Review

(Dave Ramsey on the back cover for sure... and the others if there is room. All of them on the inside pages.)

When Larry Burkett’s Debt-Free Living was first published in 1989, I could have been one of the horror story case studies that opened the book. Coming out of my own bankruptcy at the time, I was on a mission to discover how money really works. Debt-Free Living was a light in my darkness, giving voice to a lifetime of common-sense financial principles that I had largely ignored. Now, twenty years later, I believe there has never been a better time for the time-honored, godly principles of this book to make a comeback.

Dave Ramsey is the best-selling author of The Total Money Makeover, a nationally syndicated radio talk show host, and host of The Dave Ramsey Show on the Fox Business Network.

It is a privilege for me to endorse the revised Debt Free Living by the person who impacted his world like no other. Larry's life message is sorely needed today. As he would say, "God's principles of finances are always right, always relevant, and will never change."

Ron Blue is a best-selling author and president of Kingdom Advisors

Sometimes it seemed as though Larry Burkett could see around corners. He certainly saw things long before the rest of us. That's why his warnings about the dangers of debt and the direction of our economy still ring true. Indeed, the turmoil of recent years has given even greater force to his insights. Of course, as Larry would say with genuine humility, "All I do is plagiarize Scripture." He saw his role as simply trying to convey that God's Word is true and that the Lord can be trusted. Indeed, that's what Debt-Free Living is all about.

From the Publisher
Debt has dominated the financial direction of our society over the past sixty years. Credit card offers flow into our mailboxes virtually every day. Countless families give the false impression of being wealthy while drowning in a sea of debt. In fact, nearly 80 percent of divorced couples between the ages of twenty and thirty report that financial problems were the primary cause of their marital breakdown. Many people are not even sure how they got into their financial predicament, let alone how to get out. Understanding the origin of most financial difficulties is the key to escaping the "debt cycle" for good. Debt-Free Living was designed to equip individuals with sound biblical principles and solid practical advice so they can dig out and stay out of debt. Best selling author Larry Burkett skillfully teaches these principles through the real-life experiences of several couples on the brink of financial ruin. As these couples climb out of debt, you will receive helpful advice on a wide variety of financial issues you face every day. In Debt-Free Living you receive answers to questions such as

Is it better to own or to rent?
Is borrowing a sin?
When is bankruptcy a good idea?
What types of credit should I avoid?

Debt-Free Living teaches you what God has to say about debt and assists you in achieving a life that is debt free.

Trust the Title!
By dasiygmj
This book answered a lot of questions for me especially the fact the author truly references the bible and instruction that God wills for us in our everyday financial lives. Within 5 days, I had paid off 2 credit cards, transferred a balance to another card and cut those up, along with applying funds to areas that were a burden. I slept with ease knowing that when i woke up I could handle the next bill and/or collector without panic. I wasn't dodging the phone or the mailbox and within a few weeks of applying the methods and advise I had a plan that a year later I still use and the only debts I have now are our home and standard utility bills. No more car payments, no more credit cards and we have money in the savings account. Since then, most every purchase has been made in cash without even flinching, shrinking or regretting. Life is good and getting better everyday.

Seeing Beyond
By Billy Five
Right off the proverbial bat I will say if you are not a believer and do not have an active relationship with the Holy Spirit, do not bother, as much of this book involves that belief .

As for the negatives about the bulk of the book being drawn out case histories? Guilty. However, on the other hand, they are great, true scenarios on how some of us get into trouble/debt in the first place. The description of how our country/culture wound up so debt dependent is interesting as well.

If you have a grasp on such things as "The Kingdom Economy" and what (and how very much) the Bible has to say about debt, cosigning, materialism and giving, and you truly want the truth about how you got into and can get out of debt, why it is so seemingly "normal" these days, and that God will indeed intercede when we do what is consistent with His word, this book and the ministry the author founded that has helped thousands will benefit you.

Otherwise, there are thousands of books on the subject that you will probably buy with a credit card even if you can't really afford it.

I first read this book in the early 1990s. It saved my future. Larry Burkett easily describes the time honored basic principles of personal finance that is still relevant today.

Excellent visual SUMMARY for the very complex code
By Cartoon Head
A review for another book advised me that you can now download a FULL PDF copy of the code, tailored for your state, from online resources, thanks to a legal victory.

But the code is still very complex, and often goes way beyond what you need to know for basic residential code requirements. (For example, it includes commercial applications, townhouses and apartments vs. single family dwellings, etc.)

This book was AWESOME as a summary guide with visual explanations, and it includes references to the actual code where necessary. I also have the entire set of Dewalt visual guides to codes. That series has illustrative photos, but in many cases is too simplistic (and offers little explanation). This book serves a perfect balance, however, between illustrations and explanations.

The format is outstanding and easy to read or puruse.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is building a home, remodelling a home, or building an addition onto your home. DO NOT COUNT ON BUILDERS DOING THINGS RIGHT. (All you need to do is watch one episode of "Holmes on Homes" to know how that works.)

