Dieters must have
By Lucy
I didn't know anything about counting calories. Using online calculator I have found that it is extremely effective to count calories. My problem was I didn't know how many calories food had in it. I thought I was eating healthy but found I always ate to many hidden calories "the extras". So this book goes with me everywhere. It made me aware of high calorie food and I've lost 30 pounds easily. Using this as I reference my eating 5 times a day doesn't make me gain but lose since I am better educated. Get it you won't be sorry!

Too much garbage
By AvidReviewer3739
I have to agree with the other few reviewers & say that I too think this book has got wayyyyy too much garbage in it!! I mean... I can't help but wonder doesn't ANY one cook their OWN food nowadays??? -Makes it hard to find just simple things.

I too, just want a plain, whole food calorie counter book. IS there such a thing?? If there is, pleeeease, do let me in on it!! ;-)

A Junk Food Count Book!
By muchafun
First of all, it's totally filled with pages and pages of fast food. Doesn't anyone cook anymore? And then the book totally passes over any alcohol. Wine and beer are in there, as well as mixers to use with alcohol, but no alcohol at all! Cutting back on alcohol is an easy way to lose weight, why would the author eliminate it and yet include wine and beer?? Very disappointed with this book; it's going back or in the trash!

I still remember...
By "rosieluthien"
I still remember this book from when I used to check it out of the public library and I had been looking for it since. The pictures are nice. It gives a lot of information on the stars and physical details about them. I'm still reading it but you have to keep in mind that these reviews were done before the era of VHS or DVD's so the perspective or opinion might not be fresh.

Essentials of Corporate Finance, by Stephen A. Ross, Randolph Westerfield, Bradford D. Jordan

Essentials of Corporate Finance, 6/e by Ross, Westerfield, and Jordan is written to convey the most important concepts and principles of corporate finance at a level that is approachable for a wide audience. The authors retain their modern approach to finance, but have distilled the subject down to the essential topics in 18 chapters. They believe that understanding the “why” is just as important, if not more so, than understanding the “how,” especially in an introductory course. Three basic themes emerge as their central focus:
1. An emphasis on intuition—separate and explain the principles at work on a common sense, intuitive level before launching into specifics. Underlying ideas are discussed first in general terms, then followed by specific examples that illustrate in more concrete terms how a financial manager might proceed in a given situation.
2. A unified valuation approach—Net Present Value is treated as the basic concept underlying corporate finance. Every subject the authors cover is firmly rooted in valuation, and care is taken to explain how decisions have valuation effects.
3. A managerial focus—Students learn that financial management concerns management. The role of financial manager as decision maker is emphasized and they stress the need for managerial input and judgment.

corporate finance book
By Christine
I ordered this book for my finance class. I recieved the book in an excellent condition and delivery time was very reasonable. I also got an excellent deal on the book since it is an older version , but the teacher is okay using an older version since there weren't a lot of changes between the new edition and the old one. This is the sixth week of classes and I am cvery happy with the book.

Review

"This book is a wonderful, no nonsense guide to audio mixing for beginners and advanced mixing engineers and producers. The accompanying DVD holds hundreds of audio examples that add an invaluable depth to the reading. Let's face it, you can't just write about audio mixing, you must provide examples and this book delivers tons of them. This type of book has long been missing from the arsenal of books about audio mixing and production. Most books are either too detailed with no real appeal to readers, or too specific and within a year or two would be considered terribly outdated. However, Audio mixing covers some universal concepts in a way that would make it relevant through the years.I highly recommend this book to any aspiring or working mixing engineer/producer. I believe the straightforward writing style (while not always with the best grammar), the range of topics covered and the all revealing audio examples make this book a great choice."--Yuvalgerstein.com

This is the book to own.....
By Smurf
As a home studio owner and pro musician of 40 years I am always on the lookout for that "next bit of info" that will push me to yet again improve...and this book was it. I have looked at this book for month's and thought..."Man, is it REALLY worth the $$?"

Now, as I look at my bookshelf full of "Mixing & Mastering & Studio Tips & Tricks" books, I can honestly say that this is the best book I have bought over the years.....period. Read what everyone else has wrote here in their reviews, and you got the gist of it, this book is the bomb!

