Presented in an engaging lecture-style format, this combined textbook-anthology leads students through a series of discussions on the basic issues and ideas in philosophy. The lectures are supported by related readings from historically important sources. Most of the lectures also contain boxed material highlighting key concepts or related topics. The discussions emphasize the logic of philosophical arguments--and in particular, how they relate to the content of scientific theories such as evolution. While the author's lecture approach lends this book a natural flow and sense of immediacy, it comprises a fully integrated textbook with all of the traditional organizational and pedagogical features, including chapter summaries, marginal notes, boxed inserts, discussion questions, problems, test questions, a glossary, and bibliography.

Preface

The philosophical problems investigated in this book concern fundamental facts about our place in the universe. Many of us were brought up to believe that God exists, that there is a real difference between right and wrong, that we can freely choose what sort of lives to lead, and that it is possible for us to gain knowledge of the world we inhabit. A major goal of philosophy is to discover whether these opinions can be rationally defended or are just comfortable illusions.

Core Questions in Philosophy emphasizes the idea that philosophy is a subject devoted to evaluating arguments and constructing theories. This is not the same as describing the history of what various philosophers have thought. Although I discuss historical texts, I do so because they are rich sources of ideas pertinent to answering philosophical questions. The point is not to say solemn and respectful words about worthy figures now dead, but to engage them in dialogue—to grapple with the theories they have proposed, to criticize these theories, even to improve upon them.

Besides proposing answers to philosophical questions, I also try to make clear which questions I have not answered. I hope that the reader will approach what I say the way I have approached the philosophical texts I discuss. This is a book to argue with, to dissect. It isn't my goal to have the reader accept without question the conclusions I reach.

This work is a combination textbook with readings. The text part (which I call "Lectures") is followed by a group of related readings (drawn from Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, Anselm, Descartes, Hume, Kant, Mill, and others). The lectures flow together, so that the main areas covered—philosophy of religion, epistemology, philosophy of mind, and ethics—are connected to each other to make a coherent whole.

The lectures are intended to be launching pads from which readers can pursue issues on their own. I believe students are best able to think about philosophy if they first are provided with some basic tools and concepts. It is the purpose of the lectures to provide these core ideas.

Following the lectures in Parts II through V, there are a number of readings; these are drawn mainly from historical texts, although a few are by contemporary philosophers. The lectures often discuss these readings, but the area of overlap is far from total. Many lectures contain material that isn't touched on in any reading; and the readings raise a wealth of issues that the lectures don't address. The lectures are intended to stand on their own as well as to provide points of entry into the readings.

Each lecture is followed by review questions and by problems for further thought. These should help readers to consolidate their understanding of what I have said and to think creatively about related problems. The lectures often contain material in "boxes"; these boxes provide a nutshell restatement of a main idea or a brief discussion of a related matter that may interest the reader. A list of the boxes immediately follows the table of contents. Each main part of the text includes suggestions for further reading. And there is a glossary at the end of the book that provides simple definitions of the main concepts used.

Besides covering a number of traditional topics, this book also takes up some contemporary theories and problems, both from philosophy and from other disciplines. Creationism and evolutionary theory are hotly debated now. The issues they raise are continuous with a tradition of argument in philosophy of religion that goes back (at least) to Aquinas, Hume, and Paley. The relation of mind and body is as old a problem as philosophy engages, but the ideas of Freud and Skinner get a hearing along with those of Descartes. In ethics there has long been a debate as to whether ethical truths are discovered or created. Plato and Sartre are separated by more than 2,000 years, but both speak to this issue. The problem of free will raises the question of whether every event is caused. Here the contribution of modern physics must be brought into contact with a perennial problem of philosophy. Philosophy isn't the same as biology, psychology, or physics, but the problems of philosophy cannot be isolated from the sciences. One aim of this book is to connect philosophical problems with ideas derived from a wider culture.

The etymology of the word philosopher is lover of wisdom. This doesn't guarantee that all philosophers are wise, nor even that each individual philosopher is devoted to the attainment of wisdom. Philosophers should strive for wisdom; whether they do so, and whether they attain it, are separate questions.

