Everything You Need to Know About Water and Why It's So Important

Water, as everyone knows, is the basis of life as we know it. We simply cannot survive without it. That makes water a very valuable resource and one that people have argued and fought over for too many years to recall.

In this book, the author takes us on a journey about the history of water, why it is where it is, why cities have sprung up where they have, how water has been turned into a multibillion dollar business and what is happening in the water world currently. It is almost all encompassing on the subject of water and is fascinating in the process.

One of the first points made by the author is that the water we drink today is the same water that has been on the planet for ions. That water was formed during a period in the earth's creation and the amount has not changed since then. As a result, the water we drink today was, at one time, the toilet water of ancient civilizations and was where dinosaurs drank, bathed and went to the bathroom. While this may be a disturbing thought, it has been that way for ions and provides us with a method for reusing today's water to become tomorrow's water.

Along the journey, the author points out that due to climate change, water that was easily obtainable in the past maybe be moving to newer locations. Cities that were thought to have safe supplies are in the process of going dry. Las Vegas, as one example, is reusing and capturing every possible drop of water since the supply at Lake Mead is dwindling by the day. Another example used by the author is the drought that has overtaken the City of Atlanta and how precarious the supply to that city is. He also discusses why this doesn't have to be.

This is only a small part of the discussion of water the author brings to the table. He goes around the world to explore water issues in other countries and why they have occurred and what can be done to fix the problems.

I highly recommend this book to all. As the water we take for granted becomes harder to supply, we will need to develop new strategies for handling water supply to citizens and corporations. This book is the beginning step in a new way to think about

Easy to read

Really see the water around you, where it has been, and where it is going!

We hardly ever think about water -- it's just there. Until it isn't, and then what happens? Author looks at several situations in which water supplies have dwindled and the responses from the public, the politicians, businesses, and other interests. One of my favorite parts of the book discusses how people in rich countries spend huge amounts of money for bottled water that is likely not as pure as their own local tapwater, but you can't beat good marketing! Also, since water can't be created or destroyed and it has been on earth billions of years, every molecule of the purest water you can buy has seen the insides of many a dinosaur before being held up as an icon of purity! I like that the book is different for me, and makes me look at the water everywhere around me in a different way.

A comprehensive study of the international financial system

This book is excellent for challenging undergraduate courses as well as graduate courses in international finance. It has a unique mixture of theory, evidence and institutions. The theory is mainly delivered to you using a few equations and helpful diagrams. The "evidence" part accompanies each theoretical offering and usually takes the form of reporting the structure and results of empirical tests. As far as I know this is the only international finance text that gives so much insight into the econometrics of international finance. It is well known that MacDonald is an international expert in the econometrics of international finance, and the bibliography indicates that he has worked quite a lot with Hallwood investigating various propositions concerning the behaviour of pegged exchange rate regimes. One of the best features of the book is the way that the theory and evidence is used in the discussion of international institutions such as the operation of fixed and floating exchange rates, currency unions and development of the international financial architecture. There is also an extensive discussion of the main features of the history of international monetary systems. Finally the authors have made an effort to bring in some discussion of international finance in east Asia. Probably the book could have benefitted from more discussion of regional issues such as these. Even so there is quite a good theoretical discussion of dollarization in Latin America.

We have tried hard to keep abreast of the literature in all of the main fields of international finance - theory, evidence, institutions and policy. As we believe that scholarship requires the scholar to know the sources of ideas - every idea having its own author(s), we have not spared the student the bother of knowing about the researchers and the generation of ideas in international money and finance. We cover 'recieved wisdom' as well as the important new developments in the field. The latter include such diverse subjects as theoretical innovations in the general equilibrium theory of exchange rate determination, explanations for the relative immobility of long-term capital alongside highly mobile short-term capital, the behavior of exchange rates within target zones, theories of the best course of financial integration of transition economies and developing countries into the circuit of international capital, explanations for why real exchange rates often diverge for long periods from purchasing power parity, how misinformed speculation and speculative bubbles can cause floating exchange rates to be unstable, new successful empirical methods for forecasting exchange rates, and a reassessment of the performance of the gold standard in the 19th century and its role in the Great Depression. This textbook-monograph - written for smart undergraduate and gradute students, is widely used on three continents (the Chinese translation appeared in 1996). And we know that is it used for course work at Ivy League universities in the US, and many universities throughout Europe.

BORIS F.J. COLLARDI is Chief Executive Officer of Julius Baer Group Ltd., the leading pure-play private banking group, based in Switzerland. He oversees all operational issues on both a national and international scale. Before joining Julius Baer in 2006, Collardi spent twelve years with Credit Suisse and contributed significantly to its successful build-up and the expansion of its private banking business in both Europe and Asia. During his years with Credit Suisse, he attained the positions of chief financial officer and head of the corporate centre within CS Private Banking. Very funny!

This book was very funny and my daughter and I loved it. The Spanish is Spaniard dialect (we're in California, so it was a bit different) but we still understood most and enjoyed many laughs.
