for Close-up Card Magicians and Gamblers alike. For the longest time I was strictly using The Royal Road to Card Magic DVD Set taught by R. Paul Wilson, along with the book Expert Card Technique. Both of those were great learning tools, but I was very exciting when I purchased a Hardcover copy of Expert at the Card Table for a reasonable price. The book has a nice medium, dark wooden color to it with just regular black letters for the title of the book. My copy has a scratch down the back, but it isn't noticeable while looking at it, only when you run your hand down the back of the book.

Now even though a majority of these sleights and some effects are out-dated, but if it were not for these specific sleights and card routines, then we wouldn't have nearly as many creative Magicians who really pour their heart and soul into their work. Which is the exact same feeling that I get whenever I am reading Expert at the Card Table, and there have been a few occasions when the author refers to himself as "we" so it could very well be more than just one person writing such a revolutionary book on cards. So I highly suggest any Magicians, Gambler or just the curious to pick up a copy because you're bound to find a sleight/trick/etc that will fit your own personal routine, perfectly.

THE classic of card magic
By Jeremy
What can you say about this book that hasn't been said 100 times before? In just 130 short pages (under half of which are specifically devoted to magic), S. W. Erdnase redefined card magic. I am very much an amateur, but am familiar enough to recognize nearly everything in the book, including some entire routines (Ricky Jay, for instance, does a version of "The Exclusive Coterie" in which he recites the pages-long patter from this book word for word). Further starting to practice some of the many moves presented in the book has revealed their beauty and potential.

The book is divided into two sections, "Card table artifice", dealing with cheating at draw poker (false shuffles, false cuts, bottom dealing, palming, etc.) , and "Legerdemain", dealing with card magic. The entire book is written in a very engaging and amusing style, and although describing complex hand movements in words is notoriously difficult, it is fairly easy to follow the instructions for the various moves described, with the aid of the provided drawings. And the moves are many. A performer could easily make a career strictly by mastering the slights contained in this gem.

It is hard to pick favorites from everything described in this book, but I wanted to try. The "Mexican Three Card Monte" move is one of my favorites, because it is so simple (you can master it in about 5 minutes), yet looks so smooth and is very hard to detect. Probably overall, my favorite move I have ever seen is described in this book -- the "Diagonal Palm-Shift". It is hard to put into words how elegant this move is; when I first saw a video clip of Dai Vernon performing it, I rewatched the same 5 seconds about 20 times in a row, because it is so amazing and unbelievable to see.

Anyway, this book is a classic, and remains useful today, more than 100 years after its publication. It is great. Really great.

Quick Primer for Batman V Superman
By JoBrAd
I enjoyed this little early trip into the newly expanding DC Extended Universe. Before I start, I should mention, if it's not obvious, that this is a short book geared towards kids and that you shouldn't go into this expecting a novel geared towards adults. That being said, the book does a good job at not talking down to the reader or relying on sophomoric situations like so many books and shows targeted at children do. Cross Fire gives us a story set very shortly after Man of Steel that manages to involve both Batman and Superman but without having them actually cross paths thereby saving that for the actual movie. Overall it was a nice quick read and fun primer for the upcoming feature. The best parts of the book were the little character pieces such as conversations between Bruce and Alfred as well Lois and Clark and hopefully the same relationship dynamics are part of Batman v Superman.

Not my Batman but it sure was my Superman
By Brooks Langford
This book was fine. It did a good job of making Superman, well Superman a thing that the movie Man of Steel seemed to struggle with. Batman was lame in this book. Bruce Wayne was very enjoyable and some of his conversations with Alfred are the greatest moments in the whole book but every scene with Batman fighting is lame. He seems so useless. They try and set up a cool situation and I understand that they can't go full "Batman" in a kids book but come on he could have easily taken down the end threat in like 5 seconds if it was any other version of Batman.

Good for a quick read
By Danny Milian
The plot is not that good, does not go with the tone of the movie, feels like a story for children.

