Trying to get rich fast is dangerous because we have to gamble on the short-term price direction of some stock or other asset. There are a huge number of people trying to do the same thing, many of whom are much better informed than we are. The short-term price direction of any security or derivative contract is subject to all kinds of wild price swings due to events that have nothing to do with the actual long-term value of the underlying business or asset. Last but not least, there is the problem of leverage: to get rich quickly, one often has to use leverage/debt to amplify small price swings into really huge gains. If things go against us, they can also turn into really large losses. So we take a leveraged position in a stock, thinking we are going to hit it big; then something terrible like 9/11 happens, the stock market tanks, and we get wiped out. In his early days, Charlie did use a lot of leverage on his stock arbitrage investments, but as he got older he saw the grave danger he was putting himself in and now passionately avoids using debt and bets only on the long-term economics of a business, not the short-term price swings of its stock price.

What would Charlie Munger do?

If you collect quotations from one of the broadest thinkers in business who for decades has delivered witty and wise sayings, you cannot really go wrong. The Tao translates as “the way” or “the path” and what we are served here is the way of Charlie Munger, vice Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway and long business partner to Warren Buffett. Munger’s many sayings have over time gained enough status to be christened as “Mungerisms.”

The reference to Taoism is equally apt when it comes to the format of the book. Just as Lao-tzu, the Taoist collection of saying and proverbs, this is a commented assortment of quotations where David Clark, co-writer of the many Buffettology books does the observing and deciphering of the wise musings of the old master. Buffett obviously has a wonderful way with words but I have always enjoyed Munger’s shorter, sharper and more cynical statements more and Clark has done us all a huge service collecting these quotes. It is a book possible to read in one, albeit long, sitting – but please don’t. Take the time to scribble down how Munger’s thoughts reflect on your investments, business and being. Does this make sense to you? If so, how are you living up to it? What can you change? What can you improve?

The selected quotations are grouped into four parts covering investing, banking and the economy, business and philosophizing on life at large. Sections one and three are delivered with authority and Ben Graham’s saying that investing is the most intelligent when it is most businesslike springs to mind. At the same time the investing of Munger and Berkshire Hathaway is hardly unknown material due to the vast coverage of Buffett’s investing success.

The danger with adding commentary is that it isn’t always better to say something in a lengthier format when it has already been delivered crisp and clear in a short pitchy way. There is a balance to be kept to not over-explain things. Clark is mostly on the right side of the tracks but he delivers rather similar explanations to many of the quotes and is forced to add quite a few “as we have said earlier”.

Further, just as it comes to later commentary of, say old Taoist texts, it is always possible to debate if the interpretation of the original scriptures from one specific scholar is optimal. Occasionally I would have chosen to make alternative reflections. I think the selection of quotes Clark has made is a good one. Perhaps it could have hade been tilted a tad more towards psychology given Munger’s wisdom in the area. There are few real gems missing apart from this favorite on investing “It’s not supposed to be easy. Anyone who finds it easy is stupid.” – a typical Mungerism in it’s lack of flattery.

The second part of the book is the least interesting - but every time one hears figures about the gross exposure of global derivatives one marvels. The best and most inspiring part is the fourth, on Life, Education and the Pursuit of Happiness. Below are some of our favorites. “Being rational is a moral imperative. You should never be stupider than you need to be”; “Spend each day trying to be a little wiser than you were when you woke up. Discharge your duties faithfully and well. Slug it out one inch at a time, day by day. At the end of the day – if you live long enough – most people get what they deserve” and especially close to our heart “In my whole life, I have known no wise people who didn’t read all the time – none, zero. You’d be amazed at how much Warren reads – and how much I read. My children laugh at me. They think I’m a book with a couple of legs sticking out.” Amen. If you ever find yourself hesitating over a decision, simply ask yourself “What would Charlie Munger do?”

Unlikable main character

One Word: atypical

Cody, reeling from the suicide of her childhood best friend, sets out to learn how the young woman she thought she knew could have done something so out of character.

