About the Author
Dr John Wensveen is Head of the Department of Aviation Technology at Purdue University. In addition to his administrative role, Dr Wensveen is an active researcher and expert speaker with a concentration on the airline start-up process and creation of new business models. He is President and CEO of Airline Visions, an industry leading aviation advisory and futurist firm specializing in business, strategy, and marketing plans for new-entrant and established airlines. Prior to the above role, Dr Wensveen was Partner of the Americas and Executive Vice President, Airline Start-ups, at Mango Aviation Partners responsible for overseeing airline start-up and airline restructuring projects from concept through launch of commercial operations. He was also Managing Director of Ventana Aviation Academy, Mango’s subsidiary training company. Dr Wensveen was Global Head of Airline Services at Radixx International, where he was responsible for building and overseeing the advisory services division. Until June 2010, Dr Wensveen was Dean, School of Aviation, at Dowling College where he was Chief Academic and Administrative Officer for the 120-acre Brookhaven Airport campus. Prior to this role, he held an executive position at InterVISTAS-ga2, where he was responsible for developing international partnership agreements for air carriers worldwide. Dr Wensveen was one of the founding team members of Washington-Dulles based MAXjet Airways, the first US air carrier to receive certification since the events of 9/11. Until March 2005, he was Vice President and Senior Director of International Development. While at MAXjet, he led partnership negotiations and set up of the European infrastructure. From 1999 to 2004, Dr Wensveen was employed as Professor of Airline Management with the College of Business at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University where he instructed airline management and operations courses. Interesting concept, but poorly executed

While the book is, in general, quite interesting, it does have two major flaws.

First, it does have the wrong title. It is not about a management perspective of air transportation, at least not in the majority of this book. Rather, it is a history lesson about aviation in the United States - and pretty much nowhere else. As such, it is interesting for readers from the US, but does offer a very limited worldview for everybody else, as the focus of interesting market developments has clearly shifted away from America in recent years. Only within the second half the reader finds what he would expect on the basis of the blurb - but this stuff is covered in other textbooks in a much more agreeable and detailed manner. In turn, as a foreign reader you could care less about the details of the regulatory bodies within the US.

This directly leads to the second, way larger issue with the book: It is poorly updated, incredibly so. Throughout the entire text you will find examples that remind you that this is the 15th edition of the textbook - and large chunks of the manuscript have apparently gone unaltered for years. The text refers to new aircraft types such as the 787 that "will come" into operation in a few years; new technology on the 777 such as foldable wingtips (not for the second generation, but the first!) which have never been ordered, and challenges "to come" with the 21st century. It is fairly obvious that only new material was added where deemed necessary, but in a very peace-meal way. There is hardly a word about the Middle East carriers, for example.

While the text is fairly well written, many chapters provide a lot of information that is not well structured. To get an idea, cross-read the section on American aviation history. While there are dozens of airlines and mergers and new entrants and bankruptcies, this is never presented in a digestable manner, rather as a solid wall of text that is sometimes extremely precise and sometimes quite superficial. This leads to a text that is at times entertaining to read, but I would not want to be in the uncomfortable position of having to write an exam about it.

Bubbles are NORMAL!

That should be the title of this book! The author separates then documents the evolution, development, and finally, expiration of several technology bubbles, starting with the use of steam to power large mills in England in the late 1700s. Next came railroads, then steel, then mass production, and finally integrated circuits. Several subcycles can be identified in EACH major technology cycle--new technology (expensive but not widespread and largely self funded), the finance people see there is money to be made so start investing, they overinvest, a bubble bursts, financial carnage and major shifts in job and consumer markets occur, technology becomes cheaper as it becomes more widespread, finance people start to see successively smaller margins (profits that is) from that technology. A new technology is just starting to be developed, but the finance people don't see it and won't invest. Finally profits from the previous technology are all taken, the finance people wake up and see the potential to make profits from the new technology, the cycle repeats.

I am really enjoying this book. Published in 2002, I wish she would update it for 2016.
But overall it does provide a useful framework for the role of finance in the various bubbles since the 1800s, at least the bubbles that were technology based.

Very accessible to an interested reader. A tad more than a modicum of economics background is all that is needed, but if you have much more, you'll not be bored either, I imagine.

I'm in a startup and as I read thru the various chapters, I am constantly analyzing about how our company and target market fit into this framework.

Good Content & message but a drudgery to read

Good content and message, but a drudgery to read. Carlota has extremely good information in her book, but she is verbose, pedantic and persnickety in her writing. Thus making is very difficult to read and absorb. It could be argued that her book is mostly targeted to the academic community; verbosity being a good and welcome attribute of her writing. I disagree. It is sad to see this great book written in such a way that puts its message out of grasp to larger audiences. Good content, bad communication.