Use frequently, easy to understand
By Burning down the house
I have used this book for years on a regular basis because it has the basic, most commonly used code references that I need when drawing up designs for getting residential building permits for additions and remodels. When I first purchased it, I read it virtually from cover to cover, and its not a bad read - I learned quite a bit. I still go online to public e-codes for the full code when I need to, but this book covers most of what's needed. The illustrations are invaluable for getting an almost instantaneous idea of how something is supposed to be drawn. There are more detailed books on the market, but this is a great overview and good for every day use. I have the 2009 version and about to upgrade to 2012 as the jurisdictions where I work upgrade their reference as well.

Very helpful book for homeowners and DIY
By Constance Russello
I bought this book to help guide me to build our custom home. I have found it invaluable for subs who either don't really know their trades - are not tech savvy enough beyond physically putting something in using a hit or miss method - or for guidance when a sub simply doesn't show. We managed to get groundworks designed for slab-on-grade home and pass our plumbing inspection for it using the information from this book. Diagrams are helpful as well, which the DIY-er has to do it all themselves!

PR! - A Social History of Spin, by Stuart Ewen

The early years of the twentieth century were a difficult period for Big Business. Corporate monopolies, the brutal exploitation of labor, and unscrupulous business practices were the target of blistering attacks from a muckraking press and an increasingly resentful public. Corporate giants were no longer able to operate free from the scrutiny of the masses.“The crowd is now in the saddle,” warned Ivy Lee, one of America's first corporate public relations men. “The people now rule. We have substituted for the divine right of kings, the divine right of the multitude.” Unless corporations developed means for counteracting public disapproval, he cautioned, their future would be in peril. Lee's words heralded the dawn of an era in which corporate image management was to become a paramount feature of American society. Some corporations, such as AT&T, responded inventively to the emergency. Others, like Standard Oil of New Jersey (known today as Exxon), continued to fumble the PR ball for decades. The Age of Public Relations had begun. In this long-awaited, pathbreaking book, Stuart Ewen tells the story of the Age unfolding: the social conditions that brought it about; the ideas that inspired the strategies of public relations specialists; the growing use of images as tools of persuasion; and, finally, the ways that the rise of public relations interacted with the changing dynamics of public life itself. He takes us on a vivid journey into the thinking of PR practitioners—from Edward Bernays to George Gallup—exploring some of the most significant campaigns to mold the public mind, and revealing disturbing trends that have persisted to the present day. Using previously confidential sources, and with the aid of dozens of illustrations from the past hundred years, Ewen sheds unsparing light on the contours and contradictions of American democracy on the threshold of a new millennium.

Amazon.com Review
As "spin" assumes an omnipresent role in contemporary discourse, chasing out frank or direct speech with buzzwords and carefully weighted terminology, the time is ripe for a study of the industry that started it all. Stuart Ewen has written an exhaustive study of public relations that traces the evolution of PR throughout the 20th century, from the history of early advertising to its role in politics and "corporate communications." PR! is a book not just for industry types or communications majors, it contains thoughtful reflections on the impact of manufactured media on our culture and democracy, topics relevant to all.

From Publishers Weekly
Is there any difference between PR and propaganda? Ewen (All Consuming Images), a professor of media studies at Hunter College in Manhattan, doesn't think so. Accordingly, his account of the rise of the public relations industry begins with the U.S. Committee on Public Information, a government-sponsored organization dedicated to maintaining domestic morale during WWI. In the aftermath of the war, Ewen argues, public relations developed largely out of a corporate fear that genuine democracy would obstruct the workings of big business, with PR pioneer Edward Bernays offering, as he phrased it, lessons in "the engineering of consent." As corporations like AT&T began to perceive the importance of utilizing public relations in the face of a public increasingly suspicious of monolithic companies, the PR industry hit its stride by learning to incorporate many of the tactics and iconography of the New Deal while simultaneously opposing its progressive politics. Ewen's book trails off after the 1940s; he doesn't substantially probe the colossal impact of television or the incursion of PR methods into politics in more recent times. And although he presents a convincing portrait of a business elite attempting to use techniques of persuasion to distort and mold public opinion, he doesn't fully address the question of PR's effectiveness.

From Library Journal
A social critic and historian concerned with images and the power they have on society, Ewen (Channels of Desire, Univ. of Minnesota, 1992) presents here a social history of public relations in the United States. Modern PR rose as an attempt to explain the turmoil and confusion that occurred in the country from the end of the Civil War to the first decade of the 20th century. Public reaction to the excesses of industrialization and the growing immigrant classes caused many in power to fear that the "American way of life" was being destroyed. Ewen reviews the ongoing conflict in public relations between those who think the public is rational and want to present the facts and let people make up their minds, and those who think that opinion can be shaped by appeals to unconscious urges. Ewen gives fascinating examples of the communication similarities between FDR and Reagan, and why AT&T was loved by the public and Standard Oil hated. This provocative book should be purchased by all public and academic libraries.?William W. Sannwald, San Diego P. L.

