What is the opposite of command and control?

The leader, at the helm of an organization, charismatic, visionary, influential, and most definitely in charge of everything, is a bit elusive in this collection of book chapters on educational leadership. John Gardner describes a leader as, "an individual (who) induces a group to pursue objectives held by the leader or shared by the leader and his or her followers" (p. 17), but even this is qualified by a parenthetical "or leadership team." Jerome Murphy negates the notion of the heroic leader, replacing it with the unheroic leader - one who recognizes his/her own weaknesses, listens more than speaks, and lets go in order to take charge. Megan Tschannen-Mann's leader is one who fosters trust, sets the tone, and serves as a model, but emphatically does not order people around. Terence Deal and Kent Peterson's leader is among other things historian, symbol, potter, poet, and actor, but definitely not controller. Robert Starratt's leader has "presence," bringing him or herself fully and authentically into interactions with others, and being "wide awake to what's in front of" him or her (p. 56). Jack Welch this is not.

Permeating almost every chapter of this book is a different conception of leadership, one that takes the emphasis off one heroic individual, and distributes leadership throughout the organization. If leaders exist, they are, according to Thomas Sergiovanni, to be "leaders of leaders" (p. 376). "It's just not possible any longer," writes Peter Senge, "to "figure it out" from the top, and have everyone else following the orders of the "grand strategist" (p. 4). An underlying theme, made explicit in Margaret Grogan and Charol Shakeshaft's chapter, is that the appropriate form of leadership in educational settings is (and you can agree or disagree with this) female in character: relationships are webs, not pyramids; power is exercised "with" and not "over." Sergiovanni agrees, contending that the female style is more democratic, participatory, and inclusive than the male style.

Much of the content of this reader is an exploration, with examples and cases from education (most obviously K-12) of this distributed, participatory form of leadership. There are riches here if you have the patience to wade through the 500+ pages and find them. For example, in Roland Barth's chapter on risk, he argues that individuals must be allowed to fail if they are to learn: "If you take away a person's right to fail, you take away her right to succeed" (p. 291). And Stephen Fink & Anneke Markholt's discussion of expertise in teaching - and in particular the inadequate job we've done of defining it - is enlightening. Starratt's chapter on presence - I wasn't holding out too much hope for the value of this one - turns out to be inspiring.

If you reflect on the vision of leadership in education presented here, you may ask what it is about education (as opposed to business or the military, for example) that calls for this form of leadership. And you may also wonder, with increasing bureaucratic control over much of education at all levels, whether participatory leadership, which seeks to empower the many in an organization, isn't at odds with the directives coming down from the institutional or corporate administration, or school district. In the end, though, nobody's leading if there isn't buy-in, and essentially that's perhaps the biggest theme of this book, and its strength. Its weakness is a lack of much discussion of crisis leadership, which, no matter what the organization, requires a more directive style. Given the diversity of educational contexts, I doubt you'll read it from cover to cover, but it is worth dipping into for the parts that speak to you.

Too many errors for an established teaching tool

We had to purchase this and other Prep U codes for our RN program. All of them have mistakes. Granted, not a lot of mistakes but too many for a teaching program. I am in my second semester and I have found at least 20 mistakes so far. Our teachers say to let them know and they will notify LWW but it isn't my job to do their editing. Mistakes are things like marking the answer as incorrect and then in the explanation contradicting that (most common); typos in the questions and answers; part of the question listed as an answer and one answer split into 2 answers ( i.e. the answer to a) the question is: b) five c) sev d) en e) nine). All in all, it is frustrating to use at times but the abiltiy to learn is there.

Helped me pass med surg!

This is a wonderful product for anyone interested in nursing. I can definitely say this product helped me pass my med surg class without a doubt. It gives you different questions to answer that correlate with the different chapters of the book. Its great because you can choose which chapters you want to work on and how many questions you want to answer so you can do a quick review or spend hours practicing. It also keeps track of your questions so you even know which ones are your weakest sections. For those of you who know nursing questions… this is a great way to practice them!

This product was required for school. Best price I was able to find for this product and arrived same day! It helps prep for exams and the website is easy to use. I am giving 3 stars only because it is so expensive and I only use it to take practice quizzes (other features don't seem to be as helpful for me).

I h hate to give bad review as I love reading but, this story was slow and co n vaulted. I would not recommend it. The lead, Nell, was a weak person who didn't know what to do. I would pass on this story, not worthit.

Mystery,suspense and complicated relationships '

This is the second novel I have read,The first being The House of Closed Doors.Both held my interest until the very end.The author weaves a brilliant tale of post Civil War life on the Midwestern plains through the story of a young woman and a series of events that change the course of her life.I must admit that I did get a bit frustrated with her at times but that made this work and the previous one so interesting.
Looking forward to more of Nell's story and ,despite her quest for independence,I hope that she gets her real "Happy Ending "!

