Better but Still Irrelevant for Intended Genre

It's tough to be young in the city... the city. But for Carrie Bradshaw there is a pull from New York City calling to her like nothing else ever has. She wants to be a writer and has one chance, a mere two months, to convince everyone she should stay in the city rather than go to Brown in the fall. In Summer and the City: A Carrie Diaries Novel, by Candace Bushnell, we finally get to see how Carrie's first summer in the big city makes her a New Yorker permanently.

Carrie is torn between the other kids in her writing class and the tantalizing life of one Ms. Samantha Jones. The kids in her class are a mix of New York savvy college kids who know their way around the restaurants and clubs and kids from out of town who still can't use the subway, but they are all her age, experiencing the same things she is. Samantha takes Carrie in when her landlady kicks her out and she has no where to go. She also takes Carrie out to her usual haunts, introducing her to New York's most important up and comers. When Carrie returns to her friends from class telling them how she is dating Bernard Singer, the most coveted new playwright on Broadway, and hung out with a bevy of models, fashion designers, writers, and artists, the others are clearly impressed.

But Carrie can't get herself to really write. When she finds out Bernard is recently divorced, she is inspired to write a play about a husband and wife. As she continues working on her play, she comes to some conclusions about herself and the others around her. First, some people just aren't cut out to survive NYC. Also, some people may seem like talented artists when they are really silly fools who are just as miserable as everyone else (just with better tables in restaurants). And finally, Carrie Bradshaw has changed. Everything she does and thinks now is clearly through New York City tinted glasses. When she returns home or a friend comes to visit her, they clearly know she has changed. Now all she has to do is realize it. But will she, before she has to go to Brown? I bet you already know the answer!

This sequel was much better than the first book for me because I got a chance to see Carrie in NYC, but it still wasn't a phenomenal book. it was entertaining and interesting, but only because I loved the show on HBO. I think if I gave these books to a kids who had never seen the show, they might quickly grow bored with the story. But knowing who Samantha and Miranda become made this much more interesting for me. This series might just be a YA series meant for fans and only fans.

There is quite a lot of sex in the story, but none of it is overly graphic or specific. Instead, it is mostly everyone talking about sex and virginity as opposed to Bushnell "showing" it. Still I probably wouldn't give this to a younger high school student, more for the slowness of the story than the sexual content. I am not sure if this is it for the Carrie Diaries, but if there is more, I will most likely read it. I won't drop everything to read it, but I will get to it eventually.

A fitting sequel

I definitely enjoyed this second installment of the Carrie Diaries. The way they brought in Samantha Jones was particularly interesting -- partially in contrast to how she is in the television show Sex and the City, but illustrating why she is how she is in that series. Overall I'd say the book does better with her than the Carrie Diaries tv show did with the character. The book takes a completely different direction. What was very odd about this book was it seemed that Ms. Bushnell was using Mr. Big from Sex and the City in a modified way in the form of one of Carrie's boyfriends in this novel. Just the language he used like "kiddo" kept making me think of Big and not really enjoy or take the character seriously. I thought the Carrie Diaries tv series did a better job of how Carrie got rid of her "v" card, but all together this novel seemed more in the Carrie character's element, mostly given that it is actually set in the City. The cliffhanger at the end was predictable, but welcomed.

Don't compare the show/movies to the books * Possible SPOILERS*

Once again we have everyone's favorite New Yorker...and it's fun learning how she got started and life before "Big". However die hard fans of the series or the movies will need to separate them from the books. The facts change. In the series Carrie says she was a teenager who lost her virginity on a ping pong table in the books she is still a virgin. Also in SATC 2 which just came out last spring (?) it starts by telling how she met each of the girls in order and how she met them...in the book the order of and HOW she meets Miranda and Samantha (to include all of their occupations at that time) are TOTALLY different. Also in the series Carries says she thinks she has issues with men because her father left when she was a kid but in the books she is raised by a loving, single father. I understand that this is a YA series but for those of us that have been with Carrie,Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte from the start it breaks the illusion.
This being said it's an ok read doesn't make you think too much and you get to spend a little more time with Carrie.You just have to let the books stand alone from anything you know from the series and movies.