Public Relations: To inform or persuade?
By ewomack
Public relations (PR) has become so pervasive that its very existence almost goes undetected. Some of it remains on such a level of subtlety that many observers would never notice. Seeing PR requires knowing what to look for. It lurks in obvious places such as advertising and political dialogue. But it can also appear in less obvious places such as photography, movies, television shows and news stories. Once it makes itself known the realization that the modern world is literally covered with PR hits home like a flail to the torso. This realization can dig so deep that one's own identity can even come into question. How much of who we are, what we believe in, and our framework of the world has come from public relations offices? Probably a fair amount. Decoding this miasma of stratified information would encumber a lifetime. Stuart Ewen, the author of this very ambitious history of public relations, struggles with this same question in chapter two. After all, Where is the objective frame of reference for studying something as über alles as PR? Perhaps such a perspective exemplifies philosopher Thomas Nagel's "view from nowhere."

"PR! A Social History of Spin" covers a lot of infrequently covered ground. How many have heard of the now defunct United States Committee of Public Relations (CPI)? Or the philosophy of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM)? It's all here. Roughly, the book covers attitudes towards and potential controlling of "the crowd" or "the public" from 1907 to the 1980s. The definition of "public relations" remains elusive throughout, but it takes on various meanings through the delineation of its history over some 400 pages. In the end, "public relations" involves a mosaic of multifarious concepts, attitudes and methodologies. All involve projecting specific ideas of reality to "the public" at large. As this book shows, voluminous creativity has gone into this idea.

The book opens with the author's visit to arguably one of the most influential, and least known publicly, practitioners of public relations: Edward Bernays. Some think he was even more influential than his uncle Sigmund Freud. Bernays applied many of Freud's psychoanalytic ideas to mass persuasion. He created an industry and, arguably, a way of life still in effect today. His endless list of PR accomplishments includes breaking the social taboo against women smoking and providing a framework for public relations. This framework, from the 1947 essay "The Engineering of Consent" includes three main elements: 1. Study the public as "raw materials"; 2. sway the public through emotional, not intellectual, appeals; 3. Create news via stagecraft. These elements, according to the author, still guide PR today.

Bernays' thought represents one major branch of public relations. The book covers both perspectives in depth. On one side sit those who believe that those in power should sway "the masses" with methodologies of persuasion. In other words, they should create a reality to keep the public "in check." Bernays exemplifies this position (perhaps "Bernaysians" would serve as a fitting moniker?). On the other side sit those who think public relations should inform, not persuade the public. The "Progressive Publicists" of the late 19th and early 20th centuries propounded this idea. To such thinkers, information provides the panacea for social ills. An informed public is an empowered public. The swing between these nearly opposing poles pervades the history of public relations, though the book suggests that the followers of Bernays have triumphed. Conceding this, a short concluding chapter asks what implications Bernaysianism carries for modern democracy.

An interesting chapter explores the public relations of the Roosevelt New Deal administration. As frustration towards business practices skyrocketed throughout the 1930s, public relations was used fervently against Wall Street. The New Deal even utilized both branches of public relations to create support for social welfare programs. Using both emotional and intellectual appeals, FDR kept the New Deal alive until a massive business backlash following the war. During the late 1940s and 1950s, business borrowed New Deal tactics for their own ends. Social programs, taxation, and communism fell under the axe of this era's PR. Looking at today's landscape, this approach proved extremely successful. By appropriating New Deal rhetoric of "the greater good," late 20th century business practitioners were able to undermine many of FDR's social programs. As television entered the public sphere, the public relations industry saw a golden opportunity. And they took it. As early as 1955 a book entitled "Telephone News on Television" provided guidance for mass persuasion via television.

The book's bulk deals mainly with post-war public relations. Not until the book's fifth and final part does television enter the discussion. The post 1950s era gets largely sequestered to chapters 15 and 16. Those looking for contemporary perspectives on PR will only find nibbles here. Though the book nonetheless remains incredibly relevant today. Also, its publication date of 1996 pretty much precludes any discussion of the now most pervasive PR tool: the internet. And though the author's political stance stands out like neon, the book provides a fascinating, potentially life-altering, perspective on modern media and modern life. The thick pages of "PR! A social history of spin" carry massive implications for anyone living in a modern democracy. People from any political persuasion will benefit.