Fascinating, though it ends badly

The first four parts of this book are absolutely fascinating. It's an in depth look at the psychology of shopping and it is exactly what the title promises. Underhill's company gets paid to spy on people in stores and see what they're doing wrong and right. The gems in this book are the anecdotes and the specific revelations about how any obstacle you put in the way of a shopper drops your sales figures. Any way you can make life easier raises your sales. This all seems sort of obvious, but most people running the businesses don't think it through.

One example is the entry zone at the front of the store - you'd think that's a prime location for signage, deals, brochures, etc. But when you're headed through the door into the store you see almost nothing and stop for almost nothing, and then (in America) you tend to drift to the right and then you're 'in' the store. If you put a store directory just inside the door, nobody uses it. Move it back a bit so you can find it once you're into the store and suddenly it's heavily utilized. He has hard observational data for all these, so they're compelling in addition to being fascinating.

And of course all the bad examples are great fun to read (seniors crawling along floors trying to read labels on badly shelved medicine), as are the descriptions of how different groups shop (male vs female, old vs young, parents vs. single, etc.) The whole book is pretty much a commercial for Underhill's company, but it's still informative and fun reading.

Where the book falls down is at the end, where a chapter on the Internet is shoehorned in and a perfunctory shout out to each of Envirosell's worldwide branches is included.

Even though I think he's more right than wrong, the whole Internet chapter comes across as a confused old guy muttering about how he doesn't get that new fangled rock music. He complains about how many review sites there are, for instance, and has no idea how much it can transform the shopping experience (and not just be a poor supplement). Worse, the book's entire premise is mostly about how you need observational data of real customers because they'll always do things you don't expect (can't argue there), but he HAS no data on this topic, so it's just not compelling. I can't help but think the whole chapter is just in there because 'we need something about teh intertubes'.

The 'Come Fly With Me' chapter must be in here because he needs to professionally backscratch all his international partners. It's pretty much useless and turns a mild commercial into an infomercial.

If I sound too negative, please don't take it that way - I'm just trying to tell you why this isn't a five star book. You have 220 pages of 'awesome and can't put it down' book followed by 40 pages of 'what the hell am I doing reading this' slog, then another 30 pages of fairly decent reading. If you don't read those two chapters, it's a five star book!

I don't advise this book! Save your money & keep looking!

I bought this book for my niece who is majoring in Marketing and Communications at Boston College. I decided to read it before I gave it to her. It was such a big disappointment!! I'm so sorry I bought it. To me, it seems like the author used it as a marketing tool to sell his own business services. It is very, very drawn out. He takes several pages to say something that can be said in a sentence or two. He keeps bragging about himself, but most of what he says and does can be done by any logical, analytical, intelligent person. I worked in retailing for 4 years while attending college and already knew most of what he wrote in this book. Again, too many pages, too little taught!! Save your money. There are much better books out there!

CAVEAT EMPTOR

Much of Paco Underhill's language and several of his references were so outdated and even "corny" that I couldn't shake the feeling that I was listening to an assessment of 1966 shopping trends.

Upon closer examination, I see that the book appears to have been published in 2000 while the audio version of the book appears to have been released in 2008. In the much accelerated context of information and technology, practically speaking, any market analysis that's 17 years old IS in fact, ancient history. I wish I could get my money back as this is a perfect case of Caveat Emptor.

It's so hard to say goodbye............

First, I must say that Amazon screwed with me!! I had to wait 7 minutes for the book to download to my kindle! 7 extra minutes that I did not need to be added for me to start this book. Not cool Amazon, not cool.

With that being said, this book was so bittersweet. I, like everyone who is a fan of this series, wanted to read the end, but didn't want to say goodbye. This will be a long review. You've been warned.

**SPOILERS BELOW**

Book 7 literally picks up where book 6 left off and we got the answer (but not really).
Sam's character has grown from when we first was introduced to her at the gas station. She had nothing and was dead inside. As we get to read more about her, we learned that her character was sensitive. Yes she was strong, but she was a broken girl looking for love and acceptance. Of course we know what happened when Mason and Logan entered the pictured. She found love and fought to never let Mason and Logan go. When book 4 came out, I realized that Sam depended too much on Mason and Logan. This was no fault of her own. She never had unconditional love and when she finally found in the Mason and Logan she fought to keep it. I always thought that was Sam's biggest flaw - her dependence on them. Many people throughout the series as mentioned it one way or the other. I always wondered when and if Sam would ever realized that....... and she did in this book. She finally realized that her dependence on Mason and Logan made her forget who she was. With that Sam went to find herself. Sam not knowing who she was was the root of her problem. This made her character at times annoying, but I was so glad that she realized that and started to live for herself too. I loved Logan even more for giving her tough love. I loved Mason even more for realizing he should have pushed her more. Sam in this book kicked butt! Not only with her demons, but with new threats. She stood up for herself and was not the scared girl from book 2. I loved Sam so much in this book and gained so much more respect for her. She was honest with Mason throughout. She had her moments and told Mason straight-up that she had no idea why she is being a certain way. I applaud her for finally being honest, but fighting for her. I must say that I always saw her running as a prelude to the Olympics!!!!

