In the Thrive Foods, I introduce something called the Nutrient-to-Resource Ratio, which considers the amount of each natural resource that goes into food production in exchange for the amount of nutrients that food offers. Based on these findings, I then make suggestions as to what foods are most beneficial to personal health as well as environmental preservation. The goal is simple: get as high a level of health-boosting micronutrients from food, while expending the smallest amount of each natural resource to do so. (Essentially, it's a mathematical way of saying plant-based whole foods make a lot of sense). There are also 200 recipes, including a few from my favorite North American restaurants, as well as a few of my favorite chefs.

About the Author
Brendan Brazier is a former professional Ironman triathlete and the creator of VEGA, an award-winning whole food product line. Recognized as one of the world's foremost authorities on plant-based nutrition, Brazier is a guest lecturer at Cornell University.

I wanted to like it

I wanted to like this book. However, it did disappoint me, and it left me wondering about the book's intended audience.

A large part of the book is devoted to Brazier's outlining his nutritional philosophy. However, this material was already covered in his earlier book, Thrive. I bought this book expecting it to focus mainly on recipes based on this philosophy, and I was a little disappointed by how much of it was devoted, instead, to rehashing his earlier book.

My other worry about the book is that a lot of the book's recipes just aren't, I think, very practical--or, if they are, they're only going to be practical for a limited number of readers. A large number of recipes require pretty obscure ingredients--stuff that just isn't accessible to someone like myself, who lives in a mid-sized city, or readers in more rural communities. Not to put to fine a point on it, but I think you're going to need to have access to a pretty well-stocked health food store to implement most of the recipes in this book. (I found, too, that many of the recipes in this book are detailed and time-consuming; it was tough to find time to cook them given my work hours each week.)

Perhaps these criticisms say more about me than about the book's shortcomings. I'm a long distance runner who switched over to something fairly close to a vegan diet a few years ago. I was already sold on Brazier's nutritional philosophy when I bought this book; I was hoping to acquire some more recipes that would make it a little easier for me to implement it in my life. However, there weren't as many recipes in the book as I expected, and most of them weren't feasible for me, either because of the obscurity of their ingredients or because I just don't have enough free time to devote to cooking them. There are some notable exceptions. (The recipe for lentil soup with wilted spinach is a keeper!) But I felt that most of the recipes in this book are only going to be helpful for a small group of readers.

Great book, solid whole foods recipes.

I bought this book to increase my knowledge in not only eating a plant based (vegan) diet, but also to learn how to fuel our bodies, better, for athletic activity and recovery. I found out that it is truly possible to up your personal athletic abilities through the use of a whole foods plant based diet.

The recipes in this book are solid and easy to follow. Although, I do wish there were more in the way of images, as I am a visual person. Regardless, I like the book, the layout and recipes it has. It contains very clean, healthy recipes that will help your body not only perform it's best, during activity, but also to aid in a quicker recovery, helping to reduce stress on your body. This book has been used in my household a lot and I'm very happy with it.

Excellent Healthy Cookbook

This guy obviously knows his stuff. He is the picture of health and really seems to practice what he preaches. I have only tried one of his ice cream recipes so far, and it was very tasty! He seems to have a very nice array of recipes, all easy to make and without a bunch of hard to find ingredients. I give it a thumbs up!
The pictures show the outline and contents of the book along with some pictures of his creations.

What does your writing process look like? Is it tough to write a book together? Did you ever have any knock-down drag-out fights over a plot point or character trait?

Margie: The best way to describe our writing process is like a running stitch. We don't write separate chapters, or characters. We pass the draft back and forth constantly, and we actually write over each other's work, until we get to the point where we truly don't know who has written what.

Kami: By the end of the book, we don't even know. The classic example is when I said, "Marg, I really hate that line. It has to go." And she said, "Cut it. You wrote it."

Margie: I think we were friends for so long before we were writing partners that there was an unusual amount of trust from the start.

Kami: It's about respect. And it helps that we can't remember when who wrote the bad line.

Margie: We save our big fights for the important things, like the lack of ice in my house or how cold our office is. And why none of my YouTube videos are as popular as the one of Kami's three-fingered typing…okay, that one is understandable, given the page count for "Beautiful Creatures."

Kami: What can I say? I was saving the other seven fingers for the sequel.

What kinds of books do you like to read?