School of Hard Knocks
By Odie
As with other Chilton books, this one is well written. An amateur may be able to follow the instructions as written but without some practical experience gained from the "school of hard knocks," he or she may get confused. For example, the Vector Carburetor tends to warp causing fuel leakage. This is something the average person working on their own equipment probably won't know until they expend a lot of time and money. Still, with supervision or even trial and error this book is definitely an asset.

chapter 1

Joe Abercrombie

Joe Abercrombie is one of the fastest-rising stars in fantasy today, acclaimed by readers and critics alike for his tough, spare, no-nonsense approach to the genre. He’s probably best known for his First Law trilogy, the first novel of which, The Blade Itself, was published in 2006; it was followed in subsequent years by Before They Are Hanged and Last Argument of Kings. He’s also written the stand-alone fantasy novels Best Served Cold and The Heroes. His most recent novel is Red Country. In addition to writing, Abercrombie is also a freelance film editor, and lives and works in London.

In the fast-paced thriller that follows, he takes us deep into the dirty, rank, melodious, and mazelike streets of Sipani, one of the world’s most dangerous cities, for a deadly game of Button, Button, Who’s Got the Button?

Tough Times All Over

Joe Abercrombie

Damn, but she hated Sipani.

The bloody blinding fogs and the bloody slapping water and the bloody universal sickening stink of rot. The bloody parties and masques and revels. Fun, everyone having bloody fun, or at least pretending to. The bloody people were worst of all. Rogues every man, woman, and child. Liars and fools, the lot of them.

Carcolf hated Sipani. Yet here she was again. Who, then, she was forced to wonder, was the fool?

Braying laughter echoed from the mist ahead and she slipped into the shadows of a doorway, one hand tickling the grip of her sword. A good courier trusts no one, and Carcolf was the very best, but in Sipani, she trusted . . . less than no one.

Another gang of pleasure-seekers blundered from the murk, a man with a mask like a moon pointing at a woman who was so drunk she kept falling over on her high shoes. All of them laughing, one of them flapping his lace cuffs as though there never was a thing so funny as drinking so much you couldn’t stand up. Carcolf rolled her eyes skyward and consoled herself with the thought that behind the masks they were hating it as much as she always did when she tried to have fun.

In the solitude of her doorway, Carcolf winced. Damn, but she needed a holiday. She was becoming a sour ass. Or, indeed, had become one and was getting worse. One of those people who held the entire world in contempt. Was she turning into her bloody father?

“Anything but that,” she muttered.

The moment the revelers tottered off into the night, she ducked from her doorway and pressed on, neither too fast nor too slow, soft bootheels silent on the dewy cobbles, her unexceptional hood drawn down to an inconspicuous degree, the very image of a person with just the average amount to hide. Which, in Sipani, was quite a bit.

Over to the west somewhere, her armored carriage would be speeding down the wide lanes, wheels striking sparks as they clattered over the bridges, stunned bystanders leaping aside, driver’s whip lashing at the foaming flanks of the horses, the dozen hired guards thundering after, streetlamps gleaming upon their dewy armor. Unless the Quarryman’s people had already made their move, of course: the flutter of arrows, the scream of beasts and men, the crash of the wagon leaving the road, the clash of steel, and finally the great padlock blown from the strongbox with blasting powder, the choking smoke wafted aside by eager hands, and the lid flung back to reveal . . . nothing.

Carcolf allowed herself the smallest smile and patted the lump against her ribs. The item, stitched up safe in the lining of her coat.

She gathered herself, took a couple of steps, and sprang from the canal side, clearing three strides of oily water to the deck of a decaying barge, timbers creaking under her as she rolled and came smoothly up. To go around by the Fintine bridge was quite the detour, not to mention a well-traveled and well-watched way, but this boat was always tied here in the shadows, offering a shortcut. She had made sure of it. Carcolf left as little to chance as possible. In her experience, chance could be a real bastard.

