Flores Forbes, a former leader in the Black Panther Party, has been free from prison for twenty-five years. Today the recidivism rate is around 65%. Almost never mentioned in the media or scholarly attention is the plight of the 35% who don’t go back, especially black men. A few of them are hiding in Ivy League schools’ prison education programs—they don’t want to be known—but most of them are recruited by the one billion dollar industry reentry employee programs that allow the US to profit from their life and labor. Whereas, African Americans consist of only 12% of the population in the US, black males are incarcerated at much higher rates. The chances of these formerly convicted men to succeed after prison—to matriculate as leading members of society—are increasingly slim. The doors are closed to them.

Invisible Men is a book that will crack the code on the stigma of incarceration. When Flores Forbes was released from prison, he made a plan to re-invent himself but found it impossible. His involvement in a plan to kill a witness who was testifying against Huey P. Newton, the founder of the Black Panther Party, had led to his incarceration. While in prison he earned a college degree using a Pell Grant, with hope this would get him on the right track and a chance at a normal life. He was released but that’s where his story and most invisible men’s stories begin.

This book will weave Flores’ knowledge, wisdom, and experience with incarceration, sentencing reform, judicial inequity, hiding and re-entry into society, and the issue of increasing struggles and inequality for formerly incarcerated men into a collection of poignant essays, finally, giving invisible men a voice and face in society.

The truth about so called legal incarceration in the United States

With a forcefulness rarely seen in books that deal with the american prison/industrial complex and using examples from his own life experience Flores Forbes eviscerates one of our most basic (and for some cherished) assumptions: that slavery in America ended with the Civil War.

He painstakingly lays out the evidence that the practice persists today in our country masked as legal incarceration and enshrined in the exception clause of the 13th amendment..

Forbes describes how men and women (many of them convicted of minor crimes) are forced into industrial servitude, bound by chains, faced with subhuman living conditions and subjected to physical torture if they refuse to comply.

He then documents the effect that being "formerly incarcerated" has had on not just him but also on those who seek to regain full citizenship free from the stain of imprisonment.

The book implores those of us who are aware of this immoral practice to not sit idly by while it takes place but to get involved in efforts to amend the 13th amendments exception clause so that once a person has paid their debt to society a path to full restoration of their rights as citizens should await them when they are released.

I found Invisible Men :A Contemporary Slave Narrative in the era of Mass Incarceration to be one of the most compelling books 'Ive ever read and I would encourage those who recognize slavery as a crime of moral turpitude and who also care about the plight of those who are imprisoned to read it as well.

The author with honesty and clarity describes his prison experiences and the difficult and long path that he took to educate himself and integrate himself into society to become a valued employee. Along the way he learned through books and caring mentors the steep steps that former incarcerated people have to climb.

First published in Latin in 1516, Utopia was the work of Sir Thomas More (1477–1535), the brilliant humanist, scholar, and churchman executed by Henry VIII for his refusal to accept the king as the supreme head of the Church of England.

Based to some extent on the writings of Plato and other earlier authors, Utopia nevertheless contained much that was original with More.
In the nearly 500 years since the book's publication, there have been many attempts at establishing "Utopias" both in theory and in practice. All of them, however, seem to embody ideas already present in More's classic treatise: optimistic faith in human nature, emphasis on the environment and proper education, nostalgia for a lost innocence, and other positive elements.
In this new, inexpensive edition, readers can study for themselves the essentials of More's utopian vision and how, although the ideal society he envisioned is still unrealized, at least some of his proposals have come to pass in today's world.

The Life of Thomas More is Peter Ackroyd's biography--from baptism to beheading--of the lawyer who became a saint. More, a noted humanist whose friendship with Erasmus and authorship of Utopia earned him great fame in Europe, succeeded Cardinal Wolsey as Lord Chancellor of London at the time of the English Reformation. In 1535, More was martyred for his refusal to support Henry VIII's divorce and break with Rome. Ackroyd's biography is a masterpiece in several senses. Perhaps most importantly, he corrects the mistaken impression that Robert Bolt's A Man for All Seasons has given two generations of theater and film audiences: More was not, as Bolt's drama would have us believe, a civil disobedient who put his conscience above the law. Ackroyd explains that "conscience was not for More an individual matter." Instead, it was derived from "the laws of God and of reason." If the greatest justice in this book is analytic, however, its greatest joys are descriptive. Ackroyd brings 16th-century London to life for his readers--an exotic world where all of life is enveloped by the church: "As the young More made his way along the lanes and thoroughfares, there was the continual sound of bells." --Michael Joseph Gross