Kami: I read almost exclusively Young Adult fiction, with some Middle Grade fiction thrown in for good measure. As a Reading Specialist, I work with children and teens in grades K-12, so basically I read what they read.

Margie: When I write it comes from the same place as when I read: wanting to hang out with fictional characters in fictional worlds. I identify more as a reader than a writer; I just have to write it first so I can read it.

What books/authors have inspired you?

Kami: "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee, "A Good Man is Hard to Find & Other Stories" by Flannery O'Connor, "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury and "The Witching Hour" by Anne Rice. I also love Pablo Neruda.

Margie: I think Harper Lee is the greatest writer alive today. Eudora Welty is my other Southern writer kindred; I was obsessed with her in grad school. Susan Cooper and Diana Wynne Jones made me love fantasy, and my favorite poets are Emily Dickinson (at Amherst College, I even lived on her street) and Stevie Smith.

Did you set out to write fiction for young adults? Why?

Kami: We actually wrote "Beautiful Creatures" on a dare from some of the teen readers in our lives.

Margie: Not so much readers as bosses.

Kami: Looking back, we wrote it sort of like the serialized fiction of Charles Dickens, turning in pages to our teen readers every week.

Margie: And by week she means day.

Kami: When we were getting texts in the middle of the night from teens demanding more pages, we knew we had to finish.

Margie: As it says in our acknowledgements, their asking what happened next changed what happened next. Teens are so authentic. That's probably why we love YA. Even when it's fantasy, it's the emotional truth.

A lot of us voracious readers like to cast a book after reading it. Did you guys have a shared view of who your characters are? Did each of you take a different character to develop, or did you share every aspect?

Kami: We've never cast our characters, but we definitely know what they look like. Sometimes we see actors in magazines and say, "Lena just wore that!"

Margie: We create all our characters together, but after a point they became as real as any of the other people we know. We forget they're not.

Kami: I never thought of it like that. I guess we do spend all our time talking about imaginary people. Margie: So long as it's not to them…

Did you always plan to start the book with Ethan's story? Why?

Kami: We knew before we started that we wanted to write from a boy's point of view. Margie and I both have brothers—-six, between us-—so it wasn't a stretch. It's an interesting experience to fall in love with the guy telling the story rather than the guy the story is about.

Margie: We do kind of love Ethan, so we wanted there to be more to him than just the boy from boy meets girl.

Kami: He's the guy who stands by you at all costs and accepts you for who you are, even if you aren't quite sure who that is.

What is on your nightstand now?

Kami: I have a huge stack, but here are ones at the top: "Mama Dip's Kitchen," a cookbook by Mildred Council, "The Demon's Lexicon" by Sarah Rees Brennan, "Shadowed Summer" by Saundra Mitchell, "Rampant" by Diana Peterfreund, and an Advanced Reader Copy of "Sisters Red" by Jackson Pearce.

Margie: I have Robin McKinley's "Beauty," Maggie Stiefvater's "Ballad," Kristen Cashore's "Fire," Libba Bray's "Going Bovine," and "Everything Is Fine" by AnnDee Ellis. And now I'm mad because I know a) Kami stole my "Rampant" and b) didn't tell me she has "Sisters Red"!

What is your idea of comfort reading?

Kami: If given the choice, I'll always reach for a paranormal romance or an urban fantasy. I also re-read my favorite books over and over.

Margie: It's all comfort reading to me. I sleep with books in my bed. Like a dog, only without the shedding and the smelling.

Have you written the next book already? What's next for Lena and Ethan?

Margie: We are revising the next book now. I don't want to give too much away, but summer in Gatlin isn't always a vacation.

Kami: I would describe book two as intense and emotional. For Ethan and Lena, the stakes are even higher.

Margie: That's true. Book two involves true love, broken hearts, the Seventeenth Moon, and cream-of-grief casseroles…

Great For Young Adult Readers!!

What I Thought:

So, if you are wanting to read something that's a little bit scary, a tid romantic, and undoubtedly interesting, Beautiful Creatures is for you! I know it's old, but give a girl some slack, I'm new at this whole YA thing. To be honest, it only captured my interest because I shamefully loved the movie {you'll see why that's important if you read the book} but now I think it is a book everyone should read at some point in their life. It's full of twists, turns, and downright "what in the world just happened" moments, which I really liked! The characters are complex, but not so much they are hard to understand or like, and it is extremely well written. Its just a really good book!

