An Act of Courage (Acts of Honor Series Book 4), by K.C. Lynn

She’s the light from his past.

He’s the one her heart has always longed for.

Trained by the best, Christopher Walker has fought hard for his country and even harder to forget the only girl he’s ever loved. He spent countless nights submerged in death and destruction only to find himself clinging to the memories of her when the darkness crept in.

When her life is threatened, Christopher will stop at nothing to protect her. Even if it means having to confront his past.

Alissa Malone never thought she would find herself face-to-face again with the only boy she’s ever loved. But she soon realizes Christopher is not the same man he once was.

His touch is still electrifying—his voice still earth shattering. But there’s a darkness about him that wasn’t there before. A pain he harbors so deep that she can feel it all the way to her soul.

One fateful moment destroyed his very existence, and only one person will be able to make him realize that what he considers an act of dishonor was truly an act of courage.

This is Book Four in the Acts Of Honor series, the spin-off series to Men Of Honor. It is not necessary to read all the other books in the series. However, I do highly recommend that you at least read Resisting Temptation, the third book in the Men of Honor series since this is where these Characters story began.

“Even heroes have the right to bleed”
By N Miller
I always brace myself a little and try to mentally prepare myself before I start a KC Lynn Book and I don’t mean that in a bad way, not at all, but you just have to so that you can come out whole at the end. You see, she has this amazing talent and brings you a story with these realistic characters that nestle their way into your heart and once they are there, they just don’t leave. They stay with you forever and I am absolutely fine with that, I actually welcome them, because each set of characters is almost better than the last. It’s just really hard to get over when the story comes to an end.

We first meet Christopher in Resisting Temptation and I knew then, he was going to be an amazing man. The love and fierce devotion he had for Ruthie spoke volumes!!! Despite the horrible first half of his life, it was simply how he was made, add to that having our original Men of Honor as role models, it was just his destiny.

Christopher wasn’t ever a trusting kid and let very few people into his circle, but when he meets Alissa, she breaks down all those barriers and tunnels her way right into his heart. They have the cutest of courtships that turns into a soulful love as adults. Unfortunately, life (and an over bearing meddling mom) get in the way and the two are separated for about 5 years. Fast forward to the future and you are thrust into the best Navy Seals movie eva and it’s game on!!!!!

Once Alissa gets Christopher back into her life she a’int letting him get away, not again. I loved this girl so hard! The way she loves Christopher, good lord the feels, it was just so amazing. I’m not going to lie, the poor girl really has her work cut out for her, the Christopher we all fell in love with is just a shell of a man when they meet up again. One thing’s for sure though, Alissa is a fighter and she wants her man back.

True to KC Lynn fashion, she takes us on an epic journey to reunite these two -- so much so that I am still not over this book and its been a week since I finished. My best advice when going in, is to make sure your ready to settle in for an action packed, phenomenal love story and know that you will in fact leave whole. You won’t leave happy because you will still want more, but you will leave with your heart in tact.

5 Facing Your Demons To Get Your Forever Love!!!
By Franci Neill
There is so very much I want to tell you about Christopher and Alissa’s story that truly gutted me with all the emotions I felt while reading this hauntingly beautiful story of love. This is book four in the Acts of Honor series and can be read after Resisting Temptation, book three in the Men of Honor (Cade and Faith’s book) series. It “could” be read as a standalone but you won’t have the same feels if you haven’t read Resisting Tempation.

On to the all the feels of this book. K.C. Lynn has the uncanny ability to draw her readers into the story from the very first page. I mean literally I was barely into the book and I was crying already. My heart so heavy for Christopher and what he’s dealing with both before he leaves Sunset Bay to his return five years later a completely different person that has some fierce demons he has to face. One of the ways he escapes his nightmares is his music….

“When music is at its loudest that’s when silence descends upon me. My demons are finally quiet.”

Not only is music his escape, but it also has the power of healing and we experience that in so many ways throughout this book. From his playing and singing, to Faith’s music program and to some very little souls that will have a profound effect on Christopher’s life.

The one person that has the greatest chance of getting him through this darkness is Alissa. Their love, even though it has a gap of time, is a love that is all consuming and breathtakingly beautiful. She just “gets him” and no matter how much he wants to push her away, Alissa is determined to be his salvation….

