Good idea, but lacks consistency and balance (also, still annoyingly snobbish)

I flipped through the first edition many years ago, and had a good laugh at how many expensive hotels and restaurants were counted among the 1000 places. In the second edition, Schultz has attempted to rectify this problem by merging many of these places into a single city or region. However, the merging is not done consistently. Some cities, such as London and New York, are now listed as only one item in Schultz's list, with individual landmarks and sites listed within each entry. Other cities, however, are still spread out over multiple entries, like in the first book. For example, Dublin covers 3 entries (Edible, Historical, and Literary Dublin), and Shanghai covers 2 entries (The Bund and the Shanghai Museum). Milan covers 4. Some countries are also organized in the wrong section - Greece and Cyprus are in the Western Europe part of the book, between Germany and Italy.

The other problem with the book is the lack of balance in covering the different regions of the world. The back cover informs the reader that 28 new countries have been added compared to the first edition, which is an improvement, but some regions are still very much over/under-represented relative to others. Britain and Ireland (0.2% of the world's land area and 1% of the world population) together take up 74 entries in the book. In comparison, India and China, which are much larger countries with greater geographical diversity, longer history, and far more UNESCO world heritage sites, only get 40 entries in the book - combined. I'm sure that all of the places recommended in the book for Britain and Ireland are wonderful places worthy of visit, but when making a list that's supposed to cover the entire world, the author needs to pay special attention to fairly representing every country and region of the world.

Finally, the snobbishness is still present in spades. Schultz continues to consistently recommend the most expensive hotels and restaurants in practically every part of the world. The entry for Istanbul (which is covered quite well, actually) lists 7 options for places to stay. The second-cheapest one runs at a cool $385. If I had to choose 7 accommodation options for a large city, I would probably suggest at least 2 upscale options, 2 mid-level (which I define as $100-250), and 2 budget options. I don't need a travel book to tell me that the most expensive hotel in town is probably a nice place to spend the night. With her apparent motto of "the more expensive the better" I should expect Outer Space to be one of the entries in the next edition of this book, what with its $100 million price tag. On the other hand, there's no Four Seasons or Park Hyatt hotel there, so maybe not.

This book is useful for travel ideas, and makes for an entertaining read about places you might not have heard of. But unfortunately, it often feels like an amateurish copy+paste job.

Trivia note: I counted that there are actually 1012 places in the book.

What a disappointment. A paltry few pages of summary

I started reading this last night on my Kindle because I wanted to read up on Malta. We plan on a trip to Malta in January. What a disappointment. A paltry few pages of summary. History was superficial - no interesting highligts, walking tips. I flipped through to Poland and to Krakow, where we live. Holy molly, this author recommends a restaurant near the Wawel castle that is a tourist trap. And the chapter on Poland starts with Auschwitz. If I were planning a trip to Poland and read that section first, I would quit right there. As I flipped through the rest of the book, I realized this is a book for people who have never travelled and not for a seasoned traveller. I appreciate the research and time it takes to write a book like this but .... it is just another travel book with restaurants, hotels and a few pages about the place which you can get from any google on the internet. Nothing special here other than the fact that its about a 'thousand places' I did not finish the book.

This was for a student who mentioned to me that she wanted to travel when she graduated high school. What better book and what better way to "sample" the world than 1,000 Places? I've had this book for years, I put little post-its on the pages of places I go, checking them off. I wonder if I'll hit them all??? Okay, probably not. Still it's a great goal, and I hope I passed onto her the love of travel.