Lena Duchannes {pronounced 'Lee-Na Doo-Kane'} is kind of a classic "quiet, outcast, keeps to herself, typical high school weird girl" character, but don't let that distract you. Ethan Wate is a pure, old-family, southern charm infused, boy. Raised by his Aunt Amma and house-stricken father, Ethan wants nothing more than to get out of Gatlin. Everyone is the same. The same people run the same businesses, the same people say the same things and Ethan is tired of it. Hoping to survive the last two years of high school that he has left with just his best friend Link, he's thrown into left field when Lena Duchannes becomes the talk of the town. Not knowing what he's actually getting himself into, Ethan just can't stay away from Lena. She's different; her clothes, the way she talks, her family, it's all enthralling. Little does he know how strange things will get by being her friend.

Now, even though its labeled "young adult", this novel is for +13. It has dark elements, as well as sensitive topics that you should have previous knowledge of before committing yourself. However, it's a must read! I'm working on Book Two now, which I'll be sure to comment on as well.

Not interesting

I bought this book in hopes of finding another good young adult series after finishing Hunger Games and Divergent. I had hoped this series would keep my interest. Alas, after reading Beautiful Creatures, I was completely disappointed. The storyline, while a good idea, was executed poorly. It is overshadowed by two absolutely uninteresting and dull lead characters. I kept waiting for something interesting to happen, instead I got more dull interaction between the two. I don't believe I have ever read a book where I was so bored by two main leads - except maybe Twilight. If you could take all the supporting characters in this book and put them in a series by itself, it would be great. Adults should not bother at all with this book. Teens may like it for the Twilight romantic dullness, but anyone with brain cells should steer clear.

While I thought the juxtaposition of the dark underbelly of the ol' South and old magic was unique, and the book had some great qualities, I'm not intrigued enough to keep reading the series. To me, the book took a long time to build to the conclusion, and then, when we finally reached it, when we finally met Sarafine, it felt a little flat. Sarafine as a character was never really explored in the book, nor was her relationship with Lena, so it was no surprise that Lena chose to be Light (or delayed choosing to be Light...which I don't understand why she would put it off). Even though Sarafine was Lena's mother, Lena had no relationship with her, she knew her mother was Dark and there was no chance of any relationship with her. And all of a sudden, Macon's dead? Why Macon, or did I miss that part?

Altogether, though, the plot was well-structured, and the two main characters were realistic and interesting people. I liked the ways in which this magic system was distinguished from others by things like the drawing on the walls, controlling the weather, and the luminae library especially.

For the most part i enjoyed reading through this book more then i thought i would. The amount of apps mentioned in this book is very good and the tips&tricks that are mentioned with some apps are pretty interesting too.

The only things that i didn't really like about this book is that it does not mention on which platform(s) the apps mentioned are available on. It also doesn't mention if an app has to be paid for before you can download it or if its free to download so its kind of a gamble all around.

I also noticed that certain apps like Pokemon GO get way too much attention in this book. I know that its a popular game and all but having it fill up 5!!! spots in this book is a bit much in my opinion. Mentioning it once or twice is more then enough if you ask me.

Overall this is a pretty decent book for anyone looking to get some more apps on their device but don't want to go through the trouble of searching through the 1000's of apps that the app stores contain.

Why is it that I can recall so perfectly the things that happened to me when I was eight years old, and yet trying to remember whether or not I spoke to my colleagues about rescheduling a client assessment for next week is impossible? The things I want to remember I can’t, and the things I try so hard to forget just keep coming. The nearer I got to Beckford, the more undeniable it became, the past shooting out at me like sparrows from the hedgerow, startling and inescapable.
 
All that lushness, that unbelievable green, the bright acid yellow of the gorse on the hill, it burned into my brain and brought with it a newsreel of memories: Dad carrying me, squealing and squirming with delight, into the water when I was four or five years old; you jumping from the rocks into the river, climbing higher and higher each time. Picnics on the sandy bank by the pool, the taste of sunscreen on my tongue; catching fat brown fish in the sluggish, muddy water downstream from the Mill. You coming home with blood streaming down your leg after you misjudged one of those jumps, biting down on a tea towel while Dad cleaned the cut because you weren’t going to cry. Not in front of me. Mum, wearing a light-​blue sundress, barefoot in the kitchen making porridge for breakfast, the soles of her feet a dark rusty brown. Dad sitting on the riverbank, sketching. Later, when we were older, you in denim shorts with a bikini top under your T‑shirt, sneaking out late to meet a boy. Not just any boy, the boy. Mum, thinner and frailer, sleeping in the armchair in the living room; Dad disappearing on long walks with the vicar’s plump, pale, sun-​hatted wife. I remember a game of football. Hot sun on the water, all eyes on me; blinking back tears, blood on my thigh, laughter ringing in my ears. I can still hear it. And underneath it all, the sound of rushing water.
 