Can't go wrong reading this book!
By Shaunessy
I first bought/read this book over a dozen years ago. It was an enlightening read providing a lot of insight into the world of public relations and advertising. I've recommended this book to friends as a great primer and most agree this is a great read. I've read several works since on the subject matter and while this was my "first" it's hard to compare them as this one did such a great job.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Young Adult Book of the Month, May 2014: E. Lockhart’s novel, We Were Liars, is clever, alluring, and wildly addictive. Each summer the wealthy, seemingly perfect, members of the Sinclair family gather on their private island. We Were Liars is the story of those annual reunions; in particular what happened during a summer that protagonist Cadence is unable to remember. Prejudice, greed, and shifting patriarchal favoritism among the three adult sisters contrasts with the camaraderie and worldview of the teenage cousins and their dear friend Gat. Lazy days of sticky lemonades on the roof and marathon Scrabble games give way to twisty suspense, true love, and good intentions gone horribly wrong. We Were Liars is a story that begs to be read in one sitting. --Seira Wilson

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Cadence Sinclair Easton comes from an old-money family, headed by a patriarch who owns a private island off of Cape Cod. Each summer, the extended family gathers at the various houses on the island, and Cadence, her cousins Johnny and Mirren, and friend Gat (the four "Liars"), have been inseparable since age eight. During their fifteenth summer however, Cadence suffers a mysterious accident. She spends the next two years—and the course of the book—in a haze of amnesia, debilitating migraines, and painkillers, trying to piece together just what happened. Lockhart writes in a somewhat sparse style filled with metaphor and jumps from past to present and back again—rather fitting for a main character struggling with a sudden and unexplainable life change. The story, while lightly touching on issues of class and race, more fully focuses on dysfunctional family drama, a heart-wrenching romance between Cadence and Gat, and, ultimately, the suspense of what happened during that fateful summer. The ending is a stunner that will haunt readers for a long time to come.—Jenny Berggren, formerly at New York Public Library

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Cadence Sinclair Eastman is the oldest grandchild of a preeminent family. The Sinclairs have the height, the blondness, and the money to distinguish them, as well as a private island off the coast of Massachusetts called Beechwood. Harris, the family patriarch, has three daughters: Bess, Carrie, and Penny, who is Cadence’s mother. And then there is the next generation, “the Liars”: Cadence; Johnny, the first grandson; Mirren, sweet and curious; and outsider Gat, an Indian boy and the nephew of Carrie’s boyfriend. Cadence, Johnny, Mirren, and Gat are a unit, especially during “summer 15,” the phrase they use to mark their fifteenth year on Beechwood—the summer that Cady and Gat fall in love. When Lockhart’s mysterious, haunting novel opens, readers learn that Cady, during this summer, has been involved in a mysterious accident, in which she sustained a blow to the head, and now suffers from debilitating migraines and memory loss. She doesn’t return to Beechwood until summer 17, when she recovers snippets of memory, and secrets and lies—as well as issues of guilt and blame, love and truth—all come into play. Throughout the narrative, Lockhart weaves in additional fairy tales, mostly about three beautiful daughters, a king, and misfortune. Surprising, thrilling, and beautifully executed in spare, precise, and lyrical prose, Lockhart spins a tragic family drama, the roots of which go back generations. And the ending? Shhhh. Not telling. (But it’s a doozy).HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Lockhart’s latest is unlike anything she’s done before. With a Printz Honor to back her, plus a major marketing campaign—and a promotional quote from John Green—this is poised to be big. Grades 7-12. --Ann Kelley

Surprisingly engaging with some annoying flaws
By J. Richardson
I guess the best way to start this review is to be as blunt as possible: I actually really enjoyed my time with We Were Liars. I say “actually” because I was skeptical at first. After browsing Goodreads, there seemed to be two general reactions:

1) “I love this book! It’s so good! Oh my god!"

and

2) “I detest everything about this book. Why is it getting so much praise?”

So, me being me, I eliminated all expectations. I mean, the synopsis doesn’t give you much information to begin with, but I still wanted to be as open as possible. The end result? In short, We Were Liars is an intriguing novel that engaged me early on, kept me interested the entire time, and had me genuinely surprised at the end. The downside is the writing is a bit odd, which doesn’t seem like it would be a huge deal, but it did detract from my enjoyment of the novel as a whole.

We Were Liars follows young Cadence, who is part of a wealthy family known as the Sinclairs. Her story takes place shortly after a terrible accident during Summer Fifteen, where she suffered something traumatic--so traumatic, in fact, that she has no recollection of what happened. So, it is her goal, and ours, to pick up the pieces and find out what happened that night, because the doctors feel she needs to come to the realization on her own.

The problem I can see some people having with this novel is that none of the characters are relatable if you are not wealthy yourself, except for Gat, who is Cadence’s love interest. However, if I am being completely honest, where a novel like Don’t Try To Find Me treats the “problems” of its wealthy protagonists as real issues, We Were Liars goes out of its way to mock them, which makes most of their petty squabbles seem less problematic and more of what they are: greedy people acting selfish. In doing so, it helped avoid the frustration I would have normally felt reading about a group of people like the Sinclairs.