“Every second I will suffer alongside of him until he finds the light.”

Those words are so profound because it proves that yes, there are people that are meant to be ours and even if the journey leads down a rugged path, if you believe in love and all it has to offer, your life can be complete and your heart can be happy. Alissa is Christopher’s light. Alissa has the ability to bring our Christopher back to us. Alissa is willing to be the person that will be his salvation and Christopher knows it….

“I need you because you’re my anchor. My light. My salvation in the night. My angel. My peace. The best part of me.

As I said a little earlier, the range of emotions that I experienced reading this book shocked even me. One minute I was happy and thrilled by what was happening and the next minute I was crying. There’s so much to this book to absorb and appreciate and get lost in. There’s suspense, tension, some of the hottest sex I’ve ever read about, like WOWZA hot along with a good old fashioned love story.

This is a must read book and I for one will be reading it again and again because it’s JUST THAT GOOD!!!!

*****5++ ‘Bubblegum Kisses & Tulip Wishes’ STARS*****
By Dates With K
A beautiful love story that sings of pain and hope, beauty from ashes, I’m not sure I can adequately tell you what this book conveys any more than I can put the beat of my heart to paper. This is a stunning tale of redemption and love, faith and family. And so very much more. While this is a love story, at heart this is a life story…and KC Lynn delivers it exquisitely.

“Lis,
Over the years I’ve realized there are moments in our life that irrevocably change us, but there is one in particular that changed mine forever. It was the first day I laid eyes on you. The day I found a piece of heaven to help me get through the hell I was living in.”

Sometimes the most horrific wounds cannot be seen or touched, only felt. Navy veteran Christopher Walker knows all about it. He’s got miles and miles of regrets cloaked in guilt and shame. It’s just a matter of time before that endless cycle of blame comes crashing down around him – not even his music, the heartbeat of his drums, can save him. Alyssa/Lis Malone’s battled with the pain of losing Christopher for years. She’s on a first name basis with hurt and abandonment. Moving forward has never been so hard. Their second chance at love…it decimated my heart. And then lit me from within, feeling the full force of their love and devotion to one another. Of prevailing. Of overcoming the darkness.

“I will walk it every day with him, every second I will suffer alongside of him until he finds the light once again.”

Overcoming, however, always comes with a price. Echoes and threads of pain and sorrow compete with the absolute regret Christopher and Alyssa wish they could escape. The pain of seeing the man you love more than life itself drowning knowing you’re not the life jacket, you can’t help, is utterly devastating in its powerlessness. Watching the adopted son you loved from the moment you rescued him from hell struggle with the most horrific choice he could make – all while sitting at his table, feet from you, powerless to take away the shame and guilt. The raw, naked vulnerability of another human being reaching and grasping, hoping his reach will take hold – that absolution is near.

“I never forgot you, Christopher. I never forgot what it felt like to be yours.”

And it is – the soothing comfort of music, family and love are never far. Sometimes in the raging tones of his drums. Sometimes in the strong grasp of Cade Walker’s hand on his shoulder and deep voice telling him he’ll always be there. The healing balm of Faith’s love. The sweet innocent laughter of Mia. In Ruthie’s steadfast devotion and adoration of her big brother – her hero. In the acceptance of Anna’s outreach and ear of his therapist. And the wholly devoted love of a woman who would sacrifice anything for him – that would wait lifetimes for him. While this isn’t an easy story, it’s a beautiful worthwhile story. The moments of light balance the dark, love winning the day. To say I was emotionally invested would be putting it mildly. I haven’t sobbed, laughed, screamed and sat numbly staring at my Kindle in a while. I’ve probably overused the words raw, visceral and painful and that’s what this story evokes. But it’s also so incredibly lovely. It felt like the moment the sun banks the horizon at dawn. That infinitesimal moment where the dark of night is eclipsed by the warmth of the sun lifting in the skies. The possibilities of the day endless and all the hopes and dreams you have seem possible. The moment the sun hits your skin and warms you from within…that, that moment is what I captured and relived when reading this story.

“I pull her in close to comfort her and she loves every wound with her lips, healing them more than time ever will.”