Gayle Forman gave narrator Cody a sarcastic, angry voice that made rooting for her difficult. She was self centered, often caring only about her loss and pain. I could understand her guardedness, but do often people reached out and tried to befriend and help Cody and she responded with lies and unkindness. I don't think the trope of a **young person in pain, pushing people away yet they keep trying' despite their own agony ** is a realistic one, yet I see it often in YA lit. Perhaps having the loving support of others to break down the wall makes for good drama. The minor characters all had distinct personalities.

The plot of Cody searching for answers in a pro-suicide support group was unique. I had heard about such groups on a Law&Order: SVU episode, but when I searched the Internet to see if such websites actually exist, I found nothing. Foreman wrote Megan's character based on a real girl who used such a site to kill herself, so maybe this was an isolated case or such websites have been shut down. It's horrible to think of something like this existing, when depressed people need to be steered toward medical/therapeutic support.

I like Foreman's use of voice and very readable prose. Even when I don't like characters, she does a great job creating multidimensional people who we've all encountered, despite Cody feeling somewhat cliché.

Not as good as the rest of Forman's books, slightly disappointed.

I tend to not read Contemporary YA. I'm not sure why, because when I do, I devour it. Maybe that's why I don't? Maybe because I think I read them to quickly. Doesn't matter.

I was pretty excited for "I Was Here" after I adored her If I Stay Duology (I still haven't watched the movie, btw) last year, I knew I would pre-order anything by her in the future--and I did just that. I received this book in the mail the day after it was released, and I started it a few days later because I was finishing up another book.

I knew it was going to be sad--I mean, even the synopsis is kind of sad. I mean, we open at a teen's (I think she's a teen, all we know is she is under 21 maybe?) explanation of attending her best friend's funeral and various prayer services. So that should be sad, right? But I didn't feel sadness. I didn't feel sympathy for the main character--and it's not like I was just removed from the action of the entire book, I felt for Meg's parents, and Meg's little brother (his portions were probably the most emotionally connected I felt throughout the entire book). But I just didn't care about Cody. Most of the time I found her to be unnecessarily keeping secrets and then whining because no one else knows what's going on.

The introduction of Ben McAllister, and his connection with Meg, and that Cody seeks him out, was a great point and a realistic aspect of the story. I feel like if my best friend killed herself, I would absolutely seek out the last person that she contacted. So, I really liked this plot point, and I liked Ben a lot as a character. He was probably the most realistic responses to the obsession that Cody develops with finding out more details of Meg's suicide.

Overall, I gave this book 3/5 STARS--I don't know what was missing exactly, just that I wasn't blown away. It didn't even give me the emotional rawness, and good cry that Forman's other books have.

Mixed Feelings

Let me first say that I am an avid fan of Ms. Forman. I have used her novels If I Stay and Where She Went in my eighth grade class and the students adore her descriptive writing and ability to pull you into the story and characters.

That being said, I was a bit disappointed in this book. The main character, Cody, was very well described and the story had substance. I also was impressed with the way Ms. Forman tackled the subject of suicide. However, I am disappointed because most of the story dragged. It told the story of Cody but didn't give much insight into the true Meg. I wouldn't use this story with my class, not because of a rough story, but trying to analyze and evaluate a mediocre storyline and plot. Also, I would caution teachers against using this in class because it may give students ideas.

It is an okay read. I will continue reading books by Ms. Forman. This just didn't really cut it for me.

About the Author
Thomas J. Gardner is a proven author and widely respected practicing attorney with more than fifty years of experience, including several years as an assistant district attorney in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Mr. Gardner received his law degree from Marquette Law School.

Terry M. Anderson is Professor of Law at Creighton University School of Law. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1968 and Juris Doctor degree in 1971 from the University of North Dakota, where he was a member of the Order of the Coif and Case Editor of the North Dakota Law Review. After earning a Master of Laws degree from Harvard Law School in 1972, he joined the Creighton law faculty. He has been a visiting Professor at the University of New Mexico School of Law, and the Denver University School of Law. He teaches Criminal Law, Contracts, and Secured Transactions in Personal Property.

