Okay, but not great

Schaum's outlines can range from very good, almost replacements for textbooks, to refreshers that you use once you have learned the material and problems repositories for when you are in class. I would put this in the latter category. I used this for my EM and Transmissions Lines classes, and while my teachers basically made up their own homework and exam problems, this came in handy on at least a few different occasions when they had a homework problem that was not like any of the examples in the book. I could usually find one in here to act as a guide to go from.

I would not however say that this is something you could sit down with and teach yourself much of the material from. The explanatory material before the problems are very bare bones. less even than you would get in one of the regular textbooks. It does give you the same basic equations that you get in the books, so you can certainly use it to replace your book once you are done with the class should you ever need a refresher on one of the concepts or to look up an equation.

A GREAT BOOK SHOWING HOW TO DO CALCULATIONS OF ELECTROMAGNETIC PROBLEMS!

This is a great book giving lots of calculator practice in problem solving!

This book presents a summary of the basic ideas of electromagnetics. Its mathematical explanations are very brief, however, giving fundamental equations without a lot of detail. It is not a "stand alone" book but definitely should be treated as a supplementary source used in conjunction with a more traditional textbook.

The big attraction for using this book alongside a traditional textbook is that there are a ton of solved exercises illustrating the concepts at the end of each chapter. These are great to try (without looking at the solutions unless absolutely necessary). Additional supplementary problems are also given and useful to try where the answers are shown but solutions are not shown. I worked thru the first 14 of the book's 17 chapters.

The book's author is an electrical engineer so the book takes an Electrical Engineering slant in places. This distracted me at first since I prefer a "pure physics" approach. For example, alternating current (rather than steady current) is used in the book's initial equations in chapter 1. (After chapter 1 the book switches into steady current for most of the topics). Aspects of Electrical Engineering resurface in chapter 7 again when the author works with AWG numbers, diameters given in "mils", cross-sectional areas in "circular mils", etc... Alternating current ideas (rather than constant current) are injected briefly without warning in chapter 13 when the author begins to deal with Maxwell's Equations.

I found some definitions in this book are slightly different from what you would find in a traditional physics textbook. For example, in this book "H" is defined as the "Magnetic Field Strength" and "B" is defined as the "Magnetic Flux Density" whereas in most traditional physics electrodynamics textbooks "B" is defined as the "Magnetic Field Strength". (See Griffith's amusing comments about these terms and the "absurd" choice of calling "B" the "Magnetic Flux Density" on p271 of his book "Introduction To Electrodynamics" (3rd Ed).

This book also has a large section on magnetic circuits in chapter 12 after introducing inductance. I found this to be something I had not encountered before in any other book. It would have been nice to have had more of Faraday's Law applied to regular electrical current circuits and devices at this point.

Occasional obvious errors were found throughout the book.

I gave the book 4 out of 5 stars. As noted previously, it has a generous supply of solved problems and gives a lot of calculator practice you don't find in a lot of textbooks. In my view this type of practice is so necessary to come to a good understanding of this complex topic.

Robert A. Carp is professor of political science at the University of Houston. Is all this longing for immortality driven by an obsession with youth or a fear of death? Readers can judge for themselves, as both Kurzweil and Grossman reveal the personal histories that led them to develop this plan. Fantastic Voyage is written in an easy-to-understand tone, with lots of sidebars giving examples of what the future holds for medicine and health. Whether or not you think that science will find a way to keep our bodies or our disembodied minds alive forever, this book is full of diet and lifestyle tips. For instance, the authors suggest carefully controlling the body's overall pH at an alkaline level, meditating, eating a diet composed mostly of vegetables and protein, and taking loads of supplements (Kurzweil downs about 250 pills each day). Watershed book for radical life extension

A review of Fantastic Voyage appeared in my Oakland (Oakland County, Michigan) Press early in 2005. As a longtime enthusiastic advocate--though not necessarily the most ardent practitioner--of life extension technology, I was ecstatic!

Here was a book about radical life-extension appearing in a ho-hum review geared to (what some say is) the cultural-literary wasteland of Detroit suburbia. The vitalist movement had just achieved a major breakthrough into common humanity... at least the branch of common humanity who reads.

bodies and brains at the molecular level.

The prediction: generally effective Bridge 2 vitalist technologies begin 2010, with the beginnings of Bridge 3 technologies in 2020... with full flowering of those technologies a decade following those inception points.