"Testimony;" A Novel that Feels Real; A Man's Life Upended at Crucial Point; Important Issues Front & Center to Forgotten People

Adult English, including f-words. That doesn’t quite reflect the tenor of the language expressed by the characters in this novel. Without being too political, let me simply say that if you listened to the tapes of Billy Bush and Donald Trump on that bus, and were horrified by the ‘locker room language,’ you would be well-advised to pass on this gripping legal thriller. If it were a film, and I’m betting it will be, it will be rated PG 13 or R, depending on how much of the alluded-to graphic sex and violence that gets in the film.

Mind you, the graphic aspect is less in this book than I expect the film to display, but, Hollywood is Hollywood, after all.

Quick Overview

There is a lot addressed in this fictional tale relating to the atrocities in Bosnia. I was drawn in pretty well by the prologue, but, contrary to one of the reviewers, I found the story almost entrancing. The storyteller’s approach was excellent and, for me, had the authentic feel that permitted me to imagine that such an investigation and its ramifications were based on reality. The ring of truth and the writer’s ability to sprinkle in sufficient factual details made this a terrific, important, novel. Further, it very well portrayed the ramifications that can occur when deeds are performed, or repealed, for the sake of political expediency.

Told mostly in first person POV, this becomes especially engaging and feels as if you're listening to a business acquaintance who has gone through a wrenching ordeal and emerged a changed man.

‘…“The prosecutor and the chief deputy felt no obligation to explain to me,” he said. “But many here would regard declining to investigate as rewarding American intransigence. Also, I’m sure you have noticed where all thirty-six of the defendants this Court has charged happen to reside.”

I had. Every case the Court had brought in its thirteen-year history arose in Africa—Congo, Kenya, the Ivory Coast, Libya as examples. Failing to pursue an investigation that could culminate in charges against white folks risked deepening the outrage about the ICC on the African continent.

“But,” said Olivier, raising a finger, “I have one positive note.” He sat forward, folding his pudgy hands, as if this truth required some formality. “I regard this as the best job I’ve ever had as a lawyer, even better than my years as a crown prosecutor. If I could dislodge Hélène from Montreal, I would stay another decade.”

“And what’s the good part? The mission?”

“Yes, the overall mission is noble. For most of recorded history, the victors in wars have not even pretended to do justice. They simply executed the vanquished. But beyond that, the stakes here are so high that you will never question the value of your labors, as we all often do in private practice. You are responsible for bringing justice to four hundred souls. When you leave, stand in front of the Court and count the pedestrians going by until you reach that number. It will take a while. The importance of what you are doing, and the limited tools to accomplish it, will require extraordinary imagination from you. You will inspire yourself.” He chortled a little at his own description, then slapped the desk.

“But now,” he said, “work begins.” He handed over the two-page order, which the Court had issued last week, requiring Ferko to testify before the Pre-Trial Chamber a couple of days from now.

In the US, a grand jury was supposed to supervise the investigative work of the prosecutor. At the ICC, the judges of the Pre-Trial Chamber played that role. Until the chamber approved, the Office of the Prosecutor—‘the OTP’—could not so much as ask a direct question of a potential witness. Before that, the only information on a case was what third parties, like newspapers or human rights organizations, had gathered.

In the last few weeks, I had read the ICC treaty, all the Court’s rules, and the vast majority of its decisions. One fact stood out now: The Pre-Trial Chamber had never before called for live testimony in passing on an OTP application to investigate.

“True,” Olivier said, “but we’ve all agreed it has some validity. That is why we asked you to rush here…’

Outstanding novel, but more than a simple fiction, this is an important read for anybody interested in domestic or international politics and the law.

She has a psychotherapy practice in San Diego, CA.
Julie S. Kraft, LMFT, is an award-winning author.  She received her master's degree in marriage and family therapy from the University of San Diego's School of Leadership and Education Sciences. Willing to do the work? This book puts the most powerful, effective tools in your grasp.