According to Ackroyd (Blake; Hawksmoor), More "embodied the old order of hierarchy and authority at the very moment when it began to collapse all around him." Symbolizing that collapse was Henry VIII's defiance of the pope in the "great matter" of his much-desired divorce of Catherine of Aragon. Refusing to compromise with the break from Rome, More willed his own death. He dies well in Ackroyd's narrative, but he does not live a life as saintly as he leaves it, piously amassing wealth and power, piously writing philosophical works as ambiguous as Utopia and as scatological as Responsio, piously harassing religious reformers and smugly condemning them to the stake. As a biographer of More (the first since 1984), Ackroyd is also an effective novelist. He evokes late-medieval London in sight and in smell; sends More on his workaholic schedule of legal, political, diplomatic and courtly activities; exploits familial and hagiographic anecdotes for their story values; and repeats unscholarly untruths (as Luther's cloacal epiphanies) because fiction can be more colorful than fact. Only Henry VIII in Ackroyd's large cast fails to be realized in the round, but the king, recognizing More's loyal services, does "graciously" reduce his sentence from disemboweling to beheading. After an awkward, conditional start ("But it might be more fruitful to recognise... "/ "...but it might be worth rehearsing certain of its aspects... "/ "It has in the past been noticed... "), Ackroyd's clotted language metamorphoses into elegant English, and the nobility of More's demise will move readers who persist to the end. 27 b&w illustrations not seen by PW. Great reading experience - absolutely recommended

I enjoyed reading this book. And it is a great edition too. Thomas More wrote this first formal utopia 500 years ago. What this perfect world lacks is privacy

This audiobook has a great, smooth narration that lets me enjoy the authors ideas while commuting. Very nice recording. The ideas in the book seem mildly terrifying especially since I'm an introvert. Life has been regulated to be public. So all meals are at a public location and women are mandated to take their turns preparing the public meals (sounds like a truly horrific slavery). Any man may enter into any man's house and the houses are rotated by lottery.
What this perfect world lacks is privacy. Children of families that are naturally more abundant than others are "reassigned" to families who are unable to produce children. Do the parents have any say in this matter?
Like so many of the books which purported to prescribe a perfect world for us, the perfection of this world is it's horror. As so many decisions have been mandated, it appears that individual freedom to chose - even to keep one's one child - or to NOT participate in the public evening meal every night (how exhausting) - are not optional. It reminds me a bit of the 1800s laws in the US mandating church attendance. What if I don't want to eat dinner tonight? What if I decide I'm just gonna order pizza and have a beer and watch the Spurs? Apparently that is not allowed in the perfect society of the 1500s.
This kind of novel is nonetheless valuable because in attempting to create a perfect world, it allows readers to really think about what IS perfect. Is the chaos of democracy better? Democracy has its chronic indecision and inability to move smartly forward because of the laborious and time consuming process of getting Congress or the public to agree on a concept. Yes, I have to say, I much prefer the raging American debates about abortion and gay rights to the no one lacks for anything world of Thomas More where none consider diamonds or gold interesting because they aren't useful, but iron is valued because it can be used. All cups are made from pottery; all cloth is the same color as the original material. Everyone wears the same clothes and works on their free time to improve their minds. Actually, Star Trek, the Next Generation, is a pretty close imitation of the ideas in this book, but at least in ST, you can have a private cup of tea alone in your room and you can do something privately that may not improve your mind.

Classic of Western Civilization

The year 2016 is the five century anniversary of this book, though it was originally pubished in Latin. As such, reading a biography of More that includes 'Utopia' commentary is helpful because of the time frame it was written in and the translation that occurred.

I found it interesting the book was published in Belgium and wasn't available in Britain during More's life, Shakespeare wasn't the only writer to deal with censors.

I am glad I read this after Brexit, More is very critical of leagues and alliances as a loss of power to labour. A quick read that surprises you that a man could give such deep and rational thought to a better society that included labor having secret votes for their leadership.

Each recipes comes with a good photo along with prep/cook time and instructions on how to make it.
Most use shortening or butter-olive oil we've found to be a more healthier choice.
No bake cookie crusts are also given. After the crust recipes there are recipes for fruit, custards, creamcheese fillings.
Bonus cookbooks and other works by the author are highlighted at the end.

What a nifty book! Even if you aren't planning to dismantle your horn for a complete overhaul, this book can show you how it's done - and show you why most major repairs are best left to the pros! Seeing a saxophone as a beautiful machine, where the intricate operation and co-operation of ALL the parts, goes in to making music, was fun. Now I understand the correct terminology to communicate with my own repair pro, to get my desired results. The photography is beautiful, the diagrams are very clear, and I was surprised to discover the writing was filled with respect for the instrument, as well as a sense of humor for all of us who play it. If I had students, I'd recommend this book for their saxophone library, right next to the booklets of etudes, scales, and jazz fake books.

