Review: Published in 2011, Divergent is Veronica Roth's first novel. The first of a series by the same name, Divergent reflects the voracious appetite readers at the time had for post-apocalyptic literature.

The story is entirely from the viewpoint of sixteen year-old Tris who's forced to undertake a social sorting test that separates them into separate and distinct factions—not unlike the houses of Hogwarts—that dictate their members' roles in society. These factions come complete with initiations and manifestos that emphasize their respective ideal virtues. It's discovered during Tris's sorting test that she doesn't fit neatly into any one group. In other word's, she's special.

I'd heard of this book when I came across it on Amazon but I was immediately snared by the potential the world setting offered. An entire society formally divided into factions by their values? I could just imagine the possibilities. Unfortunately, I found that potential to be largely wasted.

I was quickly bothered by the facile nature of the world Veronica had built. Perhaps I've been spoiled by the likes of J.R.R. Tolkien and George R. R. Martin, but I expect my fictional worlds to survive the most cursory of internal logic tests. In this, Divergent fails.

The characters tended to be fairly shallow and predictable in the extreme. Their goals rarely extended further than than the scene that contained them. I found the dialogue to be similarly shallow and unrealistic.

The plot twists were predictable. The writing was often as subtle as a Leslie Nielson movie. Maybe I'm giving the young adult genre too much credit but the characters and plot were about as surprising as a form-fittingly wrapped Christmas present.

I'm genuinely surprised at the praise this book has received. There wasn't anything exemplary about the book except for the setting's concept which turned out to be poorly developed despite its potential. I'm fairly certain that the reason Divergent obtained such an impressive level of success can be narrowed down to its impeccable timing. Publishers and readers alike were hungry for another Katniss Everdeen story. Another story about a young women who had more handsome romantic prospects than she knew what to do with.

Now, don't get me wrong. I try to support new authors. I wish Veronica the best in her writing endeavors. It could very well be that I'm not a fan of the simplistic style she uses, a style exemplified in her website's biography:

"I’m Veronica. I write books for young adults. Specifically, I wrote the books Divergent, Insurgent, Allegiant, and Four: A Divergent Collection.

I like things. Some of those things are (in no particular order): Harry Potter, rain, YA, books, puns, cute animals, tea, sitcoms, grammar, writing, Chicago, Doc Martens, trains, flat stretches of prairie land, cold weather months, and so on. "

It's very possible I'm missing something that her fans are picking up on. After all, her books are adored by millions. They can't all be wrong.

Coming of age adventure whose characters start out as heroes and end as pieces in a larger puzzle.

First off, I have to admit that it is difficult for me to rate this book without rating the series as a whole, so that is what I am going to do. It turns out I cannot review this series without comparing it to Hunger Games.

There is a great deal of similarity between this series and Hunger Games. Teenage coming-of-age adventure story in a post-apocalyptic dystopian society. I could go further into the premise, but it really does not make much sense outside the context of the book.

Again, like Hunger Games, I found the first book gripping and devoured it quickly. The second book did a good job of keeping up that pace.

Then the third book comes up, and, once again like Hunger Games, it takes the "Us vs. Them" story and throws in "oh look, These Guys Too! Bet you didn't see THAT coming!" plot hook, and things go off the rails for me. The first two books seem to be building your hope for the characters and the world they live in and the ability for them to make the world better. Then they expand the world, and the third book goes about crushing your hopes of a happy ending.

While reading the first two books, I was a little bummed that it would be over in three. By the time I was about a quarter through the third book, I was ready for it to be done. I was looking forward to Four during the first two books. After reading the third, I don't have any real interest in reading Four anymore.

The real world does not have happy endings for everyone, but this isn't really about happy endings. It is more about building up these characters to great heights with the implication that they will usher in a new age. Then, it turns out in the end they are a cog in a machine in the end. Important, sure, but used to an end just the same.

I would actually rate the first two books at five stars, but the third book is such a letdown that it brings down the whole series for me, and this book is useless without the other two. If you read Hunger Games and loved it, this scratches the same itch. In the end, I didn't hate it, but it lost a lot of luster quickly in the end.