A wizened face peered out from the gloom of the cabin, steam issuing from a battered kettle. “Who the hell are you?”

“Nobody.” Carcolf gave a cheery salute. “Just passing through!” and she hopped from the rocking wood to the stones on the far side of the canal and was away into the mold-smelling mist. Just passing through. Straight to the docks to catch the tide and off on her merry way. Or her sour-assed one, at least. Wherever Carcolf went, she was nobody. Everywhere, always passing through.

Over to the east, that idiot Pombrine would be riding hard in the company of four paid retainers. He hardly looked much like her, what with the moustache and all, but swaddled in that ever-so-conspicuous embroidered cloak of hers, he did well enough for a double. He was a penniless pimp who smugly believed himself to be impersonating her so she could visit a lover, a lady of means who did not want their tryst made public. Carcolf sighed. If only. She consoled herself with the thought of Pombrine’s shock when those bastards Deep and Shallow shot him from his saddle, expressed considerable surprise at the moustache, then rooted through his clothes with increasing frustration, and finally, no doubt, gutted his corpse only to find . . . nothing.

Carcolf patted that lump once again and pressed on with a spring in her step. Here went she, down the middle course, alone and on foot, along a carefully prepared route of back streets, of narrow ways, of unregarded shortcuts and forgotten stairs, through crumbling palaces and rotting tenements, gates left open by surreptitious arrangement and, later on, a short stretch of sewer that would bring her out right by the docks with an hour or two to spare.

After this job, she really had to take a holiday. She tongued at the inside of her lip, where a small but unreasonably painful ulcer had lately developed. All she did was work. A trip to Adua, maybe? Visit her brother, see her nieces? How old would they be now? Ugh. No. She remembered what a judgmental bitch her sister-in-law was. One of those people who met everything with a sneer. She reminded Carcolf of her father. Probably why her brother had married the bloody woman . . .

Music was drifting from somewhere as she ducked beneath a flaking archway. A violinist, either tuning up or of execrable quality. Neither would have surprised her. Papers flapped and rustled upon a wall sprouting with moss, ill-printed bills exhorting the faithful citizenry to rise up against the tyranny of the Snake of Talins. Carcolf snorted. Most of Sipani’s citizens were more interested in falling over than rising up, and the rest were anything but faithful.

She twisted about to tug at the seat of her trousers, but it was hopeless. How much do you have to pay for a new suit of clothes before you avoid a chafing seam just in the worst place? She hopped along a narrow way beside a stagnant section of canal, long out of use, gloopy with algae and bobbing rubbish, plucking the offending fabric this way and that to no effect. Damn this fashion for tight trousers! Perhaps it was some kind of cosmic punishment for her paying the tailor with forged coins. But then Carcolf was considerably more moved by the concept of local profit than that of cosmic punishment, and therefore strove to avoid paying for anything wherever possible. It was practically a principle with her, and her father always said that a person should stick to their principles—

Bloody hell, she really was turning into her father.

“Ha!”

A ragged figure sprang from an archway, the faintest glimmer of steel showing. With an instinctive whimper, Carcolf stumbled back, fumbling her coat aside and drawing her own blade, sure that death had found her at last. The Quarryman one step ahead? Or was it Deep and Shallow, or Kurrikan’s hirelings . . . but no one else showed themselves. Only this one man, swathed in a stained cloak, unkempt hair stuck to pale skin by the damp, a mildewed scarf masking the bottom part of his face, bloodshot eyes round and scared above.

“Stand and deliver!” he boomed, somewhat muffled by the scarf.

Carcolf raised her brows. “Who even says that?”

A slight pause, while the rotten waters slapped the stones beside them. “You’re a woman?” There was an almost apologetic turn to the would-be robber’s voice.

“If I am, will you not rob me?”

“Well . . . er . . .” The thief seemed to deflate somewhat, then drew himself up again. “Stand and deliver anyway!”

“Why?” asked Carcolf.

The point of the robber’s sword drifted uncertainly. “Because I have a considerable debt to . . . that’s none of your business!”