Known by his simple and austere lifestyle, Fethullah Gulen, affectionately called Hodjaefendi, is a scholar of extraordinary proportions. This man for all seasons was born in Erzurum, eastern Turkey, in 1941. Upon graduation from a private divinity school in Erzurum, he obtained his license and began to preach and teach about the importance of understanding and tolerance. His social reform efforts have made him one of Turkey's most well-known and respected public figures during the 1960s. Though simple in outward appearance, he is original in thought and action. He embraces all humanity, and is deeply averse to unbelief, injustice, and deviation. His belief and feelings are profound, and his ideas and approach to problems are both wise and rational. A living model of love, ardor, and feeling, he is extraordinarily balanced in his thoughts, acts, and treatment of matters. Turkish intellectuals and scholars acknowledge, either tacitly or explicitly, that he is one of the most serious and important thinkers and writers, and among the wisest activists of twentieth-century Turkey or even of the Muslim world. But such accolades of his leadership of a new Islamic intellectual, social, and spiritual revival—a revival with the potential to embrace great areas of the world—do not deter him from striving to be no more than a humble servant of God and a friend to all. Desire for fame is the same as show and ostentation, a "poisonous honey" that extinguishes the heart's spiritual liveliness, is one of the golden rules he follows. Gulen has spent his adult life voicing the cries and laments, as well as the beliefs and aspirations, of Muslims in particular and of humanity in general. Fethullah Gülen, the leader behind the Hizmet movement, recently wrote a biographical account of the Prophet Muhammad’s life and spiritual journey, as well as the characteristics of prophets throughout time. This project, titled Messenger of God, is beautifully written and perfect for those interested in theology, history, and Islam’s role in both. As an American non-Muslim, I was unaware of many of the iconic moments in the Prophet Muhammad’s life, such as his encounter with the Christian monk Bahira, his exemplary relationship with his first wife Khadija, his role as a teacher to those he encountered, and his confrontations with nonbelievers in Medina. However, I feel that I have as basic an understanding as a non-Muslim could have because of the fine details that Gülen paid in every paragraph he wrote. Every paragraph was meticulously written with a clear intention. In some parts of the book, Gülen simply wanted to convey his love and adoration for the Prophet. In others, he wanted to explain the aspects of Islam that are frequently misunderstood, such as jihad and polygamy. Gülen’s tone was so profound to me that I mentioned it to my mother, explaining that I found his book both informative and sincere. I would highly recommend the book to anyone who’s curious about Islam and the Prophet Muhammad, or seeks a better understanding of either.

Written by the famous Turkish humanist Fethullah Gulen- its a study of the Prophets life, of his companions, and of Prophethood in general. It is a long work- a joining of two volumes. All in all, it is a good book, a great deal of interesting information, although sometimes it gets a quite gushy and sentimental- using images of flowers, gardens, jewels, etc- although the style is generally elegant. The best parts were Military Dimensions of the Prophet's life (which bring to the front how incredible his military skills and planning), and Other Dimensions of his Prophethood (which illumine other aspects, such as his mercy, generosity, spirituality with clear examples). The Section on the Companions and Successors was interesting, showing how the early Muslim community was seriously and intensely set on scholarship concerning what the Prophet had transmitted. A good book, but unlike Martin Lings's famous biography and Qadi Iyad's Shifa, it may not be one I'll come back to.

In Islam, the Messenger is perceived as the One who demonstrated how the message of God should be lived in life. In other words, the Messenger is the living Message of God. This book deeply immerse its readers to the life of the Messenger. It is unique in its style.Rather than going over the chronological events, the book dwells into the character of the Messenger. It helps the readers to grasp the actions of the Messenger: how and why He acted in certain ways, what the context and cause of the events. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning how the Messenger lived his life.

About the Author

Dean W. Wichern is Professor Emeritus at the Mays School of Business at Texas A&M University. He holds membership in the American Statistical Association, Royal Statistical Society, International Institute of Forecasters, and Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences. He is the author for four textbooks and was Associate Editor of  Journal of Business and Economic Statistics from 1983-1991.

 

                  

Professor Richard A. Johnson is Professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of Wisconsin. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the American Statistical Association and he is amember of the Royal Statistical Society and International Statistical Institute. Excellent reference for learning classical (and some other) multivariate techniques

This book is essential for any researcher - those who need to understand the mathematical underpinnings of various multivariate techniques such as multivariate linear regression, principal components, factor analysis, clustering techniques (decision trees). It thoroughly covers the basics of linear algebra (matrix math, calculating eigenvalues/vectors/...) before going into detail on the multivariate normal distribution which is often used for inferential purposes in multivariate regression, principal components, factor analysis, and some classification/clustering techniques. The authors clearly show how the math works behind these popular multivariate techniques.