When it comes to tortured heroes and the families and friends that surround them I’m of the opinion that no one – no one – transfers the raw, visceral emotion to paper like Ms. Lynn. The absolute agony of Christopher’s battle shattered my heart into a million pieces, waiting for the moment, the second she would deliver the sweet oblivion of redemption – of hope full circling to completion – the lynchpin of this story. While the circumstances may not be unique, that’s not what this is about. This is about pain, anger, guilt, love, forgiveness, loyalty, brotherhood and family…in all the ways they can conquer you – or heal you. Rebirth can happen in a myriad of ways, but I have to say that Ms. Lynn’s methods are among my favorite.

“The one girl who has always calmed the beast. With just a touch or a look, her light outshines my dark. It always has.”

The care, compassion, love and empathy conveyed by this not so simple tale of a struggling solider and his girl is what separates the great reads from the excellent. That antsy feeling that if you don’t turn one more page, pick up one more piece to the puzzle that you won’t be complete, that you’ll toss and turn at night agonizing over the choices and outcomes of fictional characters made real – that is excellence – and it’s why I’ve automatically read every work produced by Ms. Lynn. Recommended without reservation and a Top Pick for 2017.

“I loved you then, and I love you now. I never stopped.”

K’s Category: Serial Dater – I’ve read every novel/novella released to date.

Characters: M/F

Sex: Yes, descriptive

OW/OM: No

HEA: Yes

Standalone: Although this book can standalone you’ll have a richer character experience by reading Resisting Temptation, Men of Honor #3 prior. This is where a young Christopher and Ruthie are introduced and taken in by Cade and Faith Walker.

The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt by Edmond Morris
By claudia Harper
Written by a brilliant biographer, this book traces the early life of Roosevelt from 1858 to 1901. We see him as a precocious child of a New York aristocratic family, learn of his fascination with nature, particularly insects, and later his travels with parents to the Continent. We see his inquiring, thorough mind as an adolescent, his determination to be healthy and so learning to box; and more travel with his family to the Middle East and Africa, where he is exposed to not only new cultures, but strenuous travel. Eventually he enters Harvard where he finds strengths in science, geography and history shine and weaknesses in math and Latin and Greek; and considers becoming a scientists. He continues to build his body and becomes extremely self-disciplined. Throughout his youth his father is closest to him; and the death of his father is shattering to him. He continues to work on his body-building, taking up rowing until he is tan and forcing himself physically, and meets Alice Hathaway Lee. Out of college, he begins to reconsider his eventual occupation, drawn to politics. During a winter trip to Maine, his health improved; and he discovered he particularly liked talking to those who worked and lived there –“real men.”
These growing years thus set the tone for a lifetime of pushing himself to be physically fit, exploring the extremes of climate and nature’s challenges, talking and learning from the “common man” in each environment he travels and lives in. He discovers the joy of hunting, writing history (especially naval history), ranching and cattle raising, fighting and being a soldier and leader of fighting men. We see him plunge into life, from the “Wild West”—the Dakotas—to the jungles of Cuba. His robust enthusiasm for life grows, his fascination with politics grows, his confidence and magnetism grow. He climbs up the political ladder until he becomes the “Boy Governor” of New York, and later Vice-President of the United States-- just as McKinley is shot and dies. Roosevelt was 42 years old when he became President.

Loved it! Loved it!
By weebiscuit
There's not really much I can add to the other tons of glowing reports on this book, but I would encourage anyone with an interest in Teddy (he hated being called that!) Roosevelt to read it.

I don't believe you need to be a history buff to get into this book, but in all likelihood only those who have such an interest will pick it up. I found it so interesting that I immediately downloaded the second book in the series, "Theodore Rex."

There were so many things to enjoy about this book. Not only was the writing absolutely fluid, but it was also written in such a way as to appeal to a broad audience. Though a scholarly work, it wasn't written to appeal only to graduate students in history, but instead it was written to appeal to the masses.

The photos were a wonderful addition, as well. This book was amply researched and I was so happy to see all the original letters, diaries, and newspapers quoted.