I was so deep into that water that I didn’t realize I’d arrived. I was there, in the heart of the town; it came on me suddenly as though I’d closed my eyes and been spirited to the place, and before I knew it I was driving slowly through narrow lanes lined with SUVs, a blur of rose stone at the edge of my vision, towards the church, towards the old bridge, careful now. I kept my eyes on the tarmac in front of me and tried not to look at the trees, at the river. Tried not to see, but couldn’t help it.
 
I pulled over to the side of the road and turned off the engine. I looked up. There were the trees and the stone steps, green with moss and treacherous after the rain. My entire body goose-fleshed. I remembered this: freezing rain beating the tarmac, flashing blue lights vying with lightning to illuminate the river and the sky, clouds of breath in front of panicked faces, and a little boy, ghost-​white and shaking, led up the steps to the road by a policewoman. She was clutching his hand and her eyes were wide and wild, her head twisting this way and that as she called out to someone. I can still feel what I felt that night, the terror and the fascination. I can still hear your words in my head: What would it be like? Can you imagine? To watch your mother die?
 
I looked away. I started the car and pulled back onto the road, drove over the bridge where the lane twists around. I watched for the turning— the first on the left? No, not that one, the second one. There it was, that old brown hulk of stone, the Mill House. A prickle over my skin, cold and damp, my heart beating dangerously fast, I steered the car through the open gate and into the driveway.
 
There was a man standing there, looking at his phone. A policeman in uniform. He stepped smartly towards the car and I wound down the window.
 
“I’m Jules,” I said. “Jules Abbott? I’m . . . her sister.”
 
“Oh.” He looked embarrassed. “Yes. Right. Of course. Look”— he glanced back at the house—“
there’s no one here at the moment. The girl. . . your niece . . . she’s out. I’m not exactly sure where. . .” He pulled the radio from his belt.
 
I opened the door and stepped out. “All right if I go into the house?” I asked. I was looking up at the open window, what used to be your old room. I could see you there still, sitting on the windowsill, feet dangling out. Dizzying.
 
The policeman looked uncertain. He turned away from me and said something quietly into his radio before turning back. “Yes, it’s all right. You can go in.”
 
I was blind walking up the steps, but I heard the water and I smelled the earth, the earth in the shadow of the house, underneath the trees, in the places untouched by sunlight, the acrid stink of rotting leaves, and the smell transported me back in time.
 
I pushed the front door open, half expecting to hear my mother’s voice calling out from the kitchen. Without thinking, I knew that I’d have to shift the door with my hip, at the point where it sticks against the floor. I stepped into the hallway and closed the door behind me, my eyes struggling to focus in the gloom; I shivered at the sudden cold.
 
In the kitchen, an oak table was pushed up under the window. The same one? It looked similar, but it couldn’t be; the place had changed hands too many times between then and now. I could find out for sure if I crawled underneath to search for the marks you and I left there, but just the thought of that made my pulse quicken.
 
I remember the way it got the sun in the morning, and how if you sat on the left-​hand side, facing the Aga, you got a view of the old bridge, perfectly framed. So beautiful, everyone remarked upon the view, but they didn’t really see. They never opened the window and leaned out, they never looked down at the wheel, rotting where it stood, they never looked past the sunlight playing on the water’s surface, they never saw what the water really was, greenish-​black and filled with living things and dying things.
 
Out of the kitchen, into the hall, past the stairs, deeper into the house. I came across it so suddenly it threw me, the enormous windows giving out onto the river— into the river, almost, as though if you opened them, water would pour in over the wide wooden window seat running along beneath.
 
I remember. All those summers, Mum and I sitting on that window seat, propped up on pillows, feet up, toes almost touching, books on our knees. A plate of snacks somewhere, although she never touched them.
 