In the hands of anyone ready to do the work to overcome an addiction, this is a very powerful tool indeed. And I think it also belongs on the shelf - to be used and referenced frequently - of clinicians who work with addicts, teachers of courses on addiction, and the students who are learning to work with the addict population. The authors' integrative, mindfulness-based approach is a winning complement to 12-Step programs or Rational Recovery.
Here are just a few of the virtues of this workbook:
1) It guides the reader, in a very personal and engaging manner, through the process of identifying the emotions, thoughts, and behaviors that underly and perpetuate her addiction, setting her up for success as this work comes together in a grasp of mindfulness. The first four chapters are like having a wise, kind mentor, sponsor, or therapist to guide you through the early stages, when life can be so confusing.
2) It acknowledges head-on that people struggling with addiction have faced, and will continue to need to cope with, loss and the grief that attends it. Part 2, Looking at Your Losses, connects loss with addiction, guiding the reader to identify the cycles and anniversaries that may trigger cravings and lapses.
3) It teaches and empowers through metaphor and mnemonics, ensuring that when the addict is vulnerable and stressed, he'll be able to draw upon the relevant concept or skill with ease. One of my favorites is "Embracing the dog", which refers to those emotions that we'd rather avoid because they're uncomfortable or downright nasty. Here's a sweet metaphor that anyone can relate to, and it sets the reader up for Radical Acceptance.
Speaking of which, Marsha Linehan, founder of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) summarized the approach as "radical acceptance coupled with skillful means". This workbook cultivates the mindset of acceptance and self-efficacy by offering an ample toolkit of coping skills, journaling opportunities, and the kind of "homework" one can actually look forward to.

A must have for those that constantly relapse and don't know why.

For any one that is in Recovery be it AA, NA, CA , etc this is a must have if you have a problem holding together 6 months or a year of sobriety. The root cause of relapsing is what you need to get to and this book is a great way to do it. It is recommended in the book as well as by me to work on this book with a Therapist or higher or with a group. Do not do this alone. This book will bring up emotions and buried memories that you did not even know were there. It is not brain washing but it written so well and in a fashion that you don't even know you got From A to Z until you are there. I am about halfway through and I can tell how it has altered my perception of myself and already has helped me dig up some root causes as to why 10 years into the program the best I was ever able to stay sober was 1 year and 9 days.

Highly effective and helpful

I purchased this workbook after reading the reviews and noticing that there isnt much out on the market addressing mindfulness in addiction. I am a therapist who has worked extensively with substance abuse and believe this workbook is the ideal tool for individual and group sessions. Recently, I've used it within an Eating Disorders framework and have found it just as effective. The exercises and worksheets in this book are high quality and highly relevant. I especially love how the authors interweaved the concept of loss, as it is frequently at the core of a patient's distress. I fully endorse this book and would recommend its use for therapists and individuals alike.

About the Author

Michael Kerrisk has been using and programming UNIX systems for more than 20 years, and has taught many week-long courses on UNIX system programming. Since 2004, he has maintained the man-pages project, which produces the manual pages describing the Linux kernel and glibc programming APIs. He has written or co-written more than 250 of the manual pages and is actively involved in the testing and design review of new Linux kernel-userspace interfaces. Michael lives with his family in Munich, Germany.

A useful book

Technical books are not all useful. Especially today, when in a few clicks tons of forums and articles may answer most questions.

The LPI is remarkably valuable because in 1500 pages it covers most system programming areas (more than 60) in Linux in a logical and evolutionary manner. Explanations are deep and lengthy. The author knows what he talks about, and doesn't take refuge in vagueness (many authors do when a topic is particularly difficult).

The LPI is a useful book to have as a programmer, or anybody interested in [Linux] systems. Searching the book is a first step, the most important, when addressing a topic.

An example of what I like from the book:

in "Threads: further details" the author addresses a particular scenario where a fork() is called within a multithreaded process. He gives warnings and recommendations. Doing a fork() there is the kind of trap many people may fall into, leading to race conditions and other very hard to debug problems that occur randomly.

Modern Masterpiece of Linux Programming

This book claims it is the single most comprehensive book about Linux and is destined to be a classic. After finishing the book I would agree. For 1400 pages the author beautifully explains how Linux kernel programming works. I did not notice a single mistake the entire book and the writing flows elegantly with each sentence conveying valuable information.

The author knows the material so well including the history, and can explain why many design decisions were made. When a function call or a technique is outdated the author explains why it is no longer used, and what the new paradigm is.

I found the sections on IPC (Inter-Process Communication) to be excellent. Every type of IPC is explained with multiple chapters for each in some cases. The trade-offs are examined in depth as to the best communication method.

Certain sections used analogies well. On page 1155 stream sockets are explained and the author explains how this is like a telephone. Each step of setting up a socket is explained from a technical standpoint and how this would be represented as a real life telephone.