About the Author

WILLIAM A. KAPLIN is professor of law emeritus at The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC, where he also served as special counsel to the Office of General Counsel. He is now senior fellow at the Center for Excellence in Higher Education Law and Policy, Stetson University College of Law.

BARBARA A. LEE is professor of human resource management at Rutgers University’s School of Management and Labor Relations and of counsel to the law firm of Edwards Wildman Palmer. An attorney, she teaches employment law and higher education law.

Together they are the authors of The Law of Higher Education, now in its fifth edition, and A Legal Guide for Student Affairs Professionals.

Great book, good for law novice as well

Prior to reading this book, I had no background in legal studies. So I wasn't very excited about reading this book, because I thought that it would be full of legal terms that it would be impossible for me to understand. However, it wasn't like that. Well, yes, there are lots of legal terms, but the authors did such a great job explaining those terms in a way that it was easy to understand for a law novice like me.

We had to read the whole book for our legal class, I spent hours and hours on this book, and I don't regret it at all. It provides comprehensive understanding of the legal aspects in higher education. It begins with the sources of laws in higher education, then explores all the relationship aspects of higher education institutions, such as the relationship with its students, with the all levels of government, external agencies and organizations, etc. Each chapter provides case studies, backgrounds, and application to today's higher education. It is really a great book and wort every penny.

No matter what it is that you do in colleges and universities, the presence of legal issues are there. So I would recommend this book to law students, students studying higher educations, and everyone who works at a college or university. Everyone can find the aspects that are relevance to their course of studies or work in this book, along with learning more about other aspects that you might not know about. I learned a lot, and I am sure that you will too.

An Excellent Text for The Non-Lawyer

The text renders court briefings, cases, filings, and rulings readable and interesting. The text is well written and pertinent to today's challenges higher education faces regarding torts and all court cases from the institution of higher education up to today's amendments to law. Navigating the United States legal system as it relates to higher educational systems can be daunting, but Kaplin has translated the text material with no loss of original meaning. As an 18 year member of a national organization of constitutional law experts, and a 19 year member of a national organization of public policy experts, this Kaplin version of law particulars that are proprietary to law speaks plainly to me, the reader.

House of the Spirits Deserves Its Fame

The House of the Spirits was a wonderful read. Allende's description of the viewpoint of the old Chilean aristocracy via Estanban Trueba was fascinating and insightful. Her plot line was complex; it didn't necessarily go where I expected, yet it always made sense. Her depiction of the devastating reaction of the aristocrats to the election of her uncle (lightly disguised) was remarkable and terribly sad - their willingness to destroy the economy and let people across the country suffer rather than lose their grip on power. With the election and then the military takeover, history had a tendency to take over from the novel's story line, but her characters stayed believable and followed their paths in the characters she had given them. Allende doesn't necessarily believe in giving everyone a happy ending, but her ending was appropriate and satisfying for me. I enjoyed the story tremendously, and continue to think about it every now and then.

The first of several fine books by this great writer

I think Isabel Allende is one of the greatest writers of the past half century, and this well-known book is an excellent example of that assessment. In a style that draws on the Latin American "magical realism" school, Allende tells the story of the Trueba family as metaphor for the history of Chile through the 20th century, up to the time of the American-backed Pinochet coup against the elected government of Salvador Allende (a cousin of Isabel Allende) in 1973. She creates a family of compelling, sometimes quirky, sometimes tragic figures who each represent a thread of Chilean society as it evolved from a frontier setting into one of the more advanced nations of Latin America. The conflicts among family members mirror those of the different segments of the Chilean population, with the linked themes of development and destruction creating constant tension over a period of 70 years.

Despite what I have written above, this is not some polemic on economics and sociology. It is a beautifully written, well-translated, character-driven novel that will hold your attention right to the end. As with other books by Allende that I have read, she is a master of the sweeping narrative that makes you see the larger picture through the eyes of specific characters. Her ability to describe people and places is unmatched - an enchanting and colorful style without being overwrought.

"The House of the Spirits" was Allende's first major work, but it already showed her ability to spin a yarn that will keep reader engaged right up to the end.

Passions, Politics and Psychic Powers over Three Generations of Chilean Family

Isabel Allende's stunning saga, The House of the Spirits, spans three generations of the Chilean Trueba family ending a few years after the government overthrow led by General Pinochet, the abhorrent right-wing dictator who, with the support of the US gov't, seized the chance opened by fears that the country would be taken over by Marxists.

Ms. Allende', who should soon be Chile's 3d Nobel Laureate in Literature, wrote the novel based loosely on her own family and nation. The novel's fictional characters and events follow closely the lives and times of Chile, Pinochet and Salvadore Allende, her first cousin, once removed, and Chile's socialist president at the time of the coup d'etat. Reports conflict over whether he was assassinated or committed suicide shortly after the coup commenced.