I couldn’t look at it; it made me heartsick and desperate, seeing it again like that.
 
The plasterwork had been stripped back, exposing bare brick beneath, and the decor was all you: oriental carpets on the floor, heavy ebony furniture, big sofas and leather armchairs, and too many candles. And everywhere, the evidence of your obsessions: huge framed prints, Millais’s Ophelia, beautiful and serene, eyes and mouth open, flowers clutched in her hand. Blake’s Triple Hecate, Goya’s Witches’ Sabbath, his Drowning Dog. I hate that one most of all, the poor beast fighting to keep his head above a rising tide.
 
I could hear a phone ringing, and it seemed to come from beneath the house. I followed the sound through the living room and down some steps— I think there used to be a storeroom there, filled with junk. It flooded one year and everything was left coated in silt, as though the house were becoming part of the riverbed.
 
I stepped into what had become your studio. It was filled with camera equipment, screens, standard lamps and light boxes, a printer, papers and books and files piled up on the floor, filing cabinets ranged against the wall. And pictures, of course. Your photographs, covering every inch of the plaster. To the untrained eye, it might seem you were a fan of bridges: the Golden Gate, the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, the Prince Edward Viaduct. But look again. It’s not about the bridges, it’s not some love of these masterworks of engineering. Look again and you see it’s not just bridges, it’s Beachy Head, Aokigahara Forest, Preikestolen. The places where hopeless people go to end it all, cathedrals of despair.
 
Opposite the entrance, images of the Drowning Pool. Over and over and over, from every conceivable angle, every vantage point: pale and icy in winter, the cliff black and stark, or sparkling in the summer, an oasis, lush and green, or dull flinty grey with storm clouds overhead, over and over and over. The images blurred into one, a dizzying assault on the eye. I felt as though I were there, in that place, as though I were standing at the top of the cliff, looking down into the water, feeling that terrible thrill, the temptation of oblivion.
 
You loved the Mill House and the water and you were obsessed with those women, what they did and who they left behind. And now this. Honestly, Nel. Did you really take it that far?
 
 
 
Upstairs, I hesitated outside the master bedroom. My fingers on the door handle, I took a deep breath. I knew what they had told me but I also knew you, and I couldn’t believe them. I felt sure that when I opened the door, there you would be, tall and thin and not at all pleased to see me.
 
The room was empty. It had the feeling of a place just vacated, as though you’d just slipped out and run downstairs to make a cup of coffee. As though you’d be back any minute. I could still smell your perfume in the air, something rich and sweet and old-​fashioned, like one of the ones Mum used to wear, Opium or Yvresse.
 
“Nel?” I said your name softly, as if to conjure you up, like a devil. Silence answered me.
 
Farther down the hall was “my room”— the one I used to sleep in: the smallest in the house, as befits the youngest. It looked even smaller than I remembered, darker, sadder. It was empty save for a single, unmade bed, and it smelled of damp, like the earth. I never slept well in this room, I was never at ease. Not all that surprising, given how you liked to terrify me. Sitting on the other side of the wall, scratching at the plaster with your fingernails, painting symbols on the back of the door in blood-​red nail polish, writing the names of dead women in the condensation on the window. And then there were all those stories you told, of witches dragged to the water or desperate women flinging themselves from the cliffs to the rocks below, of a terrified little boy who hid in the wood and watched his mother jump to her death.
 
I don’t remember that. Of course I don’t. When I examine my memory of watching the little boy, it makes no sense: it is as disjointed as a dream. You whispering in my ear— that didn’t happen on some freezing night at the water. We were never here in winter anyway, there were no freezing nights at the water. I never saw a frightened child on the bridge in the middle of the night— what would I, a tiny child myself, have been doing there? No, it was a story you told, how the boy crouched amongst the trees and looked up and saw her, her face as pale as her nightdress in the moonlight; how he looked up and saw her flinging herself, arms spread like wings, into the silent air.
 
I don’t even know whether there really was a boy who saw his mother die, or whether you made the whole thing up.
 
I left my old room and turned to yours, the place that used to be yours, the place that, by the look of it, is now your daughter’s. A chaotic mess of clothes and books, a damp towel lying on the floor, dirty mugs on the bedside table, a fug of stale smoke in the air and the cloying smell of rotting lilies, wilting in a vase next to the window.
 