Even if you "know it all", I recommend this book for 3 chapters, Compression, Reverb, and Gates-Expanders. Written so that ANYONE can understand it, but deep enough to make us old timers go "WHOA..." And the DVD, full of example audio clips and 4 full mixes that are tore apart at the end of the book, just drive the information home.

All of the reviews are correct(including the "eglash" in places), if you are serious about your Sound and Audio in general, this is the book to own. If you REALLY want to understand what the Ratio control does, on anything that uses one, this is the book to own. If you really want to improve your Engineering & Mixing Skills, this is the book to own. If you are using a computer to do audio, this is the book to own. If you use Cubase, Music Studio, Pro Tools, Audacity, or the Kristal Audio Engine, this is the book to own. It is worth every penny!

Can you tell I like the book?! I am on my 2nd read thru!

Not what I expected - Quantity over Quality.
By Kendal A. Osborne
Alright, I'll grant the author the fact that there is a TON of information in here. If you've never mixed before then this book has a ton of information for the newbie. If you HAVE mixed before, and you're wanting to learn more, the only proof you need is the mixes on the demo DVD - they're not that great. It's like three mediocre pop dance songs and a junky rock tune. I think it's a classic case of quantity over quality.

This book covers a lot of things, some more in depth than others. I did like the monitoring chapter and the EQ chapter. Everything else was hit or miss for me. Some were more than miss - I felt like they didn't even swing.

A lot of the information in there is superfluous and redundant. I feel like in every single paragraph the author will state something and then retract it. For example, something like "compressors are used to control attacks of instruments. However, sometimes you don't want to control the attack. However, sometimes you do." This is not a direct quote, but I feel like literally every chapter a similar statement is made like this about ten times.

As a mixer, I also feel like a lot of the information is just false - he talks about balancing levels with a compressor and setting the attack to all the way fast, which is definitely NOT what is done most of the time. His methods on setting up a compressor I feel are incorrect, and I feel the graphs and descriptions about so many of these things are just straight up confusing.

It's very obvious to me this is a digital mixer that is used to digital products. I don't think there is much real world experience with analog gear or anything. There are many broad statements that the author assumes, which is dangerous, because many of these things aren't true in all cases.

I have no idea who this author is, what they have done, and if they actually know what they're doing. From the sound of the mixes on the included DVD, I was pretty upset that this book cost as much as it did - I was not impressed with the mixes. I'd much rather read Bobby Owsinski's "Mixing Engineers Handbook," which has real information from a seasoned pro from the industry, as well as interviews with the best of the best mixers from around the globe.

Never learned so much about mixing
By Sadek S
very simple : unless you are very happy with your mixes, this book is a must have.
Even better than what I expected. This book is very complete and really makes mixes better.

This book talks really seriously and precisely about mixing. I've catched advice that I now use all the time. A few examples :
Compressing : I've been using compressors for 5 years and I've read a lot about compressors and to be honest, this is the first time I understand how a compressor works ... The "usual" explanation is wrong.
Now when I open a compressor window, I know why and how I'll use it
Reverbs : I didn't know that gating the reverb was the way to have that "big" sound without the "amateur" flush we always hear on home-studio mixes; this is the way to have very audible but short reverbs without distorsion.
Equalization : I have never used a high-pass filter that way ... now I really "aggressively" clear the bottom end on most guitars, vocals ans so on ... and my bass and kick just stick out the mix.

I am still working with this book. It is a book I'll never get rid of.
a master piece.

The Staff of Serapis (Heroes of Olympus, The), by Rick Riordan

In this adventure, Annabeth encounters more oddities in the subway than usual, including a two-headed monster and a younger blond girl who reminds her a little of herself. This is the story fans have asked for, in which Annabeth Chase teams up with Sadie Kane. The demigod daughter of Athena and the young magician from Brooklyn House take on a larger-than-life foe from the ancient world. Perhaps even more disturbing than the power-hungry god they encounter is the revelation that he is being controlled by someone—someone all too familiar to Sadie.
As a special bonus, the first chapter of THE BLOOD OF OLYMPUS, the final book in the Heroes of Olympus series, is included.