Incidentally, Chile's last Nobel Laureate (1971) was the famous poet Pablo Neruda, who died from poisoning 2 weeks after the coup, as some believe upon Pinochet's orders due to Neruda's support of Marxist politicians. Allende's fictional Neruda counterpart died under suspicious circumstances and his funeral is a significant event in the novel, as civilians on both the left and the right were severely shaken by his death, which foreshadowed several more years of a ruthless, murderous military regime.

Ms. Allende's prose is both graceful and readily comprehensible, as she chronicles a captivating, concinnous tale chiseled in history and filled with passions inflamed by family, politics and power, love and lust, malevolence and mysticism.

Highly recommended.

PS: I've never seen the film starring Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons, but I know it received bad reviews. Little wonder though, this novel is too broad in scope to satisfactorily cover in a 2, 3 or even 4 hour film. I won't be at all surprised if someone like Netflix or AmazonPrime picks up the rights and makes The House of the Spirits into a mini-series like Narco, House of Cards, and The Man in the High Castle. If it doesn't happen, it should. The divergence of South American mysticism, the time (the early 70s), the passion of 2 love affairs and the politics (communists v. a right-wing military takeover/dictatorship) is just too fertile not to captivate an even larger audience in video form.

As a result, the Amish bishop fled into Canada and I was plummeted out into the strange modern world with only a second-grade education and no form of Identification.

I walked through the front door of the tiny police station and went over to a heavy wood counter, where a middle-aged policewoman sat at a computer. She looked up as I stood there, watching her. I saw a surprised look on her face as she stared back at me. I imagined I was very different from the people who normally walked up to her desk.
I was a young Amish woman, just a little over five feet tall, wearing an almost ankle-length, plain, teal-colored dress and apron, followed by knee-length black socks and black shoes. My coat was a homemade denim coat with a high collar and hooks and eyes going down the front. On my head was a stiff white Amish kapp that covered nearly all my reddishbrown hair and was tied in a small bow under my chin. I was shaking as I stood there, looking at the woman. I tried to get up enough courage to say something, I knew I was going to be shunned by the Amish church for what I was doing. I could not speak. The thought of being shunned was terrifying but I did not know what else to do. My whole body was trembling....

She said the author did a very good job with the truth

I questioned a lot of what might go on in an Amish community. Than I shared this book with a friend who used to be Amish. She said the author did a very good job with the truth. I was shocked. It is upsetting to me that parents (mothers, brothers, sisters) can be silenced and that's ok. NO, its not ok and I appreciate Misty Griffin doing something about it.

This was a very compelling story and I now look ...

This was a very compelling story and I now look at the Amish in a completely different way. Some people criticized the way Misty made a few grammatical errors, etc... but I think she did very well considering the lack of education and upbringing she experienced! I can't believe that the Amish get away with this behavior and hope that if there are victims still out there that they expose the people that are abusing them. I'm sure that many people are wondering if Brian and their mother were ever punished for the abuse against Misty, Samantha, their Grandma and Aunt Fanny - and where are they today? Are they still abusing Grandma and Aunt Fanny or has someone put a stop to it and saved them from these monsters?

Captivated

From page one, I could hardly put this book down. The way Misty shared her story was so well done. I hurt for her and her sister so much, while at the same time was so angry at all the adults that did or did not notice anything odd, and did nothing. I cannot for the life of me understand how noone, especially the state, caught these people. I also felt for the sister and grandmother who fell to the abuse of these two people. I am relieved they were not allowed to foster children, and so thankful Misty was taken in by her Aunt and Uncle when she left the Amish. This story also left me with many questions about the Amish Communities. It is sad so many can suffer and it is thought to be ok. Lastly, I was left to wonder if the parents are still living and if so will they ever have to pay for what they did? I am thankful that Misty has carried on with her life and refused to let her childhood hold her back. She is a brave, strong woman and her faith kept her going. Thank you for sharing your story (and your sisters also). I pray you both have happy, content lives from this point on. God bless you both.

We All Need the Wise Woman in Our Lives

My sister-in-law recently told me about George MacDonald, the author of this book--a Scottish author born in the mid 1850's. His writings influenced authors such as C.S. Lewis and Tolkien. I really enjoyed reading many of the works of C.S. Lewis, so upon learning about MacDonald, I was curious but felt maybe his fairy tales wouldn't be to my liking. Nevertheless, I respected my relative's recommendation, bought this title and soon found myself deeply enjoying the stories. It was easy reading and contained wonderful life lessons valuable down through the ages. I think it is suitable for young and old alike. I felt very satisfied when I finished reading it and wondered why hadn't I known about this author before!!