Nice Dystopian YA Romance

I generally don't like books written in first person...not because I don't like first person, I have just found in my experience that telling a story from entirely one person's point of view is a challenge. And, a lot of authors haven't mastered it...yet. That being said, I really liked this book, rather because of the first person, not in spite of it. The central character, Tris, is multi-layered and quite unpredictable in her reactions to the situations going on around her. She doesn't do what I think she will do. She is intelligent and she approaches the world around her in a unique, intelligent way. She's also a strong female figure which I like. And she holds her own with Four, an Alpha male...with very little softness to him. But its good. Four is a good guy, he just doesn't always come off that way. Still waters run deep though...Underneath the seemingly indifferent straight-laced trainer is a kind intelligent heart. His and Tris' coupling plays out realistically and very sweetly. The Dystopian faction-based society is intriguing...raising alot of questions in my mind. I was thinking about it long after I finished reading the book. Also, a plus, the movie version of the book actually does the book justice (quite shocking these days.) Read the Book. Watch the movie (near perfect casting!)

Steven is an avid drummer, journal writer, and generally a good student. But the pressures of dealing with Jeff's illness stresses his entire family as his school-teacher mom takes a leave to care for him, Dad withdraws, and Steven stops doing homework. Renee Albert is the object of his lust, while Annette, the piano player in jazz band, gradually becomes beautiful in his eyes. Steven's frequent faux pas seem belabored early in the book, but they do eventually work to show him to be an admirable fellow who grows in his ability to deal with others, including Renee and Annette, the school counselor, his parents, and Jeff. The book does not miss a single emotional beat, taking every opportunity to demonstrate that Lurlene McDaniel has no stranglehold on jerking tears as Steven details the progress of leukemia's inexorable attack. If the young characters sometimes speak beyond their years and if Steven's wise-ass voice is initially annoying, it is also fresh, energetic, and consistent, becoming more likable as the novel progresses. A story that could have morphed into melodrama is saved by reality, rawness, and the wit Sonnenblick infuses into Steven's first-person voice. The recriminations, cares, and nightmares that come with a cancer diagnosis are all here, underscored by vomiting, white blood cell counts, and chemotherapy ports. Yet, this is also about regrouping, solidarity, love, and hope. he loved it enough to want me to read it so ...

I read this book based on the recommendation of my youngest son. He is reading this book in his Literacy class in 6th Grade and even half way through, he loved it enough to want me to read it so we could "talk about it." I happen to read faster than my son, especially since he's only reading during class time (this is a group read,) but I enjoyed it as well.

The title does not give any clues as to what the subject matter will be, and I hadn't read any blurbs so I was in for an emotional ride when I got to the heart of the story. Be prepared for some tears and heartache as you read. But, in the same way stories like The Fault in Our Stars or Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, there will be times when you find humor in the telling as well. The blending and merging of these two vastly different emotions is quite often a pleasant experience. I was also very impressed with the writing style and the voice being used to tell the story. I find it so rare in my reading to have a adolescent male point of view. So often, young adult books are told from a female perspective. Without giving spoilers, I have to say that I also like that the story is told from the perspective of a sibling of whom the main part of the story is about. I am definitely impressed that the school my children go to is using this book in their 6th grade classes, and I think it's a good one for young adults to read.

Five stars isn't enough

I'm not normally a big fan of realistic fiction, but I picked this book up after it was recommended to me by some friends. I put it off for about three years before I broke down and bought the book. Thankfully it did not disappoint.
Steven is a normal eighth grade boy. He's in band and has a crush on a girl way out of his league. He lives with his brother (Jeffery) and two parents. His life is fairly stable. One of the biggest problems he has is a brother about eight years younger than him who finds pleasure in making his older brother miserable. When a nose bleed turns bad, he finds himself living in his brothers shadow. He begins to wish that his little brother could be like he was before October, when he had the life changing nose bleed. This book deals with the topic of childhood cancer with a new angle. Trust me when I say that people tend to forget about the brothers and sisters of those diagnosed. They see it all. The book goes at the topic in a way that not many books do. The characters seemed real. Several times I wanted to talk with Steven so badly it hurt.
This book seemed to get a little close to home. I know a girl whose younger brother was diagnosed with cancer when he was three. She was in middle school like Steven and many of the things I saw her go through, Steven went through as well. So many of the small things added up. When Steven called Jeffy buddy boy reminded me of all the times I've called my own brother that. Steven's world is real, and this book crafted it perfectly.