Why are you Surprised this ROCKED?!
By OpheliasOwn
When Carter and Percy came together to fight a monster, we thought it was a fluke. A fabulous fluke, mind you, but a fluke nonetheless. Now that Sadie and Annabeth have had to come together to fight a monster, the writing on the wall is clear. Something is going on to bring the Greek and the Egyptian worlds together, and it is scary. IN The Staff of Serapis by Rick Riordan, two beloved series connect once again in magic-wielding, monster fighting goodness.

Annabeth can't catch a break. Just when she thinks things will be normal for a moment, a monster shows up. But something is wrong with this monster. Not that it has two very different heads and seems to be struggling to work together despite being connected. Nope. It is running away from her! Monsters don't run away from demigods! When she decides to follow it, she is surprised by something even stranger- a girl who can see the monster too!

OK. I am really hoping all these short stories are leading up to a final Egyptian, Greek Cross-over series by Riordan. Seriously, dude. Don't hold out on us. We need the Kane's and the demigods together in one magnificent series, and we need it now! I don't even need to review this fabulous little short, because we all knew it was going to be awesome. But still, Rick, bro. Please? Give us what we want! Kanes meet demigods! And we want it NOW!

Amazing crossover novella!!
By Lili Lost in a Book
In The Staff of Serapis, we have Annabeth who is just minding her business in downtown NY, when all of a sudden she see a monster... that ignores her? And to top it off she has never seen anything like it! So she follows said monster and runs into a feisty British girl (Sadie!) who is also hunting a devious little creature. Without giving too much away, Annabeth and Sadie team up to fight this monster and something much bigger that they did not expect... they need to stop it before it destroys the world. But then again, these seems to be their normal ;)

I LOVED the novella, of course! It was a brilliant mix of Greek/Egyptian mythology and the Percy Jackson series/Kane Chronicles into one story! Some Big Big Things went down in this short story, so I was surprised that it was just a novella. But Sadie and Annabeth handled things amazingly!

Speaking of the Dream Team, Annabeth is so good at distracting enemies just by talking to them and throwing them off... she is such a clever girl! She is the daughter of Athena for a reason ;) And Sadie was sassy, as always. I really missed her! I mean, the Kane Chronicles has been over for a while now, so it was great to see her again :)

I loved that there were so many references to past books, making me go, "Ah, yes. I remember that." The Big Mother thing from The Mark of Athena , for example, that was so funny! And Rachel Dare, the oracle, throwing a blue brush at the Titan Kronos's eye... Oh, good times :) And Sadie and Annabeth telling each other about their lives... I was giddy with excitement to see their reaction! I mean, two of my favorite series together in one story? How freakin' great is that?!

This novella was made of pure awesomeness! It was a lot of fun, with so much humor, and mythology that was actually new to me. I mean, Serapis? I have never heard of him! But using him in this novella was SO clever! I really loved learning about this deity and the mythology of his creation. So cool! And I hear there's going to be another novella with Pery, Annabeth, Carter, and Sadie! So exciting! I really cant wait! And if you have not read the Percy Jackson, Heroes of Olympus, or the Kane Chronicles series, well I highly recommend them!!

We have the first two chapters of the next series: Demigods & Magicians, Greeks & Egyptians....
By David C. Young
I was sadly looking forward to "Blood of Olympus", Riordan's second demigod series. Percy Jackson and Anabeth are splendid characters. It was good to see them continue. It looked as if he might develop Nico into a fuller character, too. And Riordan added several good ones in this series -- Hazel, Piper, Jason, Leo.... I could go on & on. It really was as satisfying as the first PJ series -- nothing stale about it! And since follow-up series are rarely as good as the first, that was quite an accomplishment.

Bravo Riordan!

But my looking forward to "Blood of Olympus" was still sad: I figured this was the end-of-the-line. I'd be saying "good-bye" to some really fun "people" and their world

Now, I really don't think so.

Son of Sobek was a good tale, but not much more than that. For me, it hinted, but didn't promise. And it didn't strongly draw me in. It was fun having Percy & Carter together. But beyond setting up a way to get in touch with one another, I wasn't sure if it was anything more than a throw-off. Or maybe a trial balloon. Riordan's Sobek story didn't seem to commit itself to something further.