If you really want to get to know Theodore Roosevelt, then read this book! As I stated previously, I'm on the second one in the series and as soon as that's done I'm buying the third. I have over 120 ebooks on my tablet, and I methodically read them in alphabetical order, but when I downloaded "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt" I read the first few pages and couldn't put it down. I read a great many books on a variety of topics, but this is really one of those rare books which has kept me spellbound and not a little disappointed when it ended.

Theodore Roosevelt, a man of destiny
By MAURICE J RUBINO
Edmund Morris's account of Theodore Roosevelt's inevitable journey that takes you from birth to the moment he learns he is president due to the death of President William McKinley is one of the best written books (not just biographies), I have ever read. Certainly the research is evident through the detail of the events recounted. What makes the book worth reading beyond the facts is the precise description of Roosevelt's encounters with nature, the animal world and people of various backgrounds. He is equally comfortable with his own family as he is with the upper class society he meets through his immersion into politics. He is as comfortable leading men to explore the untapped western "badlands" of this country as he is leading them in battle in the liberation of Cuba during the Spanish American war. Morris's book is as close to watching a movie as any book you will ever read.

Constructing Grounded Theory: A Practical Guide through Qualitative Analysis (Introducing Qualitative Methods series), by Kathy Charmaz

Kathy Charmaz is one of the world's leading theorists and exponents of grounded theory. In this important and essential new textbook, she introduces the reader to the craft of using grounded theory in social research, and provides a clear, step-by-step guide for those new to the field. Using worked examples throughout, this book also maps out an alternative vision of grounded theory put forward by its founding thinkers, Glaser and Strauss. To Charmaz, grounded theory must move on from its positivist origins and must incorporate many of the methods and questions posed by constructivists over the past twenty years to become a more nuanced and reflexive practice.

Review

“I love this book. It is the second time I have used it for this course. The doctoral students also find it very useful understanding the grounded theory method.”
―Mary Ann Jezewski, University at Buffalo, SUNY

(Mary Ann Jezewski)

"Constructing Grounded Theory is an outstanding handbook for students and seasoned researchers alike who are using or seeking to understand better the application of qualitative methods of data analysis. This deceptively slim volume is extraordinarily dense and packed with down-to-earth advice, living up to its sub-title as 'a practical guide.'" (Marie L. Radford Science Direct 2008-08-07)

"The excellent articles are well written and accessible."
This handbook is a wonderful resource for scholars, researchers, students, and professionals about a method and theory that has an exceptional potential to 'ignite the mind.'"     (G.K. Hearn Choice 2008-08-14)

terrific guide
By A. Johannes
Kathy Charmaz makes a lot of quite confusing information so accessible and does so by giving really good examples from different grounded theory research projects. Her writing, and her research, is lively and interesting and welcoming to new researchers. It's also a great lesson in how something as dense as Strauss and Glaser's early work can be made clear and practical. It's unlikely I would ever teach a class on this subject, but if I was to do so I would absolutely use this. I hesitated a bit over the Kindle price and would have preferred some kind of deal where both the hard copy and the Kindle version were available for one price, as I wanted both, but a couple of chapters in I felt great about the purchase.

Great guide to one particular style of Grounded Theory
By Wayne P.
Ever since Strauss and Corbin introduced Grounded Theory as a qualitative research methodology, some qualitative researchers have criticized the method as being "too post-positivist." Enter Chamaz' style of Grounded Theory. Here is a style which is clearly and explicitly based in a social constructionist epistemology. It is very well written and makes, in my opinion, a very valuable guide for the experienced qualitative researcher and the neophyte researcher alike. I have a print copy of the book in my office and a Kindle version on my iPad. This is one book I like to have handy for ready reference where ever I may be. If you are thinking about using Grounded Theory for a research project, I highly recommend this book as your guide.

Good book
By Gloria
I found a good approach to grounded theory in this book. In fact, you can find comparisons between theorists in the book and this enriches the reading. It has good tips for people, like me, who is entering in the world of grounded theory, and helps to clarify some misunderstandings about it. I recommend it for begginers. You won't get boring with it. It is easy to read it even for non English speakers like me.