Wisdom involves understanding—seeing how things fit together. When the pieces of a puzzle are fitted together, one attains a sense of wholeness. Current philosophy is embedded in a historical tradition of philosophical discourse. It also is connected with problems in the sciences, the other humanities, and the arts. This book aims to give the reader a sense of these multiple connections. Acknowledgments

On the whole, though, I was happy with what I heard, though this didn't mean that I felt that I should leave the book unchanged. Usually (but not always), they will find evidence that I listened to what they said in the way this edition differs from the ones before.

You may not need the newest edition, fellow college student.

If your philosophy course requires the newest edition, you can still probably get by with this. We only read one essay from the new edition that I didn't have, and I was able to read it right after class from a friend's copy. I honestly had my mind opened by this book. I never realized how much Philosopher's put emphasis on trying to decipher the origins of the universe through sensible logic, and even then, there's more debate on the extent to which you can actually know or be certain of facts and ideas. I may have just needed a general education requirement out of the way, but I was pleased.

Excellent book for any college student.

If your taking a philosophy course than this book will most likely be required. I got it in good condition and delivered fast. The textbook had a few wears and tears but nothing serious.

A word of caution about the plant pics

I really enjoy this book, and I think it's packed full of a lot of good information for the beginner aquascaper. However, I've noticed that most of the pictures in the Plant Profiles section are of the plants grown emersed (i.e. above water), which greatly affects the look of the plants. If you want to see more accurate pics of what these plants will look like in your tank, I suggest looking online for pics!

Buy this book before your tank

I wish I had gotten this before I started planting each tank. I would have done some things better. It's not thre most comprehensive book. I have seem similar books (used by my FLS) that cover more plants but it will give you and idea what you should need to plant a successful planted aquarium for you situation. I have a coffee table aquarium. They are very difficult to plant due to light coming from the bottom, algae issues and needing to be it a cooler room temperature to avoid water condensing on the table top. Thanks to this book I know I should use Java Ferns and Crinum Thaianum (which are amphibious so they will remove waste efficiently and fill the top surface of the water nicely) since neither require a substrate (actually prefer not to be in one) and can do OK in only low moderate light.

This is a very informative book with great photos. It provides a lot of information that is understandable for hobbyists new or experienced with planted aquariums. My husband and I both refer to this book for our home tanks and at our jobs at a family owned fish store.

Witty tour of key (and not so key) economic indicators

You know you are dealing with a book that's overstating its value just a tad when you see this in the introduction: "... we'll show you how the indicators we've chosen can help you see the turns in the economy before they happen. With that prescience you can make changes to your investments ahead of time and avoid the suffering you probably felt during the past couple of years." Now anyone who could actually predict the "turns in the economy" using these indicators -- or any others -- would be reclining on his yacht moored off the south of France, and would be unlikely to divulge his secrets in a mass market paperback. That said, this book is an entertaining read and can serve as a useful reference to anyone who follows the markets or the broader economy.

Simon Constable writes for the Wall Street Journal and hosts their afternoon "NewsHub" recap of the markets. Anyone who follows the NewHub will be familiar with his witty -- actually, kind of snarky -- commentary. He's sort of the Simon Cowell of the Wall Street crowd. His distinctive voice is evident in this book. His co-author, Robert Wright, has written extensively on business history and used to be associated with the Stern School at NYU and the Museum of Financial History in Manhattan's financial district, although he apparently now teaches at a college in South Dakota.

The book consists of 50 short chapters devoted to the indicators. Each chapter has a brief description of the indicator -- usually accompanied by a quote from an investment analysts on the indicator's importance -- a time series graph of the indicator, and a discussion of possible investment opportunities that might occur when the indicator is unusually high or low. Each chapter ends with an "Executive Summary" box that explains when data on the indicator are released, where to go to find the data, what to watch for, and so on. To anyone who follows the financial news even casually, many of the indicators will be familiar, such as automobile sales, durable goods orders, or M2. To most people, though, other indicators are likely to be less familiar, such as book-to-bill ratio, the Baltic dry index, and the Tankan survey. I'm a little skeptical about how useful some of the more obscure indicators will be to the average investor, but they make for interesting reading. The final (tongue-in-cheek) indicator, the "Vixen index," measures how attractive the waitresses are in your local restaurant. The more attractive the waitresses, the worse the labor market, because in a strong labor market these attractive women would be working at better jobs elsewhere.