Staff of Serapis is on another level entirely. Riordan has tied it in much more firmly both to Kane Chronicles as well as to Heroes of Olympus. (In fact it gives peeks into Heroes' ending -- and I'm not talking, here, about the chapter from Blood of Olympus.) And it ties the two series together time-wise. The new series will start hard on the heels of the ending of both Heroes & Chronicles.

So for me, the Kanes & the PJ folks are continuing for at least one more series. Goody! At least five books more!

Even better, this isn't Riordan just plodding into somewhat tired and overdone territory. His writing in Staff of Serapis is fresh, some of his best: snarky, fast-paced, crisply drawn settings, densely woven with new kinds of action & fresh ideas.

I'm going out on a limb. Riordan has been setting out chapters as teasers for some time. And I think we have two more here, the first two of a series he hasn't yet announced. There are WAY too many fresh ideas for him not to develop them further. He's clearly put a lot of thought into this, and he's done it without making that thought heavy-handed. Staff of Serapis really draws you in, and leaves you wanting more. Yes, Ptolemy Egypt did combine Greek & Egyptian. So the cross-over was already there, historically. It needed only Riordan to pick it up, which he's done, here, with a vengeance!

The Revolving Door of Life (44 Scotland Street Series), by Alexander McCall Smith

Excitement abounds when the revolving door of life brings fresh faces and hilarious new developments to the residents of 44 Scotland Street.

Things are looking up for seven-year-old Bertie Pollock. The arrival of his spirited grandmother and the absence of his meddlesome mother—who is currently running a book club in a Bedouin harem (don’t ask)—bring unforeseen blessings: no psychotherapy, no Italian lessons, and no yoga classes. Meanwhile, surprises await Scotland Street’s grown-ups. Matthew makes a discovery that could be a major windfall for his family, but also presents a worrisome dilemma. Pat learns a secret about her father’s fiancée that may shake up her family, unless she can convince the perpetually narcissistic Bruce to help her out. And the Duke of Johannesburg finds himself in sudden need of an explanation—and an escape route—when accosted by a determined guest at a soirée. From the cunning schemes of the Association of Scottish Nudists to the myriad expressive possibilities of the word “aye,” Alexander McCall Smith guides us through the risks and rewards of friendship, love, and family with his usual inimitable wit and irresistible charm.

1. Moving Can Be Good For You

Matthew had read somewhere—in one of those hoary lists with which newspapers and magazines fill their columns on quiet days—that moving house was one of the most stressful of life’s experiences—even if not quite as disturbing as being the victim of an armed robbery or being elected president, nemine contradicente, of an unstable South American republic. Matthew faced no such threats, of course, but he nevertheless found the prospect of leaving India Street for the sylvan surroundings of Nine Mile Burn extremely worrying. And it made no difference that Nine Mile Burn was, as the name suggested, only nine miles from the centre of Edinburgh.

“What really worries me,” he confessed to Elspeth, “is the whole business of selling India Street. What if nobody wants to buy this flat? What then?”

He looked at her with unconcealed anxiety: he could imagine what it was like not to be able to sell one’s house. He had recently been at a party at which somebody had whispered pityingly of another guest: “He can’t sell his flat, you know.” He had looked across the room at the poor unfortunate of whom the remark was made and had seen a hodden-doon, depressed figure, visibly bent under the burden of unshiftable equity. That, he decided, was how people who couldn’t sell their house looked—shadowy figures, wraiths, as dejected and without hope as the damned in Dante’s Inferno, haunted by the absence of offers for an unmoveable property. He had shuddered at the thought and reflected on his good fortune at not being in that position himself. Yet here he was deliberately courting it . . .

Elspeth’s attitude was more sanguine. She had been unruffled by their previous moves—from India Street to Moray Place, and then back again to India Street. The prospect of another flit—a Scots word that implies an attempt to evade the clutches of creditors suggests, misleadingly, that moving is an airy, inconsequential thing—did not seem to trouble her, and she had no concerns about the sale of the flat. “But of course somebody will want to buy it,” she reassured him. “Why wouldn’t they? It’s one of the nicest flats in the street. It’s got plenty of room and bags of light. Who wouldn’t want to live in the middle of the Edinburgh New Town?”