I loved the book. Stories about kids with cancer beak my heart and this one as no exception. But it also had moments of joy and moments of praise for Steven. I would recommend the book to anyone looking for a heart touching story.

#3 Entering into a partnership with an unknown entity

Many grant sponsors expect the projects they fund to be accomplished by collaborative teams. Whether this means bringing multiple disciplines to bear on thorny research questions or bringing the resources of multiple agencies to bear on intractable social problems, current funding trends favor collaborative approaches. To comply with this preference, it can be tempting to create last-minute “mirage” partnerships that look good on paper and at a distance but disappear at close range. The risk here is that your signature on the proposal means that your reputation is on the line with the project. If partners are not intimately involved in planning the project, if you do not have an ongoing relationship, if expectations on both sides are not detailed explicitly, the mirage presented in the proposal is likely to evaporate. When this happens, the responsibility for the proposed work remains and rests with you.

#2 Offering to do the project on the cheap

It is tempting to estimate costs on the low end to give the sponsor a good deal that might convince the sponsor to fund your project. The problem with this is that project costs are likely to be higher than we expect. There are almost always costs we overlook at the planning stage or unexpected turns of events during project implementation that raise costs. A budget that is low from the beginning can set you up to do the project poorly, harming your relationship with the sponsor, your professional reputation, and perhaps other people who are partners or participants in your project.

If the project is funded, you will be obligated to do the work. As my dad would say, “Nuff said.”

With these words of caution in mind, grant seekers must be diligent in choosing the most appropriate funding opportunities and collaborative partners. Grant Writing on the Battle Field

It is a practical but "American Higher Education" centered book. The writers have a large experience in the field, and it shows in the level of detail in the check lists and documentation featured at the end of the book. The book has large margins which allow you to take your own notes. I took abundant notes.
The book serves as a white paper to promote the role of grant writers to assist faculty - so if you want to promote a culture of grants inside your university, this book will give you plenty of ammunition and ideas. The authors try to bring order to address "the messiness around grant funding". They partly succeed in their effort as It is difficult to be generic. The fault is not theirs, but that of the grant bodies and the diverse and complex regulations they impose on universities applying for grants. The book does not take away the learning curve. It makes it less difficult to climb.

Hands down the best grant guide for faculty and university personnel. Best suited for an intermediate or slightly more than beginner level. GSiHE provides really thoughtful and concrete guidance to understand the process and think carefully about the actual writing process. Although its value dissipates in light of trying to address a broad range of grant topics, it still provides pointed information.

Okay, but not great

Schaum's outlines can range from very good, almost replacements for textbooks, to refreshers that you use once you have learned the material and problems repositories for when you are in class. I would put this in the latter category. I used this for my EM and Transmissions Lines classes, and while my teachers basically made up their own homework and exam problems, this came in handy on at least a few different occasions when they had a homework problem that was not like any of the examples in the book. I could usually find one in here to act as a guide to go from.

I would not however say that this is something you could sit down with and teach yourself much of the material from. The explanatory material before the problems are very bare bones. less even than you would get in one of the regular textbooks. It does give you the same basic equations that you get in the books, so you can certainly use it to replace your book once you are done with the class should you ever need a refresher on one of the concepts or to look up an equation.

A GREAT BOOK SHOWING HOW TO DO CALCULATIONS OF ELECTROMAGNETIC PROBLEMS!

This is a great book giving lots of calculator practice in problem solving!

This book presents a summary of the basic ideas of electromagnetics. Its mathematical explanations are very brief, however, giving fundamental equations without a lot of detail. It is not a "stand alone" book but definitely should be treated as a supplementary source used in conjunction with a more traditional textbook.