There are some reviews that point out the endless formulas and proofs in this book, and I agree that the book is slanted to those with a mathematical background. If you've taken calculus courses and a linear algebra course (although they do review important linear algebra topics) in college then you shouldn't have too much of a problem understanding this book, as the authors have done an excellent job in being as lucid as one can in teaching topics like this. Also, there are plenty of examples, and the authors usually end each chapter with a check list of how to apply the techniques, and discuss how graphical tools (dot charts, chi-square plots) can be used to assess the appropriateness of the statistical technique. Each chapter has an equal set of applied and proof problems, catering both to applied and theoretical researchers.

In short, I would say that the writing style is similar to Kutner's Applied Linear Models book or Agresti's Categorical Data Analysis, and simpler to grasp than say, Casella's Statistical Inference book or Mccullagh's Generalized Linear Models book. Great book.

Veryconfusing and difficult to reproduce the examples

Chapter 11 , Discrimination and Classification is , Example 11.3, the author uses Hemophilia dataset. If you go back to the resources the datasets are named in a different order and you cannot identify which is Hemophilia dataset.

The example shows averages by groups for two covariates and these averages do not match the averages in Hemophilia dataset.
y(hat) = (x1(bar) - x2(bar))%*%S(pooled)^-1%*%x, this is very confusing, because what is x1(bar), is it the average of values in x1 covariate ? The notations used are very confusing ?

Also the author uses 0.2418 as value for x1(bar) then after four lines the author uses ( -0.0065 , -0.0390) as values for x1(bar)....ahhh...

Not a good book for "Applied" Multivariate Analysis.

Great book but BE AWARE OF PAPERBACK VERSION!!

Great book. I used it for an online course. It does have a section on matrix algebra and vectors, in case it has been a while since doing matrix algebra. Examples are great and very detailed.

Be aware of paperback version. There is no US paperback version of this! I bought this used for about $80 from seller AlLilydale11 about a year ago. I just tried to resell it and found out I couldn't. The book I have is only worth about $20. I realized that I had paid for a used HARDCOVER US edition of the book, but received a paperback international version. There was too much time in between ordering and receiving that I didn't realize the paperback format was wrong, I just assumed I got what I ordered. This paperback version can only be sold in Asian countries and so if you try to sell it back to a bookstore, they won't take it. The ISBN number cannot be found on a lot of online resell places. Unfortunately, too late to give seller feedback because I am upset.

Only the VERY Basics of 2D Game Making

I bought this book for three reasons. First, it was highly rated and well-reviewed. Second, it was the 2nd Edition (Updated for XNA 4.0) and the 1st edition was also highly rated and well-reviewed. Third, it specifically mentions 2D development.

I was not disappointed.

The book reads easily, and has no typo's so fallowing each chapter as written end in completed works with little trouble. The authors sense of humor shows occasionally but with good taste and only to offer added emphasis to points made. So as a whole this is a book full of very little filler, mostly good information. I was happy to have purchased it and very happy after completing it... That is, until I started to take what I leaned in it and apply it to my own game idea(s)... I quickly found that there are a few very specific details that are never touched upon, that many would expect when making a modern PC game.

It is the lack of these details that force me to give this a 4 out of 5 stars...

Cons: (For 2D Games)
- No 2D Matrix Transform lessons. (Manipulating the View Port directly)
- No camera control with mouse. (Grab & Drag, Zoom to Cursor, Click & Center, or even Mouse wheel Zoom)
- No screen selection by mouse. (Individual or group select by L-click and drag)
- No GUI (Graphical Use Interface) lessons, past putting the score & number of lives on screen.
- No tile based world lessons. (Used in nearly every 2D game today, ie: platformers and RPG's)

While this is a relatively small number of issues, and does not take into account 3D development, I still found it necessary to come here and write this review in hopes of better informing anyone looking to purchase this. If you intend to develop 2D games (which is pretty much what you have to do as an independent developer) you may want to consider the lack of some of the more significant features in modern 2D games.