Kurzweil does it again

Anything written by Ray Kurzweil immediately draws my attention. I think anyone who is familiar with his past work understands that what he writes usually contains a good dose of informed speculation and leaps of faith...but these are based on his (usually informed) views of the near future. I found Bridge One, the first third of the book to be rewarding and informative as it is based on the current state of preventative medicine as the author sees it. This is some highly practical suggestions about ways in which we could hopefully live to a ripe old age. The remaining two Bridges of the book seek to bring us to the point at which science will allow us to live virtually forever. These sections are fun, but so speculative that they are just fun reads based on Ray's views of the future of medicine. Don't expect to gain much more than some interesting advice on preventative steps mone can take to enhance the quality of their later years. For those who are already Kurzweil's fans and understand where he is coming from.

The Bible of Nutrition

This is actually the 2nd copy of this book I've owned. The first left me to live with a friend.

I look at this book as a fantastic time saver. Instead of reading hundreds of scientific reviews to find out the latest scientific information is available in nutrition, I leave that up to Ray, and 99% of the time he's right on the mark.

I'm a bit suspicious about his "healthy alkaline water" thing, as I don't see the scientific research backing him up on this point. I know Tony Robbins is very enthusiastic about that...but Tony's research is suspect too... so I'd leave that to other readers to decide what they think about that.

The rest is brilliant, "must know" knowledge for anyone who wants to live a long life.

People who like this book, will likely also be interested in "NO More Heart Disease: How Nitric Oxide Can Prevent--Even Reverse-- Heart Disease and Stroke" - Louis Ignarro. One warning - if you play with L-Arginine, read the research and don't use it unless you know what you're doing and read enough to know where it can actually help you and where it's being sold as a panacea.

Folks yall know were forevermore braggin about th fine products we get at Amazon. Well, this is no exception let me tell yew!!! We got it six months early for th 18 year old for his first course in draftin. Only they don't call it draftin anymore, it's all on computer and they call it CAD. If ya don't know what that means then yer probably a wanker and don't need ta be readin this review. Close out Amazon right now and go look at some cats on Youtube. If yer still here let me tell yew about this book. We wanted th 18 year old ta get a head start on his draftin course and this book was required. Why ya may ask would they want this book when they got tutorials in AutoCAD, Solidworks and th like. Well, it just so happens that this book has a wealth a practice drafwins in it an ya don't have ta draw them by hand. Ya can use AutoCAD. Not only that but folks come on descriptive geometry is descriptive geometry; ellipses is ellipses and many a th techniques ya use ta draw such by hand can be used in drawing with a computer. Not only that but it give ya all sorts a accepted practices such as line width and th like that th AutoCAD books and such don't go into. They expect ya ta know this. They're just tryin ta teach ya autocad. So all you buddin machinists and engineers and designers out there. Ya not goin ta cheat reality. Ya got ta know it all. Now, how does this book compare with some old classics? Well, I guess th best a th classics is Technical Drawing by Giesecke. Now folks Giesecke is one fine book for learnin technical drawin. We started all th kiddies off on it. We got one a th old copies, sixth edition or somethin', You know, th one with th pictures a dweebs in ties an white shirts doin draftin. Well, as I said all th kiddies started off doin a technical drawin class in homeschool. Some liked it, some didn't. Giesecke has some very simple drawin and they grow in complexity. We took advantage a that and schooled our young'uns in technical drawin up ta their limit and no further. For learnin draftin th old fashioned way, ya can't beat Giesecke! But this book by Goetsch!!! Now that's a whole nuther thing!!! As I said ya got yer basic drawings, how ta draw a circle ellipse etc but then ya got a section on geometric dimensioning and tolerancing that's near worth th price a th book. Now, ya just can't get enough GD&T folks! And then this book relates it directly ta drawin'. Ya got about 30 exercises most a them drawins in this sections that ya have ta apply GD&T principles to. AWESOME!!!! And it's just more up to date than Giesecke. So, if ya just want ta learn ta do technical drawin and ya can find a copy a Giesecke for thirty cents like we did, get and enjoy. I know th kiddies love it. But, if yer serious about draftin or yer class requires it grab yerself a copy of Technical Drawing and Engineering Communication. Ya won't be disappointed!!!! Holy S***!!!

Best Book on Kundalini I've found

I have read several books on kundalini and done a lot of web research (which was mostly horrifying). This is the best book I have found on the subject of kundalini. It is well-organized, easy to understand, and covers situations and topics the other books have completely missed. Most kundalini books leave me feeling alienated and hopeless, and this book has had the opposite effect.