Pathetically sloppy printing job

I do not hate the book itself, but rather the slovenly binding and printing job. It seems the publisher took an old print copy, photocopied it, and slapped it into a magazine-like format. It's pretty ugly and troubled by typos, random hyphens, and other signs of not caring.

Great read, full of fantasy and life lessons

I really enjoyed this book! I read it in about two- three days. It is short but a fantastic allegory that has. I am a Mom of three and think this fable has as many lessons for parents as it does for children. I love the imagery as I could completely play this book as a movie in my mind as I read it. Each scene was set with the perfect amount of detail to create the imagery, without becoming to long winded or boring. It may even be a book I would go back to and read again.

I have never read any of George MacDonald and accidentally stumbled onto this story.

Gerd Gigerenzer is Director of the Center for Adaptive Behavior and Cognition at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin, and was previously a professor of psychology at The University of Chicago and other institutions. His books include the recent Simple Heuristics that Make Us Smart (Oxford, 1999).

Good collection of older essays

Dr Gigerenzer is one of my very favorite people in this field (um, whatever that is). i absolutely adore the book Simple Heuristics That Make Us Smart. That book was a collection of chapters by various authors from his ABC group that put together all the research their group had done into a cohesive whole. This book is a collection of older essays written by Gerd himself, some of them about the same topics covered in Simple Heuristics only in fewer pages and thus in much less detail. Note that all of these essays (i think) have been published before. They're here because you probably don't own all the academic journals these articles came from.
There are other essays too. Several are about how psychologists (not average people) misunderstand statistics, especially probabilities and Bayes. Gerd has always seemed pro-human and here he once again writes about how work by Tversky, Kahneman and others claiming humans are lousy at statistics (and thus decision making) is flawed. In a nutshell, humans are good at making decisions but Tversky and friends (like most psychologists, including me) are poor at designing psychology experiments.
Another article is about a friend and mentor who did good work but didn't get as much respect as he deserved.
So the book is about a lot of things. As before, Gerd is a good writer and can be understood by most people, and he avoids lots of pseudo-math and field-specific jargon, but the book is still fairly dry and isn't super exciting. i don't know if people not in the field would really want to read this. And since this is a collection of unrelated essays, it's probably not a good first introduction to Dr Gigerenzer. But if, like me, you enjoy collecting all of his stuff, this is a good book to have

Excellent and up to date account for cognitive science

In Adaptive Thinking, Gerd Gigerenzer follows up on his earlier book, The Empire of Chance. Part of his new book, Adaptive Thinking, is a continuation of his earlier discussion. Gigerenzer reacts against the dominance of significance testing, and looks closely at how it has shaped psychological theories. In particular, Gigerenzer places the "cognitive illusions" of Tversky, Khanneman, and many other behavioral scientists under very close scrutiny.
Gigerenzer's main thrust is that humans did not evolve in the psychology laboratory, with good command of probability theory to help them work on word problems. Instead, he argues, humans evolved in environments with lots of noise, and had to use regular features of the world to develop simple and effective rules of action. In this, he echoes and extends the work by economist Herbert Simon in the 1950s.
Take one of his examples: You live in Detroit. 1 in 100 new cars of brand X break down. 10 in 100 cars of brand Y break down. Your friend has car X, and it just broke down yesterday. Which should you buy? Well, clearly if you're "rational" you buy brand X. But consider:
You live in a jungle. 1 in 100 children is eaten by a crocodile while swimming in the river. 10 in 100 falls to their death while playing in the tree. Just yesterday, little Bobby was swimming and got eaten by a crocodile. Where should you let your kid play?
According to Tversky, Khanneman, and other modern cognitive scientists, you would be "irrational" to fear the river, since the long term probability of dying there is still only 2 out of 100.
If we evolved in the jungle situation, is it any wonder that most people rely on the advice of their friend in the car situation? Does this make them "irrational?"
Gigerenzer looks at the history of decision research, and offers a concrete and predictive program for the study of human rationality. The book is fairly short, very interesting, and casts serious doubt on many aspects of contemporary cognitive research. I recommend it to anyone with an interest in psychology or decision making, even non professionals.

Insightful research

The approach of Dr. Gerd is very convincing. As an earlier reviewer mentioned, it is "pro-human" and treats people as intelligent decision makers. Gerd clearly shows how Kahneman and Tversky's experiments were flawed. In one interesting chapter, almost all of these experiments were repeated but with appropriate settings. The results were the opposite of those of Kahneman and Tversky: People are smart! I congratulate Dr. Gerd for this achievement, but prefer that he writes a book from the beginning, instead of collecting his earlier papers.