Excellent resource for XNA

This was my first XNA book that I really sat down with and completed. I want to thank the author and editors for making sure the material in this book was extremely straight-forward without error. You can read this book from beginning to end and the author instructs the reader with detailed and specific instructions on how to accomplish the tasks at hand. He explains concepts extremely well and expands on them each chapter with some reflective questions and tests. I would recommend this book to anybody out there that wants to start game development using XNA, or even if they've already started XNA: this book has a lot of useful information.

The book leaves off with the reader wanting more 3D knowledge, but the 3D chapters are adequate for a rough start. I've learned a lot from this book and it will be in my personal collection for quite some time.

Great book for those with programming experience but new to XNA

I'm a professional software developer (not game-related though) with a lot of experience in C#, and toy with game programming as a hobby. I've grabbed some other books in the past but none got me excited about finally sitting down and working on a game like this one did.

The main strength of this book over others I've seen is that it seems to land in just about the right spot as far as treating the reader like an XNA and game development newbie without also treating you like you're a newbie to C# or programming in general. I hate it when a book wastes my time teaching me the basics of programming... this book gets right to it in describing how XNA works. It doesn't go into as much detail as some other XNA books, which means its definitely a book I'm going to recommend to anyone else who wants to learn XNA, but it probably won't end up sitting on the desk as a reference book and probably won't have much use to someone already familiar with XNA. Of course, the word "learning" in the title should probably make that clear!

Bsisu, an Ohio chef by way of Jordan, Lebanon, Kuwait and England, sets out to define the cuisine of the Arab world. As she points out, a quarter of the globe is covered in her treatise, and she lovingly explores and clearly explains dishes from Morocco, Tunisia, Iraq, Syria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Yemen and the Arabian Gulf. What's most apparent is that Arab meals are elemental in nature, more often reliant upon foodstuffs than technique. There are perhaps a dozen key ingredients on which most of these 160 recipes are based. Bulgur (cracked wheat) gives rice a run for its money as the grain of choice and is integral in making Kibeh, an all-purpose dish that also employs beef or lamb, and a mix of spices, and can be made into skewers, balls or cooked in a baking dish. Overall a good cookbook...I encountered only 2 small difficulties

First, I want to say that I really liked the author. I enjoy learning about the Arabic culture through her, and I also appreciate the tips she gave about the food preparation. I felt as if she was writing this book for her grand-daughters :) She makes the book very personal by telling stories of her childhood and her dad. I really enjoyed learning about her dad and how he was the expert and connoisseur in the Arabic cuisine at her house. I could really picture that! In my family is the same, my brother doesn't cook but he is the first person to give his "expert" opinion or verdict! ;)

I have enjoyed learning about new spices, such as Cardamon and Sumac. There are several dishes and spices that we also use in the Ecuadorian kitchen, so it has been interesting to recognize the several similarities. :) I also appreciate that the author gives suggestions about side dishes for each main dish. I loved learning about "Labneh" and now have it everyday (what a delicious way to get all those good cultures for the tummy!). I tried the recipe for the cake date, the apricot juice, the Arabic coffee (it tasted just the same as in the Middle Eastern restaurants!) and the simple "white coffee". I also tried the Fried Eggs with Sumac, and really liked it. As for Main Courses, I tried the Chicken & Yogurt and the Shish Tawook, both turned out REALLY good...even though, the times for cooking were not as instructed (I explain more about this in next paragraph).

The only 2 drawbacks I have are as follows: I'm not sure if it's a matter of my oven/stove? I have other cookbooks, but I have not had problems with the times for cooking before. So, when the recipe in this cookbook calls for 30 minutes cooking, I have to add an extra 15 to 20 minutes & be watching it doesn't burn. It makes it more difficult that I'm not sure how it's supposed to look or smell while cooking. (So, I have used youtube a few times for extra info). Also, many recipes require lamb...and I'm not there yet.