“No, I mean, why not just stab me and strip my corpse of valuables, rather than giving me the warning?”

Another pause. “I suppose . . . I hope to avoid violence? But I warn you I am entirely prepared for it!”

He was a bloody civilian. A mugger who had blundered upon her. A random encounter. Talk about chance being a bastard! For him, at least. “You, sir,” she said, “are a shitty thief.”

“I, madam, am a gentleman.”

“You, sir, are a dead gentleman.” Carcolf stepped forward, weighing her blade, a stride length of razor steel lent a ruthless gleam from a lamp in a window somewhere above. She could never be bothered to practice, but nonetheless she was far more than passable with a sword. It would take a great deal more than this stick of gutter trash to get the better of her. “I will carve you like—”

The man darted forward with astonishing speed, there was a scrape of steel, and before Carcolf even thought of moving, the sword was twitched from her fingers and skittered across the greasy cobbles to plop into the canal.

“Ah,” she said. That changed things. Plainly her attacker was not the bumpkin he appeared to be, at least when it came to swordplay. She should have known. Nothing in Sipani is ever quite as it appears.

“Hand over the money,” he said.

“Delighted.” Carcolf plucked out her purse and tossed it against the wall, hoping to slip past while he was distracted. Alas, he pricked it from the air with impressive dexterity and whisked his sword point back to prevent her escape. It tapped gently at the lump in her coat.

“What have you got . . . just there?”

From bad to much, much worse. “Nothing, nothing at all.” Carcolf attempted to pass it off with a false chuckle, but that ship had sailed and she, sadly, was not aboard, any more than she was aboard the damn ship still rocking at the wharf for the voyage to Thond. She steered the glinting point away with one finger. “Now I have an extremely pressing engagement, so if—” There was a faint hiss as the sword slit her coat open.

Carcolf blinked. “Ow.” There was a burning pain down her ribs. The sword had slit her open too. “Ow!” She subsided to her knees, deeply aggrieved, blood oozing between her fingers as she clutched them to her side.

“Oh . . . oh no. Sorry. I really . . . really didn’t mean to cut you. Just wanted, you know . . .”

“Ow.” The item, now slightly smeared with Carcolf’s blood, dropped from the gashed pocket and tumbled across the cobbles. A slender package perhaps a foot long, wrapped in stained leather.

“I need a surgeon,” gasped Carcolf, in her best I-am-a-helpless-woman voice. The Grand Duchess had always accused her of being overdramatic, but if you can’t be dramatic at a time like that, when can you? It was likely she really did need a surgeon, after all, and there was a chance that the robber would lean down to help her and she could stab the bastard in the face with her knife. “Please, I beg you!”

He loitered, eyes wide, the whole thing plainly gone further than he had intended. But he edged closer only to reach for the package, the glinting point of his sword still leveled at her.

A different and even more desperate tack, then. She strove to keep the panic out of her voice. “Look, take the money, I wish you joy of it.” Carcolf did not, in fact, wish him joy, she wished him rotten in his grave. “But we will both be far better off if you leave that package!”

His hand hovered. “Why, what’s in it?”

“I don’t know. I’m under orders not to open it!”

“Orders from who?”

Carcolf winced. “I don’t know that either, but—”

Kurtis took the packet. Of course he did. He was an idiot, but not so much of an idiot as that. He snatched up the packet and ran. Of course he ran. When didn’t he?

He tore down the alleyway, heart in mouth, jumped a burst barrel, caught his foot and went sprawling, almost impaled himself on his own drawn sword, slithered on his face through a slick of rubbish, scooping a mouthful of something faintly sweet and staggering up, spitting and cursing, snatching a scared glance over his shoulder—

There was no sign of pursuit. Only the mist, the endless mist, whipping and curling like a thing alive.