Without thinking, I began to tidy up. I straightened the bedding and hung the towel on the rail in the en suite. I was on my knees, retrieving a dirty plate from under the bed, when I heard your voice, a dagger in my chest.
 
“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?”
 
 
 
 
 
I scrabbled to my feet, a triumphant smile on my lips, because I knew it— I knew they were wrong, I knew you weren’t really gone. And there you stood in the doorway, telling me to get the fuck out of your room.
 
The smile died, because of course it wasn’t you at all, it was your daughter, who looks almost exactly like you did when you were a teenager. She stood in the doorway, hand on hip. “What are you doing?” she asked again.
 
“I’m sorry,” I said. “I’m Jules. We haven’t met, but I’m your aunt.”
 
“I didn’t ask who you were,” she said, looking at me as though I were stupid, “I asked what you were doing. What are you looking for?” Her eyes slid away from my face and she glanced over towards the bathroom door. Before I could answer, she said, “The police are downstairs,” and she stalked off down the corridor, long legs, lazy gait, flip-​flops slapping on the tiled floor.
 
I hurried after her.
 
“Lena,” I said, putting my hand on her arm. She yanked it away as though scalded, spinning round to glare at me. “I’m sorry.”
 
She dipped her eyes, her fingers massaging the place where I’d touched her. Her nails bore traces of old blue polish, her fingertips looked as though they belonged to a corpse. She nodded, not meeting my eye. “The police need to talk to you,” she said.
 
She’s not what I expected. I suppose I imagined a child, distraught, desperate for comfort. But she isn’t, of course, she’s not a child, she’s fifteen and almost grown, and as for seeking comfort— she didn’t seem to need it at all, or at least not from me. She is your daughter, after all.
 
 
The detectives were waiting in the kitchen, standing by the table, looking out towards the bridge. A tall man with a dusting of salt-​and-​pepper stubble on his face and a woman at his side, about a foot shorter than him.
 
The man stepped forward, his hand outstretched, pale grey eyes intent on my face. “Detective Inspector Sean Townsend,” he said. As he reached out, I noticed he had a slight tremor. His skin felt cold and papery against mine, as though it belonged to a much older man. “I’m very sorry for your loss.”
 
So strange, hearing those words. They said them yesterday, when they came to tell me. I’d almost said them myself to Lena, but now it felt different. Your loss. I wanted to tell them, she isn’t lost. She can’t be. You don’t know Nel, you don’t know what she’s like.
 
Detective Townsend was watching my face, waiting for me to say something. He towered over me, thin and sharp-​looking, as though if you got too close to him you might cut yourself. I was still looking at him when I realized that the woman was watching me, her face a study in sympathy.
 
“Detective Sergeant Erin Morgan,” she said. “I’m very sorry.” She had olive skin, dark eyes, blue-black
hair the colour of a crow’s wing. She wore it scraped back from her face, but curls had escaped at her temple and behind her ears, giving her a look of dishevelment.
 
“DS Morgan will be your liaison with the police,” Detective Townsend said. “She’ll keep you informed about where we are in the investigation.”
 
“There’s an investigation?” I asked dumbly.
 
The woman nodded and smiled and motioned for me to sit down at the kitchen table, which I did. The detectives sat opposite me. DI Townsend cast his eyes down and rubbed his right palm across his left wrist in quick, jerky motions: one, two, three.
 
DS Morgan was speaking to me, her calm and reassuring tone at odds with the words coming out of her mouth. “Your sister’s body was seen in the river by a man who was out walking his dogs early yesterday morning,” she said. A London accent, her voice soft as smoke. “Preliminary evidence suggests she’d been in the water just a few hours.” She glanced at the DI and back at me. “She was fully clothed, and her injuries were consistent with a fall from the cliff above the pool.”
 
“You think she fell?” I asked. I looked from the police detectives to Lena, who had followed me downstairs and was on the other side of the kitchen, leaning against the counter. Barefoot in black leggings, a grey vest stretched over sharp clavicles and tiny buds of breasts, she was ignoring us, as if this were normal, banal. As though it were an everyday occurrence. She clutched her phone in her right hand, scrolling down with her thumb, her left arm wrapped around her narrow body, her upper arm roughly the width of my wrist. A wide, sullen mouth, dark brows, dirty blond hair falling onto her face.
 