All-in-all, leaving aside the somewhat overstated claims the authors make for investment strategies based on these indicators, this is a valuable little reference tool and should be, at the very least, a fun read for most personal investors.

A good reference for the information that goes into the stats the government and others release

Excellent tool to learn about the stats that drive the markets. What I did not learn is how the big money uses some of these stats to justify why the market was up or down. The "where have you been the jobs number was negative" as stated by Bloomberg/ CNBC pundits and others .Then two weeks later the market rallies and the jobs number is all but forgotten. Those of us in the business know that unemployment is higher than the jobless numbers indicate or the CPI quote is bogus, yet it is the playbook all follow so we must play the game also. This book is a good reference tool!

Good reference on key indicators to pay attention too as a intermediate to long term investor

Authors give a good introduction to various measures to pay attention to in each are of the GDP calculation. This is a good guide for the novice to intermediate investor that wants to learn more about what to look for and how to possibly use this information in your investment decisions. Should start you on the path to the "art" of forecasting and hopefully prevent being on the wrong side of the business cycle.

British philosopher and editor Law explores 25 of life's Big Questions in a sprightly volume designed to be a "course in thinking philosophically." Categorizing each philosophical "adventure" as Warm-up, Moderate or More Challenging, he addresses queries both grand and eternal ("Does God Exist?" and "Where Did the Universe Come From?" are two of his chapters) and controversial and contemporary ("What's Wrong with Gay Sex?" and "But is it Art?"). Lay readers looking for a comprehensible introduction to critical thinking will benefit from Law's straightforward exposition of each topic; opposing arguments are clearly organized in a tennis match of sorts: Law has two diners, for example, spar over whether eating meat can be morally justified. (Animals eat other animals, one says. But they don't know right from wrong, his companion says. Eating animals comes naturally to us, says the first. But so does violence, says the second. Etc.) In the chapter on morality's supposed dependence on religion, a section titled "An Argument for the Existence of God" is followed by the impressively accessible "Plato's Refutation of the Popular Argument," which is then countered with the "'But God is Good' Reply," and so on. The writing is lively and accessible, thanks to Law's passion for his subject and his creative use of zany conversations between future scientists about the possibility of time travel, for example, and his whimsical examples of strange objects called "fubbyloofers" to demonstrate the difficulty of determining what is art. The best of these essays end inconclusively, encouraging readers to consult the additional resources Law recommends. When Law unabashedly declares his final opinion-"In short, what creationists practice isn't good science-it's bunk"-it has the potential to offend. It detracts, too, from the book's admirable aim to "provide the skills needed to think independently" and "help fortify your courage in making a moral stand."

I'm not a philosphopher...

and I don't play one on TV, either. But I've always had a strong interest in philosophy. I find myself thinking of philosophical issues often, yet I knew very little about it. This book was the perfect introduction!
Often, introdcutions to complex subjects are either dry or too technical to hold the interest of the uninitiated. This book was neither. While introducing a number of key viewpoints, it does it in a way that would hold the interest and educate those with even a passing interest in the subject. It also clearly points the way for future study. I've already purchased a number of the books the author suggests.
From "Does God Exist?" to "The Rational Dentist", author Stephen Law tackles the big philosophical questions asked today. He gives some history on each question, introduces the reader to a few of the philosophers who've written on the subject and then enters into a hypothetical dialog where he explains both sides of the argument. Excellent method, in my humble opinion.
Do I agree with all of his examples? No. Do I agree with all of his conclusions? No! I did read into the book some of what others have said about a bias regarding religion, but it never detracted from the subject. I'm guessing that other reviewers don't like points of view other than their own. When it comes to philosophy (and indeed, as the book points out, any knowledge!), nothing is 'for sure'. Differing points of view are going to be not only the norm, but expected.
I gave the book to my son (who is 23) and he's loving it as well. Couldn't recommend it highly enough. Even if it's your only foray into the subject of philosophy, it's a good pick.

