About the Author
Rebecca E. Williams, PhD, is an award-winning author and clinical psychologist specializing in recovery from mental illness and addictions. She received her master's degree from Harvard University and her PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She is currently the clinic director of the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System's Wellness and Vocational Enrichment Clinic. In addition, she is an associate clinical professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego, an adjunct faculty member at the University of San Diego, and coauthor of Couple Therapy for Alcoholism. She has a psychotherapy practice in San Diego, CA.
Julie S. Kraft, LMFT, is an award-winning author.  She received her master's degree in marriage and family therapy from the University of San Diego's School of Leadership and Education Sciences. She has provided counseling to veterans and their family members at the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System and has provided psychotherapy to individuals, couples, families, and groups in community settings. Willing to do the work? This book puts the most powerful, effective tools in your grasp.

In the hands of anyone ready to do the work to overcome an addiction, this is a very powerful tool indeed. And I think it also belongs on the shelf - to be used and referenced frequently - of clinicians who work with addicts, teachers of courses on addiction, and the students who are learning to work with the addict population. The authors' integrative, mindfulness-based approach is a winning complement to 12-Step programs or Rational Recovery.
Here are just a few of the virtues of this workbook:
1) It guides the reader, in a very personal and engaging manner, through the process of identifying the emotions, thoughts, and behaviors that underly and perpetuate her addiction, setting her up for success as this work comes together in a grasp of mindfulness. The first four chapters are like having a wise, kind mentor, sponsor, or therapist to guide you through the early stages, when life can be so confusing.
2) It acknowledges head-on that people struggling with addiction have faced, and will continue to need to cope with, loss and the grief that attends it. Part 2, Looking at Your Losses, connects loss with addiction, guiding the reader to identify the cycles and anniversaries that may trigger cravings and lapses.
3) It teaches and empowers through metaphor and mnemonics, ensuring that when the addict is vulnerable and stressed, he'll be able to draw upon the relevant concept or skill with ease. One of my favorites is "Embracing the dog", which refers to those emotions that we'd rather avoid because they're uncomfortable or downright nasty. Here's a sweet metaphor that anyone can relate to, and it sets the reader up for Radical Acceptance.
Speaking of which, Marsha Linehan, founder of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) summarized the approach as "radical acceptance coupled with skillful means". This workbook cultivates the mindset of acceptance and self-efficacy by offering an ample toolkit of coping skills, journaling opportunities, and the kind of "homework" one can actually look forward to.

A must have for those that constantly relapse and don't know why.

For any one that is in Recovery be it AA, NA, CA , etc this is a must have if you have a problem holding together 6 months or a year of sobriety. The root cause of relapsing is what you need to get to and this book is a great way to do it. It is recommended in the book as well as by me to work on this book with a Therapist or higher or with a group. Do not do this alone. This book will bring up emotions and buried memories that you did not even know were there. It is not brain washing but it written so well and in a fashion that you don't even know you got From A to Z until you are there. I am about halfway through and I can tell how it has altered my perception of myself and already has helped me dig up some root causes as to why 10 years into the program the best I was ever able to stay sober was 1 year and 9 days.

Highly effective and helpful

I purchased this workbook after reading the reviews and noticing that there isnt much out on the market addressing mindfulness in addiction. I am a therapist who has worked extensively with substance abuse and believe this workbook is the ideal tool for individual and group sessions. Recently, I've used it within an Eating Disorders framework and have found it just as effective. The exercises and worksheets in this book are high quality and highly relevant. I especially love how the authors interweaved the concept of loss, as it is frequently at the core of a patient's distress. I fully endorse this book and would recommend its use for therapists and individuals alike.