To conclude, I recommend this book but keep in mind that the times didn't work for me, and that many recipes in the Main Course section require lamb. I think you would enjoy this book, but I'm going to get the Middle East cookbook by Claudia Roden next time.

Great backstory implemented into the recipe

The beginning of the cook book details her life and experiences with different foods. I am more drawn to books with photo examples of the food. I like a visual with what I am making to know what I am looking for to make. There are some gems in this book and recommend taking a look. I think it would be great for someone who likes to read a backstory or new to Arabic cooking.

Cream of the Crop, a MUST HAVE!

The Arab Table by Mary Bsisu is a must have for anyone interested in Middle Eastern cooking.

I have read the other reviews and agree that it is a 5 star book.

One thing of note---one of the other reviewers criticized Bsisu for citing too many contributors to her book. Why? She had her own recipes and if she collected recipes from others that indicates only that she knows a good recipe when she finds it and if she felt that it belonged in her book than good for her for adding it, it can only benefit us the readers.

I used to live in the caribbean and made perfect baklava there many times. When I came back to the States all my batches of baklava were ruined by sugar syrup that had crystallized by the next day. For the life of me I couldn't figure out what was going on and wondered if it had something to do with the humidity?!?! My sister in law cooks her sugar syrup for 10 minutes, my mother in law for an hour, so I knew it had to be something scientific, maybe due to temperature not length of time cooked. Neither my MIL or SIL could explain it.

WHile reading BSISU's cookbook (it makes fine reading even when you don't have anything particular you want to look up), i came across a recipe for Kunafa bi Jibin, or Shredded Pastry with Cheese. In this recipe, she gave instructions on making the sugar syrup, including " Let the syrup boil until it has reached the thread stage (about 225 on a candy thermometer)". HELLO! this was my mistake and this is the ONLY cookbook i have seen this mentioned in out of many, many middle eastern/greek cookbooks. So I applaud her (and THANK her because imagine making a whole pan of baklava only to have it ruined by the next day---heartbreak). BUT, to the subject of the other reviewers comments about her book being a collaboration of recipes from many people, I have to point out that the ONLY place this temperature is mentioned is in the Kunafa with cheese recipe, not the Sugar syrup recipe (which is on the page before), or the baklava recipe, or the regular konafa recipe. I do think that this is an omission because such a simple instruction should have definitely been in the sugar syrup recipe, and the fact that it is not leads me to believe that the recipes came from different people or sources.

Anyhow, the price of the book definitely pays for itself just for saving my baklava.

The explanations of customs and holy days are interesting and entertaining, and nowadays any book that can shed light (in a positive way) on how arab/middle eastern people live can only help to broaden the understanding between people which will benefit us all.

Motivational with Helpful Tips - Not an Epiphany on Dating

I'll preface this by saying the few dating/relationship books I've flipped through or read descriptions for often come across as very condescending to women. This is especially true if meant to unveil the "male mind" and give it to us straight - the "ugly truth" type of stuff. They make women feel bad for being women. You come away from just one little paragraph feeling like men essentially don't like women (beyond the physical). We're told we need to be more feminine, but also think like men, less clingy, but not too independent - etc. Here is a book which focuses less on how women need to change their nature, needs, desires, etc, as if we're hopelessly incompatible with men by nature, and instead it focuses on social skills & positive thinking modes for attracting & developing relationships with compatible men we actually like & who are worth OUR time & energy.

None of this is earth-shattering, mind-blowing secrets that will give you some epiphany on love & life. Instead, it reads like common sense, the kind many of us missed the memo on, so that it's not so "common" after all.

This book doesn't insult your intelligence, berate you for being a woman, tell you that you have to compromise your values, or leave with some sick feeling that manipulation of men & dishonesty with your own feelings/needs is the "secret".