Matthew frowned. “The New Town isn’t for everybody,” he said. “Not everybody finds the Georgian aesthetic pleasing.” He paused as he tried to think of a single person he knew of whom this was true. “There are plenty of people these days who are suburban rather than urban. People who like to have . . .” He paused for thought. He knew nobody like this, but they had to exist. “Who like to have garages. Homo suburbiensis. Morningside man, who is a bit like Essex man but just a touch . . .”

“Superior?”

“You said it; I didn’t.”

Elspeth smiled. “You shouldn’t worry so much, Matt, darlingest. And so what if we don’t sell it? We can afford the other place anyway.”

Matthew winced. “If I dip into capital,” he said.

Elspeth shrugged. “But isn’t money for spending? And surely there’s enough there to be dipped into.”

Matthew knew that she was right; at the last valuation, his portfolio of shares in the astute care of the Adam Bank had shot up and he could have bought the new house several times over if necessary. But Matthew had been imbued by his father with exactly that sense of caution that had created the fund in the first place, and the idea of selling shares in any but the direst of emergencies was anathema to him.

In general, Elspeth did not look too closely at Matthew’s financial affairs. She had never been much interested in money, and very rarely spent any on anything but family essentials and the occasional outfit or pair of shoes. She was nonetheless aware of their good fortune and of the fact that thanks to the generosity of Matthew’s businessman father they were spared the financial anxieties that affected most people. Her capacity for moral imagination, though, was such that she could understand the distorting effect that poverty had on any life, and she had never been, nor ever would become, indifferent to the lot of those—perhaps a majority of the population of Scotland—who were left with relatively little disposable income after the payment of monthly bills. This attitude was shared by Matthew, with the result that they were tactful about their situation—and generous too, when generosity was required.

The farmhouse near Nine Mile Burn had not been cheap. Although it was far enough from Edinburgh to avoid the high prices of the capital, it was close enough to be more expensive than houses in West Linton, a village that lay only a few miles further down the road. Their house, which they had agreed to buy from no less a person than the Duke of Johannesburg, who lived at Single Malt House not far away, had been valued at seven hundred thousand pounds. For that they got six bedrooms in the main house—along with a study, a gun room (Matthew did not have a gun, of course), and a drawing room with a good view of both the Lammermuir and Moorfoot Hills to the south and east; a tractor shed, a byre, and six acres of ground.

The Duke had been pleased that Matthew was the purchaser; they had met on several occasions before, although the Duke seemed to have only the vaguest idea of who Matthew was. Matthew’s quiet demeanour, however, had been enough to endear him to the Duke.

“I must say,” the Duke had remarked to a friend, “it’s a great relief to have found somebody who’s not in the slightest bit shouty. You know what I mean? Those shouty people one meets these days—all very full of themselves and brash. We used to have very few of them in Scotland, you know; now they’re on the rise, it seems.”

The friend knew exactly what the Duke meant. “Nouveau riche,” he said. “They’re flashy—they throw their money around.”

The Duke nodded. “Whereas I’m nouveau pauvre. I’ve got barely a sou these days, you know—not that I ever had very much.”

“And you a duke,” said the friend. “Fancy that!”

“Well, a sort of duke,” conceded the Duke. “I’m not in any of the stud books, you know: Debrett’s and so on. Or I’m in one of them—just—but I gather it’s not a very reliable one. It was rather expensive to get in; you had to buy sixty copies, as I recall, and I think quite a number of people in it are a bit on the ropey side. In fact, all of them are, I believe.”

“People take you at your own evaluation, I’ve always thought,” said the friend. “Behave like a duke and they’ll swallow it.”

“True,” said the Duke. “But frankly, that’s a bit difficult for me, old man. I’m not quite sure what the form is when it comes to being a pukka duke.”

“Take a look at some of the people who are what they claim to be,” advised the friend. “Watch the way they stand; the way they walk. They’re very sure-footed, I’m told. And they look down at the ground a lot.”

“That’s because they own it,” said the Duke. “Doesn’t apply to me—or not very much. I’ve got fifty-eight acres in Midlothian and forty-one up in Lochaber, but most of it is pretty scrubby. Lots of broom and rhododendrons.”

The friend looked thoughtful. “No, you’re not quite the real thing, I suppose. And then there’s always the risk that the Lord Lyon will catch up with you.”