Great for Do-It-Yourselfers

This manual has quickly become my "go-to" book when the saxophonists in my home have difficulties. I simply turn to the troubleshooting section and diagnosis begins! This book has saved me lots of money on simple repairs like neck corks, and the preventative maintenance recommendations like lubrication and pad care keeps the instrument out of the shop. I've always been a bit intimidated by all the clockwork mechanisms and all the interconnected, mysterious keyworks of the saxophone. As a guy who likes to know how things work, but dreads breaking 'em, I love how this explains the hows and whys of tone production, regulation, key height, and more with full color pictures, diagrams, and exploded drawings - awesome! (The Haynes manual for clarinet is now going into my shopping basket too.) If you've got serious or budding saxophonists in your family like me, going through this book a few times will help keep that horn the precision instrument it was intended to be!

Update: After a year with this book and a toolkit from musicmedic.com, I've saved considerable money on simple repairs for myself and the local community band my family plays with together. The book has helped me replace about half a dozen neck corks; free up a stuck C# mechanism on an old King baritone sax; successfully troubleshoot and restore function of the mysterious G# assembly on a Vintage Martin Tenor; find, adjust, and replace numerous flat and needle springs; fix a bent octave mechanism on an antique Martin neck; re-lubricate an entire "dry" sax; find leaks; adjust timing; and even replace three pads on different horns. If we had taken these instruments to the local repair shop, the instruments might have been out for two weeks each at $50 an hour. I'll never pretend to call myself an instrument repairman; but in a pinch, I can help and save the local band a few bucks. Thanks, Stephen!

Excellent Reference to the Mechanics of a Saxophone

Excellent book on selection, repair and care of your saxophone.

The author is careful to point out that certain repairs should only be performed by a qualified technician. However, he goes into great detail about the mechanics of the saxophone.

There are some repairs or fixes one can do at home in a pinch. The author tells you how to replace the cork on the neck. Certainly an easy repair that can be done at home and with minimal expense as compared to a technician charging $20 and up.

Every saxophone player should have a copy of this book. It is truly an excellent reference.

What a Splendid Treat!

This was a great teaser. Zsadist has always been my favorite from the brothers. Z has been to hell and back. He faced his demons and was rewarded with Bella and Nalla waiting for him on the other side. He is so courageous and strong but at the same time can be tender and vulnerable. This novella delves into Nalla's birth, Bella's kidnapping, Z's past existence as a sex-slave and also Z, Bella and Nalla's life as a family. If you are a Z and Bella fan or a BDB fan this short story should not be missed! If this is your first exposure to the Black Dagger Brotherhood series I strongly suggest you read the series in order Dark Lover, Lover Eternal, Lover Awakened, Lover Revealed, Lover Unbound, Lover Enshrined, Lover Avenged and due out 4/2010 Lover Mine. I highly recommend the entire series to dark urban fantasy readers. IMO, the first three books in the series classify or closely classify as hybrids between dark paranormal romance and dark urban fantasy and the rest are dark urban fantasy peppered with a bit of romance. But whatever the classification, the series is phenomenal!

Always a Fun Ride!

I never read anything that fell into the romance category. Perhaps I felt it beneath my station but I think most importantly I perceived of them all that they're all the same albeit this centers on vampires. Boy and girl vampire meet, have sex, and live happily forever after. An employee of mine told me several years ago about the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. She ended up daring me to read one and so I did. And now, I'm not ashamed to admit it but I am completely and utterly hooked and now count the days and months when the next book in the series is due to be released. Is there sex? Absolutely! But more importantly, Ward's ability to create such endearing characters makes for a fast paced read that besides the fact almost all of the players are vampires, their relationships are truly relatable. To me, it's one of those books where I purposely slow down the turning of the page so I can savor the ending but really it's because I simply don't want it to end. I've come to know all the characters so completely and intimately, frankly I miss them in between books. The reason for the four instead of five star rating is because it wasn't long enough but then again, they never are. As I await the next installment, I look forward to her latest book Bourbon Kings set to be released this summer. If it's anything like the BDB series, I'll be adding another item on my list of guilty pleasures.

I love this series

This was really good book I love this couple. Since the birth of his daughter, Nalla, Zsadist has been regressing further and further into the life he led before he met Bella he is not feeding he won't hold his daughter or talk to her about what's going and to make matter's worse they haven't had sex in months. Bella has had enough she tells Z that she is leaving on the night that she calls Rev her brother and ask if she can stay at one of his house's Z is hurt when he falls through a floor trying to help someone that two lesser had in a house that they were checking out. All Z can think about his getting back to his Bella. When he gets home they talk and he tells her that he is having dreams of his time as a slave and when he is afraid of holding his daughter. These two has some really hot sex and I thought that it was really sweet how he held Nalla and read to her. I also liked how Mary and Dr. Jane was able to help both Bella and Z. This was a really sweet short quick read with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to listening to my next book in this series.