OK for experienced programmers new to C#
By Amazon Customer
Update (4/6/2003): I feel it's important to modify my rating and approval of the book relative to some of the additional texts I've since read. I also applied an edit to correct a misunderstanding on my part and added some additional material. I still agree with most of my original thoughts on the book, but feel the book isn't thorough enough to be called "Mastering." I've since discovered the Applications Development in .Net books by Robert Oberg and crew (they have a very nice line of introductory and intermediate/advanced texts for both C# and VB.Net from Prentice Hall), and feel these books are superior in explaining the languages and their overall context in the .Net world. They also have somewhat more useful examples. The Price and Gunderloy book is still decent, and I still hold by my audience recommendations, but I feel an overall score of 2.5 to 3 stars is more appropriate.
----
This book is reasonably well written and easy to read. It's a decent overview of both the C# language and .Net, so it's a good first book for programmers trying to understand these new technologies, but I'm not so sure I would recommend it to pure programming beginners.
As one review stated there are cases where some important concepts are not as thoroughly covered as they could be. There are also some inconsistencies and small lapses that shouldn't hurt experienced programmers, but may confuse novices. An example is the case where they discuss the difference between using the 'override' and 'new' keywords with methods; they give a good general explanation, but mention that there are exceptions. They do not, however, identify the exceptions, and this may leave more curious and experienced developers hanging. The code examples in the book are useful, but as another reviewer stated, they are often reprinted at the end of the section which results in a lot of redundant pages where additional examples would have been more welcome.
The tradeoff for the surface skimming approach is that the book's pace, for the right audience, is swift. Experienced developers, and especially JAVA or C coders, will rip through the first third of the book and get a good basic understanding of the C# syntax. The authors don't compare JAVA and C# in the way Bruce Eckels does with C++ and JAVA in his Thinking in JAVA text, which would have been a useful approach for JAVA developers, but their approach leaves the book a bit more accessible.
I was also pleased that with few exceptions the examples all compiled and ran. I've worked with some books where there were errors in the examples and this made active learning more troublesome. The exception is that in defining database access in some of the last chapters, I had to do a little more tinkering to get access rights to the SQL Server database working. I think the book would be better if it skipped the chapter on SQL and expanded the ADO.NET chapter to include security/signon and setup issues with databases with .Net objects.
It is true that the chapters in the middle and last thirds of the book probably don't also contain as much detail as those experienced in .Net and ASP might prefer, but again, the collective approach of the book gives the experienced developer new to .Net and C# a quick trip through the languange and how it integrates with .Net. One problem it has in common with a lot of programming books is that the examples are a little too simple. You will know how to build a Web service in C# with VS.Net when you are done with this book, but it won't do much and the intricacies of distributed computing aren't really deeply discussed.
Recommendations
New to programming: not recommended
Experienced programmer, but new to .Net or C#: recommended
Experienced programmer, experienced with .Net and C#: consider a reference text or advanced programming book instead

Unquestionably a good first C# book
By Rupesh Verma
If you are familiar with OOP/C++/Java and want to pick up main C# concepts in a hurry, get this book. Although I did read Tom Archer's "Inside C#" before this one, and some tutorials on the net, I think this book deserves to be the first C# book for a beginner or an intermediate programmer. It has a decent aggregation & coherent explanantions of all the major C# topics and uses Visual Studio.NET IDE in its examples (which I think is really important for a C# book). One minor drawback is that some important topics(like Web Services and .NET Remoting) are given just a cursory treatment. But I guess, such vast topics merit devoted books just for those. Beware however, I came across 2 critical bugs - Ch 12, first page it says method signature is composed of method name, return type and parameter list (actually its just the parameter list and method name) and on page 794, chapter on ADO.NET it says to use Fill method on DataSet object to synchronize changes made to the DataSet with Database(in reality you should use Update method). It even gives an introduction to ASP.NET and ADO.NET but you have to look for other sources to learn those technologies well.

Overall, its a good book to invest your money and time in.