The mention of the Lord Lyon made the Duke blanch. This was the King of Arms, the official who supervised all matters of heraldry and succession in Scotland. He had extensive legal powers and could prosecute people for the unauthorised use of coats of arms and the like.

“Do you think Lyon would ever bother about me?” asked the Duke nervously.

His friend looked out of the window. “You never know,” he said. “But I shouldn’t like to be in your shoes if he did.”

It was not the sort of thing a friend should say—or at least not the sort of thing that a reassuring friend should say.

2. Distressed Furniture

The Duke of Johannesburg proved to be a most considerate seller, more than prepared to include all the contents of the house in the sale without adding anything to the purchase price.

“We haven’t lived in the place for years,” he said. “And recently we let it out, of course. But all the stuff is ours, and some of it is actually quite good, even if it’s a bit distressed, as the antique dealers say. Mind you, distressed is not quite strong enough for some of my furniture. My furniture has moved beyond being distressed. Terminal might be more accurate. I can just imagine the auction catalogues—can’t you?—‘a table in terminal condition’ and so on. Hah!”

Matthew was keen to keep as much of the Duke’s furniture as possible, but Elspeth had other ideas. “It’s terrible old rubbish,” she said. “Look at this.” She referred to the inventory that the Duke’s agent had prepared. “A charming William IV library table with only two legs, but otherwise sound.”

“Oh, I saw that one,” said Matthew. “It had a lovely green leather top.”

“That’s as may be,” Elspeth retorted, “but what’s the use of a table with two legs? Or . . .” And here she pointed to another inventory item. “A glass-fronted bookcase, circa 1860; no glass.”

She looked up at Matthew. “What is the point, may I ask, of having a glass-fronted bookcase with no glass in the front? In fact, one might even go so far as to say that it’s an impossibility. A glass-fronted bookcase with no glass is simply not a glass-fronted bookcase.”

“Perhaps,” said Matthew. “If you’re intent on being pedantic.”

They normally did not argue with one another, but even the most equable of couples may be expected to fall out over a move. And so Matthew decided at a very early stage that he would leave everything up to Elspeth and not dispute any of her decisions. Armed with this authority, Elspeth made all the arrangements, chose the date of departure, and did most of the packing herself. He helped, of course, mostly by taking the triplets around the Botanic Gardens in their three-seated pushchair. This inevitably brought a response from passersby—looks that ranged from amusement to sympathy and sometimes on to disapproval.

“Three!” remarked one elderly woman as Matthew and the triplets passed her on the way to the greenhouse. “My, you must have been insatiable!”

Matthew was ready to let this remark pass with a polite nod of his head, but then its implications dawned on him. Did she really think that? he asked himself.

“Excuse me,” he said, “but I wonder what you mean by what you’ve just said.”

The woman blushed. “Oh . . . oh, I don’t really know. It’s just that it must take a lot of energy to create triplets. Not every man . . . Oh dear, I’m not sure that I know what I meant.”

And then there was the visiting American woman who asked the triplets’ names when they were waiting together for a pedestrian light in Stockbridge. “Dear little things,” she said. “They’re all boys, aren’t they? What are they called?”

“Tobermory, Rognvald and Fergus,” answered the proud father.

“What wonderful Scottish names!” enthused the visitor. “Which is Tobermory?”

Matthew hesitated. The truth was that he did not know, as although Elspeth claimed to be able to differentiate between the three boys, he had no idea. But a father could hardly confess to being uncertain as to the identity of his own sons, and so he pointed at random to one of the boys. “Him,” he said.

The woman bent forward to look more closely. “We went to Tobermory last week,” she said. “We were visiting Iona and afterwards we called in at Tobermory—a lovely place . . .” Her voice trailed away. “He’s wearing his brother’s jumper, I see. It has Fergus knitted across the front.”

Matthew waved airily. “They share their clothes,” he said airily. “And of course they’re far too young to dress themselves, or to care what they’re wearing, for that matter.”

In the last few days before the move, the boys were left in the care of Anna, their Danish au pair, while Matthew and Elspeth made final preparations. A couple of weeks before they were due to move in, the Duke agreed to meet them at the house to hand over the keys—they had already paid the purchase price—and to answer any final queries they might have.