Instead, it focuses on Cadence’s real health issues, which can essentially be boiled down to migraines, but these migraines are so bad that it leaves her nauseous and unable to move. If you don’t have a family member who suffers with something similar, it is easy to pass this off as her being over-dramatic, but it’s not. This is not to say Cadence doesn’t go a bit overboard on occasion, however, which is made clear very early on with this wonderful mind-f***:

"Then he pulled out a handgun and shot me in the chest. I was standing on the lawn and I fell. The bullet hole opened wide and my heart rolled out of my rib cage and down into a flower bed. Blood gushed rhythmically from my open wound,
then from my eyes,
my ears,
my mouth."

This bizarre excerpt is the perfect example of what is wrong with the novel on a technical level: Lockhart’s writing is an entirely different level of weird. For starters, there is no indication that the above text is metaphorical until you read the next couple of paragraphs. It’s just Cadence being Cadence, which resulted in a loud expletive on my end. Also, if you hadn’t noticed, Lockhart has

A weird tendency

To do this

For seemingly no reason

At all.

Again, not a huge issue, but it is kind of an eyesore, and there is never any explanation for why the structure randomly switches up in the middle of a page. Lastly, and probably my biggest gripe personally, throughout the novel the story switches from present day to Summer Fifteen, but the reader is never given a sign of when a switch is made. This occasionally resulted in me reading one, two, or sometimes three of these “chapters” before I realized that we had changed years. So for a novel that generally succeeded in pulling me in, it really tried its best to simultaneously pull me out.

With that note, I don’t feel I have much else to say except to try and brush-off some of the pretentiousness as rich white teenagers trying to be deep. Yes, it can get a little corny sometimes, but this is technically YA, so I think it’s safe to say that it kind of comes with the territory. In any case, as the reviews indicate, We Were Liars is definitely not for everyone—no book is, honestly—but there is something about its story that enamored me, and although there are a handful of flaws with how the book is actually written, I couldn’t put it down.

Amazing book. Review includes spoilers
By Kindle Customer
I really enjoyed this book. Whenever I stopped reading it because I had to do real life things I kept thinking about it. I enjoy books that make me think and aren't just mushy gushy love stories or just plain confusing. I can see why people would be upset with the ending. But honestly if you were reading the same story as I am then you would notice the clues.

If you don't want to be spoiled then stop reading now.

I mean seriously. One of the aunts moved out of her house because she couldn't bear to live it anymore. The main house was leveled and rebuilt. No one ever interacts with the Liars besides Cady. Her mother tells her she is spending too much time alone. The Littles are acting out. The twins steal pills and read about paranormal stuff. One little gets scared at night and thinks the house is haunted. Merrin is sick and doesn't get better. The Liars magically appear when Cady wants them and never clean up after themselves. Cady doesn't remember what happened for a whole summer. The aunts are pretty much drunk 24/7 and being nice to each other because they are all grieving. The Liars ignore Cady when she doesn't return. Her aunt walks around the island crying into her son's jacket and keeps asking Cady if she has seen him. His little brother has nightmares so fierce he wakes up at night screaming while his mother wanders around aimlessly. Grandfather keeps calling Cady Merrin. Merrin talks about never getting married or having a boyfriend. Gat talks about being normal and loving Cady but how messed up it really is. They all get ridiculously sad about never being able to visit foreign countries despite being stupid rich.

I mean if that isn't enough clues of what happened Summer 15 then I don't know what book you were reading. It wasn't a love story. It was a tragedy. I didn't know the details but I sure as heck knew what happened. I'm sure there are some that I didn't list but I think you get the point.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. It did a good job of keeping my interest and showing what social classes and the like can do to young minds. It showed the family feuds over money that seem pointless until you don't know any other way.

It's a big mind game and I enjoyed playing.

Hauntingly Amazing.
By Chels.
I had this book in my wishlist for a really long time when I finally decided to buy it yesterday. I couldn't put it down the moment I started. I finished it in one day. The story itself was incredible but the writing was out of this world. It was truly incredible. I haven't sobbed that hard at a book in a very very very long time. I have so many questions. This story hit me really hard. It shook me to my core. I sat on my bed after I finished and just cried my heart out for the characters, their families, the Liars, and the damn dogs. E. Lockhart, this story was hauntingly beautiful. Something that will stick with me for a while. It definitely made me think about my own family and all the arguments we have and all the things I have purposely blocked out and refuse to remember. Wow. Just wow.

Good pictures but could use more specifics
By Mom's in the Garden
Ms. Jabbour has produced a great looking book. I'm happy I added this to my home library even though I've got a lot of others about four-season gardening (such as E. Coleman's books). It's always nice to see how someone gardens on the back side of the calendar. The book has a many photos, which are helpful and well done.

It would be great to see actual plans for a mini hoophouse, including what exactly to buy, lengths and types of materials, and so on. I agree that planting charts would be nice, but many other books have them, and they can be region-specific so not useful to a general audience. And a picture showing how to cut the slit down the "c" clamp cut from a pvc pipe would be useful.