The big attraction for using this book alongside a traditional textbook is that there are a ton of solved exercises illustrating the concepts at the end of each chapter. These are great to try (without looking at the solutions unless absolutely necessary). Additional supplementary problems are also given and useful to try where the answers are shown but solutions are not shown. I worked thru the first 14 of the book's 17 chapters.

The book's author is an electrical engineer so the book takes an Electrical Engineering slant in places. This distracted me at first since I prefer a "pure physics" approach. For example, alternating current (rather than steady current) is used in the book's initial equations in chapter 1. (After chapter 1 the book switches into steady current for most of the topics). Aspects of Electrical Engineering resurface in chapter 7 again when the author works with AWG numbers, diameters given in "mils", cross-sectional areas in "circular mils", etc... Alternating current ideas (rather than constant current) are injected briefly without warning in chapter 13 when the author begins to deal with Maxwell's Equations.

I found some definitions in this book are slightly different from what you would find in a traditional physics textbook. For example, in this book "H" is defined as the "Magnetic Field Strength" and "B" is defined as the "Magnetic Flux Density" whereas in most traditional physics electrodynamics textbooks "B" is defined as the "Magnetic Field Strength". (See Griffith's amusing comments about these terms and the "absurd" choice of calling "B" the "Magnetic Flux Density" on p271 of his book "Introduction To Electrodynamics" (3rd Ed).

This book also has a large section on magnetic circuits in chapter 12 after introducing inductance. I found this to be something I had not encountered before in any other book. It would have been nice to have had more of Faraday's Law applied to regular electrical current circuits and devices at this point.

Occasional obvious errors were found throughout the book.

I gave the book 4 out of 5 stars. As noted previously, it has a generous supply of solved problems and gives a lot of calculator practice you don't find in a lot of textbooks. In my view this type of practice is so necessary to come to a good understanding of this complex topic.

Through some rather science fictional steps, it turns out, including taking advantage of the latest in biotechnological breakthroughs and not-yet-invented nanotechnology. Is all this longing for immortality driven by an obsession with youth or a fear of death? Readers can judge for themselves, as both Kurzweil and Grossman reveal the personal histories that led them to develop this plan. Fantastic Voyage is written in an easy-to-understand tone, with lots of sidebars giving examples of what the future holds for medicine and health. Whether or not you think that science will find a way to keep our bodies or our disembodied minds alive forever, this book is full of diet and lifestyle tips. Watershed book for radical life extension

A review of Fantastic Voyage appeared in my Oakland (Oakland County, Michigan) Press early in 2005. As a longtime enthusiastic advocate--though not necessarily the most ardent practitioner--of life extension technology, I was ecstatic!

Here was a book about radical life-extension appearing in a ho-hum review geared to (what some say is) the cultural-literary wasteland of Detroit suburbia. The vitalist movement had just achieved a major breakthrough into common humanity... at least the branch of common humanity who reads.

Note: Terminology is still a bit tenuous in this transhumanist era we're coming upon. But a vitalist is sort of a practical immortalist, someone who wants to extend life (with youthfulness and vigor) indefinitely, and generally thinks it can be accomplished in our natural lifetimes.

I'll use the term vitalist to identify the movement Kurzweil, Grossman, and many others are pushing. The significance of their book is enormous: Just as Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw (with Life Extension: A practical, scientific approach (1982)) were to health supplements, Kurzweil and Grossman are to the universal prospect of living well for a long time.

The authors break down our pursuit of effective vigorous immortality into three phases:

* Bridge 1: Ray and Terry's Longevity Program: present-day

nutrition, exercise, and wellness strategies that can get you

to the next bridge.

* Bridge 2: The biotechnology bridge, where we learn how to

turn off the bad genes and turn on the good ones, and

figure out the biochemical clues for keeping body and mind

the best.

* Bridge 3: What they refer to as the nanotechnology-AI

(Artificial Intelligence) revolution, where we can rebuild our

bodies and brains at the molecular level.

The prediction: generally effective Bridge 2 vitalist technologies begin 2010, with the beginnings of Bridge 3 technologies in 2020... with full flowering of those technologies a decade following those inception points.