Mason. What can I say about this person who has always been self aware of who he is. From book 1, Mason was a person you can never bend, nor was he someone you could messed with and expect to walk away freely. He was cold, but Sam thawed him. Even towards the end of this book Mason did not realized how much he has changed until Nate told him. (BTW that scene with Nate and him broke my heart). Mason was never one to shed a tear, but in this book we do see that (for good reason) and we do see him mature in his attitude and actions. Lets face it, Mason used his fist too much. His hands were seriously tied in this book. He had to keep a low profile and I think this is what he needed besides the Sam situation towards the end. Mason was a punk teenager (his words not mine) that grew into a man, while still staying true to himself. Mason will forever be my #1 book boyfriend because he always thought with his heart and loved his family fiercely. He also showed that he can be funny and he was. Logan is rubbing off on him. It gave me so happiness that he got to live his dream!!! He worked to hard to let people take that away from him. Man I will miss this dude!

Logan. I am so grateful that he was more active in this book. Logan will forever be the funniest character that I've had the pleasure of reading about. He really was a great brother to Mason and Sam. In this book, we see Logan give tough love for Sam. He really did play a part in helping Sam realize what she was doing to herself. I think what really broke my heart was towards the end. His dedication to Mason and Sam was so evident. He was breaking and you can truly see him trying to fix it. I will love to read a novella about him and where he ended up after law school.

This book was all about finding oneself and loving oneself. This was about growth and making difficult decisions. We see Sam and Mason come to a realization about their relationship. We seem them talk it out and try to do better. We see them break up (they broke up for a few days. I get why, but I did not like it). We see them come together stronger. There is no Sam and Mason without Sam and Mason. My heart broke for them, but I loved them even more. They were high school lovers who had to battle each year. I can see the exhaustion of that taking affect on their relationship, but again, Mason and Sam are it for each other and no one would ever take that way from them.

What I loved the most about this book is the closure of certain relationships. I loved how their parents were there to see the proposal and the wedding. Do I think James, Analise, and Helen would ever be fully there for them? No, but they can have a relationship where nothing is owed and no favors would have to be asked. I loved how Taylor became a great friend to Sam. Their relationship was cute and it was their own. I loved how Nate and Matteo would always be down to help their family in need. The situation with Adam was finally closed. This fool truly is toxic and whatever happens to him and his father is well-deserved.

What I loved the most about this series was the love between a broken girl and 2 brothers who became her protectors. That was always the theme. I will admit that I'm not a crier when it comes to books. The only series where I actually cried was Harry Potter and now I can add this series. I felt like I was saying goodbye to family. The ending with Sam, Mason, and Logan really got to me. I literally started to cry. It started with them 3 and ended with them 3 in an epic hug and Mason and Logan realizing that things will be different from that day forward. I think what really got me, was how they embraced each other and Mason telling Logan how much he loves him. Their brotherly love is just epic on its own. It will forever be Mason and Sam side by side and Logan behind. For some reason that really got me crying. I realized that theses are no longer children, but adults and as I write the sentence I'm tearing up. Ugh ugly cries!!

Epilogue, I am an epilogue girl. This epilogue was perfect that it brought more tears to my eyes. I loved that even though it was short, it was done beautifully. I loved the name of their daughter. I mean how stinking cute was that. I loved that Sam was living her dream. Not going to lie, I still want Mason's POV for the first 2 books and a novella of them. What can I say, I'm greedy like that. I don't want this book to end.

MAJOR NEWS - we finally get to know what Mason said in book 1 when he kissed her forehead in his bedroom. I literally laughed and thought, only Mason.

Tijan, thank you for being you and for writing one of the best series ever. I applaud you for creating characters that would be hard to emulate and bring to life. You created characters that all had flaws, but were so lovable at the same time. You created a love story that puts all other love stories in the crapper. You created a beautiful world that I don't want to leave. You showed growth with these characters. Thank you thank you thank you. I literally can't thank you enough. I don't think I will ever love a series how I love this one. This series will always have a special spot and will be read over a million times. Ugh I don't want to say goodbye

Wow! This was a rollercoaster for me. The end of Mason, Sam, and Logan and I don't want them to be over. Never when I started this series did I think I would fall in love with these characters so much. I couldn't believe the crazy drama that had me addicted and binge reading books 1-5. Now I'm writing this crying because their story is over and it was perfect.