One edit: The graphic for timing Brussels Sprouts should read "First Fall Frost" instead of "Last Spring Frost" and should have another bar for long-season varieties.

Edit to my review: If you are looking for a resource with more helpful specifics, check out Barbara Damrosch's book, The Four Season Farm Gardener's Cookbook. Plans and instructions for a small hoop house are available on the Four Season Farm's website.

grow all year
By K. Platt
I have long extolled the virtues of sowing seed year round. I have long extolled the virtues of vegetable growing. So I welcomed this book with open arms. Niki looks at how to extend the season and grow vegetables all year round. Whilst northern gardeners in short season areas will easily think this a god send, Niki states that the book is for gardeners no matter where they live. The first chapter deals with extending the season. I love the harvest pages - cool, cold, warm season. The photography is great and there are some fab ideas for veg gardeners here. Some of it is specific to the USA and Canada, like frost dates, but most of this information can be adapted to where you live. Chapter 2 deals with continuous crops, soil amendment and interplanting to make the most of your site. Chapter 3 deals with growing into winter when most of us have stopped. It looks at all sorts of protection and more. Chapter 4 is all about designing productive gardens. Part 2 of the book is about the right crops. It's an A-Z of veg and herbs to grow covered in two chapters with Niki's picks, hints and tips. Wait, there's even more , you get instructions for building a cold frame and useful charts. Best garden book I've seen for a while. This review first appeared on Karen Platt's book review website.

Great book for northern gardeners!
By mtgirl
This is a great book for northern gardeners trying to extend their too-short growing season. It includes detailed descriptions for growing various vegetables and herbs through the seasons, even some particularly cold-hardy plants that are unfamiliar to a lot of people. One thing I would have preferred is a comprehensive chart/schedule showing planting dates similiar to that found in Eliot Coleman's first book. I still would highly recommend this book.

Review

"Fisher, Piazza, and Roane have assembled leading behavior analysts to provide a strong foundation in applied behavior analysis (ABA). Readers will gain both an understanding of the science and an appreciation for how ABA can benefit education, school psychology, autism treatment, behavioral medicine, and other disciplines. A major strength of the book is the high caliber of the contributing authors. This handbook will be a useful text for graduate courses, particularly those in the growing number of university programs focused on training individuals in advanced ABA."--Robert H. Horner, PhD, Alumni-Knight Endowed Professor of Special Education, University of Oregon

"This is an authoritative volume for practitioners, graduate students, and academicians. Authors include many top contributors to the field, who address basic principles; assessment and intervention; and specific applications in such areas as autism, education, addiction, and gerontology. The Handbook is well organized and chock full of valuable information. A great go-to resource."--Travis Thompson, PhD, Special Education Program, University of Minnesota

"The Handbook brings together the collective expertise of leading scientists and practitioners who cover the full range of topics relevant to applied behavior analysis. The breadth and depth of topics covered make this volume unique; I have no doubt that it will become a 'must-have' book for students, practitioners, and researchers alike."--Louis Hagopian, PhD, Program Director, Neurobehavioral Unit, Kennedy Krieger Institute; Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine

What Remains: A Memoir of Fate, Friendship, and Love, by Carole Radziwill

A stunning, tragic memoir about John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn Bissett, and his cousin Anthony Radziwill, by Radziwill’s widow, now a star of The Real Housewives of New York.

What Remains is a vivid and haunting memoir about a girl from a working-class town who becomes an award-winning television producer and marries a prince, Anthony Radziwill. Carole grew up in a small suburb with a large, eccentric cast of characters. At nineteen, she struck out for New York City to find a different life. Her career at ABC News led her to the refugee camps of Cambodia, to a bunker in Tel Aviv, and to the scene of the Menendez murders. Her marriage led her into the old world of European nobility and the newer world of American aristocracy.

What Remains begins with loss and returns to loss. A small plane plunges into the ocean carrying John F. Kennedy Jr., Anthony’s cousin, and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, Carole’s closest friend. Three weeks later Anthony dies of cancer. With unflinching honesty and a journalist’s keen eye, Carole Radziwill explores the enduring ties of family, the complexities of marriage, the importance of friendship, and the challenges of self-invention. Beautifully written, What Remains “gets at the essence of what matters,” wrote Oprah Winfrey. “Friendship, compassion, destiny.”