He slipped the packet, now somewhat slimy, into his ragged cloak and limped on, clutching at his bruised buttock and still struggling to spit that rotten-sweet taste from his mouth. Not that it was any worse than his breakfast had been. Better, if anything. You know a man by his breakfast, his fencing master always used to tell him.

He pulled up his damp hood with its faint smell of onions and despair, plucked the purse from his sword, and slid blade back into sheath as he slipped from the alley and insinuated himself among the crowds, that faint snap of hilt meeting clasp bringing back so many memories. Of training and tournaments, of bright futures and the adulation of the crowds. Fencing, my boy, that’s the way to advance! Such knowledgeable audiences in Styria, they love their swordsmen there, you’ll make a fortune! Better times, when he had not dressed in rags, or been thankful for the butcher’s leftovers, or robbed people for a living. He grimaced. Robbed women. If you could call it a living. He stole another furtive glance over his shoulder. Could he have killed her? His skin prickled with horror. Just a scratch. Just a scratch, surely? But he had seen blood. Please, let it have been a scratch! He rubbed his face as though he could rub the memory away, but it was stuck fast. One by one, things he had never imagined, then told himself he would never do, then that he would never do again, had become his daily routine.

Targaryen History
By jsoul6208
I purchased this story collection solely for the Song of Ice and Fire short story "The Rogue Prince, or, A King's Brother" (George Martin), along with the "Dangerous Women" short story collection, which includes the ASOIAF short story "The Princess and the Queen." These two stories go together, so I recommend purchasing both books. Both of these short stories are essential reading for extreme ASOIAF fans, especially since we are currently between seasons and books. Like the "Dunk and Egg" short stories, these two short stories explore Targaryen history. I preferred "The Princess and the Queen," which contained much more action, while "The Rogue Prince" was more focused on character development. The story of "The Rogue Prince" takes place before that of "The Princess and the Queen," but I would recommend reading "The Princess" first -- in "The Princess" you get an exciting story, and then in "Rogue" we find out why the characters behaved the way that they did in "Princess." They can be read in either order, though.

I have not read the other stories in this collection, but I did notice that it also contains a story from the world of the Kingkiller Chronicles (Rothfuss), which I will need to read as I wait for the third book in that series!

Cost me $120, with no regrets.
By Michael Trick
I bought the book for the Scott Lynch (Lies of Loch Lamora) story, which was wonderful, but the other stories introduced me to a whole slew of characters whose authors write of scams, misdirection, and "not everything seems as it appears". Most stories slant towards the science fiction/fantasy side, but not all: there are rogues everywhere. I ended up buying the first book of perhaps a dozen series based on the creativity in the short stories. Turned out to be an expensive purchase (for the irony impaired: not for the book itself but for the followup purchases) that has added to my "to be read" pile immensely. Which is I guess why authors put their stories in collections like this. A great introduction to a wide range of creative authors and interesting characters.

Well worth the money
By Caroline L.
I'm a fan of several of the authors in this anthology: Garth Nix, Neil Gaiman, Patrick Rothfuss, and George RR Martin. I've been waiting for as long as Patrick Rothfuss told his fans that he had a story about Bast.

That's what I read first. It was beautifully done, and it was a perfect story about Bast. I am now content to wait for his novella on Auri and the Underthing The Slow Regard of Silent Things coming out this fall.

I read George RR Martin's story about the older Targaryens. It was good, and it was more hasty than his novels. That meant that it moved at a practically breakneck speed for him, and it was easier to keep track of than his deep games. I liked it a lot.

I then read Garth Nix's nonsense stories about godlets, and it was charming and adorable ESPECIALLY because there's a tiny elephant named Rosie who is a major character. Somehow, he sets up an entire world in a brief space. Lovely. It was a good story before his recent release of Clariel: The Lost Abhorsen.

The last that I read (of course I'm going to read the entirety of the anthology now that I've seen the quality) was Neil Gaiman's on the Marquis de Carabas. It tells you almost nothing, but it pulled me back into the world of Neverwhere: A Novel. It was nice.

This book is well worth the money.