She must have felt me watching, because she raised her eyes to me and widened them for just a moment, so that I looked away. She spoke. “You don’t think she fell do you?” she said, her lip curling. “You know better than that.”

The construction of this story is too heavy to allow ...

The construction of this story is too heavy to allow flow. The story is told through the visions of so many people that you loose what it is all about. Definitively no comparison to her earlier work.

Disappointing

I had really high hopes for this book since I've been seeing it raved about all over the internet lately. I did like Girl on the Train, so I decided to give this a try. I'm not sure if my expectations were too high, but I did NOT like this book. I've read a lot of books that are narrated by alternating characters, but this was ridiculous. At least 10 different characters back and forth back and forth, hard to keep up with. The entire book was just all over the place. The big "twist' of the book wasn't very shocking. Just overall disappointing.

too many plots to remember

I appreciate a good mystery novel and some suspense and yes I read Girl on a Train. There is no comparison of these books. Into the water so so hard to follow I had to restart the book again and then half way I to it I was called to work for 18 hours so I decide to pick the book up and I had to go back a chapter every time to refresh where I was. This book was good but by far the hardest to follow for me. Definitely not a stay up all nighter can't wait to dive in type of story.

About the Author
Kenneth T. Jackson is the Jacques Barzun Professor of History at Columbia University, where he has chaired the Department of History.  The author of the prize-winning Crabgrass Frontier: The Suburbanization of the United States, he has taught New York City history for four decades. He is  general editor of the Columbia History of Urban Life and a former  president of the Urban History Association, the Society of American  Historians, the Organization of American Historians, and the  New-York Historical Society.

Great content if you love New York City

Note: there are now two editions, with reviews listed for both on the same page. Really, the first edition is perfectly usable, and an enormous bargain if cash is short and interest is intense. 25 years is a twinkling in the complex history of a great city and the first edition will lead you to places to search on Google for items of interest, if the very latest information is essential. Or, try "The New York Times" -- it is a wonderful supplement to this great encyclopedia.

There is so much learning in this excellent encyclopedia that my praise will add very little to the mix: there is so much to like here:

-- up to date to the beginning of 2010.
-- impeccable sponsors - you can't beat Yale University Press and the New York Historical Society for credibility.
-- great authors, and most entries are signed so you can contact individual contributors if they have public access or at least to see their other writings.
-- very informative, not only for Manhattan although that is a primary focus but for many entries in Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Staten Island.

I purchased the Kindle version and find the text and the black and white photos perfectly legible both in the Cloud version on my computer and on my iPhone, where portability is so important.

My major complaint, shared by some of the negative reviewers (none of whom are attacking the actual content) is that there is no interactive index, or even an interactive index to the alphabetical sections, letter by letter.

However, on both the Kindle and especially in my case on the iPhone, one can use the Search function to essentially the same effect. Simply enter a word into the search box and the device will return each entry using that word. That can be tedious for a word with many hits -- "Madison" or "Park", for example, but the search entries gives enough context so that you can explore the entry.

Hyperlinks would be better, and I hope the Third Edition, will adopt that approach. In the meantime this is an essential source of information for anyone interested in New York City. I've tested that assertion for over a year; I'm training to be a Big Apple Greeter, and as part of the effort, am walking each of the Avenues in Manhattan, end to end. During those walks, I've often used the Encyclopedia on my iPhone using the Search technique to enhance my understanding of what I am seeing on the ground.

There is so much to enjoy within these pages; if you have any interest in New York City, you will love this treasure trove of information.

Gigantic and Much Too Cumbersome

This book undeniably contains a wealth of information about New York City. The preface gives various reasons for using this work, even now in the digital age - true, much of the information contained within can be accessed at any time, free of charge, on the Internet; but one would never even think of taking an interest in many of the subject matters covered, if one didn't see it listed in this book. And more knowledge is always better than less. But this physically gigantic, heavy, item is much too cumbersome for regular use. It would have been much better had it been released as several, physically smaller tomes, even if that would have upped the price a bit.

This book is majestic!

The Encyclopedia of New York City (1st edition, 1995) is incredible!

Kenneth T. Jackson is a master of all things New York City.

The very first time I read this book, I was in the reference section of my library and I was mesmerized at the richness of information he had to provide about the histories of the printing houses.

I love New York City and history. This book will forever be in my library.

Thank you Kenneth T. Jackson for compiling this masterpiece.