From Publishers Weekly
Here's a very sad story: a middle-class girl is working as a reporter at ABC, where she meets a handsome man from a famous family. They court, marry and become best friends with the husband's first cousin and his new wife. Abruptly, the reporter's husband is diagnosed with cancer. He dies, but not before the cousin and his wife (and her sister) die, too, in a senseless plane crash. This would be a heartbreaking story even if it weren't about Anthony Radziwill, nephew of Jackie Kennedy Onassis, and about his and Carole's friendship with John and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. But because its publisher (and, presumably, the author) have decided not to market it as a "Kennedy book" but "a memoir of fate, friendship and love," it begs consideration on its literary merits. So here goes: Radziwill is a serviceable, if sentimental, writer. She is brave, especially when she describes how cancer became the third party in her marriage, and how she briefly flirted with infidelity. She also knows how to convey the essence of a person with small scenes and quotes (JFK Jr. holding his dying friend's hand and softly singing a song from their childhood; director Mike Nichols not calling but just coming to the hospital and handing out sandwiches to the nurses). Still, perhaps in Radziwill's effort to further the myth of its non-Kennedyness, much of this already short book feels padded—with scenes from the author's childhood and medical details about Anthony's treatment. Otherwise, much of Radziwill's writing approaches melodrama, particularly when she recounts that July 1999 night when the plane crashed. At one point, Radziwill scoffs at the "tragedy whores" who luxuriate in Kennedy trauma, and yet she seems to have been unable to resist contributing some crumbs to their feeding frenzy.

I Understand the Negative Reviews...
By Jessica
I rarely write reviews on books because I feel that books are very subjective - they transport each of us to different places. But I felt compelled to write a review after finishing this book because I know that had I read this book when it was released, I would have given it one star...but a few life altering years later, I now give it five.

I understand the reviews indicating that the book seemed self-congratulatory and that her feelings toward her husband seemed glib, if not downright cold. Again, feelings I would have shared upon the book's release. Now, I choose to applaud Ms. Radziwill for her candor and honesty.

I watched my mother battle and succumb to a terrible rare, but deadly illness. Our lives were very much the same as Anthony's - one step forward, two steps back. But this is not about my situation, but rather, the lens I was able to use while reading it.

This is a story of a woman who achieved a great deal of professional success and was on the cusp of the proverbial fairy tale. But life dealt her marriage a terrible blow with this devastating cancer that plagued them. It didn't come & stay...it came & went, again and again and again. I believe that, in & of itself, is terribly sad. You have dreams, you dismantle your dreams, you believe in them again, they are shattered again. Yes, I know many people face these difficulties & other hardships, but she is trying to explain how she lived and coped in her own personal way. I had deep appreciation for her willingness to discuss her gamut of feelings throughout those years. When an illness overwhelms your life personally, or by proxy, it is all consuming. It's 24/7. She gave a voice to the spectrum of emotions she felt.

It was no secret that John Kennedy Jr. was her husband's cousin and best friend, so I'm astounded by the number of people who choose to view her relationship with Carolyn in a negative manner. She was illustrating a shared kinship of two girls from remarkably similar backgrounds who ended up royalty (actual and American) in the most fabled and studied family in modern America. I, personally, enjoyed how she humanized Carolyn, gave her a voice, let us get to know who she was. I loved their friendship and their support network.

This, ultimately, is a book written by a woman who is grieving the loss of her husband and the sudden loss of her best friend. I honestly think that if you have not experienced one or the other that you will not fully appreciate this book, that you will, perhaps, "side" with the negative reviews. She states quite clearly that when you are grieving, what remains are your memories and your stories. Her catharsis is to share hers. As someone who watched the person I loved more than anyone else ravaged by a terrible illness for many years, I appreciated her candor. As someone who relied on my friendships to get through that time, I appreciated her willingness to tell her stories with Carolyn. I can't imagine losing the entire foundation of my personal life within mere weeks of each other.

It's a beautiful tome to love, loss, and friendship - it's a book that sticks with you. I think it's a book that can be read and re-read at different times in our lives and appreciated in different ways. To me, that's the mark of a five star book.

Real Housewife goes through Real Hell
By ObsessiveReader
When I first ran across Carole Radziwill she was just another self-promoter on Real Housewives of New York - they all have some product they're pushing, whether it's wine, toaster ovens, or bottles of diet alcohol. Carole was billed as a writer so that meant books.

I'll admit though, I became curious. She was on the way to London to pick up her husband's ashes and she talked about her experiences on the show. I'm widowed as well and I became curious. She'd made some cracks about "widow is the new virgin" which was pretty obnoxious but her feelings on camera seemed real.

Her memoir showed a different picture than the "all work and no play makes me a happy girl" tv persona. She'd grown up hardscrabble, in a large family that sounded both loving and difficult. Her incredible drive came through in every sentence, and while it took her far, it must have been incredibly painful to live with. She clearlly wanted to be at the top and center of the world as she saw it: as a journalist, a writer, a woman, and a social being. And why not? She'd seen it on television and she went for it -- and even got it.

She writes movingly of her husband's cancer treatment and how they coped. However the relationship that she writes of most beautifully and movingly was of her friendship with Carolyn Bessette. There was clearly a bond between these two girls who'd grown up so differently from their husbands but it was more than that. The Carolyn Bessette that most of us knew about was a cardboard figure, a cariacature, courtesy of the media, who'd known how to play hardball with the nation's most eligible bachelor and who summoned Martha Stewart to teach her to cook (I read it in the New York Post so it must be true). Carole's Carolyn was a beautiful, rare person who understood suffering immediately and knew how to help with humor, love and compassion.