A friendly way to introduce philosophy for beginners

Entertaining and well structured. A good way to present philosophy to beginners in a practical and relatable way. I read it many years ago and lost it, I was happy to now find the electronic version of it. The only reason why I did not give it five stars is because as good as it is, I had a slight problem going through the entire content as a unit, but found myself leaving it unfinished for periods of time. Of course, it may be that the book is not meant to be read from start to end in one sitting, or that my concentration skills were lacking.

One of the best intros to Philosophy I've ever read. It is good for both the young (but verbose) reader, and the older crowd. The book does not pander, but does carry a playful tone throughout, and tackles many heavy subjects (the first chapter examines the question of whether or not god exists).

This book is intended to provide the reader with an understanding of the principles relating to livestock feeding. Numerous changes have occurred since its last publication with respect to scientific knowledge, world politics, international relations, food security, and many other areas. Many need world markets have opened. There is an increasing challenge to improve production efficiency so that livestock products can compete in these new marketing opportunities. Because the cost of feeding normally accounts for the largest single input in a production operation, there is a need for a better understanding of nutrition and feeding for those that are going to be involved in livestock production.

The book provides a brief historical perspective of the development of modern livestock production. The ability to provide a safe, nutritious food supply for the world's population has been the driving force behind the development of modern agriculture in the world, with the well-being of the animals and profitability being major considerations. Many advances in genetics, including the development of transgenic animals, and concern about the environment have impacted livestock producers. It is becoming increasingly important to have a better understanding of the effects that feeding and management of livestock have on livestock production systems and environment.

This book will provide the reader with a basic understanding of the nutrition, livestock production systems, and the utilization of feedstuffs. Species chapters will discuss the management and feeding practices that are unique to those species. Feedstuff characteristics and nutrient guidelines are given for various classes of the species in the Appendix Tables. It is our sincere hope that this book will enable the reader to gain knowledge of the principles and management practices used in livestock feeding.

This text (a slightly older edition) was the required text for my Feeds and Feeding class. This updated version expanded on some topics compared to previous editions. Contents are broken up into four sections: Intro, Feeds for livestock, Livestock species, & Feeding other domesticated species. Part three chapters are: 13)Feeding swine, 14)Feeding Poultry, 15)Feeding dairy cows, 16)Feeding dairy calves & replacements, 17)Feeding the beef cow herd, and 18)Feeding growing-finishing beef cattle. The final section chapters are: 19)Feeding horses, 20)Sheep nutrition, 21)Goats & goat nutrition, 22)Feeding and nutrition of companion & zoological species, and 23)Feeding rabbits.

The chapter on companion & zoological species covers dogs, cats, birds, reptiles & amphibians, & touches briefly on zoological diets. The cat & dog sections have adequate coverage, although there definitely could be more coverage. However the reptile & amphibian and bird sections could use some fleshing out... and I am not aware of a good alternative source for this information. The authors could have went into more depth on the zoological portion seeing as most other books don't even touch on it and there is actually a need for zoo animal nutrition guides, instead of just extrapolation from similar species (yes this works for some species-a zebra and a horse can't have that much of different requirements right? But what about carnivores... where are the recommendations for them?). I do understand that it is hard to include information like this because it largely doesn't exist, but if you want to include information in your text on it, go into a bit more depth... are the extrapolations that zoo nutritionists do based on body weight? age? reproductive status? these would be ideal points to cover since this book gets used by a lot of aspiring veterinary/zoo/biological science students. Hopefully in future editions, the authors will try to get experts to help "flesh out" the above discussed sections to fill the need since most of the other nutrition texts don't even cover some of the topics yet.

Overall this book is a great resource and I highly recommend it to livestock producers, dog & cat owners, undergraduate students in animal or biological sciences, and anyone looking for solid information on animal nutrition as the majority of the principles apply to all species. For someone looking for additional nutrition references I also recommend Animal Feeding and Nutrition. Between these two books, most of the small gaps in the information get covered. Both are great references.

Ordered this for a class. The textbook was received within the stated time and in perfect condition. This textbook is written in an easy-to-read way; very simplistic and informative. Will definitely serve as a good reference tool for anyone dealing with animal nutrition. More complex ideas/information is broken down within the text so you can understand quickly what the authors are trying to get across. Includes a lot of tables, graphs, and figures for reference (even for specific species).

What is the opposite of command and control?