“I shall miss the old place,” he said, as he stood with them in the doorway of the large ground-floor drawing room. “We used to have such marvellous parties here back in the old days. White-tie affairs, you know. The men in Highland dress, of course, and the women in long dresses with tartan sashes. Interminable affairs, some thought, but I always enjoyed them. We used to give breakfast to anybody who was still there at six in the morning, and standing. Sometimes we even had to give them lunch. Frightful, but there we are—it’s very hard to ask guests to leave, you know. Some stayed for weeks.” He paused. “I never really knew how to do it until I read about what Willie Maugham said to Paddy Leigh Fermor after Paddy had for some reason been terribly rude to the old boy when he was staying as a guest at the Villa Mauresque. For some reason Paddy imitated Maugham’s stutter at the dinner table—causing dreadful offence. One doesn’t imitate the host’s stutter in any circumstances. Anyway, Paddy did and so Maugham said to him over coffee that night, ‘I shall have to say goodbye to you at this stage as when I get up tomorrow morning you will already have left.’ ”

The Duke laughed.

“How very tactful,” said Matthew.

“I never met Maugham, of course,” continued the Duke. “He was more my father’s generation. In fact, Pa met him once or twice in Antibes. He said he was an ill-tempered old cove, but there we are. Leigh Fermor shouldn’t have done what he did.”

The Duke gazed fondly over the drawing room. “Yes, those white-tie parties were grand evenings, and people paid attention to what they wore. You can’t just add a white tie to Highland Dress, you know. It all depends where you are. If you’re in Perthshire, for example, you can only wear a white tie with Highland Dress if you were born in the county. In Argyll, if the invitation says white tie—and it does for occasions like the Oban gathering—you wear a jabot, as I’m sure you know.”

Matthew was silent. He knew nothing about any of this and he wondered why nobody had ever taught him about these things that were so important even while being utterly unimportant.

By Carol P.
I love this author and have read just about all of his books, but this one is not his best. In my opinion there was way too much philosophical discussion that went on too long. Instead I would have liked to learn more about the adorable little Bertie and how he was coming to a brighter life thru his Granny. And maybe a little more about Cyril, the capricious little dog with the gold tooth. And there was hardly a mention of Big Lou with her man troubles. I guess I was hoping that the interesting characters of the series would get more time than they did. That being said, I await the next installment of the 44 Scotland Street series. It will be interesting to see if the terrible Irene will get the last word about how to raise two little boys, or if the spirited Granny will win out the day.

Marvelous new book in the series...
By Jill Meyer
Lucky Bertie Pollock. He's just turned seven years old in "The Revolving Door of Life", Alexander McCall Smith's latest novel in his "44 Scotland Street" series. Bertie's mother, Irene - possibly one of the worst mothers in modern literature - has been taken by mistake into a Bedouin harem while visiting the Gulf states. For the first time in his short life, Bertie doesn't have Irene bossing him around and not letting him have any fun at all. He's had to wear pink pants to show his solidarity for gender issues, and he's not allowed to play with boys. All Bertie wants is to play with boys, wear a kilt, and have a Swiss Army knife. Now, maybe he's too young for the knife, but he knows what he wants. Bertie's father - the hapless Stuart married to the awful Irene - can't stand up to her. But while she's "away" in the Middle East, Bertie, his baby brother, and Stuart are under the care of Stuart's mother, Nicola, who has come to Edinburgh to take care of the three guys. Suddenly Bertie gets a kilt, pizza, and boy friends to play with. But can it last?

Bertie and his family are just two of the many characters in Smith's Edinburgh stories. A bit like American author Armistead Maupin's "Tales of the City" series, which center around the eccentric occupants of an apartment building in San Francisco, Smith's books also feature a cast of characters. A bit less eccentric than Maupin's crew, Smith's characters are a charming lot of artists and dealers, coffee shop owners, dogs, a Duke-who-possibly-isn't-REALLY-a-duke, and, of course, Bertie Pollock and the dreadful Irene. This latest book - the 10th in the Scotland series - is less plot-centric and more character-centered. Oh, things happen but they are relatively minor things, and the reader concentrates more on the characters.

One of the best things about series books is the chance to return to old friends and catch up on their lives. This is only the second Smith book I've read but I'm surely returning for #11! I want to know what happens to Bertie, and all the others I've become enamoured with in only two books.