Carole makes the loss feel immedate and real - the fateful plane accident succeeded a few weeks later by the death of her husband. She'd lost her entire world.

And yet she has prevailed and written this book. Is it great literature? No? It doesn't need to be. It's simply a reminder that anything can happen to anyone at any time, and that the picture of the rich and famous we see online and in the press is only that - a picture and not the whole story.

It's a very interesting book and if you are dealing with any sort of loss, well, hopefully it's helpful. I found it to be so.

Moving story, well written
By The Blonde Avenger
I overlooked this book originally because I'm definitely not a "real housewives" fan. The few times I have watched the show, I've wanted the 60 minutes back so I can do something constructive with my life. I was more interested from the Carolyn Bessette Kennedy angle. Plus I am Carole Radziwill's age and I grew up with a mother who idolized Jackie Kennedy.

I hardly ever write reviews but this book was so moving that I felt compelled to do so. Anyone who has lost someone suddenly or fought cancer will appreciate this book. But there's so much more to this book. It's a story of love and loss, working hard and fighting hard.

This is why I like this book:

1. It's a Cinderella story, and who doesn't love Cinderella stories? The bride was not unattractive, but by her own admission, she was not model material. As with most Cinderellas, she had no pedigree and her family was solidly middle-class. But unlike most formulaic Cinderella stories, it appears there was no Grand Recognition when they met for the first time while they worked on a project together for ABC. Carole even dubbed them most likely to not do anything together in the future and noted their many differences: neat night owl versus messy morning person, for instance. But over time he fell in love with her brains and personality, which was another reason to cheer her on and to love the story. The respect he had for her smarts --he trusted her with his life and she handled every aspect of his medical treatment-- is evident in their story.

2. I understand biographies are self-centered by nature, but I generally find most "celebrity" stories, whether in book or interview form, tiresome to read. There's much humble-bragging about their "problems." to which most of the human race cannot relate, interspersed with a constant thread of I'm-so-wonderful. ( Gwyneth and Julia, anyone?) Carole's writing style is self-effacing and honest. She weaves a story of how fortune, both good and bad, has worked in her life and in the lives of others.

3. I left this book with complete admiration of her writing. The story itself is heartbreaking. Over a very short time period she endured unimaginable losses. Her closest friend and her husband's closest friend died in a plane crash. Her husband's death from cancer followed three weeks later . Her husband's death was somewhat expected, but losing Carolyn and John Kennedy was not. How one would experience it, let alone write about it, I can't imagine, yet she does it in a way that is neither self-aggrandizing nor self-pitying. (And there is plenty of reason for self-pity, IMO.) She candidly recounts how illness and cancer strained her and her husband to their limits. She presents their struggles with illness and death in a realistically heart-breaking way. It kept my attention.

4. Plenty has been written about Carolyn Bessette Kennedy as a coke-addled, brainless bimbo fashionista. In Carole's story, we see another side of CBK. Carole makes the case convincingly that Carolyn was a funny, delightful and loyal friend.

5. The timeline is logical. Flashbacks should only be done if one is a skilled writer or has a skilled ghost writer. Christina Haag's novel jumped between time periods and it wasn't well done and I found it distracting. In addition, Haag's book was a yawner and I didn't finish it. Carole's novel starts with a dispassionate discussion of the plane crash, then to her Cinderella wedding. She goes back to spend a little time on her childhood and her close Italian family, then she discusses how her life intersected with Anthony and where they went from there. The book ends with a return to the plane crash, but by this time you've gone full circle and you see the emotional impact: she and Anthony were the second people to know John's plane had not arrived at the destination; she had to put the pieces together; she was the one who notified the Coast Guard and started the notification process to the family. Anyone who's had one of those calls late at night can relate to the anguish she and her husband must have been feeling.

As an aside, I had a neutral/no opinion of the Kennedys prior to this book, but my opinion of them was not improved after reading this book. After John junior's sudden death, they circled the wagons and treated anyone who wasn't a blood relation callously. Two days after the crash Carole planned to go to a meeting with the Kennedys to discuss what to do about a funeral. She was going at the behest of Carolyn Bessette's mother. (Carole's husband Anthony was presumably too sick to attend.) Carole writes it was "gently explained" by the Kennedys that she, Carole, was not welcome to attend. She ultimately did not make the meeting due to a late plane, but she learned the Kennedys first wanted to bury John alone in the family plot and not include his wife Carolyn. (All three, Carolyn, John and Lauren Bessette, were ultimately buried at sea.) And while Caroline Kennedy, John Junior's sister, was close to Anthony, this hospitality was not extended to his wife.

tldr: If you are interested in the Radziwills/Kennedys, you'll want to read this book. It's moving and well done.