The balance between practicality and theory was excellent. A surprising amount of C code is included in the book (Linux is written in C). The coding examples have comments and side notes when needed. This book assumes you know C at least reasonably well.

It is rare to find a book as complete, well written and detailed as this. This is a true modern classic and a masterpiece.

The past two semesters of college I took an operating systems class and a systems programming class. I've learned more about file i/o from the first five chapters of this book than both those classes combine. The book is like the man pages but reads like a novel. Just buy this book!

Another Lucky Peach Magazine Best Read with Your Pants Off

This time LP has come out with a magical holiday issue (holidays, not just Christmas) where they go into depth about the holidays (Mostly Christmas, but not only Christmas) and the food that goes into it. I loved every article in it and devoured this one. I've been buying past issues of LP and trying to get every issue, and so far this one is one of my favorites. The only article I didn't enjoy was the one about the Islamic version of Christmas or Chanukah, and how one person celebrated it in his long lost home town of Tehran, Afghanistan. I didn't like it because it was so depressing and boring, while the rest of the magazine is pretty upbeat and full of interesting stories and information. I do think it is worth noting that Lucky Peach is always printed on great quality paper and the journalism is always accompanied by great photography/artwork and the writers themselves are funny and knowledgeable.

I really like this magazine/book

I really like this magazine/book. The stories are interesting. It's not your typical food magazine it gives the reader much more than recipes , it gives you insight into the whole food experience. Also, I'm a sucker for any Christmas issue of any magazine. I have saved back issues of every Christmas mag I've bought since 1980, maybe longer. This will be a great addition to my collection.

Professor Strang served as SIAM's president from 1999-2000, chaired the U.S. National Committee on Mathematics from 2003 2004, and won the Neumann Medal of the U.S. Association of Computational Mechanics in 2005. Computational science goes mainstream.

How does one write a review on a computational science book, an academic area that to many is obtuse? Well, first, as a non-engineer or computational scientist, that I even understood enough to write a review speaks volumes to the clarity of this text. It does require a fundamental understanding of linear algebra and calculus. However, even in that regard, I imagine one could easily review the fundamentals either through Prof Strang's recent text (Differential Equations and Linear Algebra) or elsewhere. This book is a useful, actually essential, companion to his online OCW 18.085 course. It presents the facts around how continuous equations of calculus are discretised with linear algebra. It highlights how linear algebra, due to the fact of linearity, allows many non-linear and real world problems to be described and approximate solutions derived. However, the major element that makes this text different is the approach Prof. Strang adopts in his linking of linear algebra to the real problems he examines. It is a combination of passion for the subject area, an engaging and prosaic style of writing, and an approach at the frontier of teaching what in the past have been disparate and (in my experience) rather dull subject areas. This book perfectly illustrates the reality that linear algebra and the techniques it offers science is on the frontier of computation and real world analysis. This reality opens a vacuum for what is both a grounding and springboard text. However, the text also clearly takes the concepts raised to a depth mathematically that would satisfy all but the most trenchant purist. The problem sets are useful in developing concepts and are more than the often-found trickiness in other texts. They are accompanied by guiding comments, in places and solutions are available online, to allow more depth. I also note that the text represents many years experience of teaching and reflective analysis. One cannot conclude a review without also noting the quality of Prof Strang's academic credentials. Even a casual look at his CV illustrates that he is a luminary in that field. I also note that his 'academic ancestry' (doctoral supervisors) include mathematicians like Gauss, Hilbert and others around 8 steps back. This book has made me want to pursue the area further and, I hope, that alone would help people contemplate this as a course text or a highly useful addition to the serious student of applied mathematics library.

Good text for MATLAB based computional techniques

While I've only used this text for a couple of weeks, I find that it supports the MIT 18.085 video lectures nicely (which is it's purpose). It has been over 30 years since I had calculus and linear algebra, so this text makes for a good review and then some. The exercises with MATLAB (Octave in my case) is giving me great exposure to computational methods used by universities today. (I had previously been a Mathcad and C# user). The topics do move rapidly.

Recommend for use with MIT 18-085 lecture series

Purchased book to help me follow the online MIT 18-085 lecture series by Strang. Am only five lectures into the series and have found the book to be helpful. Would like to locate a solutions manual for the problems so I can check my work. Purchased book "used" from HPB-Dallas for $54. The book I received was new unused!