From Publishers Weekly
In her sometimes clumsy but compelling first novel, the author of The Spiral Dance (a central work in the women's spirituality movement) considers two possible futures for America. In ecologically devastated mid-21st-century California, San Francisco is a precariously maintained oasis, its society based on egalitarianism and environmentalism, its deeply spiritual populace possessed of psychic and mystical powers. Drought-plagued southern California suffers under an oppressive, militaristic, technocratic regime that spouts a perverted Christian ideology. After 20 years of uneasy peace, the south's armies mass to invade the north, whose militantly nonviolent denizens must decide how to defend themselves without compromising their pacifism. Starhawk delivers her message with a heavy hand and several cliches: her besieged utopia echoes the liberal politics and ecofeminism of her nonfiction; her dystopia features the overused SF bugbear of Christian fanaticism. However, she creates memorable characters--a young midwife, a broken musician, an old Witch-Woman--and skillfully conveys their emotions in gripping, sometimes harrowing scenes set against vivid backdrops. Though the resolution is somewhat pat--and an obvious plug for Starhawk's philosophy--the story is moving and absorbing.
Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Known for her works in women's spirituality and ecofeminism, Starhawk has conjured a visionary tale of a multicultural community of witches where poverty, prejudice, hunger, and thirst do not prevail. The surrounding world, set in present-day San Francisco, manifests every 20th-century nightmare: ozone depletion, deadly pollution, a fundamentalist religion-based government, and food and water shortages. The central question haunting a community of well-cast characters is how to resist invading Southern forces without resorting to violence. This strong debut fits well among feminist futuristic, utopic, and dystopic works by the likes of Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Ursula LeGuin, and Margaret Atwood. Starhawk is the author of The Spiral Dance ( LJ 11/1/79), Dreaming the Dark ( LJ 9/15/82), and Truth or Dare (HarperSanFrancisco, 1989). Recomended for literary collections.

From Kirkus Reviews
This first novel from Starhawk (Dreaming the Dark, 1982, etc.) is a big, shaggy, sloppy dog of a fantasy about a great war taking place during the 21st century: A city of eco-feminist witches must stand up to the violence of an army bred on a repressive Christian ideology that justifies the greed of a corporate cabal of rich white men. As the story opens, Maya, a 99-year-old writer of tales about witchcraft, climbs a steep San Francisco hill and surveys a kind of reclaimed paradise: The streets have been torn up, and organic gardens bloom everywhere. Since a great ``uprising'' some years before, the city has become a kind of pagan theocracy, run by guilds and councils of eco-feminist witches who have made it a green spot in the surrounding desert. The rest of the country is ruled by the ``Stewards''--a ruthless corporate power that justifies inhuman exploitation under the banner of the ``Millennialists,'' a fundamentalist sect that is not above breeding whores and soldiers in ``pens.'' Maya is witness to a battle that kills--or tests--many of her loved ones. First, her grandson Bird returns after ten years in a prison in the ``Southland.'' While he was away, the Stewards/Millennialists have sent an engineered virus to San Francisco that killed a good many of the population. Madrone, the grandchild of Maya's woman lover and male compa¤ero (almost every witch is bisexual), is a gifted healer, so she is sent to the dangerous Southland to teach the rebel ``Web'' to heal themselves and to bring back specimens of the virus. Madrone returns after many narrow escapes to find the city occupied by the ruthless army of the Stewards--forcing the witches to put to the ultimate test their commitment to nonviolence. Starhawk deserves points for her idealism, but her vision and characterizations are only half-realized here--and further muddied as she goes on far, far too long. -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. This book is amazing in that it was written over 20 years ago ...
By Texas Rose
This was the first novel written by Starhawk; however, I strongly encourage you to FIRST real her prequel to this: Walking to Mercury. That book sets up the characters and story line for this. However, The Fifth Sacred Thing stands on its own if you have not or choose not to read the other. This book is amazing in that it was written over 20 years ago in 1993. At that time, it was viewed almost as a work of science fiction because of the outlandish premise that corporations would rule the world, genetic testing would evolve into human breeding, and water would become so scarce that wars would be fought over it. However, today, this novel is right at the point of totally becoming true.

I warn sensitive readers that in the second half of the book, the graphic details of how humans are treated at the hands of the corporate 1%ers is so awful that you will have trouble sleeping, not because it is so awful, but because it is so current and not just possible be already being done in our world right now. It would only take a little push by the super wealthy for our world to totally devolve into the story Starhawk presents here in The Fifth Sacred Thing.

You will have to read to see how it all ends, and how our current world may soon be. Then, dive right into her third novel - just published - The City of Refuge - where the same characters and story line continues.