Great introductory book for anyone interested in Criminal Law and Law in general.

A very informative, and thought provoking book. I especially like the critical thinking questions at the end of each chapter. I thought reading Supreme Court Cases would be the barest and driest torture ever imagined. But I am happy to say that, through this book, reading and understanding law and how it applies to society has proven to be an exciting venture. I recommend this book first and foremost to the college student interested and/or participating in a criminal law class. But I also recommend this book to individuals who are interested by law and how it applies and relates to society, and in this case the criminal justice system.

Several years after the Arab Spring began, democracy remains elusive in the Middle East. The Arab Spring that resides in the popular imagination is one in which a wave of mass mobilization swept the broader Middle East, toppled dictators, and cleared the way for democracy. The reality is that few Arab countries have experienced anything of the sort. While Tunisia made progress towards some type of constitutionally entrenched participatory rule, the other countries that overthrew their rulers-Egypt, Yemen, and Libya-remain mired in authoritarianism and instability. Elsewhere in the Arab world uprisings were suppressed, subsided or never materialized.

The Arab Spring's modest harvest cries out for explanation. Why did regime change take place in only four Arab countries and why has democratic change proved so elusive in the countries that made attempts? This book attempts to answer those questions. First, by accounting for the full range of variance: from the absence or failure of uprisings in such places as Algeria and Saudi Arabia at one end to Tunisia's rocky but hopeful transition at the other. Second, by examining the deep historical and structure variables that determined the balance of power between incumbents and opposition.

Brownlee, Masoud, and Reynolds find that the success of domestic uprisings depended on the absence of a hereditary executive and a dearth of oil rents. Structural factors also cast a shadow over the transition process. Even when opposition forces toppled dictators, prior levels of socioeconomic development and state strength shaped whether nascent democracy, resurgent authoritarianism, or unbridled civil war would follow.

Jason Brownlee is an associate professor of Government and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, where he teaches courses on US foreign politics, Middle Eastern politics, and authoritarianism.

Tarek Masoud is an associate professor of public policy at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government, where he teaches courses on comparative political institutions, democratization, and Middle Eastern politics.

Andrew Reynolds is an Associate Professor of Political Science at UNC Chapel Hill and the Chair of Global Studies. He received his M.A. from the University of Cape Town and his Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego. His research and teaching focus on democratization, constitutional design and electoral politics. He is particularly interested in the presence and impact of minorities and marginalized communities.

It won't open on my computer or my kindle (I have a 3 or 4 year old kindle, I suppose it would probably work on the Kindle Fire) and yet I can't return it. A complete waste of money.

Good Introduction to Cross Cultural Situations

This is a good basic introduction to cross cultural communication for the novice. If you have lived in a foreign culture for 5 or more years like I have, however, you might want to look for something more in depth. But if you are be beginner, and want to know how to get along with someone from a foreign culture for business or pleasure, by all means get this book.

I found Storti's approach extremely useful. I'm a clinical psychologist (and a ATCK) and I found interesting how he used psychological tips without falling into psych terms. Storti's approach is clear and interesting in the sense that you can build other perspectives into what he says. I definitely recommend reading the book to anyone who is exposed to a cross-cultural situation.

What did I not like? Book citations... as with many other intercultural sources the authors go back to years people from my age (37) find not that easy to relate to.

Art of Crossing cultures

This book is very useful for the working ESL teacher. We have about 50% Chinese students in our classrooms at the university of Kansas. The anecdotes and examples in the book enlighten us about the more subtle behaviors of the Chinese culture in terms of learning style. The educational programs in China are very much "writing" based. The students also "memorize" as a learning tool. Therefore, getting them to speak out in class, converse in small groups is often quite difficult. Craig Storti has "Been there done that", so I appreciated his sharing with me.