Kurzweil does it again

Anything written by Ray Kurzweil immediately draws my attention. I think anyone who is familiar with his past work understands that what he writes usually contains a good dose of informed speculation and leaps of faith...but these are based on his (usually informed) views of the near future. I found Bridge One, the first third of the book to be rewarding and informative as it is based on the current state of preventative medicine as the author sees it. This is some highly practical suggestions about ways in which we could hopefully live to a ripe old age. The remaining two Bridges of the book seek to bring us to the point at which science will allow us to live virtually forever. These sections are fun, but so speculative that they are just fun reads based on Ray's views of the future of medicine. Don't expect to gain much more than some interesting advice on preventative steps mone can take to enhance the quality of their later years. For those who are already Kurzweil's fans and understand where he is coming from.

The Bible of Nutrition

This is actually the 2nd copy of this book I've owned. The first left me to live with a friend.

I look at this book as a fantastic time saver. Instead of reading hundreds of scientific reviews to find out the latest scientific information is available in nutrition, I leave that up to Ray, and 99% of the time he's right on the mark.

I'm a bit suspicious about his "healthy alkaline water" thing, as I don't see the scientific research backing him up on this point. I know Tony Robbins is very enthusiastic about that...but Tony's research is suspect too... so I'd leave that to other readers to decide what they think about that.

The rest is brilliant, "must know" knowledge for anyone who wants to live a long life.

People who like this book, will likely also be interested in "NO More Heart Disease: How Nitric Oxide Can Prevent--Even Reverse-- Heart Disease and Stroke" - Louis Ignarro. One warning - if you play with L-Arginine, read the research and don't use it unless you know what you're doing and read enough to know where it can actually help you and where it's being sold as a panacea.

Folks yall know were forevermore braggin about th fine products we get at Amazon. Well, this is no exception let me tell yew!!! We got it six months early for th 18 year old for his first course in draftin. Only they don't call it draftin anymore, it's all on computer and they call it CAD. If ya don't know what that means then yer probably a wanker and don't need ta be readin this review. Close out Amazon right now and go look at some cats on Youtube. If yer still here let me tell yew about this book. We wanted th 18 year old ta get a head start on his draftin course and this book was required. Why ya may ask would they want this book when they got tutorials in AutoCAD, Solidworks and th like. Well, it just so happens that this book has a wealth a practice drafwins in it an ya don't have ta draw them by hand. Ya can use AutoCAD. Not only that but folks come on descriptive geometry is descriptive geometry; ellipses is ellipses and many a th techniques ya use ta draw such by hand can be used in drawing with a computer. Not only that but it give ya all sorts a accepted practices such as line width and th like that th AutoCAD books and such don't go into. They expect ya ta know this. They're just tryin ta teach ya autocad. So all you buddin machinists and engineers and designers out there. Ya not goin ta cheat reality. Ya got ta know it all. Now, how does this book compare with some old classics? Well, I guess th best a th classics is Technical Drawing by Giesecke. Now folks Giesecke is one fine book for learnin technical drawin. We started all th kiddies off on it. We got one a th old copies, sixth edition or somethin', You know, th one with th pictures a dweebs in ties an white shirts doin draftin. Well, as I said all th kiddies started off doin a technical drawin class in homeschool. Some liked it, some didn't. Giesecke has some very simple drawin and they grow in complexity. We took advantage a that and schooled our young'uns in technical drawin up ta their limit and no further. For learnin draftin th old fashioned way, ya can't beat Giesecke! But this book by Goetsch!!! Now that's a whole nuther thing!!! As I said ya got yer basic drawings, how ta draw a circle ellipse etc but then ya got a section on geometric dimensioning and tolerancing that's near worth th price a th book. Now, ya just can't get enough GD&T folks! And then this book relates it directly ta drawin'. Ya got about 30 exercises most a them drawins in this sections that ya have ta apply GD&T principles to. AWESOME!!!! And it's just more up to date than Giesecke. So, if ya just want ta learn ta do technical drawin and ya can find a copy a Giesecke for thirty cents like we did, get and enjoy. I know th kiddies love it. But, if yer serious about draftin or yer class requires it grab yerself a copy of Technical Drawing and Engineering Communication. Ya won't be disappointed!!!! Holy S***!!!