This is the second book that I've read from Tara. Excellent book. It detailed the step-by-step guide to awakening Kundalini. Not only that, the earlier chapters give specific preparation steps that is not to be ignored. As I read thru the book, it seemed like Tara was talking to me; giving me good advice and warning me of the various pitfalls. It is a good book to keep and I'm reading it for the second time, going thru the details that I've highlighted when I read the first time. There were many case studies listed along the way, these are good real life examples of what we should be weary of and what we should be doing it right.
Though I do not have plans to awaken Kundalini, the preparation steps are generic and good to apply for everyone. Definitely a Good Read. :-)

I was very interested to understand more about kandukini energy.
I felt the book lacked any scientific talk, and what turned me off the most was the idea that the author got communication from a divine being.
I felt if these talks were portrayed as self talk wouldve been more acceptable than to put the words under a divine being.

However, the book had its small share of some aha moments.

Mark Dawidziak has been a theater, film and television critic for more than thirty-five years. He has been the TV critic at the Cleveland Plain Dealer since July of 1999. His many books include the horror novel Grave Secrets, The Bedside, Bathtub & Armchair Companion to Dracula, the literary biography Jim Tully: American Writer, Irish Rover, Hollywood Brawler (with Paul J. Bauer) and two acclaimed histories of landmark TV series: The Columbo Phile: A Casebook and The Night Stalker Companion. A member of the editorial board of Rod Serling Books, he penned the foreword to the 2015 reissue of Rod Serling’s first book, Patterns. He has edited three collections of works by Twilight Zone contributor Richard Matheson. His many books on Mark Twain include Mark My Words: Mark Twain On Writing, Horton Foote’s The Shape of the River: The Lost Teleplay About Mark Twain, Mark Twain’s Guide to Diet, Exercise, Beauty, Fashion, Investment, Romance, Health and Happiness, Mark Twain in Ohio, and Mark Twain for Cat Lovers. A recognized Mark Twain scholar, he has been playing the great American writer on stage for more than thirty-five years. Dawidziak and his wife, actress Sara Showman, founded the Largely Literary Theater Company in 2002 to promote literacy, literature, and live theater. Avoid the Pitfalls That Life Throws At Us

Whether or not you remember when The Twilight Zone aired on television in the late 1950s and early 1960s or not everyone, yes everyone, will find a lot to learn in this book on the human mind and its inner-workings that exist in all of us. The many emotions everyone demonstrates throughout life such as greed, envy, love, hate, loneliness, insecurity, serenity, and any others you can think of are all here in this marvelous book and written in a way anyone ought to be able to identify with and see themselves in the episodes that Rod Serling brought to our television screen. Favorite episodes are brought to light once again and prove to be just as poignant now as they were close to sixty years ago in this now Divided States of America.

Author Mark Dawidziak has proven just how gifted Red Serling was in understanding the human mind. Anyone who reads this book will undoubtedly see themselves in it. Do yourself a favor and buy the book. I'm sure you will find it to be beneficial.

It's True, Twilight Zone Taught Me How To Live

When I read a review of Everything I Need to Know I Learned in the Twilight Zone: A Fifth Dimension Guide to Life in the local paper I couldn't believe I had missed this book. Here was a book that spoke to what I had long believed: that Rod Serling had taught me my basic values.

I was seven years old in 1959 when Twilight Zone first aired. It became my 'must see' tv show. Over the years I enjoyed the reruns but it was while my son and I watched hours of marathon reruns that I realized that perhaps more than any book or Sunday school class it was Rod Serling who had instructed me in how to live.

As a kid, I liked the ironic endings, the comeuppances, and just desserts. I thrilled to the eerie and chilled to the scary. The episode that most scared me was The Invaders, told without dialog, about a witchlike old woman whose primitive cabin is invaded by tiny spacemen. They were more frightening because of their diminutive size, for they could creep up unseen. Then came the reveal--the spaceship was from the United States, the menacing spacemen were human and the woman was the alien.

After reading the preview available online I ordered Mark Dawidziak's book and began reading it upon arrival.

Born in a Reform Jewish family in Binghamton, NY, Serling had an ideal childhood but encountered prejudice as he grew up. In 1943 he enlisted and served in the Pacific front as a paratrooper, the roots of his horror of war and hope for humanity. He entered Antioch College, founded by Horace Mann who wrote, "Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity." After graduation, Serling lived in Cincinnati where he wrote for the radio station, then for television. As he matured, his writing incorporated social commentary, convicted it was "the writer's role to menace the public's conscience."

The Twilight Zone stories are teaching parables. As Anne Serling writes in her forward, her father "truly and deeply cared about all of us." If we have ears to hear, Dawidziak shows us, there are fifty lessons to be gleaned from these stories.

Some of my favorite examples from the book, whose lessons need to be heard again, include:

Divided We Fall, highlighting Serling's script The Monsters are Due on Maple Street. It warns us about mob mentality, fear of people who are 'different', and shows how evil arises from suspicion and division. Many chapters end with a guest lesson; for this chapterMarc Scott Zicree writes, "we can live in a universe of love and compassion, or chaos and destruction. The choice is ours, made every day, every moment, by the actions we conscious or unconsciously take...and you can file that under L for Life Lessons."