The explanations of male thinking is also not "boys will be boys" trash that insists sexist and misogynistic behaviors are simply "biological" for men & have to be tolerated by women. Instead of making excuses, the author manages to be honest & fair in describing common male mindsets & how & why certain negative attitudes/behaviors are triggered (much as stereotypical female negative behaviors can be triggered by crappy moves on a guys' part). Since a relationship is a dynamic, it's only fair to adjust what you can control - yourself. So you learn very subtle methods to hone your social & dating skill to basically COMMUNICATE in a way that men in general will grasp correctly.

This is why the book had some good advice & was worth the read - the basic idea is how to communicate who you are, how you feel, and what you expect accurately & in a way that is understood by men. So it's not about changing who you are so much as really communicating it more clearly. If you're the kind of girl whose friends & family & co-workers wonder why you're single because they think you're the bees knees, but for someone reason men you meet/briefly date aren't valuing you the same way, then this might be a helpful read. You're probably not sending the signals which communicate who YOU are correctly; you're leaving false & bad impressions. So the book is really about being MORE yourself with communication that others understand & which creates the desired effect.

A book which is founded on ideas about good communication & keeping integrity is one whose advice I feel I can trust & recommend. It has a "win-win" approach that doesn't degrade men or women - how to get what you desire/need while giving someone else what they desire/need too. Building mutually satisfying relationships is the goal, not manipulating your dream man into marrying you (blech - what an idea!).

I appreciate that this book is about subtle nuances too. Often we don't know what we do wrong because it's not anything big but a subtle signal, and we don't know why our positive signals are ignored & that's because they are TOO subtle. This advice rang true because I've noted men in general communicate more with action & are generally MORE sensitive than women, meaning they need LOUDER positive signals & SOFTER negative ones. The author refers to this as the "fragile male ego" which is really SENSITIVITY.

It also rang true that we tend to attract someone when not interested in them because we're being our authentic selves - so how do we replicate that comfortable inner state & natural outer state so we can be our best, authentic selves when interacting with someone we are attracted to? How can we communicate that quickly, when we may have a few hours, minutes, seconds even to inspire a guy to pursue us? This book gives basic tips on how to do that.

I emphasize this book is very basic. Do not expect an epiphany. A lot of it may feel like reminders of things you know, deep down, but often forget or even compromise consciously.

A downside: the book directs you to online videos for more "secrets" which are really just teasers which lead you to another video they want you to pay for. I can see this as being an endless goose chase designed to keep you hooked & shelling out money while learning very little. I'd have more respect for the author & brand if they took a less scam-like approach. The video they want you to buy has a long intro to sell it which does the classic "play on women's insecurities & promise grand secrets to solve all of their romance problems in a matter of days" approach, one which many dating gurus do. I find it borderline insulting & I naturally expect it to under-deliver with super obvious "insight" repeated ad nauseam just as the rest seem to. This approach is unfortunate & detracts from a brand that has the potential to be more positive & actually useful, as opposed to the insulting junk I described at the outset.

So don't expect too much & don't shell out a lot of money. There are basic principles here which are useful as reminders & to polish your social & dating skills, but no more than that.

I have heard Matthew Hussey speak on the radio and I was looking forward to reading his book, bu I was dissapointed to learn that after every chapter I had to sign in to the websiteand become a paid member in order to look t th video that accompanied each chapter......I felt thi was more of a pay as you go long "help book" than anyhing else.......I was extremely dissapointed and expected more from the author.......

I'm embarrassed to say that I was dumb enough to be conned by a slick snake oil salesman. That's all he is. A cute , energetic , great salesman. Save your money , you already know all of his so called "secrets" and "tips".There's no wonder to me that he himself cannot retain a partner. I bought this and 2 others from his company .What a waste of my hard earned money!!
And do not , under ANY circumstances order directly from his "empire's" site ! His company illegally keeps your payment method on file and you WILL start getting random fraudulent charges for his other crap, "coaching" bs and all of his other nonsense , while entertaining , is as useless as this book .