But I can say, that even though I have finished reading The Fifth Sacred Thing, I still get nightmares, especially after hearing a news item....

New Age Eco-Political Sci-Fi
By Elizabeth K
I am an old Hippie of sorts and also have Native American roots that make me lean toward a Nature Loving Path of Spirituality, So this book fits into much of what I understand of the real world. But the criticism I have on this book is it tries way too hard to incorporate all of the NEW AGE ever imagined, into one story - and a post-apocalypse adventure story at that,

A really fun book to read, hummm,,, for some people. BUT be aware it has a naivety that will make many readers put it down, to never return,

My recommendation? Put on your tie-dyed garb, drink a bit of sweet wine, perhaps indulge in some other mild recreational adult pleasure, and go back to 1960's thinking. It's us against the establishment again. Contradiction? All this is set in the future, after unknowns have dropped the bomb in California. I also read it as an exercise to show the classic culture clash that exists today, between San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Creative wisdom for the inner journey and the outer collapse
By Laura Bruno
A local friend suggested I read "The Fifth Sacred Thing," so that some of us could form a book discussion group about the ideas and vision of this novel. Although it took me awhile to get into the characters, I quickly saw why my friend has read this book three times and counting. It's filled with permaculture principles, magick, natural healing, and the tension between totalitarian dystopia and a power-from-within ecotopia based upon respect, not control.

I found Starhawk's text incredibly prophetic, even when I thought it was written in 2005. My admiration tripled when I noticed a publication date of 1993! In 2013, as we face nuclear and toxic poisoning of the Pacific Ocean, a no longer hidden Police State, genetic manipulation, a transhumanist agenda, biological warfare, and increasingly intense weather events -both natural and human-aggravated -- the setting of this novel in 2048 feels rather optimistic.

Once I managed to get a handle on the characters, I found the book difficult to put down. As the narrative continued, I realized that the initial ambiguities and confusion about gender, age and physical markers, actually contribute to and underscore the tale. As readers, we quickly find ourselves overwhelmed in and by a post-collapse world, unsure exactly which collapse triggered which events, but gradually recognizing the effects of long-term trauma and difficult life. Things the 20th and early 21st centuries took for granted have not been available for at least a generation, and the ripple effects of such deprivations reach much further than minor or anticipated inconvenience.

At the same time, we find that some things in this future society function much more harmoniously than in our current one. In the absence of cars, trucks and planes, this culture has compensated for its isolation by cultivating the individual gifts of each member of the community -- art, music, healing, science, cooking, dreaming and psychic defense. Everyone gardens and participates in seasonal rituals, and the society bases itself around the premise that the Four Sacred Things (fire, water, air, earth) are so sacred that they cannot be privately owned. "May you never hunger; may you never thirst" is a phrase used in real-life pagan gatherings, but in "The Fifth Sacred Thing," this concept forms the basis of an entire political system! No one goes hungry, and no one goes without water.

As the plot rolls on, we see just how innovative and special this city's solutions are. Contrast via epic journeys to the Southlands shows us that -- despite the obvious challenges up North in 2048 -- things could be (and are) much worse elsewhere. The characters face horrific trials that force them to question not only their own morals and philosophies, but also the very essence of what it means to be human. Readers with rigid ideas about sexuality, self-defense, magick, religion, medicine, technology, and the occult will likely find themselves extremely challenged as they journey with the characters. Author Starhawk practices the Reclaiming Tradition, which combines one's spirituality with non-violent political activism. Throughout her novel, we witness the effectiveness of non-violent resistance, as well as its limitations. The characters' reactions and struggles force us to evaluate our own fixed ideals, hypocrisy, privilege and irresponsibility. We see on every level how each small action affects the whole of Creation, often in dramatic and unforeseen ways.

I particularly enjoyed all the manifested visualizations, herbal and energetic healing, as well as the key roles played by bees and crystals. Since I have personally made a decision to use magickal self-defense rather than violence should the SHTF, I enjoyed reading about various techniques -- many of which I recognized as real, not fiction. In the acknowledgments, Starhawk confirms how thoroughly she researched this book, including Native teachings, along with actual songs, chants, techniques and rituals.