Share With Others, gleaned from I Shot An Arrow into the Air, written by Serling. A spaceship crashes into a desert, leaving the astronauts with limited supplies. One man decides he will not share, he will survive at any cost. As the last man alive he learns they had landed on Earth, with civilization just over the hill. Adversity brings out the monster and the best of humanity. Dawidziak connects this lesson to the Flint water crisis and the challenge of providing clean water to everyone in need across the world.

Imagine a Better World, arising from Richard Matheson's script A World Of His Own, a comedic story of a man who can manipulate reality through a dictation machine. Dawidziak notes that the power of imagination is basic to the series, and this episode is a nod to storytellers and dreamers who unlock doors to possibilities.

Fill Your Life With Something Other Than Hate is a reoccurring theme in Twilight Zone, including one of my personal favorites, Two, written by Montgomery Pittman. In a post-war, empty world, one lone female and one lone man survive; they are from opposing armies, distrustful and full of hate. The episode is without dialog, for the two do not share a common language. They have a choice: to carry on the war or to assume their common humanity and lay down arms. He also lists Two under Everybody Needs Somebody Sometime.

Payback is a...Or, What Goes Around Comes Around, is another theme shared by many episodes. This was a favorite saying of a neighbor many years ago, meant as consolation while rejected by a petty community. Serling hated fascism; in his script Deaths-head Revisited, a Nazi visiting Dachau enjoys memories of his time there--until he is put on trial by the ghosts of the dead.

Serling ends the show saying, "All the Dachaus must remain standing. The Dachaus, the Belsens, the Buchenwalds, the Auschwitzs, all of them. They must remain standing because they are a monument to a moment in time when some men decided to turn the Earth into a graveyard. Into it they shoveled all of their reason, their logic, their knowledge, but worst of all, their conscience. And the moment we forget this, the moment we cease to be haunted by its remembrance, then we become the gravediggers."

My heart ached reading this, for I fear we are forgetting.

Don't Be A Bully also is a message found in over a half dozen episodes, wish fulfillment stories where bullies get their just desserts. The Guest Lesson is from Scott Skelton who wrote, "As I got older...the series' strong ethical undercurrents surfaced in my consciousness: its indignant stance on social injustice, its rage at the too often petty nature of our species--prejudice, mob rule, the ever-present threat of fascism, the shadow of superstition and ignorance that has, throughout history, halted the progress of our species. From these bite-sized morality plays I drew an unshakable belief in the basic dignity of man--that despite our individual mistakes, our foibles, our follies, and our general bad behavior, we all have a right to respect, to a collective esteem based on the actions and sacrifices of a few of our more noble representatives."

The Civilization That Does Not Value the Printed Word and the Individual is Not Civilized. The Obsolete Man by Serling has a librarian as the hero, a man who clings to his outlawed, obsolete, books, standing up to totalitarian authorities by announcing, "I am nothing more than a reminder to you that you cannot destroy truth by burning pages." Serling's closing narrative states, "Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of man, that state is obsolete."

These don't even include some of my favorite episodes, including Time Enough at Last (Nobody Said Life Was Fair/Be Careful What You Wish For); those with Jack Klugman, including A Passage for Trumpet, the lesson being Follow Your Passion); Kick the Can (You're Only Truly Old When You Decide You're Old); and Nothing in the Dark (Death, Where is Thy Sting). Nothing in the Dark has Robert Redford as a gentle and kind Mr. Death, an image that stuck with me.

I could go on, but instead, I will advise you to just read the book.

Everything I need to know about the Twilight Zone (and plenty I never thought of before!)

Mark Dawidziak has written a unique recollection of the TWILIGHT ZONE episodes with an eye toward what each story actually speaks to us
deep-down. What the series creator Rod Serling gave us was a thinking-man's speculative fiction that challenges the psyche of the viewer~
here EVERYTHING I NEED TO KNOW I LEARNED IN THE TWILIGHT ZONE slaps the varnish upon that classic storytelling for what it truly
tried to "teach" us back in the 1960s (as well as now). Dawidziak writes in an entertaining manner with comic wit as well as real-world
-applicable critiques of Serling's lessons that showed on supper time television over 50 years ago. Every fan of the Twilight Zone needs
to read this one for a special insight into what those episodes entailed, something you may just have missed! AND as a former "Joey Crown" myself, I couldn't agree more with Mark Dawidziak's assessment of those classic tales and the life-improving lessons contained therein.