The leader, at the helm of an organization, charismatic, visionary, influential, and most definitely in charge of everything, is a bit elusive in this collection of book chapters on educational leadership. John Gardner describes a leader as, "an individual (who) induces a group to pursue objectives held by the leader or shared by the leader and his or her followers" (p. 17), but even this is qualified by a parenthetical "or leadership team." Jerome Murphy negates the notion of the heroic leader, replacing it with the unheroic leader - one who recognizes his/her own weaknesses, listens more than speaks, and lets go in order to take charge. Megan Tschannen-Mann's leader is one who fosters trust, sets the tone, and serves as a model, but emphatically does not order people around. Terence Deal and Kent Peterson's leader is among other things historian, symbol, potter, poet, and actor, but definitely not controller. Robert Starratt's leader has "presence," bringing him or herself fully and authentically into interactions with others, and being "wide awake to what's in front of" him or her (p. 56). Jack Welch this is not.

Permeating almost every chapter of this book is a different conception of leadership, one that takes the emphasis off one heroic individual, and distributes leadership throughout the organization. If leaders exist, they are, according to Thomas Sergiovanni, to be "leaders of leaders" (p. 376). "It's just not possible any longer," writes Peter Senge, "to "figure it out" from the top, and have everyone else following the orders of the "grand strategist" (p. 4). An underlying theme, made explicit in Margaret Grogan and Charol Shakeshaft's chapter, is that the appropriate form of leadership in educational settings is (and you can agree or disagree with this) female in character: relationships are webs, not pyramids; power is exercised "with" and not "over." Sergiovanni agrees, contending that the female style is more democratic, participatory, and inclusive than the male style.

Much of the content of this reader is an exploration, with examples and cases from education (most obviously K-12) of this distributed, participatory form of leadership. There are riches here if you have the patience to wade through the 500+ pages and find them. For example, in Roland Barth's chapter on risk, he argues that individuals must be allowed to fail if they are to learn: "If you take away a person's right to fail, you take away her right to succeed" (p. 291). And Stephen Fink & Anneke Markholt's discussion of expertise in teaching - and in particular the inadequate job we've done of defining it - is enlightening. Starratt's chapter on presence - I wasn't holding out too much hope for the value of this one - turns out to be inspiring.

If you reflect on the vision of leadership in education presented here, you may ask what it is about education (as opposed to business or the military, for example) that calls for this form of leadership. And you may also wonder, with increasing bureaucratic control over much of education at all levels, whether participatory leadership, which seeks to empower the many in an organization, isn't at odds with the directives coming down from the institutional or corporate administration, or school district. In the end, though, nobody's leading if there isn't buy-in, and essentially that's perhaps the biggest theme of this book, and its strength. Its weakness is a lack of much discussion of crisis leadership, which, no matter what the organization, requires a more directive style. Given the diversity of educational contexts, I doubt you'll read it from cover to cover, but it is worth dipping into for the parts that speak to you.

Too many errors for an established teaching tool

We had to purchase this and other Prep U codes for our RN program. All of them have mistakes. Granted, not a lot of mistakes but too many for a teaching program. I am in my second semester and I have found at least 20 mistakes so far. Our teachers say to let them know and they will notify LWW but it isn't my job to do their editing. Mistakes are things like marking the answer as incorrect and then in the explanation contradicting that (most common); typos in the questions and answers; part of the question listed as an answer and one answer split into 2 answers ( i.e. the answer to a) the question is: b) five c) sev d) en e) nine). All in all, it is frustrating to use at times but the abiltiy to learn is there.

Helped me pass med surg!

This is a wonderful product for anyone interested in nursing. I can definitely say this product helped me pass my med surg class without a doubt. It gives you different questions to answer that correlate with the different chapters of the book. Its great because you can choose which chapters you want to work on and how many questions you want to answer so you can do a quick review or spend hours practicing. It also keeps track of your questions so you even know which ones are your weakest sections. For those of you who know nursing questions… this is a great way to practice them!

Best price I found.

This product was required for school. Best price I was able to find for this product and arrived same day! It helps prep for exams and the website is easy to use. I am giving 3 stars only because it is so expensive and I only use it to take practice quizzes (other features don't seem to be as helpful for me).