If you've ever wondered, "What would I do if society collapsed on multiple levels at once? Does it need to be `every man for himself,' or can (must) we find ways to work together in community? Would we really be stronger together than apart? What does magick have to do with a fully functioning human, and how do I access multi-generational healing?" then "The Fifth Sacred Thing" deserves a place on your bookshelf. You will want to read it again and again, tracking your own growth as you face its challenges. If, on the other hand, you prefer to rest in the hazy halls of denial and wish to cling to the patriarchal status quo, then drop this book like a hot potato! You cannot engage "The Fifth Sacred Thing" and remain unchanged.

Amazon.com Review
"Good night, Gorilla," says the weary watchman as he walks by the gorilla cage on his nightly rounds at the zoo. The gorilla answers by quietly pickpocketing the guard's keys, stealthily trailing him, and unlocking the cages of every animal the oblivious fellow bids goodnight to. Looking much like an exhausted father, the uniformed guard traipses home toward his cottage, while the lonely zoo animals softly parade behind him. The animals manage to slip into his bedroom and nestle unnoticed near his sleepy wife--until the bold little gorilla goes so far as to snuggle up beside her as she turns out the light. Author and illustrator Peggy Rathmann (creator of the Caldecott-winning Officer Buckle and Gloria) relies more on the nuances of her jewel-toned pictures than on words to pace this giggly bedtime story, making it perfect for observant preschoolers. In one inky-black spread, Rathmann lets only the shocked, wide-open eyes of the guard's wife tell us that the gorilla has been detected! Tiny details such as the faithful, banana-toting mouse and sky-bound pink balloon that appear in each picture keep this book fresh, magical, and fun--even after countless bedtime readings. (Baby to preschool) --Gail Hudson

From Publishers Weekly
Universally understandable subject matter and a narrative conveyed almost entirely through pictures mark this as an ideal title for beginners. A zookeeper makes his nightly rounds, bidding good night to a gorilla, a lion, a giraffe and so on. He doesn't know that the gorilla has procured his keys and is unlocking each animal's cage; a jungly crowd files quietly behind the keeper as he walks home and crawls into bed. When his wife says, "Good night, dear," seven voices reply, "Good night," and it's up to the missus to return the mischievous menagerie. Although Rathmann's illustrations lack the artistic ingenuity she displayed in Ruby the Copycat and Bootsie Barker Bites , the author/artist connects with her audience on several levels. Children can identify with the animals, who have toys in their cages (the elephant has a plush Babar) and resist being left alone in their "rooms" all night; they will also enjoy some minor subplots. Some details prove questionable (for example, one overdrawn visage of Mrs. Zookeeper seems blurry, particularly because she's rendered with a few simple lines elsewhere), yet these considerations take a back seat to Rathmann's comic exuberance. Ages 3-6.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1-A mischievous little gorilla lifts the zoo keeper's keys on the first page of this sparely worded picture book. The brightly colored illustrations basically tell the entertaining story as the gorilla tags along behind the man, gleefully freeing all of the other animals, who then follow him single file into his neat little house. It is his unruffled wife who, without disturbing her sleepy husband, calmly returns the creatures to their cages. Even she, however, does not notice the wily gorilla, who, still in possession of the keys, returns to the house, slips into the big bed, and curls up contentedly between the people for the night. A clever, comforting bedtime story.

Order the Hardcover Version instead of the Board Book Version
By John
I recommend hardcover version instead of the board book. The pictures are cut off on the board book because it is so small (about the size of my hand). The illustrations are what make this book so great. If you and your child like the book, I suggest the full hardcover version. The difference in the cost is not worth the savings.

Suggest paper edition over board book.

Pictures are cut off on the board book. The illustrations are what make this book so great. If your kid likes the book, I suggest the original paper edition.

Vibrant Images but Cropped
By Michael DeCato
This is a very nice board book. The colors are vastly brighter than the paper edition and it's perfect for babies and toddlers that have a tendency to tear pages. My only issue with this edition is that the images are not scaled down to fit the reduced size of the book from the original. It is as though they used the same size images from the original copy (which is about 20% to 30% larger than this book) and they cropped them. This doesn't completely take away from book, though, and there is still enough of the images for the story. I just wish it was a bit bigger to get the full images.

-1 star for the cropped images, but otherwise this is a great edition of this book.