The love between Mason and Sam is something we all want in our lives. Mason was easy to fall in love with. He's tough on the outside, but the way he loves is what sets him apart. The perfect book boyfriend to melt our hearts. Sam was strong and brave. She fought through so much and deserved the amazing family that came to her.

This series is about love, family and loyalty. If you have those 3 things you can get through everything else.

I'm going to miss everyone but I will re-read them over and over again as I do all my favorites. Thank you Tijan for these amazing books and characters. I can't wait to see what you have for us next. ❤

6 FOREVER stars. Top read of 2017.

Oh my gosh. Im not sure what to say. My emotions are high and everywhere, and since chapter 43 tears have been falling down my smiling face. I'm sad, but happy.

Fallen Crest Forever was EPIC. I laughed, I cried, I went OMG, I did it all. I can't believe this is the end. This series is amazing, and this book was even more amazing. Tijan has gone and created one heck of a book, and I have no words to explain how I feel.

Even though this series is over, Sam, Mason, Logan, Taylor, Nate, Heather, all of the characters even down to Becky and Adam will forever be some of my favorites.

I'm crying because the series is over, but also because of the way it ended. Every moment of this book was amazing.

This review can never do this book justice. You will just have to read it yourself.

In one howler, he introduces Theo's teacher: “He always addressed them as ‘men' and for thirteen-year-olds there was no greater compliment.” The moral dilemma Grisham poses is interesting, but when Theo (logically) calls in the adults, it loses tension. I'm an adult and I love this book!

This is a terrific series for middle schoolers or elementary school kids with an advanced reading level. The content is pretty mature. Theodore Boone, the first book, is about a murder trial and the suspect is a slimy man suspected of killing his wife. But no more violent than most other books in this age group. There is lots of great information about how the court system works and just good common sense and moral decision-making. This main character is wonderful. A role model for how kids should behave today. I can't wait to read the rest of the series. They are all on my Amazon wish list.

A PROMISING START!!!

The premise behind this book really is quite clever. Two highly successful lawyers marry, have a child, and surprise, surprise - the offspring decides he wants to be a lawyer when he grows up! A nice, realistic portrayal of life in a legal household. The good thing about young Master Boone is that he is a very likeable character, both within the confines of the story, and beyond. Readers will like him because of his relative modesty, his insecurities, his faults and his talents. His fellow characters (school friends) like him because he is cool as.

His parents, too, are far from perfect, as is the highlight (for me) of the book - Uncle Ike. That dude has SERIOUS ISSUES but we love him just the same.

This book is FUN! Even though it is obviously aimed at the younger (teen?) reader, THEODORE BOON is a great introduction to the legal thriller as well as a way of making enquiring young minds think of life after the school years end. John Grisham's writing style has always been an easy one to pick up; he writes in the common, down to earth way that makes his books a joy to read. This concept is extrapolated for the younger market and it works a treat in this book.

Negatively speaking, I think the plot itself is the weak link in this story. Basing the complete book around a murder trial is normally a safe bet, but this case is a little feeble, and a boring one at that. There are, however, hints of suspense scattered throughout the story whenever Theo comes up against Omar Cheepe and I imagine he will have a role to play as we approach the end of the book.

I give this book three stars, but in actuality (your Honour) it is more like three and a half.

Kid Lawyer? He really IS!

The beginning of a new era! Fine writing, and a totally believable new character, along with his friends. Theo is 13. About that there is no question. But he's not quite what you might expect. You see, his Parents (Marcella and Woods Boone) are lawyers. Both of them. Theo (Theodore) spends a lot of time in the offices of Boone & Boone, and picks up a lot more knowledge than might be expected. And he doesn't forget what he's learned. He picks up new words, and insists upon knowing what they mean. He loves the law, and wants to be a lawyer when he grows up. And he/
's working on it, even NOW!. He helps out his friends... Like the boy whos parents wew about to lose their home. Theo talked with his friend, looked at his computer in a website he's not expected to know about, told him something to do, and a couple of days later learned that they would stay in their home. No violation of law looking at that website, just HE knew about it, and his friend did not.

Jack Duffy seems to have killed his wife, and was on trial for it. But there were no witnesses against him, and he has this attitude in Court. I young friend of Theo's had a Cousin, who had seen Duffy moving about the house where the crime occurred at the time it occurred. But HE was an ILLEGAL, and scared to death! Theo and his parents helped his Aunt get a place to live and to SPONSOR the young man, and he was ready to testify...... Read the book! It's an incredible page turner! Theo is WISE beyond his years, and without being a wise guy. And SMART without the attitude that usually goes with it!
